Chapter 11

Jisung:

The end of next week. And I hadn't even written a single word for the song. I looked at Minho hyung with worry. He looked shaken up a bit as well, but still put a hand on my shoulder reassuringly.

"It's okay. We'll get it done."

I nodded.

But I wasn't convinced.

Chan:

"...and obviously, the lyrics should fit with the music. You can't just sing songs about love with heavy guitars playing in the background."

Mr. Lee chuckled, looking for a laugh, a smile, or anything. But he didn't receive any. I mean, what did he expect? It's fucking 7:00.

Like always, I didn't bother paying attention. I looked at the clock and hoped that if I stared hard enough, time would go by faster.

"I know some of you aren't that happy about the deadline change, so I'll leave the rest of the class time to you guys."

Mr. Lee went back to his desk while the other kids shuffled around to work with their partners.

Clicking.

I heard clicking.

"Felix," I said.

"Hmmmmm?" He looked at me innocently. That face masked the devil.

I looked at the pen, then back at him, knowing he understood.

He blinked.

Then he smiled.

And started clicking faster.

He was still keeping eye contact with me. Almost like saying, 'What are you gonna do?'

A challenge, basically.

I snatched the pen...

"Hey!"

...threw it on the floor and crushed it with my foot.

Felix stared at the corpse, watching the little spring roll away from the table.

"That was my favorite pen..." he mumbled.

I smiled the same smile he had a couple moments ago and gave a thumbs-up.

Felix looked away. "Hmph."

I reached down for my bag because I had transferred the lyrics we came up with a few nights ago into a notebook. As I took it, as well as my laptop, out, Felix already had another writing utensil in his hand.

He probably read my mind, because he said, "When you choose to annoy the Christopher, you have to come prepared.

I chose not to smack him and flipped to the right page with a sigh.

"Okay, I guess we just move from here. I wrote the chorus last night," I point, "so maybe write some more verses–"

I was cut off by a loud growl.

I looked at Felix, who was holding his stomach. He looked at me, slightly embarrassed, and apologized.

"How are you even hungr–"

Oh.

Felix slightly laughed. "I didn't eat breakfast, remember? You're losing your memory, old man."

Felix laughed even though I smacked his head this time. He started drafting some more words, but I lingered, looking at him for a moment longer.

He didn't eat.

Lunch was soon, but... I still felt bad.

Maybe I should've made some food for h–

No.

Stop it Chan.

He should've woken up. It's his fault.

It's his fault.

3rd Person:

The second school was over, majority of the students rushed back to their dorms to work on their song. Chan immediately made his way to the bedrooms and stopped when he heard rummaging in the kitchen.

"Felix!" Chan called

"Yeah?"

"What are you doing?"

Chan emerged from the hallway and saw a boy opening and closing cabinets. As Felix pulled out of a red box, Chan caught a glimpse of a pelican and little multicolored rings.

"Fruit loops? At 5:00 o'clock? And don't you hate that stuff?" Chan asked.

"The school lunch tastes like cardboard, so I didn't eat anything there, either. And there's no time to make anything right now."

"So you choose to eat plain cereal to...." Chan couldn't find the right word for this. "....quench your hunger?"

Felix grinned and swayed his arms left and right above his head. "It's the quenchiest!"

Chan looked at Felix like he needed to visit the mental hospital.

"Did you.... not get the reference?"

When Chan furrowed his brows in confusion, Felix facepalmed himself. "Avatar!"

"What?"

Felix blinked.

"Avatar. The Last Airbender..." Felix trailed off.

"The last what??"

Felix gaped. He was absolutely horrified.

"You're joking. Tell me you're joking."

"Why are you looking at me like I'm some sort of monster? Is that like a movie or something?"

"Oh my god."

Felix was hyperventilating, dramatically clutching his chest with one hand and hanging to the counter with the other. He didn't watch it. He thought it was a fricking movie.

"You haven't even heard of it?!"

Chan rolled his eyes and headed back to his bedroom. "Stop overreacting. Hurry up and grab your food."

"We're still having a talk about this!" Felix yelled from the kitchen.

------------------------------------

"Gimme a word that rhymes with pieces."

It had been some time over what seemed like two hours, and Felix was getting more antsy, wanting to get up and move around. He had asked for a break multiple times, but Chan wouldn't let him.

The elder scanned Felix's draft.

"You know it doesn't necessarily have to rhyme, right?"

"I want it to though."

"All the previous sentences end in the same word. So you really don't have to–"

"I want to."

It had been a while since Felix last antagonized Chan.

Chan sighed and attempted to reason with Felix. "Too much repetition could–"

"Don't care."

"Felix," Chan said sternly.

"Fine, fine. Jeez." Felix raised his eyebrows and hands defensively and turned his attention back to the notebook.

The pair worked for about ten more minutes in silence. When Felix got bored again, he started swinging his legs, which didn't quite reach the ground because of the height of the chairs. With each swing, Felix increased the speed.

Chan was in the zone but was quickly snapped out of it once he heard the noises the younger was making.

"Felix. Stop it."

The noises continued.

"Felix!"

"Huh?" Felix pretends to hear Chan for the first time. "Oh, sorry."

Chan sighed and went back to adding the bass to the track and didn't notice the mischievous glint in Felix's eyes.

In one swift motion, Felix angled his foot directly at Chan and kicked his leg.

Chan just kept working.

Felix tried again. This time, Chan looked at him.

"Sorry, my foot slipped," Felix said.

Chan narrowed his eyes, but still kept working, which annoyed Felix.

Another kick.

Chan clenched his fists and exhaled, but still didn't pay attention to Felix.

Felix was getting impatient.

Last try

This time, he kicked the leg of the desk hard enough so that everything on top it jumped a centimeter.

Chan whipped around.

"Can you not?"

"Sorry."

"You don't sound sorry."

Felix shrugged at this and pretended to write. He saw Chan go back to the computer from the corner of his eye and decided to wait for a couple minutes before giving yet another startling jolt to the desk.

Chan stood up with a clenched jaw.

"Felix, what the hell? Do you even want to finish this project? We talked about this before. This is the last straw."

Felix stood up as well.

"Oh! That's not good!" He said with fake worry. "Do you want me to go run a quick errand to the store? I could pick up some more straws for you! Any color preference–  AH!"

Felix somehow managed to dodge when Chan lunged at him. He made a beeline for the door, knocking down a couple things in his way to slow his pursuer down.

But for the second time, Felix failed.

Because for the second time, he's grabbed by Chan just before he managed an escape.

Then for the second time, he's pinned to the bed.

And for the second time, he's kicking, laughing, and pleading all at the same time.

"I don't even know why you do it," Chan growled. "You know how it'll end up every time, yet you still continue to do this shit."

"HAHAHAHA I WAS– AGH! I WAS– AHAHAHA! I WAS BORED!"

"You don't think I was?" Chan asked, still continuing to attack Felix. "I was bored too, but we have a project to do. And we're losing so much time because you–"

A sharp knock on the door echoes through the house and for a moment, all that could be heard was Felix's unsteady breathing.

Chan looked behind him then back at Felix with a sharp glare.

"Do. Not. Move."

Felix had his eyes closed, but he could still feel the bed shift and hear the sounds of Chan making his way towards the door.

When Chan opened it, he immediately wanted to close it.

"Why is he screaming again? What are you doing to the poor boy?" Jisung asked.

"Listen to me," Chan snapped. He pointed at himself. "I'm the poor boy. You don't understand, Jisung, he's the spawn of Satan. I'm dying here–"

Chan's brain short-circuited when he saw a fast blur go past him out the door.

He heard the blur yell out something.

"Thanks for saving me Jisung! BYE FELICIA!"

"What the–"

"Oh my god."

Then Jisung saw another blur.

"LEE FUCKING FELIX," Chan screamed.

"YES BANG CHRISTOPHER??" Felix screamed back.

The amount of rage that was coursing through Chan's veins was indescribable, and it caused Chan to speed up. If anyone looked out a school window, they would be seeing two grown ass men cutting through the campus grass. One laughing hysterically, and one looking ready to commit murder.

Suddenly, Felix is tackled, and he lands on the thankfully soft grass with Chan on top of him. Before Chan could do anything, however, Felix caught his arms.

"Waitwaitwait. Please. I know you told me to stop, but I'm just a super fidgety person in general and I sat down in a chair for hours. I mean, can you imagine? Like it was even more boring than Mr. Lee's class, and that's saying something."

Chan looked just about done with him, and Felix rushed to continue.

"But that's not the point. You gotta admit I made some amount of progress with the lyrics, so please, have some mercy."

Felix finished his speech, and only their heavy breathing could be heard. He slowly let go of Chan's arms and flinched, anticipating more tickles, but only felt some weight lift off of him. He slowly opened one eye at a time to see Chan sitting on a wooden bench right next to them.

Felix slowly stood up and just looked around while Chan watched him with no particular emotion.

Suddenly, Felix burst out laughing. He doubled over and put his hands on his knees, almost falling over. Chan pursed his lips.

Something about Felix's laugh made him want to laugh as well.

Once Felix was done, he plopped down next to Chan and got the last of his chuckles out.

"I have never. In my entire life. Fought with another human being this much," Felix said while looking at the sky.

"And I have never, in my entire life, ran after someone that fast for a second time," replied Chan.

Felix looked at Chan with a laugh.

"You're smiling again."

I am?

He was.

"No, you're just hallucinating," Chan said.

Felix studied Chan's features. The smile was still there. It wasn't exactly a broad one; it didn't even reach his eyes. But he looked so....

Felix cleared his throat and stood up.

"Come on," he said.

Chan looked at Felix for a moment but got up with another sigh.

Then they both trudged back to their dorm together, wincing at how exhausted they were.
