-Sophie woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. She could now finally go to school after hours of sitting in her room, bored, or worse... doing classwork. Sophie didn't like school, but she liked seeing her friends there. Besides, she craved a change of scenery. Though she loved the way her room was decorated, she was tired of looking at it day after day, all day.
Quickly, she got dressed in her red foxfire uniform, and dashed down the stairs, totally not expecting what she would see next. Edaline was beaming and holding a big scroll in her hands with a heart seal on it to keep the scroll from unfurling. "I can't believe it's already here!" Her matchmaker's scroll.
Sophie gasped, "are you serious? Fitz's hasn't even come yet! That's so weird." Frowning, she transmitted her cognate, asking if he had gotten his list yet.
"I'm not kidding, this is a matchmakers scroll. Look at the seal." Edaline handed it to her, practically jumping with excitement.
"Isn't it suppose to have my name on it or something?"
"Maybe they had a style update," her mom offered, clearly just wanting her to open it.
She examined it, "I guess." She would have reacted in a more exaggerated manner if it had not been for the fact that Fitz hadn't responded yet. "Maybe he's busy," she thought, not realizing she was transmitting.
Her cognates voice stumbled into her head. "Wait, wha? Did you transmit something?"
"Yeah, I was wondering about whether or not you got your scroll yet."
"Oh, sorry, I was asleep when you transmitted the first time." Sophie could hear his chuckle in her head. "I don't know yet for sure, but I think so. I can hear Biana squealing all the way downstairs. Why do you ask?"
"I got my scroll too, and I was wondering if you did too."
"Tell me who you got. I'll go see mine soon and report back to you afterwords."
She giggled aloud, and Edaline shook her head with a smile on her face. "Now that you've talked to Fitz, why don't you open it."
Sophie excitedly pealed the scroll open, and unfurled it to see... girls names? She didn't check that option in her application, so was there a mistake? Reading further, she saw at the top, it said: Top Matches For Fitzroy Avery Vacker.
She was so surprised, that she dropped the scroll. How could the matchmakers mix their scrolls up? Was it... was it intentional? Sophie wasn't sure, but she picked up the scroll again.
"What's wrong?" Her mom asked worriedly. "Is Fitz not on your list?"
Blushing deeply, she replied, "it's not that, it's just not my list." She passed it to her.
"What do you mean? It has to be your list." Edaline frowned, and her eyes widened. "You're right! It is his list-and you're at the top!"
Time seemed to slow down. It took a second for Sophie to process what was happening. "Wait, what? You can't be serious." She could hear the sound of her heart beating in her ears. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be happening. Sure, she had expected to be on his list, because they were cognates after all, but not his number one.
Wait- would he be upset that she opened his list? Sophie knew for a fact that he wouldn't bat an eye at it, but still, a small little fear started to bloom in the back of her mind, and slowly began to grow. Fitz would never be mad at her, she couldn't have known. Suddenly, she thought back to the time when Alden's mind broke, and her cognate was so mad at her, that he wouldn't talk to her. Her mind started going down that path when she was interupted by Edaline.
"I wonder if he's as high up on your list as well." Wondered Edaline wistfully, rolling the list back up and handing the list back to her.
"I have to get it back to him. Maybe he has mine." Sophie ran to the leapmaster, hopped on, and yelled, "Everglen!"
When she arrived at the gates, she knocked on the solid metal as loudly as she could. Alden was there to let her in, but was very confused. "Sophie, is something wrong?" He looked down at the scroll in her hand before leading her up to the house. "Scroll emergencies? I'll bring you to Biana-"
She cut him off. "-no. I need to see Fitz. This isn't my scroll."
"Then who's scroll is it?"
"Fitz's. I think the matchmakers switched ours by accident."
"Let me see," he asked, and she handed him the scroll. Alden peeked at the top before rolling it back up.
"Oh my..." Alden's eyes were wide. "To the dining room!"
They ran down the hall together, and they passed by Biana on the way, who was also very confused. They burst into the dining room to see Fitz sitting at the table, his spoon halfway to his mouth. When his eyes met hers, he jumped out of his chair. "What happened? Something happened. Is everything okay?"
Sophie held up the scroll, her face red from the run and the embarrassment. "I have your scroll. It came to my house instead of yours, and I think you might have mine."
"How could that have happened? They're suppose to be really ontop of things." He frowned.
"I know, right?" Sophie walked across the room to him and handed him his scroll. "I'm sorry I opened it, it doesn't have a name on the outside, so I thought it was mine."
"Hey, no worries, I would have done the same thing. Besides, we're cognates, so you have just as much of a right to see my list as I do." He smiled, and opened it up.
Sophie watched as he scanned the list briefly, making his way to the top. She pulled out an eyelash nervously, and watched as he read the top line. His number one. Sophie Elizabeth Foster. He gasped a little, laughing, "so you're my number one! I wonder where I am on your list..."
"I bet mine doesn't have a name on it either, so they were mixed up."
"Oh, right! Let me go get the scroll that isn't Biana's." Fitz left the room for a moment, before coming back in, smiling. "Here you go. I hope it's the right one."
"Me too," she smiled nerviously and opened the scroll. Unrolling it all the way, with Fitz peeking over her shoulder, she read the top of the scroll. Top Matches For Sophie Elizabeth Foster. It was her list after all! Before she started looking to see who was on it, Fitz put his finger over the first one, beaming.
"I found my name."
Carefully, she moved his finger to the side to see that his name was indeed on her list. At the top. Her number one. Sophie almost dropped the scroll in suprise, feeling like deja vu just hit her in the stomach. "Isn't that really rare?"
"Isn't what really rare?" Alden asked, joining them. When he saw, he smiled, and clapped the two cognates on the back. "That's fantastic! Congratulations, you two."
"What's going on?" Biana asked, walking in, a huge smile on her face. It was like she could sense what was going on.
"Um... Sophie and I..." Fitz started awkwardly, adorning the same shade of red Sophie was.
"Are each other's number ones!" Alden finished excitedly.
"No WAY!" Biana threw herself at the two cognates for a hug. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! This is so great! I have to call Dex, he owes me a necklace!"
"Why would he owe you a necklace?" Sophie asked, trying to change the topic.
"We made a bet on whether or not you'll be eachother's number ones. He said that it was too rare, but I told him that you two were special, so it could happen. So, he said if I was right, he'd make me a necklace, and I said if he was right, I'd babysit the triplets for the next month."
"You really risked a lot," Fitz chuckled. Sophie smiled at him, thinking about how much he sounded like Alden.
"Not really, I like the triplets. They listen to me, but I don't know why." Biana giggled.
"It's because you're nice and pretty," Sophie explained, and Biana hugged her.
"Thank you! That's so sweet."
"No, it's honest." She hugged back, "now why don't we all go to school so you can tell Dex about that necklace promise."
"Sounds good! Let's go!"
And off they went to school.
