nineteen
+Biana was sitting in her room, leafing through the latest issue of Elvin Magazine when her transmitter went off. She frowned, and picked it up to see the name Keefe Sencen flash onto the screen. "That's odd," she thought. "Why would he call me instead of Fitz?" She clicked it open to see her crush's face materialize onto the screen. His eyes were red, and his hair was messier than fashionable. Something was wrong.
"Sorry to bother you, but I-" he started, but she cut him off.
"Keefe, what's wrong? Did you encounter the Neverseen or something? You look terrible."
"Thanks, but no, no I didn't."
Embarrassed, she quickly apologized, but he only waved her off before falling silent.
"So..." she started, hoping he wouldn't shut her down. "What's the matter?"
"It's just... Sophie and Fitz. They're always together doing together-y stuff and-"
"Together-y stuff?" She giggled, an eyebrow raised in question.
"Yes," he smiled a bit before continuing. "It's just hard to see them together like that. Especially because Fitz is my best friend."
Frowning, she asked, "what do you mean?" Though she feared she knew what he was going to say.
Keefe looked around briefly before leaning closer to his imparter, "promise you won't tell anyone?"
Biana nodded, tears starting to gather in her eyes, "promise."
He took a deep breath, "I like Sophie. I've liked her since the day we met, and I think I might even love her, but she likes Fitz." There was a pause before he continued. "It just hurts to see them stare at one another, having a conversation no one else can hear, or when they hold hands under the table, totally at random, for no reason at all."
"They what? I thought they were too awkward for that!" Biana exclaimed, proud of her best friend for taking such a big step, even if she didn't tell her. There must have been a good reason they kept it a secret if they were holding handsd under the table.
"I know, right? It's almost like they're together." Realization hit her crush in the face, "they aren't together... are they?"
She was tempted to say yes, so that maybe Keefe's crush on Sophie would go away, so that maybe he'd fall for her instead, but that would be selfish. He deserved to know the truth. The tears in her eyes started to sting as she gave him a small smile. "No, they're not, but there is a chance they will be."
"What do you mean?"
It was Biana's turn to look around before leaning in closer, "Don't tell Fitz I told you this, but he recently realized that he likes her."
Keefe's eyes widened in fear, "oh man, I'm done for, aren't I?"
"I don't know, maybe there's still hope. You still have time." She offered, even though her heart ached more with every word from her mouth.
He seemed to relax a little, and he smiled. "Yeah, maybe you're right. I better turn on the Keefe charm tomorrow! Thanks, Biana!"
"Anytime," she replied, but he didn't seem to notice as he was turned away from the camera, listening to someone talk in the distence.
"Thanks for listening, I have to go. See you tomorrow!" Her crush winked and waved goobye before their call ended.
Biana sighed, almost wishing she hadn't been honest. She wanted to curl up in bed and cry, but she didn't want to scare her parents if they came in or saw her eyes red at dinner. Instead, she tried a different method. She grabbed her sketchbook and shoved it in her favorite tote bag with some colored pencils before heading out the door, heading to the leapmaster.
She walked by her mom, and as she did, she called over her shoulder. "Mom, I'm going out for inspiration, I'll be back by dinner."
She didn't really hear her reply as she stood on the platform of the leapmaster. "Mysterium!"
Biana liked to go out into cities to see what they were wearing for inspiration, but Mysterium, the "working class" city, was her favorite. She liked to see everyone bustling about, working hard. It seemed more realistic, more natural than the confident big-headed strides citizens made in Eternalia.
When she arrived at the gates, she smiled a little, and followed the crowd of people in. She went with the flow into the square where street venders sold anything from jewelry to bookmarks. The cobble stone streets were as muddy as the colors of the buildings, but the colors from elves passing by made it all seem brighter. There was a huge fountain with statues of famous elves who invented or did amazing things, and most people walked away from it. There were some people who were visiting, who sat on the edge, chatting happily with their friends, or people who happened to stop by. Biana found a spot away from everyone else, and sat down, pulling out her sketchbook.
She leaned against the feet of the statue of her ancestor, Orem Vacker, and pulled her knees in, begining to study the people passing by. A flutter of a cape. The clanking of metal in pockets. The soft clomping of work boots. Inspiration had struck.
Immediately, she bent her head down and started to sketch designs. Maybe this would turn in to a collection. Maybe she would submit this into the Bedovanna Boutique contest. She wasn't sure. She knew that she wanted to make a submission, but she didn't know what to submit.
The Bedovanna Boutique contest took place once a year where aspiring fashion designers submit a collection of their own creation to the Bedovanna Boutique, and the winner's collection would be specially sold by the famous boutique! Many celebrities as well as female councillors were known to shop there, and usually bought pieces of the winning collection. Biana had entered before, but she had never won. Last year's collection she had sent in couldn't even compare with the winner's. Last year, the theme had been practical day wear, which is the opposite of this year's theme: evening wear.
Evening wear was special. Elegant, fancy, and bold. It was the most sophisticated and expensive of all clothing. However, it is rarely worn by the everyday elf, at least in the beginning. This year, in the first week of sales, the collection will only be open to celebrities, who will basically set the trend of the success of your collection for the rest of the year. Essentially, a pretty big deal. She worked hard at sketching and coloring the designs, that she didn't notice someone sit next to her.
She only stopped sketching when she felt a something jump into her lap. She gasped as it hugged her, and they would have toppled backwards into the pool of it had not been for Dex. He caught her with one arm, and helped pulled Bex off her lap with the other.
"Sorry Biana, you're kind of her hero." He smiled sheepishly at her before looking down at his little sister. "Bex, you can't just tackle hug people like that. You both could've gotten hurt."
"Or worse, soaked!" Biana smiled as she put her sketchbook away. "Next time, just wait until I've got my sketch book up, then we can fall into the fountain together, okay?"
Bex laughed, breaking free of her brother's grip, and Biana welcomed her over with a hug.
Dex sighed, a small smile on his face, before turning his attention back to her. "Why are you out here? It's close to dinner time, and the traffic out here is miserable at this time."
"Just looking for some inspiration," she replied. "I assume you're helping at Slurps and Burps?"
He nodded, "yeah, I was just about to take the triplets home. Lex and Rex are still inside the shop. This little rascal followed me out," he ruffled his sister's hair affectionately.
"Hey!" Bex pouted, "you can't keep her all to yourself!"
"Tsk tsk," Biana gave Dex a wink.
"Yeah, it would be a shame, huh? Well it would be an even bigger shame if Lex and Rex are all of the custard bursts Edaline sent over..." he looked to the side comically, but still, Bex fell for it. She dashed off back to the shop, while Dex and Biana turned away.
"So are you submitting a collection into the Bedovanna contest?" He put his hands in his pockets.
Biana's eyes widened, surprised that he remembered. "How did you know?"
His freckles faded against the redness of his cheeks. "Well... um... you submitted one last year, right?"
She nodded.
"My dad's cousin works at Bedovanna and showed us some of the designs he liked. One of the dresses you did was one of them."
It was Biana's turn to blush now, "really? Which one?"
"The polka dot one, it was really good."
They smiled at one another for a moment, and she couldn't seem to keep her eyes off his. They were the color of the periwinkles that grew outside of her window. Weird.
They only looked away when they saw Kesler, Dex's dad, running out of the shop with wild eyes. "Dex, Biana! Is Bex with you?"
Biana frowned, starting to get worried. "No, she went back to the shop, why? Is she not there?"
"No! We've looked everywhere. Did she say anything to hint that she was going to run away?"
Dex started to pale, he shook his head, "no, she seemed excited to go back to the shop to see Rex and Lex."
"So does that mean she was-" Kesler started, getting that same panic Dex had in his eyes.
"I hope not. Let's call Fitz, maybe he can help." She picked up her imparter with a slight tremble in her fingers, and called her brother.
Biana was a little surprised when Sophie's face appeared on the screen instead. "Biana, what's wrong?"
"Bex Diznee has been kidnapped."
