Chapter 6
3rd Person:
"It's perfectly alright if you don't know the answer, I can always ask someone else-"
"A melody is a linear succession of musical notes that the listener perceives as a single entity."
Chan noticed the blank stares he was receiving from his classmates.
"To put it simply, it's a combination of pitch and rhythm."
Chan wasn't lying; he knew that shit by heart.
The said man went back to clicking away at his phone, oblivious to a freckled boy staring at him with his mouth open in awe. Felix glanced at Jisung to see if they shared a similar reaction, but it looked like he was busy avoiding Minho's gaze.
"That is correct, thank you," said Mr. Lee, clearly impressed. He walked back and forth from one end of the classroom to the other, lecturing as he went. "You may have heard of the term 'ear candy'."
Felix giggled into his hand, but to his embarrassment, he was the only one doing so. A couple of students shot him Really? looks, and even Chan rolled his eyes at Felix's immaturity.
"Ear candy is any repetitive part of a song that's is purposely designed to get stuck in a listener's head. It's what makes songs addictive. The most common way to create this is to produce a really good instrumental melody. This is heavily tied in with repetition and looping. Keep it interesting, but don't make it annoying."
Just like your lessons.
Felix had his cheek resting on his palm with his elbow on the table. It had only been about – Felix checked the clock at the front of the room – 15 minutes, and each blink was lasting longer.
Somehow, Chan seemed even more tired than everyone else. He had already switched his phone off and was now spaced out, his eyes fixed on the air in front of him.
Jisung:
The bell rang, telling me that I had spent an entire hour looking everywhere but at him. The second Minho hyung figured out that I blush just by keeping eye contact with him, he attempted to do just that; trying to lock eyes with mine.
I was the first one to walk out the door, leaving Minho behind. But as I did so, I bumped into Hyunjin hyung, which was a surprise.
"Jisung! God, you're the second person I've caught running out of this classroom. What's in there?" He joked.
More like who's in there.
I gave him my best fake laugh and told him it was nothing. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm just here to pick up Felix. We have the next class together."
"Felix, eh? I thought you were whipped for Jeongin."
Hyung seemed to take offense at this. "Bold of you to assume I'm not."
Just as he said this, Chan fast-walked out the door behind me and sped off to his next class.
"Where's he off to?"
I sighed. "I think he's running away from Felix."
"...but he has a class with me and Felix in two minutes."
I blinked at him. Chan hyung was so pointless. "Scratch that then, he's trying to burn calories."
As Hyunjin chuckled, someone smacked the back of his head with a book.
"What the hell Minho?"
"Minho hyung. Where's the respect Hyunjin? Also, he's mine." He looked at me, winked, and walked away.
Hyunjin hyung hands me a bottle of water.
"What—"
"Take it. You look like you're gonna pass out."

Chan:
Lunch.
Imagine actually eating.
I was in a studio, about 5 rooms away from the cafeteria. It was one of the many in the school, a perk of attending a prestigious university. It was my safe place where I could focus on my music, with no distractions.
But I knew my luck was nonexistent.
Because I heard knocking.
Because I heard a voice on the other side of the door.
Because it was Felix, of all fucking people, who came to this studio, of all fucking studios.
Wonderful.
The door opened, revealing a very hyper Felix.
"Hyung?" Felix turned a full 360 degrees.
"Woah. wOOOOAAHHH. This is super cool."
It's a studio right?"
I rolled my eyes for the nth time today. "No, it's a pigpen."
Either Felix wasn't listening, or he chose to ignore my usual sarcasm because he was still looking everywhere, completely unfazed.
"It's like you've never seen a studio before."
"I have, it's just... it looks so... nice. Doesn't it?"
I took a look around myself. It was true; the studio really was a nice place. I don't think I realized it considering I come here almost every day.
"I guess."
I sat down on the chair and continued to produce the track I was working on.
"Oh, that reminds me Hyung, should we get started on the song."
"What do you think I'm doing right now? Start writing the lyrics."
"No! I've never done that before. I wanna do the instrumental."
I don't bother turning around as I responded to Felix's whining. "Too bad."
"Have you written lyrics before?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Then why can't you do it??"
"...because I want to do the track."
The whining stopped. In return I get silence. Felix was one thing, hyper Felix was another, and then there was silent Felix, whom I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet.
I slowly turned around, actually scared, and I'm met with Felix pouting. I raised an eyebrow and scoffed.
"I'm not some soft boy, pouting won't work."
"Hyung can I please do the track?"
"No."
"Can I at least help?"
"No!"
"Please?"
"I said no."
"Please?"
"Are you deaf?"
"Please?"
"N-"
"Please?"
"Feli-"
"Plllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssseeeeeeeee?"
I sighed in frustration and motioned towards one end of the room. "Fine. Grab a chair."
I pretended not to notice Felix pumping his fist in the air and mouthing 'Yesss'.
