Chapter 12: Let's talk: Like mother and son
Dewey wanted to knock on the door when he saw that it was open. He entered the room uncertainly. It was completely different here than usual.
The early mists were brightened by the warm rays of the midday sun. There were no dust or small debris on the shelves and cabinets. Dewey took a few steps forward, and was even more surprised to discover that the large oak bed was empty, and the blue bedding was unscrupulously thrown aside. Dewey raised an eyebrow and felt something soft under his feet. He looked down and saw a light brown pajama, which the owner apparently did not treat as a particularly important thing.
The duck picked up her clothing and put it back on the bed. He could not do anything more, because he heard the creaking of the door behind him. He turned and saw the wide-eyed adult duck. She, too, like the room, looked different. Her hair was a bit shorter, evenly cut, and she wore clean clothes with goggles on her head.
Her eyes glittered when she saw Dewey, and when she took a step towards him, her metal, clearly polished, shone in the sunlight.
"Dewey, I'm so glad to see you!" she approached her son with a quick step and hugged him with all her strength.
"Mom..?!" Dewey could not utter a word out of breath. "You're not sick anymore?"
Della, holding Dewey for a while, finally let him go. She crouched against him and stroked his cheek with his hand.
"The disease just passed! Apparently my body is too strong to overcome it. You know, nothing can stop Della Duck!" Della put both hands on her hips and smiled triumphantly.
"Only Uncle Scrooge and Donald know that, but I wanted to tell you personally, I was even in your room, but I didn't find anybody there, so I came back here and please, you're here honey!"
Dewey suddenly smiled wide and honestly. First time for several days. Since when...uh. No! He didn't want to think about it now. His mother was whole and healthy, not considering her metal leg, and he was the first of three brothers to find out. He didn't expect that this meeting with his mother would make him forget... about the likely end of his friendship with Webby...When he remembered all of his good humor disappeared. Like a bubble. And he didn't want think about it! He felt inside, familiar to him, a sting of sadness and pain. He tried to smile at once, but every blind man would know that the smile was insincere and sad. Della noticed.
She raised her son and sat on the bed. She sat next to him and watched with regret for a moment as Dewey nibbled the sheet with his fingers. She didn't quite know how to start a conversation.
In the end, she did not have any experience.
However, she felt something inside her tell her what to say. She decided to trust her maternal intuition.
"Dewey, do you want to tell me what's bothering you?" Dewey, however, did not answer and clearly avoided eye contact. This courageous, confident, and adventurous boy was now like a little scared mouse.
Della was sure that for the second she felt the same emotions that her son was fighting. She had seen him in this condition.
Sorrow squeezed her heart even more. She raised her hand and brought Dewey closer to her.
Dewey immediately nestled into her and sat there for a few minutes. Della touched her son tenderly on the back and looked at him with her eyes full of concern.
She could not believe that she had missed so many things through her own stupidity. She did not see how the personality of her children was being built, she did not know what they were beginning to be interested in and what not to like.
But Donald survived all this for her.
She envied him, but at the same time she was unbelievably grateful.
He will never pay off that debt.
Now she only dreamed about spending as much as possible with her children and not wasting a single moment. She wanted to build a lasting relationship with them. She knew however, that it wouldn't be easy.
"It's...Webby..."
She was torn by Dewey's words. "What? Why? Have you quarreled?"
She asked slightly surprised. She thought Webby and her son were getting along well. She was wrong again.
"I just did something stupid and ... I destroyed ... our friendship ... irreversibly"
Della hugged her son even harder. The tone he spoke wounded her heart and wanted to protect him from every evil of this world. But he can not save him from him. And she probably regretted that the most. She wanted to tell him that it was nothing, that everything would be fine ... but she knew that nothing would change in this way. She really wanted to help him...but she couldn't...she could not. Not yet. The duck decided to try, however. It's her son after all, and she has to help him. At all costs.
"Honey...everyone makes mistakes ... and that doesn't make you a bad person, but if you make a mistake, even the biggest one, you have to try to fix it otherwise you will not change anything in your life. If you don't try, you'll go down all the time instead of climbing up, I don't know how to be a good mother...but I try...I am trying to fix my mistake from 10 years ago. If you do the same, Webby will appreciate that, I'm sure of it. Friendship like yours can't destroyed by one mistake, trust me Dewey, try all the ways, maybe even she wants to talk to you. I know it's not easy, but since you looked straight into the eyes of many dangerous adventures, you can do it too. I know you can, honey..."
Della smiled slightly and comfortedly at Dewey. She hoped she somehow helped him. Thanks to the fact that he came...she understood a few things herself.
Who would have thought that one meeting brings so many new things.
Dewey stepped away from his mother and looked at her differently, more cheerfully. He smiled slightly and hugged Della again. Then he quickly got out of bed and was already good-natured headed towards the exit.
"Thanks, mom, you helped me a lot!"
He told and he left.
"You're welcome!"Della thought and felt a pleasant feeling in her heart.
