Chapter Eighteen
John Pov
My backpack slid off my shoulders and plopped on the floor. "How'd the pep rally at school go?" Martha asked.
"It went well. Better than I thought it would. How was your day?" I asked, sitting next to her.
"Well I woke up at ten and dad helped me with math." She said.
"Lucky." I muttered.
"Yeah. Why don't you do online school?" She asked.
"Because dad thinks I'm socially awkward and I need friends." I told her, turning on the Tv.
"Has he ever said that?" Martha asked.
"No but I can tell he's thinking it. Besides, if I did online school I never would've met Alex." I said.
"We should watch Shameless." She commented.
"Isn't that like Malcolm in the Middle but rated R?" I asked.
"Pretty much." She replied.
"Alright." I muttered.
Alex sat down next to me. "Want-talk? Let's-to-room." He said.
I raised an eyebrow and stood up. "Where are you goin' John?" Martha asked.
"To my room...I think." I said, muttering the last part.
I walked up stairs with Alex. I went into my room and sat down on my bed. "Why did you need to talk to me so urgently?" I asked.
"I wanted- thank you-what you- today." He replied. I decoded his words easily and said, "You're welcome. I'm just spreading your legacy."
He smiled.
Alex got up and walked to my closet and said, "Open it."
I looked at him confused but got up and opened the closet. He pointed to a box. I glanced at him confused.
"What is this?" I asked.
"You'll see." He replied.
I picked up the box and took it back to my bed. I opened it and saw his old Walkman, a few mixtapes, some pictures and a video camera.
"I was-to give-to you-your birthday." He said sitting next to me.
"So you kept it in my room?" I asked. "You never wou- check there." He said his voice going in and out.
"True." I mumbled.
"Could I play the mixtape at the big thing the sisters and I set up?" I asked.
"I was hoping." He replied.
I took the video camera out of the box and turned it on.
The first thing that came on was Alex drunkenly shouting at the sky, "I FUCKING CHALLENGE THE GODS! FIGGHTTT ME!"
Then I heard my laughter behind the camera. I remember this.
His cousin forgot to lock the liquor cabinet and well...one thing led to another.
Alex did a backflip and flipped off the sky.
Then it started to rain.
I snickered.
I remember that.
We were stupid little sophomores. Alex smiled. I wanted to hug him so badly. I sniffled and went to the next video.
It started out with me whispering to the camera, "Okay...Alex is in the bathroom and Imma jump out and scare him."
Holy fuck the cringe.
I looked around twelve?
Thirteen-ish?
I'm not sure but one thing was for sure. My voice hadn't dropped yet.
Alex snickered beside me.
Young me scurried under Alex's bed with the camera focused on the door. Alex walked in adjusting his belt and then I yelled, "BOO!"
And Alex yelped and stumbled back and fell over. Young me laughed hysterically.
"The cringe is killing me." I muttered. "Same." Alex mumbled.
"Can I also show this at the thing?" "Sure. Jus- leave out the weird- please?" He asked.
"Bruh all of them are weird."
"Thats fair."
