Chapter Six
Drew was resting her head on her mom's shoulder, laughing along with the beloved older lady next to her at the funny scenes in the Korean series.
The mom and daughter were half sitting on the bed while the nanny was laying on the couch next to them with a bowl of chips on her tummy.
The trio kept giggling, but at the same time, the two knew better the older lady would need a little break since she had wasted so much energy laughing.
Gratefully, the episode ended. They made an excuse and changed the channel to watch the news. The nanny and younger girl patiently explained for a couple of minutes and rewarded the older lady with her favorite plain yogurt with banana.
Thankfully, the older lady clapped her hands happily and asked them to get that bowl of yummy yogurt for her.
After happy yogurt time, the older lady was distracted by the National Geography show and she seemed intrigued by the adorably and cuddly koala bears, and the nanny and the younger girl decided to let the older lady enjoy the tv show.
In the meantime, Drew checked her phone since the time had passed 8.30 pm. She was getting worried for the brunette since she had checked the phone from time to time as soon as she finished her shower once she was home.
Drew quickly checked her phone when she felt a vibration from it. It was an unknown number that was evidently the cutie's text she had been looking for.
"Hi Drew, Giselle here. I'm so sorry for the lateness. I just got in the car safe and sound after the lovebird guardians walked me to my car. I will tell you more after I'm home. Thank you for your concern. Good night, have a great weekend ahead!"
Drew was half relieved after reading a message from the cutie. However, she still worries about Giselle, and she needed to know the adorable brunette reached home sound and safe.
She started typing the message in return, but her left thumb hovered over the phone. She was debating whether making a call to Giselle to be her companion was a great idea. They seemed better than acquaintances but not close as friends yet.
Was that too much to care about a newbie's safety?
Well, it was such bullshit!
Drew shook her head to brush off her battle as she quickly turned to her mom and asked softly, "Mom, mind if I go out and make a phone call? It won't be long."
The older lady pouted her lips and shook her head slowly, "Why don't you make a phone call here instead? It's Friday, Min Min. You should spend more time with me."
"I agree with your mom," Delilah piped in with a grin.
Drew's face tinted and she was grateful they left a dim light in the living room, quickly made an excuse, "But I might interrupt the nice show."
"Oh, it doesn't matter. Just don't leave me, Min. Stay here," The older lady insisted but more like pleading with her daughter and shot a pair of puppy dog eyes at her. "You always hang out with your friends every night and go home late."
Drew couldn't help but chuckle since her mom had jumbled up the memories in Drew's early 20 when she had first started to work. Those were the times she tried to get acquainted with her lady boss and colleagues and they would go for Happy hour, drinking beers every weekday after work.
Drew was grateful they started to do that less after they got busy and some of the colleagues had drama issues between them.
"I'll be right back!" Drew quickly said as she pecked her mom's cheek and dashed upstairs to take her earphone from her room.
She panted a little after a short run as she carefully climbed onto the bed and plugged the earphone into her phone. The older lady happily patted her lap for her daughter to lay on it as the daughter obediently but carefully laid down and let her head lay on her mom's lap and propped her feet on the bed.
Drew knew she had delayed about 5 minutes as she swiftly plugged the earphone into her ears and made a call to her adorable coworker.
The phone was ringing as Drew's heartbeat rate was increasing while she was waiting for the brunette to pick up the phone. After a few rings, Drew's heart skipped a beat when the call was connected.
"Hi, Drew."
The voice from another line was lovely and a little shaky. Drew's heartbeat was beating fast, and she was thinking about what she needed to talk about after greeting the cutie in return.
"H-Hello? Is there anything you wanna ask about?"
'God Dammit! Say something Drew!' Drew mentally kicked herself.
Drew greeted, "Hey, Giselle. I..." Drew trailed off as she clamped her eyes and said in a small voice, "I just wanted to check on you and see if you're okay."
"Yeah, I'm okay, and the traffic is good," Giselle said with a chuckle and asked, "What are you up to? Are you having the K-Series marathon with your mom?"
Drew always liked how chill Giselle was and she always started with great conversation whenever they talked. The tension eventually loosened up a little as the nervous girl smiled to herself and replied, "Not at the moment, we are watching Nat Geo."
"Oh, that is nice! Are you guys like Nat Geo? What type of animals do you like to watch?"
"Yes, we like it. We enjoy watching any kind of animal as long as they're cute and do no harm," Drew chuckled. She was enjoying talking with the girl from the other line and seemed intrigued by the topic they were sharing.
"I would prefer the ocean animals show. I like dolphins!"
"Dolphins are lovely," Drew's eyes brightened up with a grin, she thought that Giselle was bubbly like them. In the meantime, she was thinking of asking Giselle about the text she had sent. "So, what happened just now?"
"We were supposed to leave earlier, but Amy asked me to stay back because she overheard Tom having a phone call with Monica outside of her office, saying that he would see her around. So, we had to wait until the coast was clear before we left. But it took them about 20 minutes, and then we finally could escape."
Drew had put two to two together. Tom might get his prize by the story from Giselle, she shook her head in disbelief and felt disgusted, "Seriously? He is a pig."
"No, we can't degrade those adorable animals. He is even worse!" Giselle corrected like a teacher from another line.
Drew laughed at Giselle's cuteness and agreed, "You're right. He is a disgusting prick instead." Drew giggled when her mom gently pinched her face as she looked at her mom who furrowed her eyebrows at her in disapproval at her language. She mouthed sorry to her mom as the lady's face softened and she smiled and gently cradled her daughter's face.
"That's perfect to put this 'surname' on him!"
Drew smiled at the sweet voice dripped in distaste and she jested, "So, Amy is the best spy for us, huh?"
"Yes, she is!"
Drew was enjoying this little talk with Giselle since they never had so much spare time to talk aside from their lunch hour. She checked the time on her phone and it had passed 45 minutes. She wondered how far the place to Giselle's home was from her workplace.
Even though she didn't want to end their nice conversation soon, she couldn't keep the nice girl on the other line to talk.
"I know It might be too personal for me to ask. How far is your home from our office?" Drew finally asked and quickly added, "You can keep it from being disclosed if you are uncomfortable with that."
There were a few seconds of silence, and a soft hum from Giselle, "Hmmm... It isn't too far, about 50 minutes. I'll gonna reach my home soon. Anyway, my bad for keeping you on the line. I was carried away." A peal of laughter was sweet and tantalizing as always and Drew was relieved by that.
"No, not at all. I'm just asking because..." Drew trailed off and she tried to find a reasonable answer which would make Giselle comfortable.
"Because I will feel better after I know that you have reached home. It's not safe for a girl to drive outside alone late at night," Drew explained and hoped the brunette would be okay with that.
"Thank you, Drew. That's very sweet."
The voice from the other line was soft and with a hint of a smile and Drew could feel how much Giselle appreciated her concern by the evidence of the soothing tone.
"Anytime. That is what a senior is supposed to do. Take care of her co-worker," Drew half-joked and earned a cute chuckle from another line.
"I'm lucky to have such a nice senior," Giselle said and she added, "Oh, I'm home."
"I'm glad. So, it's time for me to bid good night to you," Drew said while holding her mom's hand from her cheek and putting it on her stomach.
"Thank you for staying with me while I was driving home. Good night, Drew," Giselle said in a delighted tone.
"Sweet dreams, Giselle. See ya," Drew smiled and waited for the girl from another line to end the call.
"Bye!" Giselle said as she ended the call after a beat.
"I know we work with each other for a short time, but I'm really happy to meet a nice senior like you. Thank you for taking care of me. I hope you'll have a nice weekend ahead with your family. I'll see you on Monday!"
"I'm glad to meet a nice colleague like you. Don't mention, I'm happy to help you any time. Thank you, same goes for you. See you on Monday!"
Drew was smiling contently as she looked at her mom who was enjoying the Nat Geo. Drew turned to look at the tv screen since her mom was intrigued by the show. It was a group of dolphins swimming in the ocean. She couldn't help but instantly think about the brunette who she just had a call with since she was a dolphin lover.
Fridays were the day for the two ladies' happy hour after they tug the older lady into her bed. Delilah and Drew were sitting on the porch of the house, half a dozen beers served on the small table, and they sat across each other on the rattan chairs.
Drew sighed in satisfaction and felt revived after a long day of a busy week.
"Are there any stories you're gonna share with me?" Delilah asked with a grin.
Drew chuckled before taking another sip of the can of beer and admitted, "I met a nice new co-worker."
"It seems like you got over Amy," Delilah smiled and said, "She is a sweet girl, I'm happy you are ready to move on."
"No, it's not what you think like that, Lilah," Drew had explained this many times to her nanny as she covered her face with her hands and added, "I was just admiring Amy and I knew it would not gonna happen in between us."
"But you were hurt," Delilah said while resting a hand on her chest part and she wondered out, "Let me guess, you seemed like get occupied with your new coworker. What's her name?"
"How can you tell my new co-worker is a girl?" Drew wondered out loud.
"I don't think you're gonna look for a man. The way you told me about Amy, I knew you like girls a lot," the nanny giggled as Drew groaned in embarrassment.
"Now you're gonna tell me her name and show me her picture, young lady," Delilah smirked as she stretched out her right hand and wiggled her fingers.
Drew tried to save Giselle's contact, but she found out Giselle sent an adorable emoji that was a sweet good night kiss. Drew smiled to herself before saving the number and the picture of Giselle appearing on WhatsApp was fascinating in her plain white t-shirt and ripped jeans. Her chestnut color permed hair was longer, and the background matching was a sunny blue sky. Overall, it was exactly like a goddess coming down to earth.
"It seems like this girl has taken the crown from Amy. My patience is running thin. Hurry up! Show me her picture," Delilah said and seemed eager to see what Giselle looks like.
Drew chuckled shyly as she left Giselle's picture on the screen and passed her phone to her nanny. "Her name is Giselle," Drew said as she quickly started chugging in the beer and was ready to get interrogated by her nanny.
"Oh Jesus, she is just a sweetheart. She and Amy are pretty in different ways," Delilah chuckled and joked, "If Amy is still single, I don't mind if you get the two of them together."
"No way, Lilah. Polygamy is disallowed in here, and let's not talk about same-gender relationships either," Drew interjected with a sigh and felt hopeless.
"Take it easy, Min. When you find a girl, don't hesitate. Go for it. You can always think about immigrating to the legal LGBTQ marriage countries," the nanny assured Drew.
"I don't know, Lilah. Look at Amy, I had put a tiny hope that she would even like me. But that was not what I had expected," Drew started venting and Delilah looked at Drew and opened her ears for her.
"What do you think about Giselle?" Delilah asked while she took a sip of her beer and popped a peanut into her mouth.
"She is cute, and I like the way she smiles at me. We were busy but we could talk and share a lot like an open book whenever we were having our lunchtime. Except for my sexuality, and I would keep that to myself at the moment," Drew said and she felt a wrench in her gut knowing that they probably would have the same ending as Amy and herself. Best friends.
Beer would always be the best remedy like a therapist for Drew to open up, but she hated those emotions that she couldn't bury deep into her heart and bottle up them. Her heart was aching whenever she thought of Giselle looking for a man instead of a woman like Amy did.
Drew chugged the beer to swallow her emotion down to her gut instead of letting her tears pool out from her eyes.
"Think of the bright side, Min Min. It won't hurt to make nice and pretty friends at your workplace. I assure you that they will make you happy ok?" Delilah's motherly voice was soothing and always made Drew feel better after opening up.
The emotion from the bottom of Drew's heart eventually oozed out along with her tears, feeling overwhelmed, reached over to her nanny and hugged her firmly, "You're right, Lilah. They are great friends of mine. I'm really happy to have them around."
Drew sat back on her rattan chair and quickly wiped off the tears and asked, "I wonder if dad and mom get disappointed that I like girls?"
"What do you think, Min Min? You are their precious girl. They will always love you regardless of your sexuality. I know they would give you full support and courage if they knew you like girls," Delilah assured Drew and gently patted her hand.
Drew entwined her nanny's hand and smiled at her in appreciation, "Thank you for letting me vent. I wish dad and mom can hear from me." She turned to look at her sleeping mom in the living room as she sighed softly to herself.
Drew never realized anything different about her sexuality until she grew interested in Amy. She was confused and Delilah sensed something wrong with her and set Happy Hour time for them every Friday for Drew to open up. Gratefully, this worked for them.
Drew was regretting everything was too late after she found out about her sexuality after her dad had passed and her mom was having Alzheimer's.
Drew slipped her hand from her nanny as she took a new can of beer, uncapped it and made a toast with her nanny and said, "Aramaiti, Lilah."
"Aramaiti!" Delilah grinned and made a toast with Drew.
