7.Aftermath

The next morning she was already up and had done with all the chores around the house before 4 am in the morning. When Jacob woke up he went to her room to find it organized and the rest of the house clean. When the house was clean it meant that she wasn't anywhere in house. She was either in two spots: The woods and the garage. And right he was, he found her changing the Yamaha FX8 engine oil.

"What's wrong?" He asked as he watched her put the oil cap back on

"Nothing. Why?" She asked as she as she took away the oil she had collected in a container.

"You love fixing my bike whenever something is bothering you in school." He tossed her a small oil stained towel, she caught it and started to wipe the oil from her hands.

"Don't worry about it. You were busy so I decided to do it for you. I lubricated the chains, greased the seatpost, and carbon pasted it. Just in case cause it would become slippery and it may have caused some type of damage on it." She cleaned her tools before putting them where they belonged. She then used a funnel to pour the oil into a blue 3 gallon container to dispose of and give it to a oil change shop.

"What happened in school?" He asked as he looked at her avoiding eye contact.

"Nothing much, just that I don't know what I'm supposed to do with the work my teachers give me." She lied but at the same time told the truth.

"Is that all?" He raised his eyebrows.

"Yea." She put the cap on and placed the container somewhere on the ground. Far from anything that could generate sparks or fire and could sent the house flying to the moon.

"Ok, let's get something to eat in Ihop." He jiggled his car kees in front of her.

"How long do I have until I get into the car?" She asked as she made her way to the door.

"20 minutes." He tapped his watch as she started running into the house rushing to take a shower. She looked at the reflection on her mirror as she combed her hair. She expected her reflection to get ready while giving dirty looks for not taking care of herself. She rushed trying to tie her black converse as she slipped on a black shirt that matched her grey camouflage pants.

He was not willing to leave his alcoholism behind because to him it was a scape despite the headaches. But because of her, he unconsciously stopped because he was too busy to go to bars. And even if he had beers in his apartment he could never drink them in peace because she had grown attached to him. As soon as night came the first thing she would do was cry until he made her sleep. If he moved a bit she would always wake up and cry, even if she didn't feel him close or near her. Mrs. Ratignolle in the other hand would always wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning to babysit the baby. She had used her influences to help him with the child claiming that the mother existed. He was claimed the real father despite her having cheated on him and he willing to take care of the child. According to the legal papers the real father never showed up and does not know about her existence. She even helped him name her Luna de Carolina Heathens and enrolled her in pre-k. She would drop the little girl to school and pick her up. She would help her do her homework and she was the one who helped her talk. Luna wouldn't say anything until Jacob would come from work to pick her up. Until then she would say papa and babble as if she was talking and he didn't tell her to shut up. Instead he would look impressed. He couldn't understand a word she would say but encouraged her to talk even if he was sick and was tired from work. The role that Mrs. Ratignolle played was big. She taught him how to cook despite how world destruction was about to happen. When Luna got sick with a high fever,he missed work to look after her even when he felt useless and didn't know what to do. Or for her first tooth, he was even crying because he didn't know what to do and felt like a worthless piece of shit. No one taught him how to be a dad but he tried to do his best, if it wasn't for Mrs.Ratignolle he was lost. He even started saving up money for college to try and get a degree to work at a higher paying job. He even bought a car he could afford to drive her to the zoo and to school safely.

She was 4 years old when Mrs. Ratignolle fell ill. She couldn't move a lot so she would always sit on her chair while watching her play with dolls.

"Nanny, are you tired?" Luna asked as she looked at the poor old woman's sunken eyes.

"Yes, my dear. Why do you ask?" Mrs.Ratignolle asked.

"I want to sleep next you in your bed." She grabbed her dolls and stuffed them in her little school bag full of toys.

"Ok,my dear, let's go to bed and sleep." She held her fragile old hand out, Luna held it and tried to help her get up and lead her into her small bed room.

"'I'm sorry I can't be by your side for much longer, my little princess." The old lady breathed into Luna's scent.

"You've served me well for as long as you could." Luna caressed Ratignolle's sunken cheeks and wiped away a tear.

"I don't want to sleep yet, my little princess." She smiled weakly at her big and sad dark brown eyes.

"Please, don't let me be the reason that you are staying so long in here. Grandma." She planted a soft kiss on Ratignolle's wrinkled forehead. In midst of her sleep all she dreamed about where the woods Mrs.Ratignolle always took her to.

"There will be a time when you will come back to your tribe and take control of what was once yours." Mrs. Ratignolle looked so young that it was hard for her to recognize her.

"I know nanny." Luna nodded as she hugged Mrs. Ratignolle.

"Forgive me, my little princess but I can't remain by your side any longer." Ratignolle planted a soft kiss on Luna's head and hugged her small body.

"You'll always be my beloved nanny." She sobbed as she felt Ratignolle's heartbeat slow down to a stop and her embrace loosen on her.

"You'll always be my beloved nanny." She kept on sobbing. The Ratignolle from her dreams dissolved into ashes, slipping through her fingers as the wind blew her ashes away. When Jacob came from work he opened Mrs.Ratignolle's apartment to pick luna up. No one was in the living room, food wasn't prepared and the dishes were still undone. Luna and Ratignolle where nowhere to be found until he opened the door to her room. He found the two of them asleep. He approached them and saw Mrs.Ratignolle's skin was pale while luna was crying in her arms.

"Luna?" Luna slowly turned around to face him.

"She will never come back again." She slipped out of Mrs.Ratignolle's arms and hugged Jacob.

Luna opened the door to the car, threw her bag on the floor and slammed the door once she was in.

"I won't be back until 4 tonight." He informed as he pulled out of the driveway and started to drive.

"Ok, don't worry about me, i'll be fine." She smiled a reassuring smile.

"I know. There's food ready to be heated and money if you want take out." As soon as he finished his sentence her phone went off with a little "Ping". Luna had a message on facebook.

"Who is it?" He asked as he watched her go through her phone a little annoyed.

"Just a guy I met yesterday." She didn't respond to his "Hey, can you accept my friend request?" message.

"Have you talked to your friends?" He stopped the cars as he let a deer cross the road before continuing driving.

"No, they already forgot I existed like always."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Do you still miss her?" Jacob asked asked after a long time of silence.

"Who?" She asked confused.

"Your nanny?" He asked.

"Yeah, she might of have been an annoying woman for you but we got to admit it she helped us a lot." She smiled at the sound of the old nickname she had named Mrs.Ratignolle.

"She might have been a ratty old woman but damn she was a great help." He chuckled to the memory of her pointing her finger at him and accusing him of eating the christmas cookies.

"Remember the time she made a whole thanksgiving dinner. She had spent the whole day cooking just for us two to show up?" She hated Mrs.Ratignolle's friends and family. She was 4 when the old woman had cooked a really big dinner for her, Jacob, her friends and her family members but no one bothered to call to tell her that they weren't going to show up. The food became cold and it was past 10 almost 11 in the night, she suddenly started crying.

"Nanny. Don't cry, they'll pay for making you cry." Luna muttered as she hugged the old sad lady.

"It's alright my little princess, they never show up even though I treated them like gods and goddesses."The old lady tried to smile.

"Don't be sad, you have us." She ran to her father's side who with no effort knelt beside the old lady.

"I may have never liked you before but I'm very thankful for being by my side when I never needed you and when I needed you the most."He hugged the old lady. "I'm sorry if I ever made you feel bad but thank you for everything you've done for us."The old woman smiled by jacob's words, he had become like a son to her, the son she never had, and the niece she wished she had.

"You'll always have us for as long as we live." Luna promised making the old woman smile with a little warmth in her eyes. "Nanny."

"You'll always have us for as long as we live. ." Luna promised, making the old woman smile with warmth and joy in her eyes.

" How was school yesterday?" Jacob asked as he stopped at an intersection allowing oncoming cars to drive by.

" Ehh, everything was fine but I'm not sure if I'm going to pass all of my classes." He glanced towards her.

" Why may that be?" He asked.

" Don't know." She shrugged.

" is it because you're feeling lazy about it?" He knew that she was smart but most of the time she hated to show it and always pretended to not understand the subject and that she was just stupid.

" I guess." Her phone chimed again.

" Please don't fail, at least pass with an 80." She sighed.

"ok." She watched as the heavy grey clouds formed and raindrops started to fall. Each after, they all fell making soft thuds against the glass.

"Have you found any friends?" It was a quick move without a second thought and without missing a heartbeat in it, she enhanced the emergency brake and steered the steering wheel making the car drift. Jacob was trying to catch his breath as the deer sprinted out of the road into the woods.

" Not really, not many people talk me and I don't bother to talk to them." She calmly unhinged the emergency brake.

" How did you know it was there?" He asked as he started to drive.

"I saw it run into the road ahead of us." Thunder rumbled in the distance.

" Really? I didn't see it."

" You know what? Just drop me off at school and I'll eat whatever food they're giving." He looked at her.

" Are you sure?" He asked concerned.

" Yeah, we can get breakfast some other time together."

"Ok." He nodded as he watched her slowly doze off with her head leaning against the cool window.

Not many people showed up for Mrs.Ratignolle's service, the only people that showed up were some of her supposed old friends, a couple of neighbors and two lawyers. Little Luna wouldn't stop glancing at the Casket almost expecting the old woman to wake up but it never happened. All eyes were drawn to her, the way her hair curled, the way her natural tanned skin glowed in the candle light, her plump little lips and the air of authority around her and coming from her. She wouldn't let go of Jacob's hand, almost as if she was afraid that he too would leave her. Jacob approached the Casket to look at Mrs.Ratignolle one last time and to thank her for everything she had done for him and Luna. As he approached the Casket Luna let go of his hand to run towards the casket.

" Nanny!" She shouted as she tippy toed trying to look into the casket but all she accomplished was touch the soft white silk of the casket walls. Jacob tried to pick her up but she only glared at him before running towards a chair and drag it near Mrs.Ratignolle's Casket. She then climbed the chair and smiled.

" I'm sorry I let you go." Her smile faded replaced by a sorrowful look in her eyes. "But you yearned to be with your only child and I couldn't deny you your wish after everything you've gone through in life." She leaned down and planted a soft kiss on Ratignolle's dead and cold forehead. Thunder rumbled nearby making the walls tremble. Her mind was not that of a five year old: the type that thought that the old woman was just asleep, she understood that once your body gives it's last breath your heart will stop and there's nothing anyone can do to to bring them back, that no matter how many times you pleaded and begged for them to come back they only end up leaving you with no promise of a tomorrow.

"Before I came along her life was not much different from yours but it took some time for you two to learn how to trust." She hopped off of the chair and made her way towards the spot the two of them had been to get her stuffed black wolf : a gift from Ratignolle's to Luna when she was a couple of months old. Throughout the whole service Luna kept on happily playing with her wolf, pretending wolf was running through the woods ready to kill whoever had stolen his rightful place as the chief and alfa of the tribe and pack when in truth the woods were just the legs of the metal chairs. She had a wild imagination, a smart mind, and was stronger than most 5 year olds.

" I feel sorry for that poor chold." A woman scoffed to her husband thinking that no one had heard them even thought they were loud enough for some people around them to heard her words, she heard her words and looked at them.

"Don't feel sorry for me instead do it for your dead unborn ugly child." She pointed to the woman's pregnant belly, the woman gasped clearly insulted by the child's words.

" You insolent bastard." The woman raised her hand and slapped Luna. The child was shocked by the impact of the woman's blow but when she touched her red cheek she started to smile causing a cold chill run down the woman's spine and a horrible body ripping pain in her uterus. Something warm trailed down in between her legs.

" Honey I think my water broke." She reached for her husband who took her hand and helped her sit down.

" No it did not break. It's dead and your body is rejecting it just like the vile trash you are."

" Luna that is not nice." Jacob places his hand on Luna's shoulder making her flinch.

" But she started it." She pointed to the woman.

" I know she did but if she did then she's much stupid than a five year old especially when pregnant. Never understood women." He picked Luna up and grabbed his stuff leaving the service and the woman in gapping rage for his insolence. He unlocked his car and gently placed Luna on her chair careful to not wake her up.

Jose told Jacob about what happened after he left the service. The woman gave birth do a dis formed dead child and now she wanted to sue Luna for no reason.

*So much for being a father and trying not to get in trouble* He thought to himself as he unlocked his apartment and turned the lights of to get to his room and place the sleeping child on the old cot, he locked the door, turned the lights off and slept on the small run down couch with his legs and arms dangling off. He was starting to doze off when the doorbell chimed, it was really strange that someone was mocking on his door late at night but as he opened it the two lawyers from the service stood eerily in front of his door.

" May I help you? gentlemen" He asked.

"Jacob Blake?" One of them asked.

" Yes?" One of the lawyers took out a thick crumbled letter.

" Never open this until someone comes looking for her and tries to kill her. Orders from Ratignolle along with her influences." The old woman had had her own secrets but all Jacob knew was that he was no longer poor. He now owned a house in North Carolina and his name was Jacob Blake Heathens. She adopted leaving him and Luna with all her actions like business and her fortune no one knew about. She had lied about having lost all her fortune and businesses to thieves or gambling games.

He pulled up in front of a school building and woke her up.

" Are you sure you . The want to come with a and get something to eat?" He asked.

" Thanks but no dad. See ya later." She opened the side door and walked under the heavy rain towards the entrance of the school. When he drove away, she didn't enter the school for three hours outside getting drenched.
