Chapter 5
The club sits at a grand table, everyone looking worn out, too tired to deal with the twins being gone. Hani sits next to me. Mori keeps an eye on him. The smaller boy gobbles down cake, occasionally asking if I want a slice. I always shake my head no.
"I've only known the twins since they were in middle school, but they definitely stood out," Tamaki sighs and sits in his chair. "It seemed like they kept everyone at a distance except each other."
Everyone slouches in their seats.
Tamaki chuckles.
"Believe it or not, they were even more warped back then. When you stop and think about it, maybe this fight is a good thing for them. Maybe it means that the twins are expanding their horizons a bit. We should just leave them alone and let them work it out."
I roll my eyes and catch Mori raising his eyebrow at me. It might have been taken the wrong way, as if I don't care about the twins. I do, even without knowing them long, it's just this whole fight feels so forced.
'I'll tell you later,' I mouth to him. He nods and we pay attention to the discussion at hand.
"If they've never fought before, would they even know how to make up?" Haruhi wonders. She looks out the window in thought, the sunlight hitting her hair so beautifully. I admire her sticking with the club and the antics for so long, considering how tired she alway is. I would like to hang out with her more and expand this friendship.
The twins have entered the Host Club, the guests freezing in tension, thick enough to cut with a knife. One of them must have said something awful, because they started hurling insults and objects at each other. They even got ahold of Usa-Chan, Hani's bunny, and threw that into an ever growing pile of furniture.
I continue to sip my tea and watch. I'm not going to interrupt unless needed. Mori sits by me after retrieving Hani from the pile. He looks as worn out as the rest of us, but he hides it well. I poured both of us more tea, today's being lemongrass. He accepts. I smile at him and look back at the twins. I feel eyes looking at me. I try to ignore it, probably a fan thinking it's weird for me to be here all the time.
"Don't you guys think that maybe it's time you give up all this fighting?" Tamaki sighs, weaving his hand through his hair. "It's driving me insane."
"What did you say?" Hikaru glares at Tamaki, making the taller boy shrink. "It's driving you insane? You've gotta be kidding me, how do you think I feel right now?"
He wheels around to glare at Kaoru, who throws metaphorical daggers with his eyes.
"Every time I look in the mirror, I see his face. I'm sick and tired of being mistaken for you, Kaoru!" He points dramatically at Kaoru. I take a sip of my tea. "The truth is, I hate your guts!"
I glance at the boys, but continue to drink my tea. The rest of the boys and guests stand frozen, scared for what might happen. I stand up, to argue the point. Afterall, they've been with each other all their lives, and it sounds like only each other. Sure, you can get annoyed, but that goes too far, skit or not! I start to go towards the boys, but a tug at my skirt makes me almost fall over. I grab at the table and look over at the source of the tug; Mori is holding me back.
"Sit," He tries to pull me back in my seat. I stumble a little, but refuse to go down.
"You're okay with him saying that?" I ask, my hands only my hips. "You know it's wrong!"
"Sit, Mitsumi," He replies. "This isn't for you to decide."
I refuse. I stare into his eyes, the onyx glimmering. I cross my arms and look away, the twins still fighting, everyone staring at them.
"Please."
I grab my skirt from him and sit down. I look at Mori once more, who looks a bit pink in the face. I look back over at the group surrounding the twins.
A curse doll has been taken out, and I don't think anyone believes them except for Tamaki, and maybe Hani. Kaoru writes something on the back, making Tamaki shriek. Suddenly, a loud sound makes me jump and clutch at my heart. Haruhi had hit the twins upside the head. I want to giggle at their faces, the dumbfounded look made them look ridiculous.
"Will you guys knock it off?" Haruhi bellows, enraged by their actions. I take a deep breath as I hear her.
"What do you think you're doing?" She rages. "You don't bring something like this into a petty fight!" She brandishes a little doll. It is made of dark wood and hsas a little cat face. It's actually pretty cute.
"Both of you are at fault here, but what's really sad is that you've brought everyone else around you into your big mess. Now, apologize to each other. If you don't make-up right now, I'm never going to let you come over to my house! Have I made myself clear?"
Haruhi crosses her hands over her chest, as if she won the conversation. Her words will be the end of her. I cover my mouth to not giggle, because I can already hear the gears grinding in the twins' heads. Mori looks at me with a raised eyebrow.
"Think about what she just said, the last two sentences," I explained. He muses for a second, before it dawns on him. I can see the shadow of a smile and his eyes twinkle in mischief.
"So then," Hikaru starts. The twins grin, like the little devils they are.
"What you're saying, Haruhi, is that if we can make up we can come over to your place?"
I place my head in my hands so Haruhi can't see me smiling. They are so ridiculous and I feel bad for Haruhi being tricked. She wails in defeat when the doll is turned over to say blank. The twins high five and chuckle at their plan. Then they get into their twincest position that I am not a fan of in the least. I look away, blushing at the strange affection. I look over at Mori.
"Sorry for trying to interfere." He looks at me surprised. I shrug my shoulders and we go back to our tea time. "I know I shouldn't, but they are brothers; unconditional love is difficult to break, and if it's only one fight that breaks it? What will happen to them in the future?"
"You're worried for them."
"Aren't you?"
Mori stares at me, as if he hadn't thought about it. I haven't had many friends throughout the years, but don't you think about their wellbeing? I feel like having to start a club together, there has to be a strong connection between all the guys.
"I'm so glad they made up!" A girl squeals. I smile while reading my book. The boys kept their crazy hair color, but it switched. I may not know much about them, but from what I learned when listening, they are different people. Hikaru is the brash twin, Kaoru is the soft twin. Hikaru is ready for adventure while Kaoru is the cautious voice of reason. Not that I'll ever tell them my reasoning, they might try to mess with me like they messed with Haruhi a few days ago.
"Okay, it's time to play the 'Which one is Hikaru?' game!" Hikaru announces. He and his brother are dramatic as always and do a little twirl with their hair shining in the sunlight.
"I know!" A girl jumps excitedly. "The twin with the pink hair is Hikaru!"
"We have a winner," The boys say at the same time.
No it isn't.
Hikaru has blue hair right now.
"So are you two going to keep your wild hair color even though you've made up?" The girl asks hopefully. I hope not, it's a little too bright. Hair color is fun when it's a color that works for you. Those colors look like a technicolor nightmare. "It's much easier to tell the two of you apart now."
"No, it isn't." I say it automatically, at the same time as Haruhi. She looks at me and smiles.
"You explain Haruhi," I say. "I apologize for trying to talk over you."
I look away from them and continue with my reading.
"Today the pink one is Kaoru and the blue one is Hikaru."
They look at her dumbfounded, and I want to giggle. She walks away to help a customer, the twins still staring at her. Then, Kaoru looks at me. His eyebrows are furrowed.
"How did you know, Mitsumi-Senpai?" Hikaru looks over, as well as the twins' customers. I color at the staring.
"Well, you're two different people," I say, shrugging my shoulders. "Every person has their own personality, and that includes you two."
I close my book and stuff it into my bag.
"I think it's time for me to head home." I smile at the boys and head out of the room. "See you tomorrow."
"We'll walk you out, Mitsu-Chan!" Hani squeals, bounding over to me. He takes my hand lightly and I follow him out of the room. "We don't have any more appointments, so we'd like to, isn't that right Takashi?"
I look over at Mori who is walking beside us.
"Mhm."
I smile at them and listen to Hani as he continues to talk about the latest bakery that popped up in the neighborhood.
"We should all go there together once you're off your diet, how does that sound, Mitsu-Chan?" Hani looks over at me with big, shiny eyes, and I can't help but smile.
"When I'm off it. That sounds like a lovely plan, Hani-Senpai."
I wave goodbye to Hani as he slips into the limo waiting for him. Mori waits with me for my driver to come along, even though I told him he shouldn't have to wait for me. He just stood there, ignoring my protests.
"There's something going on with you, isn't there?" Mori asks, breaking the silence.
"Nothing serious." I fidget with my hands and the cuffs of my dress.
"You are still moving."
"I fidget all the time, Mori-Senpai, don't worry about it." I drop my hands from my cuffs, but they twitch at my sides. We stayed silent for another minute or two. The sun setting makes everything have an orange glow, a tangerine orange that makes everything soft to the eyes. The shadows of the school grow and reach towards us, but the orange wards it off.
"Is it bad that I worry?"
I look up at him, his shadow making it easier for me to see him. He is staring in a different direction than at me. His hands are holding tight to the end of his blazer, the fabric scrunched in his palms.
"Depends on what you worry about." I say lightly.
"What if I worry about you?"
"Then yes, because you don't need to." I hear a sigh from him, but he doesn't shift his gaze to me. I inch close to him, only an arm's length away.
"Hey," I say, grabbing into his arm. He looks over, startled. I smiled at him. "Trust me when I say I'm okay. I have plenty of support, I'm healthy, and there's nothing to worry about any time soon. Okay?"
His face is unreadable. I drop my hand as a limo pulls up, my driver in the seat. I wave and he stops in front of us. I open the door and place my bag in before I get in.
"Mori-Senpai, have you ever worried about yourself before?"
He shakes his head. I smile once more before hopping in.
"Maybe think about yourself before worrying about me or Hani-Senpai. We can handle ourselves."
I wave goodbye and leave him in Ouran's shadow, contemplating my words as the sun continues to set.
"Mitsumi my darling, why must you stay out so late?" My father asks. He was sitting at the table with me tonight, a more indulgent meal plated delicately for us to share. I ate the food with more gusto, I miss eating what I want to eat, rather than sticking with the more healthy diet. It can't hurt to eat deep fried gyoza and tonkatsu bowls once in a while, right?
"I've been with friends, Father," I say, wiping my mouth with my napkin. "Kyoya is in charge of a club at school and I've gotten to know all of them. I'm enjoying my time at school more than I thought I would."
"I'm very relieved to hear that," He sighs. "It'd be quite a shame to be alone at school."
"Would you like me to come home earlier?" I ask.
"No no, you stay as long as you like. As long as Ootori's boy is with you, you are safe and fine."
I relax the tenseness that formed in my shoulders at the answer. To be honest, I would hate to lose time with the club, they are all very nice kids and I want to get to know them more, especially Mori. He's a very kind soul and a good conversationalist once you get him talking. Plus, he seems to have good family values and is very careful around his slightly older cousin. He also has a nice smile, it doesn't appear much, but it's genuine and sweet.
"Mitsumi?" I hear the snapping of fingers and instantly my face goes warm. I shouldn't be thinking about an upperclassman like that, especially one who I'm just beginning a friendship with.
"Yes, Father?"
"What were you thinking about dear, you didn't hear about my latest project."
"Oh, nothing."
"Are you sure?"
"Nothing you have to worry about, Father. I'm just really, really happy."
"That makes me happy to hear, my dear."
I pick up my chopsticks and continue eating, wanting to eat as much indulgent food as I can before more clear broths and egg-based lunches.
