Chapter 1

Astrid's P.O.V.

"...And in blue, Florida's very own Queen of the sea, Astrid Hofferson," the announcer introduces me and I look around as they start playing my theme song.

Surf's up, get down, no one's gon' take her crown!

She whips her hair,

And she does it with flair

Surf's up, get down, no one's gon' take her crown!

She's the queen of the sea....

I drew my hand across my throat before the record died. I hated my theme song, it was so barbie-ish. "Hehe. Guess she's just not in the mood. Maybe she's in the mood for showin' everyone how it's done!" I gave the beach a thumbs up at that as the water lapped over my board.

"Hey, Astrid," my friend, Heather, paddled to my side before sitting up. She flipped her soaked hair over her shoulder before looking at me. "You gotta promise me to rip those waves apart! Rip the surfers apart if you have to, I don't care! Just rule the water!" she shouted.

"When do I not?" I say in mock arrogance. I then bend my body to the side and dunk my head in the water. I then flick my head back up and my hair whips water droplets in an arch over me, making wolf-whistles sound from the beach.

"I swear you're a dude-magnet," she mutters after the starting horn blows and we start paddling deeper into the waves.

When we're out far enough, we sit on our boards and wait for the first wave. I saw the water starting to rise, not too far away, and turned around before ripping my hands through the water. A few of the other surfers followed me but I was the first to pull my knees up and rise to my feet. The crowd went wild as I zoomed across the water, droplets hitting my face like a gentle mist. I skimmed a little off the brim of the wave before grabbing the edge of my board and jumping into the air with a 360 spin. I land with a small splash before finding my balance again. It wasn't until now that I realized the announcer had been speaking.

"And she does a beautiful trim from the rim with a twirl, graceful as a ballerina. Will she stop there?" the crowd booed and hissed at the suggestion so I waved to the beach before jumping from the water and doing a 180 before heading the other way, across the wave. "And she never disappoints!" the announcer cheers as I head back to the top of the wave and pull my board to my body. When I'm in the air, I do a spin before landing in the water and paddling out to the group again, waiting for the next wave. "Yet again. A perfect score," was heard from the beach and Heather applauds me as I reach the wave zone.

"That was great, Astrid!" she cheered and I roll my eyes in disappointment.

"It was textbook. Where's my tube?" I mutter.

"You'll get it; it's still early. You always get a tube," she says before paddling for a wave. I paddled after her and duck-dived under it as it got too high, watching Heather take it as I come out the other side. She trailed her fingers through the wall of water before doing her signature hand stand. I cheer her on as she distributes her weight to make the board turn backwards. She then goes back to a traditional stand and heads the other way.

"And there's the Heather Stand Switcher. The only stunt that can be pulled off by a single person," the announcer says as Heather jumps off her board and dives over the top of the wave, "That outta get her some points."

"That was amazing Heather," I tell her when she paddles up to me.

"I lost my balance when I was standing up. Almost tipped," she complains as she wrings out her hair.

"Well, looks like you got almost a perfect score. It was a short ride. If it was a tad longer, they would have given you all 10's," I tell her.

"Sweet," she says distractedly, looking at the horizon. "You might wanna start paddling," she adds and I turn to see the perfect potential tube.

"Thanks, wish me luck," I say and she calls "good luck" after me as I travel at my top speed to meet the wall of salt water.

I get to the base and turn around before ripping my fingers through the water. I'm about to stand up but someone shoots passed me and I loose my train of thought, causing me to get swept upward. All I could make out was a green board, shirt, and a mask, before I get thrust into the ocean. I resurface with a gasp before grabbing my board. I right it before climbing on and catching my breath. I watched the guy ride my tube as the crowd went crazy.

"It looks like Astrid has been dethroned! Who is this mysterious new King of the waves? How's she gonna react to her kingdom being overruled?" the announcer asks. Heather paddles up to me as the guy goes back to the wave zone.

"Who is that?" she asks.

"Heck if I know. Who where's a mask when they surf?"

"Apparently him," she replies.

"Well, who was in green?" I ask.

"I dunno. I was listening for my own name," she says.

"Everyone was," a girl near by says.

"Amazing how self-concerned a group of people can be," I observe.

"I think his name was Hayden or something," she adds.

"Really?" Heather says, "What kind of name is Hayden?"

"I don't know," I laugh.

"Well, let's go. They're about to blow the horn," the girl says and we all go back to the wave zone. The ocean was still and calm, not a wave in sight.

"Uh-oh. Looks like Astrid might not get those points back to retrieve her crowd. Astrid Hofferson in blue, what do you plan to do?" the announcer says and I just glare at the water as I felt all eyes move to me. I didn't know what I was gonna do. Suddenly, I felt something from my dragon-scale necklace. It started as a gentle pull, then it became a tug. And the tug became a yank. I slowly started paddling out before a wave started to sluggishly rise above my head. "Oh, looks like Astrid's found her crowning wave. What will the judges think of her performance?"

I turned and started paddling before getting swept up by the water. I pull my knees up and stand before putting my weight on my front foot and skimming down the wall. Suddenly, a long whistle sounded from the wave zone and I glanced over to see Mask clapping and cheering me on, along with Heather and everyone on the beach. It confused me a little until I felt a drop of water on the top of my head. I looked up to see an arch of glass flowing over my head. I looked behind me to see the water collapsing on itself. Reaching my hand up, I trailed my fingers through the roof of the large tube and had droplets fall in my wake. This was the best tube I've ever ridden. I heard the announcer talking but I could barely understand what he was saying because of the water roaring in my ears.

"And it's turned into a beautiful tube, large enough to fit an orca. All we can see is our queen's outline. Will she make it out?" I felt the saltwater landing in my hair before I put my weight forward and emerged from the tube with a smile to the beach. I then steer away from the tubes crashing and rode in front of it and in a diagonal line to the wave zone. As I drew near I jumped off my board, when the ending horn went of, and cannon-balled into the water as my board rushed on. I resurfaced and got back on my board before high-fiving Heather.

"It looks like the sea now has two rulers. Ladies and gentlemen of Miami beach, bow before the king and queen of the waves, Hayden Hadders, and Astrid Hofferson!" Everyone went wild and I looked at the guy with the mask to see him waving to them. He saw and snapped before shooting a finger gun at me, making me feel like he winked. I rolled my eyes with a shudder before paddling with Heather to the shore.

"Are you jealous that you're not the sole ruler anymore?" she asks.

"Heck no. Just hope they don't start-" I cut off as they play my theme song. I take a quick look around before grabbing the sides of my board and tipping it over so that I'm hidden by the water. I feel a tap on my leg, which was wrapped around my board, and flipped back over to hear that they had turned the music off.

"You really don't like that song, do you?" a voice chuckles and I look to my left to see Hayden had paddled up to Heather and I. Suddenly, they started playing Uptown Funk and confusion clouded my mind.

"The new king is guaranteed to send his funky style through the waves," the announcer says and I look at Hayden.

"Your theme song?" I ask and he nods.

"Yeah. What they said about you, when you were under, was more catchy though," he says and I roll my eyes.

"What that 'She's sexy and she knows it'? And then a bunch of stuff about how I'm going to keep running these waters; how no ones ever gonna completely dethrone me no matter how much they want to?" I ask.

"Uh, do they say it a lot?" he asks with amusement.

"Only after every one of her competitions," Heather says and I sigh in exasperation as she starts talking about my past glories, paddling away from the conversatio.
