girl meets rules

MR. MATTHEWS was late which was a first. He was never late.

"All right, where's your father?" Lucas asked.

"Are we getting a sub? I don't want a sub." Farkle asked.

"You never know where they've been." Thomas said.

"Will you calm down?" Riley asked.

"He's one minute late. Stop overreacting." Sophia said.

"What if he never shows up? What if I never learn anything else? I'm going down, sir! Oh, he's not even here." Farkle said.

He passed out and fell on the floor.

"We lost Farkle." Riley said.

Riley and Sophia went to help him.

"A little help, Maya?" Sophia asked.

"Matthews is out, Farkle is down, it's Maya time." Maya said.

"Farkle's fixed. No Maya time." Riley said.

He fell back on the floor.

"You may proceed." Sophia said.

The two sat down.

"During Maya time, we open the confiscation drawer and take back all the stuff from the land of unfairly taken toys." She said.

"Maya! I don't think anybody really wants." Riley said.

Everyone cheered.

"All right, whose is this?" Maya asked.

It was a frisbee.

"What'd I miss?" Farkle asked.

Maya threw the frisbee and it hit Farkle, he was down again.

"Maya! He is going to walk in and catch you and you're going to be in trouble and I am here to keep you out of trouble, and I will have failed. Do you want me to fail?" Riley asked.

"Do you want me to show you two how to have fun?" Maya asked.

"Behaving is fun." Riley said.

"Behaving is not, but I can be a fun person." Sophia said.

"Come here!" Maya said.

Sophia stood up and was with Maya, Riley stayed behind.

That's the thing with Sophia, she flipped flopped.

Some days she was as good as Riley, other days she was like Maya.

"I really don't want to." Riley said.

"You come here right now." Maya told her.

"Ring power!" Sophia shouted.

"When we say "ring power" you have to. It's a rule." Riley told everyone.

"Tell me this isn't fun." Maya said throwing ping pong balls out of the hand toy.

"Yeah, that seems like fun, but now you did it, so I don't get to do it, so are we sitting down now?" Riley asked.

Maya hands Riley and Sophia another toy.

"Of course there's another one!"

"Do it!" Maya said.

"There is nothing in this world that can make me do it." Riley said.

"Ring power." Sophia said.

In Sophia's mind, Riley needed to loosen up.

"What'd I miss?" Farkle asked.

Riley screamed and ping pong balls hit Farkle, he was down once again.

Everyone screamed and went crazy, except for Lucas.

Mr. Matthews finally walked in, "When did you guys decide there are no rules in here? When did my generosity in allowing you to express yourselves make you think you could turn my class into a zoo?"

The three girls rushed to their seats.

"I'm sorry."

Farkle spits a ping pong ball out, "I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry." The class said.

"Lucas. Why are you the only one here that didn't say "I'm sorry?"" Mr. Matthews asked.

"Because I never do anything." He said.

"No. Because you respect the rules. Because you know without them, civilization becomes chaos. The rest of you are gonna spend the afternoon thinking about that, with the exception of Lucas the good." Mr. Matthews said.

"Oh, boy! Is that gonna stick?" Lucas asked.

"I'm already making t-shirts." Sophia said.

Lucas got up and talked to Mr. Matthews.

"You put me in a real bad position here, sir." He said turning around, "I gotta do something."

"You can fight this, Lucas." Mr. Matthews said.

"No, I can't, sir. Everyone's looking."

"Okay. Do what gotta do what you gotta do."

Lucas pulled out his phone and texted Mr. Matthews.

"Detention." Mr. Matthews said.

Lucas sighed, "Oh, thank you, sir."

"Feel better, Huckleberry?" Sophia asked.

"I'm just like you now." He said.

"Yeah, we're exactly the same."

"Yeah, you're all the same. Detention, all of you." Mr. Matthews said.

Riley raised her hand.

"What do you want?"

"I'm going to be home late today, daddy."

"I know, honey."

After School

"I've always allowed you to bend the rules. But the best of students know just how far they can push before those rules are broken. Today you are not the best of students." Mr. Matthews said.

"But you know we're good people most of the time, don't you, daddy? Daddy? You're my daddy."

"Why do we need rules at all?" Maya asked.

"You think you could make it in a world without rules?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"I think I could do fine in any world." Maya said.

"The rest of you believe that?" Mr. Matthews asked.

The majority of the class nodded.

"Okay. School's out. You've got the whole place to yourselves. No rules. One hour to behave however you want. Let's see what becomes of you." Mr. Matthews said.

"Well, I think we'll be perfectly behaved ladies and gentlemen." Riley said.

"And I think within one minute you'll be eating each other."

He walked towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Sophia asked.

"I'm locking you in. The best punishment I can give is to force you to spend some time with yourselves. I'll see you in an hour. Whoever's left." He said locking the door and walking away.

"I can't believe it. He locked us in." Sophia said.

"That's fine. I don't have a problem with that. I'm not claustrophobic or anything. We're trapped. I can't breathe. There's more carbon dioxide than oxygen! The ratio is all wrong!" Farkle said gasping for air.

"Okay, Farkle gotsa go." Maya said.

"He gotsa?" Thomas asked.

"Stop. This is exactly what my father wants." Riley said, "He wants us to panic and fall apart. We have to show him that we can get through this without turning into a pack of wild animals."

It was silent.

"I'm hungry." Lucas said.

"What do you mean by that?" Farkle asked.

Lucas stood up, "Nothing, I'm just really hungry."

"Because we're best friends." Farkle said.

"Yeah, you know what else? I don't think I've ever been this hungry." Maya said.

She and Thomas stood up.

"Are you guys seriously gonna eat Farkle?" Sophia asked.

"I feel ya, Ranger Rick." Maya said.

"I'm kinda hungry, too." Riley said.

She followed behind Thomas.

"And it's not like a regular kind of hungry, right?" Thomas asked.

"No, no. This one's deep. It must be attended to." Maya said.

Sophia stood by the others, "Oh, guys, can't just eat Farkle? I mean, how much more time in here could we possibly have?"

Everyone looked up at the clock.

Twelve o'one.

"You know I could eat, too." Sophia said.

Farkle stood up as the group approached him.

"What? What are you looking at? Guys! What are you seeing right now?" Farkle asked.

"Stop talking, chicken." Lucas said.

Sophia realized what they were doing.

"No! We're not eating Farkle."

"We aren't?" Lucas asked.

Sophia put her hand on his chest.

"No, we're not. Let's prove Matthews wrong." Sophia said.

Riley walked to the front of the room.

"Let's form our own perfect society. Rileytown is a land of goodness and rainbows where everyone folds their hands nicely like so. Who wants to live in Rileytown?"

"Nobody wants to live in Rileytown! It's to lollipop!" Maya said.

"You're too lollipop!" Riley told her.

"Sister, I'm a lot of things, but I ain't no lollipop." Maya said.

"Rileytown has order, structure, and our hands folded like so!" Riley shouted, "What do you got?"

"I got Mayaville! No rules, no laws, no hand folding, and nobody says no!" Maya said.

Farkle looked up at Maya.

"No."

"You got chaos is what you got! I got order, you got chaos!"

"You know what I've got, Hopetown. Where you can do whatever you want, you can ride unicorns or race a race car. You can be whatever you want, it's all up to you, but we are civilized. We have order, but we also respect one another." Sophia said.

"You can do whatever you want?" Farkle asked.

"Yep."

"Like going out on a date?" He asked.

"In your dreams Farkle."

"You know it." He said walking away.

"You got lollipop, you got dreams, I got whoo!" Maya said.

"Okay, detention may be bringing out the worst in us, but at least we're making the time pass." Sophia said.

They looked back at the clock.

Twelve o'two.

"Eat Sophia!" Maya shouted.

"Okay." She said.

She stuck one hand out and shut her eyes.

"But no biting."

Moments later they split the room in two.

Maya's group was stacking up desk.

"Why are you guys over there? Why can't we just be one happy society that runs the way I think it should?" Riley asked.

"Because you want us to be all you." Maya asked.

"There's nothing wrong with that." Riley said.

Sophia sat in the center all by herself, she was pretty sure Farkle wanted to join her.

"We're not all you, Riley. I mean, you know the only reason I've never been able to choose between you?" Farkle asked, "Because if it was you all the time, life would be like, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la."

"La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la." Riley and Farkle sang together.

"And if it was you all the time, life would be like Descensus in cuniculi cavum!" Farkle said to Maya.

She screamed.

"But if it was you it would be unicorns and racing and marriage." Farkle said to Sophia.

"I need to be all three of you guys." He said.

"But who are you going to be with right now, Farkle?" Sophia asked.

"Before you answer that, You may want to consider a little thing I call this." Maya said.

She opened the back door.

"He forgot to lock the back door?" Thomas asked.

"Maya, we're in detention. You can't leave." Riley said.

"Hey. School's out. He said we get the place to ourselves. He said to make our own rules. Rule number one: See you around, Suckers." Maya said.

A couple of people followed her out.

"Farkle?" Riley and Sophia called.

"Hey. What part of "descensus in cuniculi cavum" do you not understand?" Farkle asked.

"All of it." They said.

"It means we drop down into the rabbit hole, man." He said walking out.

"Thomas?" Riley asked.

"I never do anything, Riley. Yeah." He said walking out.

"Lucas?"

"Hopetown it is." He said.

Sophia smiled.

"Okay." Riley said.

Twelve o'four

"What are you doing Riley?" Sophia asked.

She and Lucas put all the desk down.

"We are different towns which means you have to use that side of the classroom." She said.

"We can still see what you're doing." Sophia said.

"That's what I'm building a wall."

By the time she finished her and Lucas couldn't see anything.

She looked over at Lucas.

"So, you ready to take an adventure into Hopetown?" She asked Lucas.

"I'm always ready." He said.

The two of them sat on the ground.

"You want to ride a bull?"

It's only been a couple of minutes for the two but it felt like hours.

"Eh, I've never really thought about it but it would be cool. What about you want do you want to do?" He asked.

She put her head in his lap.

"I want to do something before time stops."

"Like what?" He asked looking down at her.

"Graduate, College, get married stuff like that."

"So you can get married in Hopetown."

Sophia looked up at him.

"I guess you can."

"But that's not what I meant." He said.

"Then what do you mean?"

"What do want to do that's fun?" He asked.

"Oh, I don't know yet. I literally do what Maya and Riley drag me into and I have fun with that."

"You do whatever they do?"

"Sometimes. Sometimes it's just Maya and Riley or Riley and I, Maya and I. But somehow we always do it together."

"You want to know something?" Lucas asked.

"Sure."

"I like you how you are, right here, right now."

After what seemed like hours of sitting in silence, a comfortable silence Lucas said something.

"Sophia."

"Huckleberry."

"Would you ever want to leave New York to visit your mom?"

"No."

"Why not."

"My mom doesn't really care about what I do. Why go visit someone who doesn't care about me?"

"Do you think that's because you never reach out to her? When was the last time you've tried to reach out to her?" He asked.

"I don't know, she left when I was five. I don't really want to know her or her life. She does all the infomercials and tv shows, she has kids with this dude I've barely seen, she brought him over when I was younger. My mom didn't cheat on my dad or anything she was just confused about her feelings. Like I was, she was happier with my dad. But he passed away and she was so upset, she was crying for weeks. I didn't go to school for a while, that's when Riley and Maya would come over with Topanga and Topanga would talk to my mom and stuff like that. I was hanging out with my Nana when my mom left. She said that she would always love me and she would be back when the time was right, but here I am still waiting for her to call."

She wasn't going to cry. There was legitimately no reason for her too.

"What do you mean by "she was confused like I was"" He asked.

"I've liked a lot of people before you came, but you know I only date blonds or I only date people how are shorter than me type people."

"So after I came you got your feeling straight."

"Yeah, I guess I did."

"We don't need them. We can just be in here, hands folded like so." Riley said, "So, what do you guys want to talk about?"

"Oh, that's right. You guys don't talk, do you? Well, the first rule of Rileytown is that everybody in here gets to talk. You there."

She pointed to a boy, "What do you have to say?"

"Hi. My name is Dave. I like corn chips and I'm sorry I didn't go with the other group or Sophia." Dave said.

"Dave!" She shouted.

"I mean, don't get us wrong." Another kid said.

"We really do respect you and everything." Sarah said.

She smiled, "You do?"

"You're one of the good ones and we'd follow you anywhere." Sarah said.

"Thank you."

"It's just that without the others, we're kinda bored out of our minds." Dave said.

"Dave! We're safe and sound and not getting into trouble." Riley said.

"Yeah, but with the problem with that is, all the good kids are in here."

"And you blocked Sophia and Lucas, we can't see them or hear them."

"We just know that they're having a lot more fun out there." Sarah said.

The door opened and Janitor Harley walked in.

"What are you doing in here? They're having a lot more fun out there." He said.

"We're in detention, janitor Harley." Riley said.

"How 'bout that? little zippy crossed the line." He said.

"Maya and Sophia influenced me."

"I've noticed that over the years. You do realize the back doors open don't you, Zippy?"

"We're aware."

"And yet this group stays in here, while the other group is rampaging down the hallway, and the last group is behind this wall.

"Well, what do you make of that?" She asked.

"I'm sure we'll find out. This lesson has your father written all over it." He said.

He walked towards the door.

"You're supposed to lock the front door."

"I'm not. It's time to find out what Maya is up to. Goodbye." He said walking out.

"Maya will be fine. Thomas and Farkle won't let her get into trouble." Riley said.

"She's stronger than them." Dave said.

"She's better when you and Sophia are with her." Sarah told me.

"Oh, please. Fourteen years of good influence can't possibly come apart in.

Twelve o'five.

Maya's group was running down the hall and they stopped, it's not as fun as they thought it would be.

"Well, this is less fun when there's no one to chase." Thomas said.

"Everybody else is in detention. I'm finally cool and nobody notices." Farkle said.

"Okay, okay. Watch this." Maya said.

She kicked the vending machine.

Nothing happened.

"Huh! Also, ow!"

"Maya, if there's no good kids out here noticing us, then, what's the point?" Thomas asked.

She pulled him closer to her from the collar of his shirt.

"You questioning my leadership, Canadian Boy?" Maya asked.

"Okay, these names you're calling me are killing my street cred." Thomas muttered.

"Aw. And what would you like me to call you?"

"I'd like you to call me MadDog."

"You don't seem like a MadDog to me."

"What do I seem to like to you?"

"You know that lamb that Mary had?" Maya asked.

"I don't like the way that this is going." Thomas said.

She let him go.

"I think what MadDog is saying is what good is being bad if there's no other kind of people around?" Farkle said.

Maya grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.

"I'm Batman." He said.

They all heard wheels squeal and everyone duck down.

"Who's that?" Darby asked.

"I agree with MadDog and Batman. For me, it was very important for us to be among the good." Harley said.

"Why?" Maya asked.

"Because even the good kids, you may never find out what they are."

"You told us you were one of the bad kids when you were younger." Farkle said.

"Well, you know, I used to intimidate people. Make 'em see things my way." He said.

"Did they?" Thomas asked.

"For a while."

"What happened?" Maya asked.

"I met a good kid." Harley said.

"But you seem like such a nice guy. It's hard for me to think you ever intimidated anything." Thomas said.

"Oh, yeah?" Harley asked.

He walked up to the vending machine and touched it, all the drinks fall out he grabs one and walked away.

"Okay. Maybe he's right. Maybe we need a good kid around." Maya said.

"To find the good in us." Darby said.

"Yeah. Let's go steal some." Maya said.

They all walked back to the classroom.

Sophia and Lucas laughed the whole while.

They stopped when they heard the sounds of Duck, Duck, Goose.

"Without Maya and Sophia around, she's actually getting worse." Sarah said.

Sophia was pretty sure Riley wasn't okay.

The two of them stood up and stood next to the wall.

The next thing they heard was screaming.

Most likely from Maya's group.

"Wait!" Riley yelled, "Duck."

"What about Sophia?" She asked.

"Where is she?" Farkle asked.

"She over there with Lucas."

Riley pointed towards the wall.

"Leave her will be back." Maya said.

"Okay." She said.

"Let's do something. We're not gonna get out of here anytime soon."

Lucas looked at her.

"This is your town, tell me what's fun here."

She shrugged her shoulders.

"Oh, come on. You have something fun you do."

"No. Sorry."

He sighed.

"Fine. I have a game we can play."

She smiled, "Okay."

It wasn't a game per se it was more of Lucas teaching her how to square dance.

"You can't say that wasn't fun."

The two of them were laughing.

"Okay, it was fun, but I have no idea when I would even square dance."

"You'll never know."

Lucas smiled down at her.

Lucas bent down but a soft voice spoke.

"Sophia, you can knock the wall down now." Riley said.

"I had fun." Sophia said.

"So did I."

He was going to kiss her, again.

The two of them knocked the boxes down.

Sophia walked to her desk.

"You have fun?" They asked.

"I did. It was quite enjoyable. And you two?" Sophia asked.

"Someone had the idea to put me in a bag. Did you hear about that?" Riley asked.

"Really?"

"Well, you know, there's some bad kids out there." Maya said.

Mr. Matthews walked in.

"Okay, guys. Detention over."

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Remember how you told us that people change people?"

"Secret of life."

"Well, when you're not with those people, how do you keep from changing back?" Maya asked.

"You went a little wild, did you?" He asked Maya.

"Whatever I got is strong in me, Matthews." She said.

"Yeah, me too, but the other way." Riley said.

"Harley!" Mr. Matthews said.

"Right here." Harley said.

"You watched them?" He asked.

"Like a hawk."

"What?" Riley said.

"You're with him?" Sophia asked.

"Yeah. He's my good kid." He said.

"What do you got?" Matthews asked him.

"Everyone went nuts, except for Zippy, Sophia, and Lucas." He said.

"Why didn't you go nuts, Zippy?" He asked.

"I was without Maya and Sophia. Without them, I don't think I'd ever unfold my hands." Riley said.

"What about you Sophia?"

"Riley built a wall so I couldn't see her, I didn't have crazy or Zippy with me."

"What about this one here?" Mr. Matthews asked pointing to Maya.

"Maya was the ringleader. Maya was the first one out the door." He said.

"I was without Riley and Sophia. Without them, I may never come back." She said.

"Okay. Well, detention over, guys. Everyone out. Except Maya." Mr. Matthews said.

"Dad." Riley said.

"Everyone out." He said.

Everyone but Maya left the classroom and Riley and Sophia waited outside the door.

"Riley! Sophia!" Maya shouted.

"Right here." They said.

The two waited until Maya's detention was over.
