Chapter Five
"Sometimes, things are simply out of your control. You can't change them. You can't bend them to your will. It doesn't matter if you're already forty-five minutes late, if your hair isn't brushed, you haven't fixed breakfast and you're haemorrhaging brain cells by the second while you sit here. Dying, dying inside"
"time catches all of us"
Lucy was holding a crying Mia and rocking her back and forth. "Please stop crying, baby", she said gently. "Please go back to sleep for Mommy. Please, sweetheart". She sighed. "You hate me, don't you?" she questioned the baby. Mia responded by crying louder than she already was and Lucy nodded in defeat.
Lucy was in the kitchen, making a bottle for Mia while balancing her phone between her ear and her shoulder. "Okay, please tell me you're as miserable as I am?" Lucy said. "She cried for an hour and a half this morning". "Her new personal best", Cristina replied.
"Hilarious. But seriously, please tell me you're miserable"
"No, I'm happy as can be. My coat doubles as a sleeping bag"
Lucy finished making the bottle. "Hold on". She put the phone on speaker and picked up Mia and started feeding her. "Here you go, baby"
"Hi, Mia"
"Now that Mommy has fed you, there will be no more crying this morning, right? Cristina, I think she hates me"
"She does not hate you"
"She never cries this much when Alex is around. This morning, she was fine until he got out of bed and went to take a shower. Next thing I know, she's sobbing uncontrollably like he just went off to war"
"She'll get over it. She's a baby. She can barely tell the two of you apart"
"I hate you"
"Yeah, well"
"Good morning. How are you?" a voice in the distance said.
"Morning"
"We sure got a nice fresh snowfall last night"
"Sure did!"
"Have a good one"
"You too!"
"Who's that?" Lucy asked.
"Just me being neighbourly. I'm neighbourly now"
"Oh, no. I think she just pooped. Did you just poop, honey?" She sniffed her diaper and retracted immediately. "Yup"
"See, you have a fake voice, too"
"Well, I'm using it on a child. You're supposed to"
"You know what? Tell her she's got to get her act together or she'll never be on the Supreme Court. She's gotta buck up"
"Excuse me?"
"Buck up. Alright. It's a Minnesota thing. We don't wallow in our self-pity. We're... We're tough. We're friendly. We're... My car is buried under a mountain of snow"
Lucy laughed. "Buck up"
"I hate you"
Lucy hung up the phone and placed Mia on the changing table. Alex entered the kitchen. "Hey, what happened here?" he asked, squeezing Mia's hand.
"What does it look like? She hates me"
"Will you stop with that? She does not hate you"
"She doesn't appreciate me. She lived inside of me for nine months and she hates me"
"Stop, okay? Stop. She loves you. Move. I'll do it. Sit down and eat something"
"Alex..."
"Sit"
She checked her watch. "I can't. I'll grab something at the hospital. I'm late. Are you okay with her?"
"Yeah, we're all good"
"Okay. God, I stink and now I don't have time to shower. And I look like crap"
"You don't stink and you look beautiful"
"You're just saying that"
"You're right but you can shower at the hospital"
"I thought I was gonna be one of those hot moms who always looked really put together"
"You are a hot mom"
"If you insist, I won't argue with you. Okay, I'm going now. I love you"
"I love you, too"
"Bye"
She pecked his lips and quickly grabbed her jacket. As she was leaving, Mia started crying. "See? She doesn't hate you", Alex said, holding her up.
"Seriously?"
"I'm kidding. Will you just go? She's fine"
"Maybe I should just stay home with her"
"No, Lucy, come on. We do this every morning"
"What if she needs me?"
"She'll be okay. Say goodbye to Mommy. Say goodbye"
"Okay, bye. Bye. Mommy loves you. Bye"
Meredith, Shane, Heather and Jo were operating on Meredith's patient Melissa. Lucy entered the OR. "Hey, I left Mia at home with Alex", she greeted. "She hates me". "We've been over this. No, she doesn't", Meredith argued.
"Alex is just better at this than I am"
"I thought the same thing about Derek. It takes practice. You're not gonna be perfect right away"
"I guess so. Okay, the break is near the femoral artery. Ooh, she's losing a lot of blood?"
"Um, yeah", Heather said. "Suction", Meredith said. "I'm trying", Jo replied.
"Okay, Wilson, just get in there and scoop it out with your hands. Just scoop it out. Just get right in there"
Richard came into the OR. "Okay. The liver's exsanguinating", Meredith said. "Ross, suction. Wilson, get a clamp for this". "Right away", Jo replied, before whispering to Lucy. "Which one should I ask for?"
"Debakey"
"Good news. We tracked down the young woman's parents in Toronto", Richard informed them. "They're getting the first flight".
"Suction, and let's hang more blood"
"That one makes 57", Heather stated. "Mer, we've replaced her entire volume of blood four times", Lucy added. "I got this. More laps", Meredith said. "It might be time to pack her and let her rest", Richard suggested. "Looks like you're at a point of diminishing returns, Grey. There's a limit to how much this patient can take. She was crushed by two tons of twisted metal. That's a lot of trauma for the body".
"I know. I know exactly how much trauma that is for a body. I'm not doing damage control here. I'm not gonna pack her up and hope for the best"
"I need you to stop"
"She needs an intact liver"
"Mer, just take a second", Lucy said.
"I am trying to save her life"
"Hands off the patient. Now", Richard ordered. Everybody except Meredith raised their hands.
"Grey"
"Let's pack her up", Meredith said. Richard left the OR.
Meredith and Lucy were leaving the hospital, on the phone to Cristina. "It's going to be fine", Lucy reassured Cristina. "Thomas made me leave my patient", Cristina replied. "Now she's gonna die, and he'll be fired". "Well, I'm leaving my patient, too", Meredith pointed out. "I have to pick Zola up from daycare, and Derek's out of town so it has to be fine".
"It's not gonna be fine"
"She's surrounded by interns"
"That's one of the signs, Meredith, like locusts or the four horsemen of the apocalypse"
"Well, except there's only three of them and it's one night", Lucy said.
"You need a bug-out bag"
"What's that?"
"Like a diaper bag for adults. I'm making mine right now"
"Well, what do you have so far?"
"Tequila"
"Well, that's a good start"
"What else?"
"Well, the sign of a well-packed diaper bag is backups in case you run out", Meredith said.
"So more tequila?"
"I am out trying to have one night, and my intern decides to close my patient's wound, an infected wound, which I left open to heal", Jackson ranted as he walked past them. "Dumbass, over-eager, barely-out-of-med-school child!" "I'm staying", Meredith stated. "I'm going back", Cristina said. "I'm going home", Lucy added. Meredith hung up the phone and looked at Lucy with a pleading look.
"Mer, please, no. I already have a screaming baby at home that hates me. I don't need your baby staying over and hating me, too"
"Please, Lucy. I'll really owe one. Please"
"Hey, cutie pie", Lucy said as Meredith handed Zola to her. "There's extra clothes in the bag", Meredith said, handing her a bag. She stood in front of them, looking hesitant. "Hey", Lucy said. "No, no, no. No. No, don't do that to yourself. I do it every morning. It's not fun. It's good for her to see you work. It is good for her to see you achieve. Yes. That's how she'll become CEO one day. Yeah? 'Cause Mommy works. That's good".
"Okay. I owe you one. Seriously"
"My first surgery's at 10. I'll just drop her off at daycare when I get there"
"Okay. Bye"
Meredith was talking to her interns in Melissa's room when she was distracted by Lucy waving at her with Zola in her arms. She rushed over to them. "I am so sorry. I'm so sorry", Lucy said. "I have surgery in ten minutes. I tried leaving her in daycare, but she's running a little fever. I'm sure it's no big deal but they won't take her if she hasn't been fever-free for 24 hours. Did I mention I have surgery?"
"In ten minutes"
"I'm sorry"
Lucy ran off.
Meredith was explaining to her interns what they were going to do in surgery when she bumped into Beck. "Wait. It's 4:30", Meredith said. "I thought you were with Zola". "No, yeah, 4 to 5, that's Dr Jacobs' shift", Shane agreed. "Yeah, that was before my surgery went long", Beck explained. "Beck, who has my daughter?" Meredith asked her.
"4:30... Jackson, I think"
"Beck"
"When I realised my surgery was going long, I sent an intern to make sure that Alex could take her for longer, but he couldn't push his surgery again, so he left her with Ted, so I was just about to go relieve him right now. Unless Jackson got there first. His shift was after mine so..."
"Who's Ted?"
"Nurse Ted from the ER. And I can tell by the look on your face that you don't know who Ted is. Don't worry about it. I'm going there right now. Zola will be fine. Okay?"
"Ross, follow her. Do not leave her side until my daughter is physically in her arms"
"On it", Ross said, running after her.
Meredith ran down the hallway looking for Zola and found Aurora, carrying her. "There she is. There's your Mama", Aurora said. "Kepner had to scrub in on a colectomy so I took her, right?" "Hi", Meredith smiled. "You look like you're feeling much better".
"Well, we read Goodnight Moon a couple times, didn't we? And then you tried to show me how to play patty-cake, right? And it turns out, Auntie Aurora is pretty terrible at that. Oh, and her fever broke a couple hours ago. 99.2 last time I checked"
Just as Meredith reached over to take Zola, Jo appeared. "Dr Grey! Dr Grey!" she called. "Is she crashing?" Meredith asked her.
"Melissa's asking for you"
Meredith turned to Aurora.
"Go, go. I don't need to be anywhere", Aurora said.
"Okay. Bye, Zozo"
"Say bye. Say bye"
Meredith ran off.
"Hey, you. What are we gonna do now? We're gonna do high fives. Patty-cake. Yeah?"
She spun her around.
Meredith came out of Zola's room after putting her down for the night and sat next to Lucy on the couch. "Okay, what are we watching?" Lucy asked her. The doorbell rang. Meredith sighed and got up to answer it. She opened the door, revealing Cristina. After noticing who it was, Lucy quickly got up and joined them at the door. The three of them hugged. "I downed the tequila bottle from my diaper bag", Cristina said. "I can barely... I don't even know what my name is". They laughed. "Lexie's dead", Meredith stated. "Yeah", Cristina said, hugging them again. "Everyone's dead".
