eight
+Biana was just sitting in her room after dinner, trying to finish her homework and help Keefe out while he was freaking out over Sophie, when her older brother, Fitz, walked in, and plopped down in her desk chair, his head in his hands. She closed her imparter quickly. "What's-" she was about to ask him what was wrong until he interrupted her.
"Sophie doesn't like me."
"What?" She was very confused. Sophie had told her-multiple times-that she liked Fitz, and she was fairly sure that nothing had changed.
Fitz reiterated, "She said that she doesn't like anyone."
"In what context?"
"I asked her."
She was getting frustrated at his short, meaningless answers. "Oh my gosh, it's like I have to dissect the information out of your head! What happened before that?"
"I was asking why Marella was acting so weird around me today, and she said that she liked me, then asked if I liked anyone." Fitz rubbing his neck, stressed.
"Fitz." She closed her eyes, she didn't have time for this melodrama.
"Yes?"
"She likes you."
"But she said-"
Biana cut him off, "I know what she said, but she didn't mean it. She was just scared that you don't like her back, that's all."
"How can you be so sure that she likes me?"
"She's been telling me she does for the past, I don't know, FOUR YEARS."
"That's how long I've known her."
"Exactly!"
She put her face in her hands in misery as realization dawned on her oblivious brother.
"She has liked me that long?"
Biana wanted to scream. "I'm sorry, but can I finish my homework now?"
"Homework?"
"Multispecial studies."
"Oh okay, sorry to interupt, but thanks!" Smiling, Fitz left, a little hop in his step, closing the door behind him.
She sat up with a sigh, smiling a little, and opened her imparter. 'I'm sorry', she typed, 'Fitz needed advice.'
'It's no problem, I was scared you had just left, but I understand why you had to do it.' Keefe replied, and she smiled. Even if he liked her best friend, Keefe always seemed to make Biana's heart skip a beat.
'So what do you plan to do about Sophie and Fitz?'
'I... I don't know. I was thinking about confessing to her, but I don't know if that's such a good idea. They're happy together... or... in cognitively or whatever. I don't want to mess that up.'
'Maybe you should confess anyways to, you know, get it off your chest?' Biana knew for a fact that Sophie would turn him down. She liked Fitz way too much, and respected Biana's crush on Keefe.
Honestly, she could almost hear Keefe sigh disappointedly across the TIM, aka, typed imparter message. 'I can't, I don't think I can stand being rejected by her. I don't think I can let my image of her be ruined.'
'You could write a note to her."
'She'd just show it to Fitz, and he might go all hulk-protective of me, keeping me from seeing her ever again.' This was true.
'She's a telepath with a photographic memory, she'll just show him the memory of you confessing anyways.'
'Maybe I should just, you know, not confess?' Keefe suggested.
'No, you need to, you know you do.'
'Remind me why I need to confess again?'
Biana got nervous. She knew his answer could make or break her heart a little more. 'So you can move on?'
'What if I don't want to yet?'
'Sophie and Fitz are only going to grow closer, do you really want to be in love with her to see that?'
Biana didn't get a reply from him for a full minute.
Finally, he did, and she smiled. 'Okay, I'll do it.'
"Yes, yes!" She thought joyously, "he might be mine! He might be mine!" Quickly, she typed back a response, 'Good, trust me, you'll feel better afterwards.'
'I hope you're right. I'll tell you how it goes tomorrow.'
'Okay, good luck.'
She watched the screen anxiously for a few minutes, waiting for just one more message, but it didn't come. She sighed as she clicked off her imparter, and laid back onto her mattress, staring up at the ceiling. She stayed that way for a long time, not moving, barely breathing. Thoughts of Keefe ran through her head like a stream from a dam. Quiet, smooth, and even. She thought about how he use to laugh more, smile more, joke more, just... live more. She thought about how sad he was, and how he looked so stressed nowadays. Then she thought about how he was in love with Sophie, and how she herself loved him... Biana's breath hitched, and the dam broke.
She bolted upright, and clutched a pillow to her chest, tears keeping time with her thoughts. She worked so hard to love people and take care of them, but at the end of the day, who would take care of her? Why didn't people take care of her? Did they not think she was special, or at least good enough? Why didn't anyone see how sad she was? She thought that she gave off signs, right? Why couldn't she be loved back, or love someone who did love her back?
Biana laid back down, and turned on her side, facing her imparter. She cried harder, sobbing silently, because though she may have wanted to make a sound, she couldn't. She didn't know how much time had passed before she closed her eyes. The next time she opened them, it was morning, and light shone from her closed imparter. She had a message.
Slowly, she fumbled it open, to see a TIM from Dex. It asked her to come over and help with the triplets. He explained that his mom was going to be gone all day to help her friend redecorate her house, and that his dad was working on a super flammable elixer, so he needed the triplets to be well under wraps. She was about to reply back with a yes, but he messaged her again.
"Not to sweeten the deal or anything, but Bex made a human recipe called 'apple pie' and it's incredible."
"Really?" she TIMed back, "I better get over there quick, huh?"
"Yeah, and not because I totally accidentally promised you'd come if if they behaved."
Biana laughed to herself quietly, before responding, "I'll be there in twenty."
"THANK YOU!" Dex TIMed back, and she could have sworn that he was smiling too.
In a good mood, she rolled out of bed and made her way to her walk in closet. She grabbed her favorite mint colored empire waist sun dress and under things before making her way to her shower. She finished in about ten minutes, and completed her make up, hair, and accessory choice in five. It may seem shocking, but Biana was very picky of what accessories she wore with her outfits, and new what she wanted mostly right on the spot, because she usually planned them out ahead of time. For example, if she really wanted to wear a yellow tunic, she would usually wear a silver piece of jewelry with it. If she wore black pants with that outfit, and she wanted to wear a sweater, it would have to be grey to make the black less intense. If she wore heels with that, they'd probably have to be a warm color (red-purple, red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow) to balance out the neutral colors, unless she wanted to wear flats, then she'd enhance the neutral colors with her brown flats, but wear her hair up with warm colored barrettes, ponytail holders, ribbons, scrunchies, headbands, or something of the hair care sort, depending on the weather. DON'T even get her started on how the weather affects everything!
She chose a cobalt blue clip to hold all of her hair back, and slid on black flats. Her makeup was a simple light purple shimmer eyeshadow that was almost closer to a grey than a purple (ALMOST being the key word), brown eyeliner, black mascara, and her new Lavish Lavender Lipstick. When she was satisfied, she raced downstairs quickly after putting on her big gold hoop earrings, her silver and mother of pearl necklace. She grabbed a yendral berry scone as soon as she entered the kitchen. With roughly five minutes left, she asked one of the gnomes to go fetch her her 'triplet box' that she always brought when going to take care of Bex, Rex, and Lex. Biana was going to go tell one of her parents or Fitz when she had run out of time. Hastily, she wrote them a note, yelling it as she put it on paper, just in case, and left it on the counter. Grabbing the 'triplet box' she dashed to the leapmaster, and traveled to Dex's house.
When she stepped off the leapmaster, she walked down the hall as quietly as she could towards the living room, the closest room to the entrance. She could hear Bex, Lex, and Rex gathered there, having a conversation.
Biana stood against the wall and watched for a moment. The triplets were sitting on the floor in a circle around a little kitchen timer, while Dex lounged in an arm chair. Bex, Lex, and Dex were each wearing a feathered boa.
"She should be here any second now!" Lex squealed excitedly.
"Thirty-three seconds to be exact." Rex announced.
"Do you think she'll be here exactly when the timer goes off?" Bex asked.
Dex replied with a chuckle, "I don't know, maybe. She's very punctual."
"You're just saying that because you think she's cute." Rex rolled his eyes.
"Hey that's-" Dex blushed, and so did she, even though she wasn't in the room let, let alone part of the conversation! Lex stood up, trying to calm his sibling with gentle waving gestures.
"Okay, okay, it's a common fact that Biana IS cute, so everyone thinks it. What's the big deal?"
"I don't know, but maybe if you guys count down the seconds until she gets here, she'll magically appear at the door." Dex suggested, glancing up at her with wink. "Unison might make her more willing to be here EXACTLY when the timer goes off.
"Oh boy!" Bex smiled, "Ready?"
Biana took a couple steps back to make it more realistic.
In unison, the triplets chanted, "Five... four... three... two... one!"
After they said 'one', Biana walked into the room, exactly on time with the timer. The three gasped and looked at one another with wonder for a moment. Lex and Bex then ran over, tackling her with a hug. Rex followed close behind, but had decreed that he was 'too cool for hugs' a while back. He claimed that it 'messed with his lady mojo'. Dex had explained afterwards that Rex was into human movies, like their mom, and that he should probably work to keep them away from his brother.
"Hey guys!" She hugged the two (once) little kids back, smiling like she hadn't cried the night before.
"You look FABULOUS!" Bex complimented.
"Thank you," giggled Biana, "so do you two. Feather boas are very in right now."
"I know, right? Even Lex will wore one!"
"They're so soft!" Lex pet his orange boa happily.
"They are," she agreed, "I personally like black ones."
"Because they match everything?" Bex asked like a good unofficial prodigy.
"Exactly!"
"I like pink, Lex likes orange, Dex will wear any color I give him, but Rex won't wear his!" Bex complained and crossed her arms, pouting.
"Feathered boas aren't for everyone," Biana reminded her. "Now speaking of you, Rex, how's my little man?" She held her hand out for their secret handshake.
Rex frowned, "why am I your little man? I'm thirteen!" Nevertheless, he did their secret handshake with her. As your loving author, I would describe it, but it is a SECRET handshake, so you'd have to ask Rex himself if he would share that level of information with you, the readers of this fanfiction.
"Because you've always been my little man. Just like Bex has always been my little unicorn, and Lex has always been my little prince."
"But we're bigger now!" Rex defended.
"Mhm, you'll be littler than me until you can catch up in age!" She laughed.
"Hey! No fair!" He whined, and she only laughed more.
"Hey Bee," Dex smiled, calling her a new nickname, and got up.
"Bee? You've never called me Bee before." Biana raised an eyebrow at him playfully.
"I-uh-yeah, um, I'm-" He stumbled, his ears and nose bright red. She giggled at his odd blush.
"No, it's okay, I like it."
"OOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Bex teased.
"Point Dex." Rex smiled dryly.
"Oh hey! What do you have planned for your Winnowing Gala?" asked Bex excitedly.
"You'll just have to come and see!" Biana winked.
"No way!" The younger girl gasped.
"Can we come too?" Lex asked.
Rex asked another question. "Can I have your first dance?"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Rex. It's tradition to dance with her number one first." Dex shut the idea down quickly, "and second dance is with her father, third with Fitz."
"I'll make sure to save you each dance," she promised, blushing and giggling. The triplets always made her feel appreciated. Actually, all the Diznee kids did. It was nice.
"I call the dance after Fitz!" Rex called out.
"Hey, no fair!" Bex argued, while Lex just kind of hugged Biana quietly as his siblings argued.
"Don't fight, guys! How about this, why don't we play a game, and whoever wins will get the fourth dance." Biana promised, smiling.
"You don't have to do that, it's your Gala," Dex tried to reason with her, but she shook her head.
"Of course I do! I really want to dance with my favorite triplets in the entire world."
Lex changed the conversation, "What about the fifth and sixth dance?"
"We can either play two more rounds, or whoever wins second and third place in the first game, whatever we feel like." she offered.
"But what if you win?" Rex asked.
"Then we play again."
"What if DEX wins?" Bex smiled smugly, like she had just won something.
"Then I dance with Dex.
"Awesome! Let's play Jenga!" Rex smiled, "You get to destroy stuff!"
"No way! Let's play Monopoly!" Lex suggested.
"That takes WAY too long, why do you like that game anyways?"
"I like the little houses!"
"How about we just play Uno?" Dex suggested, and all of the triplets glared at him.
Biana was confused, she didn't know any of these human games. "What's so bad about Uno?"
"It's the most awful home-wrecking game of all time!" Bex exclaimed dramatically, flopping backwards onto the couch.
"Aside from Monopoly that is." Rex agreed. "Monopoly is the worst of the worst."
"What about Go Fish?" Dex suggested, and his siblings frowned.
"That's way too easy, the only thing good about that game is the fish on the cards!" Lex crossed his arms, pouting.
"I have to agree with Lex on that one," Rex admitted.
"Let's just play Candy Land." Bex decided, and everyone agreed.
The Diznees helped her along the way, starting off with at least one of the triplets shouting something, then Dex calmly going back and explaining what they meant. They all had a good time, especially Lex, because he just loved the art on the cards. They played a few more times until it was determined that Lex would get her fourth dance, Rex her fifth, and Bex her sixth. It was cute really, to see how they fought over her.
When they finished playing, they decided to watch a movie. Biana and the triplets made their way to the television room while Dex got snacks. She had offered to help him, but he insisted that she would be a better help leading the triplets away from the kitchen. The room only had one small couch, a DVD case, and a small bookshelf, holding a DVD/VHS player and the television. She sat down in the middle, with Lex and Bex on either side. Rex sat on the armrest after he set the movie up because he claimed he was "rebellious", but Biana figured it was because there was no more room left on the couch. So basically, from left to right, it went Bex, Biana, Lex, Rex.
When Dex came in with a bowl of popped Keldamae, he handed the bowl of popcorn to Bex, and started to sit on the floor.
"No, take my seat!" Lex sprang up. "I'll sit on the floor."
"Or you could sit on my lap," Dex suggested, ruffling his hair.
"Okay!" Lex climbed into his older brother's lap. So then it became Bex, Biana, Lex & Dex, then Rex. They watched the movie calmly, Lex and Bex leaning against her shoulders, while Rex leaned on Dex.
When it finished, the all of the triplets but Dex and Lex were asleep, though they were pretty close to joining their siblings. Biana smiled, and laughed softly to herself. Bex was halfway into her lap, Lex was leaning into her shoulder, Dex was laying against Lex's arm, and Rex was falling off the armrest into Dex, snoring, his face in the cushion by his brother's leg, and his own legs straight up in the air.
Biana thought about the time she had spent crying last night, and how she had felt so miserable, but now... She felt the complete opposite. She felt wanted, she felt loved. It was nice. She felt nice. She closed her eyes, smiling, and took a deep breath, trying to capture this moment in her memory as best she could. A good memory, hopefully to outshine a bad.
It was ruined when her imparter went off. Carefully, trying not to disturb the sleepy Diznees, she pulled it out of her pocket, and silenced it swiftly, trying to keep the brightness out of their eyes in the process. It was a message from her father, telling her that it was time to come home for dinner. She sighed a little, and slid it back into her pocket.
"Hey, Dex?" she whispered softly, trying to not disturb Lex or Bex as she turned her head to face him.
"Mhmgh?" Dex's eyes didn't open.
"I have to go, Dad wants me home for dinner."
"Okay," he took a deep breath before cautiously opening his eyes slightly, squinting at the light. "I'll see you out."
"No, it's okay, you stay put. Thank you so much for having me over. I had a lot of fun."
"You should come over more often then." He smiled at her.
"Definitely." She smiled back. She held his gaze for a moment too long, and looked away, flushing. "Yeah, well, uh, I'll see you at school. I can't come tomorrow because the girls and I are going out to get Winnowing Gala dresses."
Dex yawned, "sounds good. See you then." He closed his eyes again, and she giggled a bit.
As cautiously as she could, she moved Lex's head off her shoulder, and slid out from under Bex. She was about to walk out when she noticed a blanket sitting on the back of the sofa. Gently, she unfolded it, and draped it over the Diznees. Satisfied, she walked to the leapmaster and leaped home very glad that she had come. Blushing softly, she wondered how she and Dex would talk at school after this, after being together so close for so long... NO- she liked Keefe, her number one. One day, he would fall in love with her, and they'd have a happily ever after, just like in the human stories, right?
