Chapter 5

Rosaline's POV

"Typical cliche romantic movie moment, amiright?" Giggles Fedosia.

"Except we're NOT star-crossed lovers." I reply, still staring around in wonder.

"I've always wanted to sit here and make daisy chains, but I don't like the idea of picking the poor daisies." Fedosia pouts, lying down in the grass.

"Really, Fedosia? What if there are serial killers lurking in this wood?" I ask snappily, but I'm not really cross.

This is beautiful.

Fedosia is right, it's like the kind of place you'll only find in movies.

In fairytales.

Last time I came here, it was midday.

I thought it was beautiful then, but it's obviously ten times as stunning now.

"Your hair glows pinky-orange in the sunset. It looks nice." Fedosia says, her eyes glinting in the amber light.

"Whatever. Now are we going to go home, or what?" I grumble.

I hope she begs me to stay.

I don't want to leave.

"Well if you want to, I'll come with you so you don't have to walk back alone, but I rather hoped you'd stay until the stars came out." Fedosia says hopefully, resting her chin on her hands as she lies in the grass.

"Oh fine." I snap.

Fedosia smirks slightly, batting her eyelashes, and I can see she sees right through me.

I turn away and walk towards the pond.

A million shades of amber dance off the surface, glittering like tiny flame-like sparkles.

I see the reflection of my face as I look down at the gentle ripple of the clear water.

I walk onto the bridge, which is wooden and painted navy, but now the paint is cracked and faded.

I peer down at the water again, looking at the lilypads and pearly waterlilies, letting my arm hang over the edge of the bridge.

My fingers touch the cold water and cause ripples.

"Lie down with me and watch the sky." Fedosia calls.

I look up.

She's flat on her back on the grass, staring up at the sky, smiling.

"Fedosia, I barely know you. You could have arranged for a child abductor to hide somewhere around here." I moan.

"I can assure you I haven't."

"This still doesn't mean we're friends. Your just some kid I met who knows a nice place to go at night." I warn her.

"Okay, darling."

I lie down on the soft grass, feeling it ticking the back of my neck.

The sky slowly darkens to a beautiful rose-red, then violet, then it darkens to a navy-purple, and little twinkling stars start appearing over a period of time.

I lie there, I can feel my arms and legs go numb but I don't care.

"Do you often stargaze?" Fedosia asks, rolling over to me.

I feel a lock of her hair ticking my face.

"No. I'm not a nerd."

"Stargazing isn't NERDY. It's beautiful." Sighs Fedosia, raising an eyebrow at me.

The stars seem so far away, yet so close.

It's like it's a whole new universe up there.

"You know there's a theory humans are made of stardust, right?" Fedosia asks, softly.

"Sure. If we were all made of stars, why are there bad people in the world?"

"I don't know." Fedosia says.

Then there is a silence.

I stand up, my legs aching.

The cool breeze makes my eyes sting and my hair flutter, and I glance over at the pond.

It shimmers a beautiful crystal white, and the grass is lit up by beautiful moonlight.

"I'm going home." I say, firmly. "This is stupid, it's a school night.

"True."

"And it's exceedingly dangerous."

"If you say so."

"I'm going." Then I turn and walk off through the moonlight.

"Uh, wrong way." Fedosia giggles.

"Ugh, whatever. Take me back." I snap.

Fedosia smiles radiantly, and takes my hand, leading me across the grass towards the tall fir trees.

"You're the first person who isn't my family who i've taken here at night, Rosaline."

"Why me? Why am I so special? I barely know you."

I don't think she hears.

I try not to look behind me as we run through the shadowy forest, refusing to admit that I'm scared.

But inwardly, I feel happy.

This is the best night I've had in the last two months.

I wasn't expecting this, out of all things.

To actually enjoy a night out with an annoying kid who I'm only hanging out with in return for her leaving me alone..
