Chapter Eleven

"The big day is here. The day you're gonna hear the news, the test result. Is the biopsy malignant or benign? Am I gonna live or die? You just want to know, even if the news is scary, because then you can move on. Whatever that means. They say ignorance is bliss because once you know about the tumour or the prognosis, you can't go back. Will you be strong or will you fall apart? It's hard to predict, so don't worry about it. Enjoy the time you have before the news comes. Yep, ignorance is bliss"

"for we are all that is left"

Owen entered the kitchen where Beck was eating cereal. "Hey", he greeted awkwardly.

"Hey"

"I'm just gonna make some coffee"

"Cool, you do that"

"Okay"

"Okay"

He entered Aurora's bedroom with two cups of coffee. "What did she say?" she asked him as he sat next to her.

"Nothing"

"Nothing?"

"She still hates me"

"She doesn't hate you"

"You don't have to lie. I can take it"

"Okay, she hates you"

"Yeah, that's what I thought"

"Are you kidding me?!" Lucy exclaimed, looking for a glass in the kitchen. Alex stood a few feet away, eating cereal out of the box.

"We have no glasses?! We can't exactly drink out of Mia's bottles"

"Why not?"

"Alex, I swear to God"

"What? I'm kidding"

"Alex, this place is a mess. We have no glasses, we don't have a couch, I have a blinding headache because I didn't get any sleep last night. I am begging you to fix this or I will kill you with my bare hands"

"Look, if you're thirsty, you can just stick your head under the faucet"

"Okay. I'm gonna go to the hospital where there's food and paper cups, before I break something"

Alex, Lucy and Cristina were in the lounge. "So, I heard you two fighting over glasses and couches this morning", Cristina stated. "We weren't fighting", Alex replied. "Yes, we were", Lucy argued. "Listen, once Alex decides to buy glasses and a couch, I will stop screaming at him at 8 o'clock in the morning and you can get your beauty sleep. Sound good?" "Amazing", Cristina said flatly. "Dr Webber rejected my mother's cookies", Jackson said, entering the lounge and putting the tin of cookies on the table. "That sounds dirty", Alex commented.

"She's worried about him. She wants me to assess his mood. She thinks he's depressed"

"Well, his wife died a month ago. Isn't he supposed to be depressed?" Lucy pointed out.

"Of course, but, like, normal depressed or too depressed?"

"I mean, he's fine. He's back at work", Cristina said.

"Nah, but he's not operating"

"Maybe you should hold him", Alex suggested.

"And I'm done. Enjoy the cookies"

"Thanks", Lucy said.

Derek met Callie and Lucy in a conference room, where they were putting a ping-pong net onto the table. "Hey", Lucy greeted him. "Hey", he replied. "So I think our big mistake last time was, we tried to get you back too fast", Callie said. "So this time, baby steps".

"Torres..."

"Who's the patient?"

"I'm the patient"

"That's right. Now... This is the same muscle movement you use with the Leksell Rongeur"

"Basically, the same motion as hitting a ping-pong ball", Lucy explained. "So that is what you're gonna do today". "For how long?" he asked.

"How long did your last meningioma removal take?"

"It was eight hours, I think"

"Well..."

"We're gonna play ping-pong for eight hours?"

"Oh, not us. We've got patients and surgeries"

"Well, then who?"

"Morning. We back on the saddle?" Shane said, peering in from the doorway.

Cristina and Lucy were walking around with the box of cookies. They stopped at the desk where Meredith, Beck and Aurora were. "Hey. Where'd you get the cookies?" Meredith asked. "Webber didn't want the pity cookies from his girlfriend about his dead wife", Cristina replied. "He's not operating, so Jackson's "mommy" was worried", Lucy explained.

"Whatever. These cookies are awesome"

"What about Jackson?" Beck questioned.

"Are you still pining over Jackson?"

"I'm not pining. I don't pine. Why? Is he seeing someone?"

"Beck, Beck...", Lucy said. "Jackson is like a cookie. People want to lose weight, they don't eat the cookie. But then they get so hung up on not having the cookie that their whole life is about the cookie".

"My whole life is not about the cookie"

She reached over and took a cookie out of Cristina's hand. "What about you?" Beck said to Aurora. "Is your whole life about the cookie?" "What do you mean?" Aurora questioned.

"You and Owen, are you guys a thing again or..."

"I don't know. All I know is, he's not my husband anymore"

"Yet you're still screwing him"

"It's weird, I'm aware. Will you be nice to him, though?"

"I'm nice"

"Beck..."

"I'm as nice as I can be to the man who broke your heart and stomped on it"

"Please"

"I'll be nicer"

"Thank you"

Lucy looked at Meredith. "Is there something you wanna tell us?" she said. "No. Nothing I can think of", Meredith said.

"Okay, if you're sure"

"I am"

"Good"

"Great"

Meredith, Beck, Cristina and Aurora's phones started buzzing.

Shane and Derek were playing ping-pong, while Derek's phone kept on ringing. Aurora came in. "Hey, Derek. Answer your phone", she said. "We're in the middle of a game", he replied.

"Well, you know what? Not anymore. The lawyer called, and they need us at the courthouse. Now"

At the courthouse, Callie, dressed in scrubs, was running down the hallway. She entered the courtroom, where the trial had just ended. "Did I miss it?" she asked. "Damn it. I'm sorry. I got out of the OR as fast as I could, but I didn't think it was gonna happen today. Oh, God. Was it bad?" Aurora shook her head.

"It wasn't?"

"We won", Arizona answered. "He said the airline company had a history of mechanical problems with the plane", Derek explained. "It was in public record, and the hospital should've known". "He found the hospital negligent", Meredith added. "So we won", Callie said, smiling. "When's he gonna tell us about the award? I mean... I hate to be all about the money...". "He already did", Beck interjected. "He's giving us $15 million".

"Woah"

"Each"

"So what happens now, the hospital hands us a check for $15 million?" Meredith asked Jeanette. "Well, their insurance company does, and it'll probably take some time to get through all the bureaucratic rigmarole, but, yeah", Jeanette replied. "Pending appeal, the insurance company will issue each of you a big check". "In the meantime, I have a ping-pong ball to hit", Derek said. "Yeah, I gotta get back, too. I have James Leggett's surgery", Arizona added.

"How is James?"

"Well, that's right. You and Mark did his original cranial expansion"

"Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Why is everyone rushing off?" Callie questioned. "This is a momentous event. Shouldn't we do something, like celebrate or... Okay, maybe "celebrate's" too strong a word. Dinner. We should have a dinner. Come on. We've been sitting in rooms with each other for months talking about this, and we just won. What's wrong with sitting in one more room with food in front of us?"

Cristina, Derek, Beck, Meredith, Lucy and Alex were standing in the elevator. "We could buy a house", Meredith suggested. "We already have a house", Derek pointed out. "You could buy another house", Beck stated. "We could buy five houses with yards as big as football fields", Cristina said.

"We could buy the team to play on the football field"

"Who would play against them?"

"Well, we'd buy another team", Derek said. "Obviously", Beck said. "I just wanted a house", Meredith said. "Mo' money, mo' problems", Cristina commented. "I should've been on that damn plane", Alex said, before leaving the elevator. "Alex!" Lucy called after him. "Sorry".

Meredith, Lucy, Derek and Cristina arrived at the nurses station in the main hall. "I'm just not ready for Callie's dinner tonight", Meredith stated. "It's too weird". "I know", Cristina agreed. "How long do you think till these parasites are hitting us up for a lung?" "Dr Grey", Heather said, rushing over to Meredith with a chart. "That was fast", Derek commented.

"Glad you're back. I have a patient. She's a 19-year-old college kid, nauseated with a distended stomach. And she says there's no way that she's pregnant"

"Everybody always says that, and then they always end up pregnant", Meredith pointed out.

"Okay, but if the pregnancy test is negative?"

"Okay, I will come with you. But I am not taking point, you are"

They walked off. "Yeah, you know, that really is a problem, people claiming not to be pregnant when they really are", Lucy said. "You know?" Derek said.

"Of course we know"

"Her boobs got huge about two weeks ago, and she's eating everything in sight", Cristina said. "Plus, I heard Brooks tell her about an ultrasound", Lucy added. "It was easy to put two and two together". "But she didn't tell you?" Derek questioned.

"No, but... She knows we know"

"So you know she knows that you know?"

"She'll tell us when she's ready to be happy about it. Congratulations"

Aurora and Owen were sitting on a bed in the on-call room, kissing. He pulled away and held her face in his hands. "What?" she asked.

"I'm relieved. I heard about the judgement"

"Yeah? It hasn't really sunk in yet. Hey, will you come with me to this thing tonight?"

"Depends. What's the thing?"

"Oh, it's dumb. Callie wants to have a survivors dinner. It sounds morbid to me, actually. But if you come, it could be fun. I mean, we could just get really drunk"

"That's... I... Shepherd doesn't want me there"

"Why?"

"He blames me. And I get it. I'm the bad guy. And I don't know if I want to be forgiven"

"Don't play martyr"

"I'm not. I'm... This is... I am partially responsible. So if Shepherd doesn't want me around..."

"Okay, you know what I think? I think Derek Shepherd..."

He interrupted her with a kiss, placing his hand on her cheek. "Let's just leave the case and the crash in the past outside and just be here right now. Just you and me"

"Okay. So now what? Now... You take your shirt off"

"Okay. You can take off your pants"

Lucy and Alex were watching the ping-pong tournament. "Look, I'm sorry I keep yelling at you", Lucy said. "I just want us to have our shit together so our daughter doesn't have to grow up, watching TV on the floor".

"I'll get to it, alright?"

"But will you, though? 'Cause you've been saying you'll get to it for like a week now. I think you're just waiting for me to break down and then I'll end up doing the whole thing"

"Come on"

"Aha! You didn't deny it!"

"Yes! You got it, Shepherd. That intern is choking"

"You want to make this interesting? I bet that Shane wins this whole thing. If I lose, I'll buy the couch. If you lose, you buy it. Deal?"

"Deal"

"Hey. Who's... Who's winning?" Callie asked.

"He's got Shane on the ropes"

"Please. Derek's meat. Watch Shane's dead ball", Lucy said. "That's our wrist in there", Callie pointed out. "Lucy, it's not too late to back down", Alex said. "I'm a gentleman. I'll let you walk away. I might even buy a chair". "Nope, winner takes all", Lucy replied. "Loser has to furnish the whole house and buy dishware".

"Prepare to be out of a lot of money"

Aurora walked into the conference room. "My turn", she stated, taking the paddle off of Shane. "You need to forgive Owen". "For what?" Derek asked.

"You're holding a grudge"

"You make it sound like he stole my lunch from the refrigerator"

"Derek, we won. We get to move on. And we have to let Owen do the same"

"He put us on that plane"

"You know what? You were chief once. You make a bunch of decisions based on what you know at the time. Forgive him"

"It's not that easy"

"I know. Trust me. Forgive him anyway"

A crowd had gathered to watch Shane and Derek play ping-pong. Alex walked over. "You got here just in time to lose", Lucy commented. "Final point, advantage Ross". "Shepherd's got this", he replied.

"Whoo, Shane!"

"Come on, Shepherd! You got it!"

After a heated round, Shane scored past Shepherd. Lucy cheered loudly, jumping up and down. "Yes! Oh, yeah", she exclaimed, doing a victory dance. "Oh, yeah. It feels so good". "I got to go to the store", Alex grumbled.

Jackson walked over to Beck who was filling out charts. "Hey", he greeted softly.

"Hi"

"I am kind of sleeping with Stephanie. I was hoping that you wouldn't have to find out about it at all. But of course, it's probably gonna get out. So I just wanted to make sure that you don't have to hear about it from anyone else"

"Okay"

"Okay?"

"I miss you. I just... I feel like we were friends or something, and now everything is just so..."

"So we can still be friends"

"No, we can't. Do you wanna know what I'm thinking about right now? Kissing you. Standing here looking at you, and all I wanna do is kiss you. So, no, I... I'm... I'm not ready to be your friend yet"

"You sure?"

"Yes. Yes, I'm sure. Thank you for telling me"

"Okay"

The group were at the restaurant. "How's everyone's dinner?" Callie asked. "Good", Aurora replied. "Good", Derek added. "Good", Meredith said. "It's good", Arizona said. "It's fine", Beck said. "How'd the surgery with James go?" Derek said to Arizona. "Jackson didn't listen", Arizona said. "He went ahead with the monobloc readvancement".

"Really? How long did that take?"

"Five hours. Yeah. I stood there, you know, just to make sure he didn't mess it up"

A waiter came over with a bottle of champagne. "Ma'am?" the waiter said. "Perfect", Callie said.

"Okay, very good"

"I'd like to make a toast"

"Callie, no toasts", Arizona said. "You know what? Let's just get this dinner over with...".

"Arizona stood for five hours"

"That's not the point"

"Yeah, I know. Do you realise how big a deal it is, you standing for five hours isn't the point? Do you know what else happened today? Derek played ping-pong"

"And lost", Derek said.

"And wanted to keep on playing 'cause his wrist wasn't sore". She looked at Aurora who was texting. "What are you doing?"

"Oh, sorry. I'm just quick texting Owen", Aurora said. "Sexting", Beck corrected.

"Thank you, Beck"

"No, she's trying is what she's doing", Callie continued. "Yeah. You just divorced the guy, and here you are texting him".

"Beck's right. I'm sexting"

"Well, even better. Mark would've loved that. Definitely not you. But the rest of us. He loved sex more than anything else. And we're all having it, so that's... Well, we're trying. We're... Don't you see that? We're all trying. We're trying to move on, which is progress. And it feels weird. And sad and wrong, but it also feels exciting. I miss Mark... And Kelly and Lexie. And I'm... Heartbroken that they're not here tonight. I'm heartbroken, but... I'm also grateful... That all of you are. And I'm gonna celebrate that. And we are gonna toast. Come on. Toast. Pick up your glasses and toast"

The waiter tried to pour some champagne into Meredith's glass but she stopped him. "Oh, no, thank you", she said. "Yes, she's having champagne. Grey, we're all having champagne", Callie argued.

"No, I can't"

"Just try. Try. Come on. Just try. Is it too much to ask you to try?"

"I can't because I'm pregnant"

"What?"

"And I'm happy, so let's celebrate"

"Oh, my God"

They clinked their glasses together.

Alex was walking Lucy into the living room with his hands over her eyes. He uncovered them and pointed at the white couch he had placed in the middle of the living room. "This is just the beginning", he stated. "I'm gonna get more stuff and this place is gonna look great. And I'm sorry". She stared at the couch.

"Say something"

"I think we need to test out this couch"

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah"

He put his hands on her waist, walking her over to the couch and kissing her.

At the restaurant, the girls were all laughing while Derek was on the phone with Owen. "Aurora", he said, calling her over. "Tell your husband to come over here and have a drink". "No, no. He's not my husband", she whispered, taking the phone from him. "I mean, I don't know what you are. I mean, I don't know what we are, but... You know, it doesn't matter. All that matters now is that I'm drunk and happy, and I want you to be here. Drunk and happy with me. Plus the bathrooms lock, so...". She handed the phone back to Derek and sat down.

Cristina handed her phone to a waiter and they all moved closer together. "Around the mommy. Around the mommy", she instructed as they gathered around Meredith. They all smiled.
