Chapter 10

Monika woke up to the tweeting of birds, which was oddly loud. None-the-less, Monika sat up and stretched. Yuri also woke up.

"W-what..?" Monika groaned in her morning voice.

"I.." Yuri yawned in-between her sentence. "I set an alarm last night."

"Y-you did..?" Monika looked to Yuri to see she was also tired.

"Yeah, wanted to make sure we got to the festival in time." Yuri said, turning off the alarm.

The two girls double checked that they had everything, and together carried the things to the school.

"What'dya think the others will think of the poster?" Monika asked, setting the poster on the club room desks.

"Hmm.. I think they'll like it." Yuri said, grabbing half of the fliers and handing them to Monika. "Now we've got things to hang around."

When Monika grabbed the fliers from Yuri, she felt her hand brush against hers. Monika felt her face flush a deep shade of pink, possibly red, and grabbed a roll of tape to go hang the fliers.

As Monika hung the fliers, she had many thoughts run through her head.

"What if confessing, let alone coming out, isn't the right move?"

"She might not think the same, and this could all be a waste."

Once she hung the last flier, she walked back to the club room, head down.

"Hey Monika! Perfect timing! Natsuki and I just finished hanging up our fliers too!" Sayori grinned, hopping to Monika's side.

"Oh, that's great Sayori." Monika gave a fake smile. "The festival starts in around fifteen minutes, and we need at least two people here."

"Monika and I can stay first, and you two and enjoy the daylight you'll have." Yuri said.

"Yuri.. Y-you don't have to spend the festival with me. Spend it how you want to." Monika said from her teacher's desk, her head tiredly resting in her right hand.

"Then.. Then I want to spend it with you Monika." Yuri walked up in front of Monika, a small smile on her face with a tint of red.

Monika felt her face flush a little too.

"I-if.. A-are you sure..?" Monika took her head off her hand, looking to Yuri in disbelief.

"Positive." Yuri replied.

"Well, festival starts soon. Nat and I are gonna head out!" Sayori said, grabbing Natsuki by the hand and dragging her out of the club room.

"Natsuki really lets Sayori call her a nickname?"

Not too soon after Natsuki and Sayori left, the club room was slowly filling up with people who seemed to be interested.

"O-okay, now that everyone is here, lets begin." Monika stood from her chair. "The literature club is a place where anyone of any gender, race, sexuality, excetera are welcome. On the daily we write poems that we share with one another the next day, which is the only homework you will ever really have. To demonstrate some of the poems you'll see if you were to join, I am here with Yuri, a club member, who is going to share her writing with you. After her, I myself will share one of mine."

Both Yuri and Monika shared their poems with the visitors, who seemed to like Yuri's more than Monika's. They answered questions the visitors asked, and once they were finished with one group another would slowly flow in.

Time seemed to fly pretty fast, and before Monika and Yuri knew it, they were already swapping spots with Sayori and Natsuki, who walked in holding hands.

"I heard they had ice cream outside, so why don't we start there?" Yuri suggested as her and Monika roamed the halls, trying to find something interesting.

"She's doing the work for me."

"S-sure! Lets go." Monika grinned, leading Yuri outside to the ice cream station set up not too far away.

Yuri was the one to order their ice creams. She paid too, since Monika didn't have any money. The two took a seat on a nearby picnic blanket from the picnicking club, which nor Yuri or Monika knew existed.

"I heard there was a patriotic club starting." Monika said, trying to start conversation between the two.

"Oh, well pray they don't paint the school red, white, and blue on the fourth." Yuri commented.

Eventually the two girls had a long conversation about the most random things. It started with what they would do over the summer, then eventually got into movies, annoying teachers, and chemistry class.

"What about love?" Yuri asked. "Do you think you'll ever find it?"

Monika felt her face heat up, and was lucky it was getting fairly dark out.

"I-er.. I have somebody in mind... But... I doubt she likes me back.." Monika stammered.

"Is this confessing? Jesus, I'm not even saying 'I love you'."

"She?" Yuri questioned.

"I-is there something wrong with it?" Monika blurted out.

"Not at all, I just... I wish you luck with her." Yuri looked away.

Then it struck Monika. She had to confess now. There would not be a better time. Even so, Monika quickly weighed her options, and decided to wait a little longer to attempt to get a perfect outcome.

"How about you Yuri," Monika said, "do you like anyone?"

"I.. I do..." Yuri stuttered. "She.. She doesn't get my message though, I just know it.."

"She? This is it. Here we go."

"Yuri," Monika got her crush's attention, "you're the one I love."

"Here goes nothing."

"I love you Yuri, so much more than you could ever know. I knew from all the times I saw you beaten and so much more that you needed love, and I want so badly to provide. I just.. I don't think you'll think of me the same... So I tried to blow off all your signs as friendly interactions. I also knew I wasn't enough for you, which was my other doubt. You're incredible Yuri, everything I could ask for. But me? I'm just another one of the popular kids, heck I can hardly call myself popular anymore. I could never compare to you Yuri, and I fear what I want to give to you isn't enough." Monika's eyes were tearing up more with every word, so much so to the point where she was almost bawling her eyes out.

"Monika.. I.." Yuri looked to Monika. "Whatever you want to give will be enough."

Monika sniffled, looking to Yuri.

"I don't care what you see or say about yourself, you're you," Yuri said, taking hold of Monika's hands, "and that's enough for me."

Monika sniffled again, taking one of her hands to quickly wipe a few tears.

"You're beautiful to me Monika." Yuri smiled.

Just on time with the crack of the fireworks, Yuri pulled Monika into a deep, passionate kiss. Monika melted into the kiss, and the two kissed for a good twenty seconds before they pulled away in unison. The fireworks from the patriotic club were purple and green (for whatever reason), the perfect colors for the situation in Monika's mind.

"I think I got my answer to my confession."

"A-are we going to tell the others?" Monika asked, still holding hands with Yuri.

"We'll let them figure it out." Yuri said, pulling her hands away and standing up.

The two walked back to the club room hand in hand to see Sayori and Natsuki busy taking down some of the decorations, piling them up on the teacher's desk.

"Your idea worked Yuri!" Sayori cheered out, setting down the candles she had on a nearby desk.

"Heh.." Yuri rubbed the back of her head with her free hand. "I may have had a whole plan for tonight..."

Monika couldn't help but smile.

"I did too, I just didn't tell Sayori." Monika said.

The two spent the night at Yuri's house, since her bed was large enough to fit the both of them. Yes, they slept in the same bed, cuddling each other, and eventually falling asleep.

And that's their story.
