Chapter 8
Elliott kept his gaze down, not daring to look up at me. I sighed.
"Do..." He mumbled quietly, "Do you miss him, too?"
I pondered on my words before they spilled from my lips. I didn't want to upset Seth, but in a short matter of time, Elliott had become dangerously important to me. More important than Seth had been, sometimes.
"No, I don't. I should leave it, shouldn't I?"
"Yeah, I guess so. It's your decision."
"Thanks, Elliott."
"I didn't really do too much," Elliott chuckled to me coyly. "I, uh... Are you okay with this decision? If you want to stop being friends so that you can-"
"What?" I asked, then repeated, "Stop being friends with you for someone who threw away a friendship just because they don't like not getting all the attention? No, no way, Elliott."
He looked down shyly. "Um, thanks, I guess," he said after clearing his throat and getting up abruptly. "Do you want me to leave while you call him?"
"No, you can stay," I told him and relief rushed through my veins as he nodded and plopped back down next to me. I smiled at him gratefully and he got the message.
Elliott must've noticed my frantically shaking hands as I held my phone in front of me, scrolling through my contacts to reach Seth's number, because he gripped my hand like he had earlier on. I pressed on it, and breathed in sharply as I hit the call button.
Seth answered instantly, which both creeped me out and worried me. "Hello?"
"It's me," I informed him. I promised myself I'd stay calm. "I'm sorry, Seth. I can't just miraculously forgive you after you've ditched me for a girl who taunted me about the accident. You've thrown away a friendship that I thought was going to last a lifetime, just because you don't want me to be friends with someone. I want to be friends with Elliott."
Elliott squeezed my hand softly but he was looking out of the window. Whether it was subconscious or not, I never knew. I continued talking to Seth. "I'm not choosing him over you. I'm just choosing what I think is right, and that is certainly not someone who betrayed me like this."
"I didn't want to hurt you," Seth growled, "but you're being a bit selfish, aren't you? You're saying that I ditched you for Ella - which, yeah, maybe I did - but you're ditching me for Elliott no matter what excuses you can come up with. I was going to give you a second chance-"
"I think you're the one who needs a second chance, Seth. You sure as hell aren't getting it," I hissed back as I hung up on him and flung my phone across my bed as if it were scorching hot. I glared at it and Elliott pulled me closer to him softly.
It was almost as if he knew that tears of pure anger were going to spill from my eyes. Frustration was eating me up from the inside, and I wished that Seth was actually here so I could deck him. Unfortunately, he wasn't, so I resorted to angry crying. It let out emotions I didn't even think I was feeling. Throughout all of this, Elliott held me close to him and stroked my hair like I was a puppy he'd just gotten. I felt my eyelids begin to get heavy, so I whispered, "You should probably go."
"What if I don't want to?" Elliott replied in a voice as sleepy as mine. I peeked up at him from under my hair and he was staring at me with an intensity I would've previously deemed unimaginable.
"Then..." I mumbled back, "Then... I don't know, Elliott."
"Would you mind if I stayed here?"
"As long as we stay like this, no."
"Okay," Elliott muttered in a hushed voice. His breath tickled my ear and I shivered, my body naturally becoming flush with his. I felt his warmth envelope me, and I became incredibly comfortable. I allowed my drowsiness to overtake me and my head flopped against his welcoming chest as sleep invited me in.
