CHAPTER 36: Failure

"Are we just about ready, Doctor Alphys?" The king waltzed into the laboratory, bearing a child in his arms. Still asleep, she hung solemnly, as if a rag doll compared to the superior Gods before her.

The Goddess of knowledge jumped slightly at the sudden voice of the king. "J-just finishing up some of the final touches, your majesty." She said, the quiver was apparent within the short Goddess' voice at the mere presence of her king.

"Please finish up soon. The child may be starting to stir." The king replied, looking down at the human girl with nervousness. He himself did not know what to expect from his experiment and feared the life of his beloved and the little one he carried.

"P-Place the child here, on this table" Alphys stuttered once more, waddling near the large, metal table in the center of the room. She patted it softly as the King placed the girl down gently, as if she were his own kin.

The was a moment of hesitation within the King's voice as he tried to visualize the right words to say. "Are you sure this will not harm the human?" He said.

This sentence surprised the small Goddess, for she had never seen the King so vulnerable since the Queen's death. Could he have cared about the human girl? She did not know why you could have sympathy for such a corrupted creature. "I c-can't guarantee anything during this process. It's a new experiment for a-all of us here. We will see once the extraction takes p-place." She said, moving back to tinker with the last few things on the machine surrounding the human girl.

"And how will the extraction procedure take place?" The king said, watching Alphys finish up the last preparations.

"W-Well, once we harness the human's soul, the Queen's powers will already b-be apparent to those of us inside of the room." She explained, filling his barren mind full of knowledge. "Y-You see, forcefully taking a soul out of an organism leaves a s-special kind of vulnerability towards the soul. I-It shows the given trait and any other substance within the soul as a p-physical form that we can obtain." She said, pausing from her work to focus on the explanation at hand.

She did not want to misguide the king through the process and focused on her speech with incredible concentration. "H-However, we must proceed with caution once the soul is out of its given vessel. It cannot be exposed to anything that could p-potentially damage the soul either, or it could possibly kill the current h-host." She paused to catch her breath. "We do not n-need an airtight room, however, It is wise to have as few m-monsters in the room during the experiment as p-possible."

There was a moment of silence as the King took in the information given to him. "I see." He replied, awaiting a further explanation from the Goddess.

"O-Once the soul is lifted from the body, we will be able to i-isolate the Queen's force inside of the human's soul. We can separate it by m-moving the nature to a controlled, compact area within the soul, where it is easily e-extracted. Since it will be taking the physical form of the Queen's soul, in t-technicality, we will be able to remove her from the h-human's soul. The only way I see the best fit o-outcome is using a syringe for a gradual withdrawal of her nature; only taking a small a-amount over a period of time." She spoke fluently, as if this was second nature to her. However, it was not hard to notice the quivering tone in her voice of nervousness. Her self-doubt was far too immense for such an in-depth explanation. "I-If too much is taken out at once, the host may go into shock from the rapid d-depletion of the size of the soul."

"Won't the needle hurt the soul?" The king quickly asked, questions arising into his head. He did not know what was going to become of the girl after the procedure takes place and he was curious to find out.

"Y-Yes." Alphys said, with a bit of hesitancy as the King's eyes held the string of doubt within them. "However, there is no painless way of e-extracting a part of the soul. O-Once a part of the soul, it fuses with the given soul trait and is v-virtually impossible to remove from the body."

"And what about my Wife's soul?" The king then asked, causing the trembling Goddess to look up to the ceiling to think for a slight moment.

"T-The Queen's soul, bit by bit, will have to be immediately stabilized, or it will die from the lack of necessities needed for it to grow." She said, picking up a small jar the King quickly recognized from his past actions. It was capable of stabilizing any soul, no matter the trait, nor the species. Trying to block the memories quickly breaking through his mind, he attempted to push away the reminiscence of trying to force his Son's soul back into his body, shortly after he had killed himself over the grief of his younger sister.

"The Q-Queen's power is consuming the Human soul; humans are not built for the capacity and strength of a God, therefore their s-souls are too weak to harness the power." Alphys interrupting his thoughts before the tears threatened to well up inside of his eyes. "If the Queen's soul c-continues to fuse with the child's soul, then it is inevitable that she will d-die in the end; killing both her and the Queen."

After a moment of silence, it was evident that the Goddess of Knowledge had answered all of the King's questions regarding the matter. With that thought in mind, she quickly inhaled deeply, and let out a large sigh to calm her anxious nerves. "T-The preparations have been c-complete. We may now begin the e-extraction process."

"I shall leave it to you." The king said, stepping back from the unfamiliar machine powering up.

The Goddess of wisdom quickly began to get to work; flipping switches and knowing exactly where each button resides on the powerful machine. The sound of a jet plane began to rattle the walls surrounding them, and the King threatened to cover his ears in such a ruckus.

However, his thoughts were stopped as everything went quiet for a split second of time. The Human's soul, arising from her chest, had been successfully removed from her body and stabilized within the air waves the Goddess had created. At such speed, the wind tunnels provided a stabilizing barrier that surrounded the soul as it remained unphased by the chaos surrounding it.

The child remained unconscious as Alphys made her way over towards the fountain of light that flowed from the pure soul. Brilliant spirals of light looped around the soul, as if they were flares along the surface of the sun.

Alphys attempted to separate the power of the Queen efficiently, however, she could not seem to find the border of the human's trait versus the power of Life; it was just the Queen's compelling force within the levitating light. She was struck with a swarm of confusion, pondering her next move as the machine continued to roar.

The King attempted to speak to her, wondering what was wrong in the series of discord within the room. However, even his thoughts were blocked my the boisterous vibrations of the machine keeping the soul stabilized. It seemed that the deafening noises threatened to cause the walls to collapse onto them in this brief moment of time. He did not know if he should attempt to escape the horrible sounds of the device.

Alphys, quickly moving forward, grasps the syringe with her dominant hand, placing the needle firmly inside of it. Carefully moving towards the soul, she placed the soul carrier onto the ground as close as she could.

Her arm extended, as she began to insert the needle inside of the bright soul. Suddenly, within he midst of extracting, an excruciating crack was audible throughout the entire room, one that even brought the King's attention to. Alphys quickly examined the soul, but could still not find traces of the human's trait, however, glancing down upon the sleeping figure, she could quickly see the droplet of blood streaming down her pale jaw.

Immediately, she put the syringe down, and hurried over to the machine without a drop of Life's soul in the syringe. Powering off the machine, a deafening silence wafted through the room as she rushed to the host's side, pleading for the Queen's soul to still be intact. The soul returned to the Human's body quickly, and the girl's skin returned to the normal flesh color it was previously before the extraction process.

"What happened?!" The King exclaimed, almost enraged at the small Goddess, whilst looking at the helpless human girl.

"W-We have to get the Queen's power out of that soul as fast as possible." Alphys said urgently. "Ultimately, the Q-Queen's force as fused with the human's soul, a-and I am unable to detect which part is the Queen's and which part is the h-human's." She spoke, looking at the child with worried eyes. "However, the extraction at this rate w-will kill her."

"Then why must we get my Wife's soul out as soon as possible?" The king asked, confused at the urgency of the small Goddess.

"Whilst looking into her s-soul, I could visibly see the traces of corruptions b-beginning to swarm the child's soul. If we continue to evade the extraction process, the Q-Queen's soul will become corrupted as well." She said, looking back at the king. "If we c-can extract the soul fast, though it will kill the human, w-we just might be able to save the Queen from the blackened corruption w-within the human's soul." Alphys said, her eyes filled with determination. "It's either that, or they b-both die."

"what do we do with the human in the meantime?" the King noted, looking at child with worry. The human child now looked sickly, and he could only assume that the crack within the soul was the human's. She was beginning to die.

"W-We need to give her soul at least a day to revitalize itself for the next e-extraction, so that it will be healthy enough to withstand the withdrawal." She said, "I s-suggest that we relocate her to a-an enclosed space where she cannot r-run away from the castle once she h-has woken up from her slumber." Alphys reiterated, nodding her head.

"I will make arrangements for just that." The king replied, seeking out his advisor once again. "Keep an eye on the child until I return." He said to the Goddess, who promptly nodded her head at his response.

"Y-Yes your majesty."
