Chapter 39

"You have never eaten at a hot dog stand?" Andy teased after we had ordered hot dogs at this one stand in the park in New York.

It was our last day in New York before going back to reality. Andy had some gigs at the Fairmont coming up after we got back home. He really was back on his feet solid. He was also in talks with Barry about new material and songs to work on as well.

"No, I've never eaten at one. I guess I've never had the chance to try 'em back home," I told Andy.

The hot dog stand owner laughed as he handed Andy the first one.

Violet and Grandma had found a food truck a few steps over and ordered some kind of box of food.

We waited for the second one which was mine. I wanted the hot dog with all the works including onions and relish.

The hot dog stand owner finished up and gave us the last one. He also gave us napkins.

We went to join Violet and Grandma at a table they found.

I looked at Violet's box of food. It was cheese fries with bacon. Grandma had gotten the same thing.

"You guys got hot dogs instead of these?" Violet asked as she chewed.

I chuckled as I sat down.

"Well she's never had a hot dog from a stand before so I thought New York was a perfect place for her to try it," Andy commented.

Violet laughed. So did Grandma.

"A hot dog is a hot dog, isn't it?" Grandma asked me.

I shook my head.

"You can tell which hot dogs are really good quality brand name-wise and off-brand name-wise," I commented as I took a bite of the hot dog.

And the first bite was the best.

Andy watched me for my reaction.

"So?" he asked.

"It hits the spot," I commented after I finished chewing.

He laughed.

"I'm glad darling," he told me.

We sat and enjoyed the nice New York weather and food.

After snacking in the park, we walked around and window-shopped.  I also took photos of Andy, Violet, and Grandma periodically. I also took pictures of the buildings and such. I couldn't wait to see how the pictures came out of the trip. I kept my camera around my neck.

We walked right by Tiffany's and Violet and I stopped to look in the window.

There was a silver charm bracelet that caught my eye. But I couldn't afford it right now with the holidays and bills that would come up.

"Oh that's so pretty," I pointed to the bracelet.

"What is?" Andy asked as he stood behind me to see what I was talking about.

"That bracelet but it's over 100 dollars and I don't really need it. I always wanted a Tiffany bracelet since I was little," I remarked as we continued walking.

"It is pretty," Andy commented.

Violet and I went into Bloomingdale's to browse. We had never stepped into one before.

"Where did Andy go?" Grandma asked me.

"Huh? He was right behind me," I told her.

"The gentleman that was with you? He disappeared back out the door," the clerk told me.

I furrowed my eyebrows and looked out the door.

Andy was nowhere in sight.

"Okay weird," I mumbled as Violet and I saw a sales rack with clearance.

Grandma Mary found some cute shoes and went and paid for them right away.

Violet and I neither found anything.

"Okay girls on to the next store," Grandma commented.

We walked out and I saw Andy walking towards us.

He caught up to where we were.

"Where did you go?" I asked him.

"Oh, I had to find a bathroom. The hot dog didn't sit with me well," Andy explained.

"Uhm oh," I remarked.

"Yeah," Andy commented.

I didn't ask him anymore. I just hoped the hot dog wouldn't make me sick.

We walked hand in hand as we walked the streets of New York. It was hard to believe I was with my best friend and my boyfriend thousands of miles away.

"Any more stores?" Grandma Mary asked as we paused at the crosswalk waiting for our turn.

"No, I don't think so Grandma," Violet commented.

Violet looked at me and Andy.

"No, we are good. I think we should head back to the hotel so we can pack things up and be ready to fly out in the morning," I told them.

"Sounds like a good plan," Andy told me.

So, we all walked across the street and then hailed two cabs to take us to the hotel.

That was one thing I disliked about New York was it was a fight of flights to get places.

We were back at the hotel within 15 minutes. Us in one cab and Violet and Grandma in another.

It was a little after 2. Our flights were at 7:30. So, we needed to be up bright eyed and bushy tail at  5 to get to the airport by 7.

"For dinner what are you guys gonna do?" Violet asked as we walked to the elevator.

"I was thinking we can get some pizza down the street. It's like a block from here," I commented as I looked at Andy.

He was a million miles away.

"Andy?" I asked him.

"Huh?" he commented.

"Violet asked what we were doing for dinner and I suggested pizza from the pub down the street. Are you good with that?" I asked him as the elevator doors opened.

"Oh yeah that's fine darling," he commented.

"So pizza it is," I told her.

"We can go and get it if you want?" Violet asked as we piled into the elevator.

"Yeah we can enjoy a hot girl walk," I joked.

"A hot girl walk?" Grandma Mary asked chuckling.

Andy just laughed.

"Yeah two hot girls on a walk, duh," I remarked.

Violet giggled.

"She's too much," Violet commented as the elevator got to our floor.

And so, we went our separate ways into our rooms.

I went to wash up and Andy did the same.

"Today's been pretty perfect," I remarked as I took the camera off around my neck.

"How many photos have you taken?" Andy asked me curiously as we both sat down on the bed.

"Probably at least 30. This roll of film has 2 left," I told him.

"Wow you are like a professional photographer now," Andy teased.

"Shush," I told him.

He cleared his throat.

"Well darling uhm," he commented.

"What?" I asked him.

"Well, remember when we were walking earlier and you really liked something in one of the windows?" he asked me as he looked at me.

"Yeah, why?" I asked him curiously.

"Uhm, well," he commented as he took a blue Tiffany's box out of the pocket of his shirt.

"Andrew you didn't," I commented shocked.

"I saw how your eyes lit up and when you said you've wanted a bracelet from Tiffany's since you were little," he expressed as he opened the box to reveal the same bracelet I saw earlier in the day.

My eyes watered up.

"Andrew," I kept saying as he took it out of the box to put on my wrist.

"I love you and I want you to have the things you never got in life," he told me.

I looked at my wrist and it glistened so perfectly on me.

"Andy," I remarked as I leaned over to wrap him in a hug.

I kissed him. My tears were just streaming down my face. They were happy ones.

"Why are you crying?" he asked me chuckling.

"Because, this, this means so much to me and you shouldn't have. But I am so grateful and thankful," I told him as I kissed his cheek.

He smiled at me.

"See the hot dog really didn't make me sick," he commented.

"Oh thank god. I got so scared because of the flight tomorrow," I commented chuckling.

"Oh my god darling no it was a cover-up for the bracelet," he told me as he swiped his thumb over my cheeks to dry the tears.

A surprise that I'd forever be thankful for.
