We often hear about physical abuse. But many people does not know that they are experiencing Emotional Abuse or psychological abuse . In many cases emotional abuse can be more harmful than physical abuse.
One definition of emotional abuse is: "any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth." (Source: https://www.healthyplace.com)
Verbal abuse is another form of Emotional abuse.
Like name calling, shaming, blaming, criticism are some verbal abuses which can affect the victim emotionally.
Teen, Children or Adults anyone can experience Emotional abuse.
Emotional abuse does not often leave the victims with physical scars but it has a long term severe effects.
Those effects include:
1.Changes in actions or behaviour
2. Low self-esteem
3.Anxiety or fear
4.Depression
5. Suicidal thoughts
6.Emotional instability
Many victims experience emotional/phycological within abusive relationships.
Signs of emotional abuse in a relationship:
1. If one partner is threatening other or often says hurtful words.
2. Points out their flaws or mistakes regularly.
3.Controlling or gets extremely angry when other partner does not obey their orders.
4.Makes them feel bad about their physical appearance.
Emotional abuse of childern:
Childrens who are victims of emotional abuse, experience emotional maltreatment or neglect. It can cause serious damage to a child.
Emotional abuse of a child may include:
1. insulting
2. name calling
3. threatening
4. forcing a child to witness physical or emotional abuse of another
5.make them feel useless or worthless
6. neglecting
7. isolate a child from socializing with others
Signs of emotional abused childern:
1.anxiety or fear
2.eating disorder
3.sleeping disorder
4.experiencing sudden change in behaviour
5. poor performance in school
If you witness those above signs of emotional abuse in your friend, any member of your family, neighbour, school or college mate
talk with them. Don't judge or shame them. We don't know what situations they are going through. We should understand them and make them feel "they are not alone".
