girl meets secret life
"Y'KNOW WHAT I like? Life. And I like it when it doesn't change. We should sing our happy song." Riley said.
"We don't have a happy song." Sophia said.
"We should have a happy song."
"We will never have a happy song." Maya said.
"Not with that attitude."
"So you don't want anything to change?" Maya asked.
"No, I don't like change." Riley said, "Change fills my pockets with pennies of uncertainty."
The two girls just looked at her.
They walked into class and sat down.
"All right. So should we actually learn about what happened in Belgium in 1831?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"No!" Farkle shouted.
"No?" Sophia questioned.
"I always get my hopes up and then something happens to hurt my little Farkle heart. Well, this time I refuse to believe."
"In eighteen thirty-one..." Mr. Matthews continued
"Yes? Wait!" Farkle said.
He looked over at Riley, "Anything going to suddenly happen to you?"
"No changes, lovin' life." She told him.
"Anything going to happen to you?" He asked Lucas.
"Nothing ever happens to me." He said.
"Maya?"
"She's asleep Farkle." Sophia told him.
"What about you Sophia?"
"I'm just waiting on Belgium eighteen thirty-one."
"Oh my gosh. This is it." He said.
"In eighteen thirty-one Belgium-" Mr. Matthews said but was interrupted.
The door opened and a boy walked in.
"What? Y'all started without me?"
"Get out!" Farkle shouted.
He ignored Farkle, "Someone in this room is going to be very surprised to see me."
"Is it me?" Riley asked him.
"Don't know, sugar, but could you get any cuter?" He flirted.
"Well, I can't answer that."
"You got a transcript, kid?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"I do. Check out them grades. Here, let me sing 'em to you. De, de, de, de, de, de... de f." He sang.
Maya smiled, "Hey I know that song."
"Isaiah Babineaux. From Austin, Texas." Mr. Matthews reads aloud.
"What are you doing here, Zay?" Lucas asked.
"Well, the first thing I'm doing is waitin' for a better reaction from you."
"Maya, Sophia, something's changing." Riley said.
"Okay, Mr. Teach, where do I sit? You know, usually, I'm more of a back-row kind of guy." Zay said.
He took one glance at Brenda, who waved slightly.
"Whoa. That's unusual."
"Have a seat right there, Mr. Babineaux." He said.
He pointed to a seat behind Lucas.
"Lucas, do you know this Isiah?" Sophia asked.
"Yeah, tell 'em you know me good." Zay told Lucas.
"How 'bout we talk later, okay?" He said.
He shrugged his shoulders.
"Well, Mr. Babineaux, if you work out as well as last years new student we're happy to have you."
"Wait. What? Lucas, you're doing okay here?" Zay asked.
"Why wouldn't he be okay here?" Sophia questioned.
"Not currently on probation? No disciplinary actions? They just let you wander free?" Zay said.
"Sit down!" Farkle shouted.
Zay sat down and didn't say anything.
"Okay new guy's all settled in and there's still class time left so do it! Do it while I'm still tingly!" Farkle said.
"So, In eighteen thirty-one, Belgium declared-" Mr. Matthews said.
"What is the secret of life?" Yogi asked, "I'm sorry, Mr. Farkle. I know I'm not your daughter, but I too have value in this world. What is the secret of life?" Yogi finished.
Mr. Matthews smiled and picked the eraser up.
"Don't do it! Put it down and no one gets hurt." Farkle threatened.
He erased the board anyway. Farkle but his head in his shirt screamed, and repeatedly banged his head on the desk.
"Yogi has asked the primary riddle of the universe, what is the secret of life? People spend their whole lives trying to figure it out. I was lucky. I had a teacher who cared about me to make sure I knew. Lucas, You got an opinion on this?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Yes, What do you got, Mr. Moral Compass?" Maya asked.
"Did you just call Lucas Friar your moral compass?" Zay asked Maya.
He hit Lucas in the shoulder, "Ha, they called you moral compass!"
Lucas turned around and just looked at him and he automatically stopped.
"Okay."
"Something bad is going to happen, Sophia and Maya." Riley said.
"Yeah. It occurs to me you're trying to tell us Ranger Rick was a little different back in Texas." Maya said.
"What do you know about Frair, Babineaux?" Sophia asked.
"What do I know? What do they know, exactly? 'Cause I wouldn't wanna say anything wrong. They know you're a year older, right?" Zay asked.
"Yeah. Know they do." He said.
He drew his attention towards Sophia, who was looking more towards Zay.
"Oh, yeah, it's my fault. Look at you!" Zay said.
"Okay, that's enough, Mr. Babineaux." Mr. Matthews told him.
"Oh, so you know about him?" Zay asked Mr. Matthews.
"I know all about Mr. Friar." He told him.
It was still very evident that Sophia and Lucas really did like each other.
But Zay was making it really hard for her not to lose her cool.
"Excuse me?" Riley asked.
"Riley, you're shaking." Thomas said.
"Mr. Matthews? You know something?" Sophia asked him.
"Back in Texas-" Lucas started.
"Lucas! You sure?" Mr. Matthews asked.
He nodded his head and continued.
"Back in Texas I did something. I had to leave."
"It was great! I mean, they threw him out of the whole school!" Zay said.
"What?" Sophia questioned:
"I came here to get a new start. Nobody knew me here." He said.
Zay raised his hand, "I know him."
"Do I know you?" Sophia asked him.
Cafeteria
Riley, Maya, and Sophia were eating lunch.
Sophia tried avoiding the Lucas situation right now.
"Look! We don't know the story yet, let's know the story before you go to Rileytown and Hopetown." Maya told her friends.
"I'm not going to Hopetown. I'm calm." Sophia said.
"So am I." Riley piped in.
"I like it worse when you're calm. C'mon. Be you." Maya said lifting Sophia's arms.
Lucas sat down at the end of the table.
"Deny it." Sophia told him.
"Sophia."
"Tell me that whoever this Zay kid is, that he can't just come and change you from the Lucas we know. Tell me nothing changes." Sophia said.
"That's all you have to do, Lucas. You hear me? I just called you by your actual name for the first time ever. That's how much it's important to me. Because it's important to her." Maya said.
"Deny it." The two girls said.
"I can't."
"I like you. I went on my first date with you. Do you think it's right to let me like you without telling me who you are?" Sophia asked.
"You know who I am. I'm Ranger Rick. We rode on a white horse. I asked Mr. Matthews permission just to go out with you. Who does that?"
"Were you thrown out of school?" Sophia asked.
"Yes."
"For a whole year?"
"Yes."
"I finally like you." Maya said.
She wasn't helping.
"You told me you wanted to be a veterinarian. You told me you gave birth to a horse." Sophia said.
"That had to hurt." Riley said.
She wasn't helping either.
"Why wouldn't you tell me something like this?" Sophia asked.
"It's not something I'm proud of. I thought I could start over. I guess I was wrong. I guess you do something and that's the end of you."
"You think that's what I'm upset about? Whatever you did? Then you don't know me. And I don't know you."
"Why are you acting like this?"
"Real friends talk to each other and real friends listen, remember? I would have listened. I'm your friend. Whatever you did. Why wouldn't you trust me with it? People who care about you are supposed to trust you with stuff. Wait a minute."
Sophia stood, "Mr. Matthews knew about this?"
Matthews Residents
Sophia opened the door and closed it shut.
"You knew?!"
"Well, I'm not gonna beat that." Auggie said.
He hopped off the table.
"Boy, are you gonna get yelled at, Mr. Matthews! Oh, I missed it?" Maya said.
She hit her shoulder.
"Do it again."
"A normal people sanctuary. I'd like a fountain. Maybe a candle." Topanga said.
"How could you keep something like this away from me?" Sophia asked him.
"Just someplace where people don't go hysterical over every little thing." Topanga said.
"Yes, I did know Lucas was expelled." He said.
"What?" Topanga shouted.
She shut her book and stood up.
"Topanga, you knew, I told you all about this." He whispered.
"Yes, I know you told me all about this, but I want nothing to do with that!" She whispered back looking at Sophia.
"Why would you let me like him if you know something about him?" Sophia asked.
"SophiaAnn, honey, whatever this is about Lucas, that I know nothing about, I'm sure your father knows exactly what you need to learn from it." She said.
"Really? Mr. Matthews? You got anything?" Sophia asked.
History: Mr. Matthews
"Al washes a car in six minutes. Fred washes the same car in eight minutes. How long does it take Al and Fred to wash the same car together?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"How is this anything?" Sophia asked.
Farkle and Thomas answered, "Three minutes twenty-five point seven seconds."
"Wrong!" Mr. Matthews said.
"I'm sorry what did you just say?" Farkle asked.
"You're wrong." He said.
"We're wrong? You're a history teacher teaching English, Science, whatever you got going on at home. You waltz your wife in here on career day."
"She's a respected attorney."
"My father said she should've been my mother!" Farkle shouted.
"What do you want from me?" He asked.
"Mr. Matthew teaches us about a lot of things. He's open-minded that way." Lucas said.
"He can be open-minded because he knows who we are." Sophia told him.
"Oh. She took us both out." Lucas said.
"I teach this way because in my old school I had a very strict teacher." He said.
"Did he teach History, English, or Math?" Zay asked.
"I don't know. But in his class, there was no talking. No interruptions." He said.
"So you didn't like him?" Zay asked.
"I loved him." He said.
"Then why don't you teach like him?" Farkle asked.
"Because I would never try and be like him. I could only fail. I only succeed you guys if I get my teaching across as effectively as he does." He told them.
"You do. He does." Maya said.
"Thank you, Maya. And I will now. Al washes a car in six minutes. Fred washes the same car in eight minutes." He said.
"He thinks it's math class! Somebody stop him! You, what's your name?" Zay asked Farkle.
"Farkle."
"What'd you call me?"
"My name is Farkle."
"Who would do that to you?"
"So your assignment today is to wash a car, together." Mr. Matthews said.
Sophia pointed to Lucas, "With him?"
"Especially with him." He said.
"If you do it correctly, You will find the answer is three minutes twenty-five point seven seconds." Thomas said.
"If you do it correctly, You will find the secret of life." Mr. Matthews said.
Outside Gym
"Done." Maya and Riley said finishing the car.
"Amazing." Farkle said.
"How long?" Riley asked.
"Nineteen minutes, forty-two seconds. You are the worst car washer in the class." Thomas told them.
"Oh, You mean no one will ever ask me to wash a car for them? Say it." Maya said.
"You're a genius." Riley said.
"Oh stop." Maya said and flipped her hair.
"The only two who washed the car in six minutes and eight seconds was Sophia and-" Farkle said.
"Lucas? Was it Lucas? Could've been Lucas? Lucas?" Maya asked.
Thomas smiled, "Yeah, Lucas."
"I'm not washing a car with him." Sophia said.
"Oh yes you are, in three minutes twenty-five point seven seconds, and I will go back to Mr. Matthews and say, Ha!" Farkle said.
"Now pick up that hose!" Thomas said.
"Fine!" Sophia said.
"Now pick up that bucket." Farkle told Lucas.
"Yes, sir."
"And... Go!" Thomas shouted.
The two of them were working on other ends of the car.
"No, no. Work together. The equation doesn't work if you don't work together." Thomas said.
"Sophia, I could use some water over here to rinse this off." Lucas said.
Sophia turned, "Oh. Water? You want some water?"
"Yes, Please."
"Oh, Huckleberry, Huckleberry, Whatever bad, bad things you did at your school, you are still a Huckleberry." Maya said.
She slowly backed away from him.
"Why? You need water to rinse off-" He said.
Sophia took the hose and sprayed him with it.
He jumped over the hood of the car.
"Tell me what you did!" Sophia shouted.
"Nothing this bad!"
"They threw you out of school!"
"Wash the car! You're supposed to be washing the car! Why aren't you washing the car? Wash the car?" Farkle and Thomas shouted.
Sophia turned around and looked at them.
They backed away.
Sophia put her focus back on Lucas, "When are you going to tell me what you did?"
"Fine! You want me to tell you what I did?"
"Everything!"
"Okay." He said, "Good girl, Just give me the hose, and I'll tell you. Good girl."
"Fine."
She handed him the hose.
"Thank you." She said.
He smiled, "No, thank you."
"You wouldn't dare."
He smiled and sprayed her with the hose.
She screamed and backed into the fence.
"Wow. Yours is a lot of something." Zay said sitting next to Maya and Riley.
"She's a lot of work." Maya said.
"What happens to her when you're home, sick?"
"Oh, We could never get sick." Riley told him.
"So, just between you and us two what did Ranger Rick really do? Did he tip over a cow? Did he put eleven gallons in a ten-gallon hat?" Maya asked him.
"I already told you too much and he'll tell you what he wants to tell you." He said.
"You were really best friends?" Riley asked.
"Oh, there were never better best friends." He said.
"I think there would and if Sophia was coming from Texas, at least she'd tell me what happened." Maya told him.
"Like I said something happened." He said looking over at Lucas and Sophia, "Your friend's a fountain."
"Wait a minute! Wait, wait! Lucas, I lost my contact lens."
Sophia bent down to look.
"Oh my gosh. Sophia, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to do that." He said.
He bent down to help her look.
Sophia stood up and grabbed a bucket full of water.
"Wait. Since when did you wear-"
Sophia places the bucket on his head.
Grabbed him by the forearms and pushed him against the car.
"Well, you... were the first boy I ever liked! That's a big deal for me. Are you worth it? Tell me and I'll believe you. I want to believe you. Are you worth it?" Sophia asked him.
"Yes." He said.
"Okay."
She took the bucket off his head.
"You have completely ruined this experiment for me! You are significantly over three minutes-" Thomas said.
"By how much?" Sophia asked.
"A day! And you haven't even dried the car yet." Farkle said.
Lucas and Sophia smiled at each other.
They both picked up Farkle and dried him with the car/
"Okay, okay. I think It's dry!" He said.
"You're a tight little group aren't you?" Zay asked Maya and Riley.
"Yeah, we are." They said.
The two of them stood up.
"Hey! Farkle's right! This is a serious assignment! Now line up right there! Stand up Straight! Straighter!" Maya shouted.
Farkle, Riley, Thomas, Lucas, and Sophia stood in a line.
Maya smiled, "I'm gonna show you how you do this right! Open your mouths! Open 'em! Amateurs."
She sprayed every single one of them with the hose.
History: Mr. Matthews
"Al washes a car in six minutes. Fred washes the same car in eight minutes. How long does it take Al and Fred to wash the same car together?" Mr. Matthews asked, "Farkle? Thomas?"
"They were snapping towels at each other! I said, "The car's not even dry yet!" and they went..." Farkle said.
The two boys stood up and imitated everything that happened.
"Whoa! She's the fountain!" Thomas said.
"So, not three minutes twenty-five point seven seconds?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"We were "Wruh"" Thomas muttered.
Mr. Matthews smiled, "Excuse me?"
"We were "Wruhh!"" Farkle shouted.
"Well... Takes a big man to admit when he was "Wruhh!" There is no answer to this equation. Except on paper. Except in a Math class. Which this isn't."
"Is there an answer to life?" Lucas asked.
"Ah. Now we have arrived at the secret." Mr. Matthews said.
"Lucas' secret?" Sophia asked.
"Bigger than that." Mr. Matthews said.
"Sophia, sometimes things come out when they're supposed to come out." Lucas said.
"As long as you're not different than I think because I think a lot of you." Sophia said.
"I used to be different than I am now."
"What happened?"
"I came here."
"And there's your answer, Yogi. There's the secret of life. People change people. No matter what I teach you in here, learning from the people you care about is more important than words on any page. That's why I let you talk in here sometimes. That's why it's interesting. Mr. Babineaux might've appreciated that if he was here." Mr. Matthews said, "Where's your friend, Mr. Friar?"
"I don't know. I can't always be responsible for him."
"Sure you can. But maybe in a different way."
"Look! Zay's mouth is what gets him into trouble. He may act tougher than he is, maybe. But he's my friend. And I care about my friends. Sophia, You should know more about than everyone else. What was I supposed to do?" He shouted.
He looked over at her, she didn't say anything.
"I'm sorry I got mad. I'm working on it, okay?"
The class heard Zay call Lucas's name.
"Oh, not again... I'll be right back, sir." Lucas said.
He headed towards the door.
"Lucas?"
"I'm okay, sir. If I manage not to come back expelled, you have all changed me."
He left.
"Matthews?" Sophia called.
He walked out of the classroom, Sophia, Maya, Riley, Farkle, and Thomas following behind.
They turned the corner and saw Lucas and Joey talking.
"Are you the one? Because there's one in every school, isn't there? So, in this school your the-" Lucas said.
Joey cut him short, "Yeah, It's me."
"Matthews, are you going to stop this?" Sophia asked.
"Not yet." He said.
"I couldn't help but notice your pointy boots. Back in Texas, we appreciate a nice pointy boot. They can end a fight real quick." Lucas said.
He pinned Joey against the lockers which made them all jump.
"Unless somebody knows how to put his heel on the soft part where all your toes are." Lucas said.
"Ow."
"Now I'm sure you'd like to throw a punch. Except I got both your wrist and I'm as strong as a horse. I don't even work at it. I just am. "
"The way I see it. All that matters is what happens after you let go."
"Yeah. I know it'd be simpler to just start takin' shots at each other, But I'm going to tell you something, and you really need to hear this. In the end, you're going to be the one on the floor. And I'm going to be the one who walks away."
"Ohhh." Maya muttered.
"He's going to be a veterinarian." Riley said.
"I told you that." Sophia told her.
"So, I'm going to do you a favor. And let you keep your reputation. Now I'd like you to keep mine, otherwise, we're going to be twenty and still be in middle school. You want that?" Lucas said letting go.
"I am twenty." Joey said and walked away.
"So, I could've taken him right?" Zay asked.
"Sure." Lucas said, "Why do you keep finding yourself in these situations?"
"Well, I like knowing you have my back."
"What are you doing here, Zay?" Lucas asked.
"Maybe I miss my best friend, okay? Maybe I had a friend in Texas and he moved away and I miss hanging out with him and I convinced my entire family to-" Zay said.
"Your dad got transferred?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah, same as you."
"Look, I'm glad you're here, buddy but... I don't want to keep being the same guy you knew in Texas."
"Yeah. I'm not so sure you are." Zay said.
The two headed back into the classroom.
"People change people." Sophia said.
"Secret of life."
Matthews Residents
"I can drive daddy crazy in eight seconds." Riley said.
"I can drive mommy crazy in six seconds. How long does it take for Riley and Auggie to drive mommy and daddy crazy together?" Auggie asked.
"You feel like a movie?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Love to." She said.
"Hey!" Sophia said.
"What?" Auggie asked.
"You can't just get up in the middle of dinner and walk out on them before they drive you crazy." Maya said.
"We can do whatever we want. See we couldn't when we were kids, so that's why we became parents." Topanga said.
"Well, what do you call that?" Riley asked.
"Secret of life, there's lots of them." Mr. Matthews said walking out.
