Harry made his was towards the break room with his lunch, where Liam and Zayn were sitting. He smiled slightly, greeting them each individually before sitting down across from the three co-workers.
"This is gonna suck," Harry let out a stressed sigh, running his fingers through his semi long curly hair. "I have a twenty-seven year old who needs a heart transplant."
Liam chuckles slightly, mostly to himself, "Harry, your a heart surgeon, that's what you do. I'm sure by now you're used to the program."
Harry rolled his eyes, "No, it's just... he's in his twenty's and almost early thirties. He could be out traveling, or meeting people, and just living life. But instead he's here waiting for a god damn heart," he stated, irritated, taking a bite out of a sandwich, "and you know my feelings on heart transplants already," he says with his mouth full, then swallows.
For the remainder of the lunch hour Harry, Liam, and Zayn all talked about the beginning of the their day. Discussing different surgeries, or sharing how some of the patients were extremely snobby and rude. Harry hated when he had patients that were that way. It was almost as if they were ungrateful for all the hard work any of the doctors would put into saving the patients lives. Of course he knew it was a part of life, and that all of this was his job. It was his job to save people's lives and that not everything was perfect.
Harry's pager began to beep, alerting him to check up on patients that he had, making sure everything was okay with everyone. "Duty calls," he said, slightly frowning, "I guess I'll just see you later?" the other two both nodded in unison before they waved Harry off.
Walking over to the elevator, Harry walked in calmly and pressed the button that led to the second floor. "Room 200," he said to himself, voice slightly trailing off.
As he walked into the room, he greeted the man that went by the name off Mr. Banks. He was going into his 60's and was in for a recent heart attack. "Ah, Harry my boy!" Mr. Banks exclaimed, extending his arm and waiting for Harry to come closer before patting him on the back from where he laid.
"How have you been feeling today, sir?" Harry politely asked with a small smile on his face.
"Nothing new, everything for the most part has been feeling okay today," Harry wrote down the information on the man's chart before smiling once more at the him.
"That's great, you're getting better. We should be able to release you soon."
Mr. Banks nodded.
"Do you need anything at all sir?" Mr. Banks shook his head before laughing slightly.
"I'll be fine for now, but thank you," Harry nodded with a smile before leaving the room and heading over to his next patient.
Room 201, Louis Tomlinson.
Harry knocked on the door before slowly opening it to see louis. The boy in the bed looked up to see harry smiling at him, dimples in his cheeks. Louis had to admit, they were adorable; so adorable he couldn't help but smile back.
"Hello, how are you feeling?" he asked, walking over to the medical supplies in the corner.
"I guess you could say I'm alright," Louis replied sitting up from his spot.
"No chest pains at all?" Harry asked with concern in his voice.
"Uh, just a few," he said nervously.
"Honesty works the best in this hospital you know?" Harry stated, slightly smirking.
"I'm just scared," Louis whimpered, voice trailing softer.
"Don't be scared Louis. Everything will be okay, I promise. You just need to be honest and tell me when you're having problems with your heart or anything at all."
Louis, for the most part felt fine. But whenever he did get a chest pain, he always told himself that it was nothing, that he would be fine. But Harry was right. He would need to tell the truth. This wasn't some game. This was his life that depended on him and his actions.
Louis nodded, and Harry continued, "If you don't mind I'm going to take your blood pressure and check your heart rate. I'm sure you know the drill."
Louis nodded, reaching to his phone when it started ringing from the side table, "Uh, it's my mother, could I-"
"Go ahead," Harry laughed, walking over to the Louis' bed.
"Mum?" Louis questioned curiously.
"Louis!" the woman shrieked loudly through the phone, "Louis, love, how are you?"
Harry started applying the blood pressure onto louis' arms, smirking at the screech heard from the phone. "I'm okay... I'm uh, I'm actually currently-"
"Mr. Styles, is your patient in room 201, scheduled for any scans?"
Harry nodded and gave the women a thumbs up, and with that she walked away. "Louis, this isn't HIV or anything is it?"
Louis' mouth fell open in shock. "G-god no mum!"
She sighed, "Good. Your last boyfriend just... he didn't seem like a good guy. I always had a feeling he was sleeping with other people," she told him, which in return made him frown.
"Mum I- just, no, it's not that. I'm fine Kind of," he winced at his own words.
Harry wrapped the band around Louis' arm to get his blood pressure, and smiled when he only got good results. "Not bad" he whispered to himself, writing down the information. Harry looked at the heart monitor and recognized it was beating a bit faster than normal. He took Louis' hand, slightly pressing down on his pressure point to calm him down a bit.
"Mother... I-I need a new heart," Harry couldn't hear a response, but he could only assume it wasn't a happy one. "I promise Mum everything will be okay. I have a very nice doctor, he's sure everything will be okay," Louis replied softly.
"Okay I love you too... bye." Louis hung up the phone and groaned burying his face in his hands.
"I'm so sorry that was embarrassing," his voice was muffled.
Harry furrowed his eyebrows before sitting in the chair that was next to the bed, "Why's that?"
Louis sighed before looking back up at Harry, "My mother has always been awkward about my sexuality," he paused for a minute. All of Harrys attention was on Louis. "She's accepted me of course, but whenever I've had a boyfriend she's so... weird, about it," he frowned, "and god I literally just had possibly the most unnecessary conversation with her in front of you!"
Harry laughs before getting up and getting a pill and a styrofoam cup water for Louis. "This is for your chest pains," he said, smiling and handing Louis the cup.
"Don't worry Louis, my Mum was the same about my sexuality as well when I first came out. She's accepted me, but bringing over a boyfriend used to be the most dreaded thing," he told him. And even though he didn't know if sharing all that was the right move, there was no going back.
Louis eyes widened just the slightest. Harry noticed it. "There's more gay people around here than you may notice. Guess gaydar isn't an actual thing," he joked. Louis snorted, containing his laugh.
Before Louis could say anything more, Harry's pager was going off, "Oh, um, that's the boss. I gotta go, but I'll be back tomorrow alright?" he stood from his seat, backing out of the room. Leaving Louis silent and alone with him and his curious thoughts.
