girl meets maya's mother
THE TRIO sat in art class mindlessly doing whatever, until Farkle walked in, Sophia completely ignored him until he said something.
He began to undo his robe.
"No!" They shouted.
"Well! Looky here. The male... physique." The teacher lady said.
Ever since Farkle came around he started calling the female teacher, teacher lady so Sophia just picked it up.
"Why thank you, art lady." He said.
"Why aren't we drawing Lucas?" Riley asked.
At this point, it was evident that Riley was head over heels in love with Lucas.
"Because nobody looks like that" The teacher said.
Sophia looked at Lucas.
It's been a while since the two even had an interaction with each other.
"Get used to this. Get used to this right now. When drawing a "Farkle", start with the eyes." She continued.
"I think the eyes should go straight to the gun show." Farkle said flexing his muscles.
Sophia looked over at Maya, who was working on Farkle in a bird's nest.
"Maya, you're supposed to concentrate on the eyes." Sophia told her.
"See, you know what my problem is? I don't listen. By the way, you're drawing Lucas." Maya said.
Sophia looked down at her paper and saw nothing but what she thought was Farkle.
She then looked over at Riley and she was most definitely drawing Lucas.
"Oh. Well, that's the first time I've ever done that." Riley said.
Sophia flipped through a couple of pages and saw more and more pictures of Lucas, it was kind of awkward.
"Do I need help?" She asked.
Maya and Sophia slowly nodded.
The teacher soon approached the three.
"All right, I know these are works in progress, but let's see where we are."
"Maybe we'll become famous artists. We'll go to Paris, drink coffee in outdoor. How do I look?" Riley asked her friends.
Sophia began singing a little tune and Maya drew Riley sitting in a café in Paris.
"Fine, make fun of me. I am a serious artist who belongs in Paris."
Lucas stood up and walked towards the others.
"Bonjour, Lucas." Riley said.
He started talking in French which none of them understood.
Sophia did take French but she wasn't understanding what he was saying.
"Bonjour, Lucas." She repeated.
He smiled at her and walked back to his seat.
The teacher gasped, "Oh my gosh."
"See? I am an artist. I am finally something." Riley said.
"Maya."
"What a life you're having." Sophia said speaking flat.
"Maya. My goodness." The teacher lady said showing off Maya's work to the class.
"This is brilliant!"
"Farkle is in a bird's nest." Riley said.
"It's a work of surrealism, Riley. It's how this artist's mind views the subject." The teacher told her.
"I'm a bird to you?" He asked Maya.
"No, you just... need to be protected."
"You love me."
"Leave me alone."
"Maya, there's a school exhibit coming up. I want one of your pieces in it." The teacher told Maya.
"What about my piece?" Riley asked.
The teacher looked at her drawing then back at her.
"That's a cute top."
"No thanks, Ms. Kossal, I don't draw for other people to look at, but thank you." Maya told her.
Sophia knew she was going to forget her name.
"I'd appreciate you thinking about it, okay?"
"Oh and.." She stopped and turned around.
"Me!" Riley said with a cheer in her voice.
"No, SophiaAnn, I would like it if you came and sung a song for the exhibit."
It creeped Sophia out when people asked her to sing.
It was different when the Matthews' asked.
"No, thanks I can't sing even if my life depended on it, but thanks for the offer Mrs. Fossal"
"Just think about please, and it's Kossal."
She cringed at herself, she knew she was going to forget.
Farkle stood from his seat and headed towards the exit.
"Where are you headed, Farkle?" Sophia asked.
"Gym class. That should go well, right?"
Sophia's Grandparents Home
"Hey Nana, where's Pocky at?"
Sophia knew they weird names for her grandparents but that's what they told her to call them so they don't feel old, their real names are Edith and Jameson.
"Resting"
These days, every day was resting day for her grandpa.
He wasn't getting any better.
"Okay, so I need a favor?"
"Yes."
Sophia shook her head, "You don't even know what I was gonna ask?"
"Yes, I do. Fourteen years of your life, I've been living for a long time I think I know everything."
She sighed, "Okay, what was I gonna say?"
"Do you want me to come to career day of your class tomorrow?"
"You're good."
"So how is this gonna work?"
"You're gonna walk in say your job answer questions and leave."
"That's simple, I'm gonna go get ready."
"You do that Nana."
The two stood up and headed towards their rooms.
Sophia probably had the worst room in the whole house.
She had holes in the wall and the roof started to leak.
She always put others before herself, so she gave her grandparents the better room.
What a life she was living.
History: Mr. Matthews
"All right, future history makers, welcome to career day. Now there are a lot of ways to make your mark on the world." Mr. Matthews said.
When he finished Topanga and Sophia's grandma came in.
"Hi, Riley." Mrs. Matthews said.
"Oh great, Shakira is here."
"Hello, Soph." Her Nana whispered.
That whisper was probably heard in the first two rows in the room.
"Hey."
"Soph." Lucas teased.
"Not now Friar."
It was a sensitive thing.
Sophia didn't remember much of her father but she did remember the nicknames.
It was the nickname her dad gave her when she was younger.
Her grandparents call her that ever so often but when they did it didn't bother her.
"Where's your mom?" Sophia asked Maya.
"She won't be coming."
"But she told you she was coming." Riley said.
"Yes, she did."
"Okay, guys, our first guest is Mrs. Edith Hopperfield."
Lived with her mother's parents.
Before her mom married, they were Hooperfield, she married and changed her last name to Hopeman.
"Hello, I'm Edith and I'm a baker, I work in a little place called Svorski's."
Sophia knew there wasn't much to being a baker, especially at Svorski's.
"Any questions?"
No one raised their hands.
Almost a blessing for Sophia.
"No, great because I really didn't want to answer questions."
Sophia knew her grandma was being sarcastic, hopefully, someone else did too.
"Okay, now, our second guest today is a lawyer, and I like her. Hey, lawyer lady, how's about we go out sometime? I get off work every day at three fifteen, except Tuesdays. I got playground." Mr. Matthews said.
Topanga smiled and faced the classroom.
"So I am an attorney. I got here through a lot of hard work in school. By the time I was your age, I had three hundred fifty As." She said, bragging.
Just then someone knocked on the back door.
"Your mom- There she is." Riley said.
Mr. Matthews opened the door and saw an older man standing there.
Mr. Matthews gasped, "Minkus."
"Topanga." Mr. Minkus replied.
"Stuart." She said.
"Topanga."
Mr. Minkus moved past Mr. Matthews and approached Farkle.
"Father."
"Farkle."
"Wait a minute." Lucas said.
Sophia looked back at him.
"Yes?" Farkle questioned.
"He's your father?"
"Look at us."
Mr. Minkus squatted down near Farkle and the two smiled.
"Your name is Farkle Minkus?"
"Don't wear it out."
He turned towards Sophia.
She smiled at him.
Lucas sighed, "I don't know how you could."
"Sorry I'm late, everybody. I had helicopter problems, 'cause I have a helicopter. Do you have a helicopter, Cory?" Mr. Minkus asked.
"Nope. Do you have a Topanga, Minkus?" He asked.
Sophia chuckled and quickly covered her mouth.
"Nope, because she chose you. I run Minkus International, I have a helicopter, and she chose you."
"Yep she chose him and they had a Riley and an Auggie" Sophia added.
"That my friend was clever." Mr. Matthews said.
The two of them fist-bumped.
"Stuart, please. Aren't we a little too evolved to still be competing with each other?" Topanga asked.
"Of course."
"Of course."
"Go." They said.
"Between the two of us, Riley and I have one thousand two hundred sixty A's. Ha!"
"That's remarkable, Topanga. Between the two of us, Farkle and I have on thousand two hundred sixty-one."
"Ha!" The father-son duo said.
Topanga looks at her husband, and if looks could kill.
"I- I had to, Topanga. He's a lot smarter than I am."
"But what's more important to me than anything... is that I have this guy. Come up here, son."
"Come up here, daughter. Look how tall she is. She's been taller than me since the day she was born."
Mr. Minkus pushed Farkle up some to match Riley's height.
Mr. Matthews sighed, "Well, very nice. Good for you guys. So this is what Career Day is really all about."
"Yeah, I love it every year." Maya said.
"I'm sorry, Maya. Maybe your mom just got a little busy." Sophia tried reassuring her.
"Are you okay?" Riley asked.
"I'm always okay."
Riley grabbed Maya and Sophia's hand and pulled her two best friends up to the front next to Mr. Minkus and Farkle.
"Yeah, thanks." Maya said.
"So these are the three ladies you tell me to keep chasing you, huh?" His father asked.
"Please." Farkle whispered.
"Yes sir, it is us." Riley said.
"I'm not doing it." Maya said.
But Riley elbowed her.
"Yes sir, it is us. We hope that one day one of us will be lucky enough to become the future Mrs. Farkle Minkus" She said.
"And have a lot of baby minkii." Sophia added.
Bay Window
"Why won't you show your art, and why won't you sing?" Riley questioned.
"Because I'm- I'm fine believing that nothing much is going to happen for me. Otherwise, I'm full of hope. You hope for things, you get disappointed." Maya said.
"Riley it isn't simple for us, I'm shy, and singing in front of others freaks me out, and the hope thing is kinda true, and my last name is Hopeman, hope is the first word. I lost hope a long time ago." Sophia explained.
She tried making a bad situation sound like fun.
It wasn't even helping.
"Sophia, you have a natural talent you can do anything, so can you Maya. What reason could your mom have for not showing up, Maya? You're right, I did expect her." Riley said.
"And I didn't. See? Only one of us is disappointed." Maya said.
"Disappointment is no fun." Sophia said.
"And only one of us will never let this go. You know that." Riley said.
"I don't expect out of life what you expect, Riley."
"What do I expect?" She asked.
"You expect... good things. You expect people to keep promises and people to show up." Sophia told her.
"You guys don't?"
"Riley I highly doubt you can even get my mom to come to see me sing she's all the way in L.A. she doesn't care about me, she has a new family. A family she will never leave."
Sophia used to be a firm believer in faith.
But she knew that her mother was happy having someone to love on.
She couldn't blame her for that.
"Riley, we're not one of those dreamers like you." Maya told her.
"If your mom saw your art, and your mom at least heard you sing, doesn't it make sense that she'd be proud of you?"
"Yeah, it makes sense to you. Riley, you need to be okay with this. Do you understand that finally, something is beyond your control?" Maya said.
"Look, I know you can't control your twisted need to fix people's lives." Sophia added.
She tried to fix Sophia's hair and Maya's jacket.
"We're begging you." Maya told her.
Riley fixed Sophia's skirt and tucks Maya's hair behind her ear.
History: Mr. Matthews
"The Korean War." Mr. Matthews.
"Genghis Khan." Farkle said.
"What?" Sophia asked him.
He smiled, "I just wanted to see what would happen."
Just then a lady wearing a waitress outfit came into the classroom.
Maya's mother.
"Hello, Cory Matthews. I am so sorry for interrupting." She said.
"Oh no." Maya said.
"Nothing to forgive, Katy. Class, this is Maya's mother, Katy Hart." He said.
Sophia looked at Maya then back at Katy.
She turned and saw Riley looking at her.
"Mom, what are you doing? It was yesterday." Maya muttered under her breath.
"Yesterday I was unable to attend your little job fair-"
Maya interrupted, "Career day."
"Yesterday I was trapped... in my vehicle... in the rushing floodwaters of the mighty Colorado river! To make matters worse, I just found out I was about to have a baby any second. So I crawled myself through the sunroof and I said, "Let's do this thing." Then I commenced to deliver my own baby until finally, I heard that wonderful, magical sound." She explained.
She looked up at the students and started to cry like a baby.
"Mama? Are you my mama?"
"Maya?" Riley and Sophia asked.
"Soap opera. She was auditioning for a soap opera." She told them.
"Can you believe I didn't get it?" Her mom asked.
"Yes!" The class answered.
"Yes. I am an actress. Are there any questions I can answer for anyone?"
Farkle raised his hand first.
"Ah, yes, the Farkle."
"Why are you wearing a waitress outfit?"
She looked around the room, completely dodging the question. Lucas raised his hand next.
"Yes, the pretty, young man right there."
"Yeah, thanks. Um, why are you wearing a waitress outfit?"
"My dad says actors are a bunch of people who never grew up." Sarah spoke up.
"What does your dad do?" Sophia asked.
"He's a director."
"Is he? Well, I'm sure your father never gave me a job either, which is the real reason I wear this outfit every day." She paused before continuing, "Well, I'll just be going now."
She didn't look back at Maya and walked out.
Sophia stood up grabbing at Riley's arm walked out of the classroom to talk to her.
"No, no, no. I shouldn't have come." She said after seeing the two.
"You did fine, you showed up." Sophia reassured.
"I showed up a day late. I couldn't even get that order right."
"I know that Maya appreciated the effort." Riley said.
Maya soon walked out into the hallway.
"Hi, mom."
"Hey, Maya."
"Could I ask you a favor?"
"Of course, anything."
"I think it works best for us when you go on your imaginary auditions and chase our imaginary father. I appreciate your coming, I do. And I'm not humiliated. I'm not. I'm- I'm okay. You okay?"
Her mom nodded her head.
"Good."
With that Maya walked away.
"Yeah, this is just how we are. For me to think any other way is just acting, and I'm not that good." Her mom said.
Art Room
Mrs. Kossal told the class that they were going to be drawing Riley.
"Drawing a woman's face is different than drawing a man's. Look for subtle differences. The lips are different." Mrs. Kossal said.
"No matter what, don't get mad at me, okay?" Riley started.
"We could never." Sophia said.
Sophia wasn't paying much attention to what Riley was even doing.
"To paint a young woman's lips, she needs to stop flapping them." Mrs. Kossal said.
"Because if I have any talent at all, it's this, so don't get mad at me."
"I could never." Maya repeated.
"Because when the mouth is moving, it will affect all the sketches. And they all come out like this."
She was holding a sketch of Riley with her mouth wide open
"Except for this one. You don't listen to a word I say, do you?" The teacher said speaking to Maya.
"Uh, it's not because I'm disrespectful." Maya said.
"It's because you're an artist. I'm glad you decided to display your work."
"You too Sophia I glad your singing"
"I got your notes in my teacher's box."
"That's the thing you're not supposed to get mad at." Riley said.
"The exhibit starts at six. It's thrilling seeing your art displayed, you won't regret it." Mrs. Kossal said walking out of the classroom.
As of now, it was only Maya, Sophia, and Riley in the room.
"You don't listen to a word we say, do you?" Sophia asked.
"I-It's not because I'm disrespectful. It's because you're an artist, and you're a singer"
"Yeah? Then let me paint you something. " Maya said.
Maya handed Sophia another paintbrush and the two splashed green paint on Riley's face.
"Okay. I am your best friend and I will always do my best for you, no matter what you... say." She said throwing red paint in their face.
"And how made you the king of friendship?" Sophia asked.
That's when Sophia threw paint on her.
"I did, I made myself the king of friendship. And this would be my first act as a king." She said.
She grabbed some red paint with her hands and covered their face with red paint.
"Why won't you leave this alone?!" Maya asked.
Paint when flying between three.
"I don't know how!" She said.
They heard the door creaked open and Mrs. Kossal walked in.
"Whoa! Riley... This is the most authentic piece you've done all semester. Now clean it up. See you tonight, Maya, you too Sophia."
With that, she left.
"One other thing-I invited both of your moms."
Maya walked over to get some paint and handed Sophia.
She tilted the can back and the paint went all over Riley.
Art Exhibit
Maya was standing by her painting at the Art Exhibit. While Sophia was getting ready to sing.
"Excuse me but before we start the Art Exhibit, can we please listen to the singing styles of SophiaAnn Hopeman." Mrs. Kossal said.
Sophia was most definitely nervous but she was gonna do it because Riley invited her mother.
Sophia knew that her mother was not going to come and watch her sing.
( sings whatever song y'all like )
Once she finished singing Riley came up to me.
"You were amazing up there."
"Thank you, Riley."
The two of them walked up to Maya and her painting.
"How's it going?" She asked Maya,
"It's going fine, what does your mom think of your singing." Maya asked.
"What does your mom think of your art?" Sophia asked.
"They never showed up?" Riley asked.
"It's just you guys." Maya told her.
"Are you telling me neither of your mothers never showed up?" Riley asked.
"Riley my mom is halfway across the world right now with her new family she wouldn't show up even if she was paid to." Sophia said.
She stopped asking her mother for things before middle school even started.
"But of course you did." Maya said pointing to Cory and Topanga.
"Sophia you were amazing up there. Maya. Wow, you really have some talent. Look at that place." Topanga said.
"I bet it's got great mashed potatoes." Mr. Matthews growled.
"Look at that lady, why can you only see half of her?" Farkle asked.
Lucas wrapped his arms around Farkle's whole face.
He realized why it was the way it was.
"Oh."
Sophia saw Riley leave, she followed after but Lucas grabbed her arm.
"Cowboy."
He smiled, "Hey."
"What can I help you with?"
"Why did Farkle kiss you?"
Lucas is a straight-to-the-point guy, isn't he?
But she knew what he was talking about.
"I don't know."
He was hesitant before responding, "Okay then, can I tell you something?"
"Anything Friar."
"So there's this girl and I like her a lot but her best friend likes me too what should I do?"
She was almost conflicted with her answer.
"Go with what your heart tells you, Lucas."
"Okay, thanks."
Then he walked away. It was already too late for her to find Riley so she turned back around to head inside.
Lucas came back towards Sophia.
"Sophia?"
"Yes?"
"I really like-"
He didn't get to finish because Riley came back, grabbed Sophia's arm, and pulled her back inside the classroom.
"You guys really don't have to stay." The two girls heard Amaya say.
"Are you kidding? We love supporting the middle school art scene." Mr. Matthews said.
"Yeah, we even bought a drawing. You have to wonder who this silly, little weirdo is." She said holding a drawing of Riley.
Riley opened her mouth really wide then closed it.
"Aw... It's our silly, little weirdo."
"Thank you for staying with Maya and Sophia." Riley told her parents.
"Always." Mr. Matthews smiled.
Her parents walked away and the two walked up to Maya.
"I couldn't get them to come and I'm very disappointed." Riley told her friends.
"I know, you expect too much." Sophia said.
"This is hard on me." She said.
"You need a hug, darling?" Maya asked.
Maya pulled Riley and Sophia into a hug.
Riley let go and sighed, "Maya, Sophia, I was wrong."
"No, Riley, you were right." Sophia reassured.
"I'm very confused."
"I showed my work, and Sophia sang. People liked it. It made us feel like we could be something someday." Maya told her.
"You will be. You are now." Riley said.
Maya and Sophia thanked her, "Thank you, Riley."
"You're welcome. Do you want a third of a tuna melt?" She asked.
"You know why she gave this to you?" Maya asked.
"Why?"
"She knows it's my favorite thing there. She knew that you'd share with us."
"We'd be happy to give you the whole thing." Sophia said.
"I know you would. I'll be just fine with a third.
Matthews' Residents
Maya, Farkle, and Mr. Minkus, and Sophia sat down with the Matthews' for dinner.
"And Riley... for your excellence in your display of unwavering hope for others, I'm giving you an 'A'." His father told her.
"Ha!"
"What?" Farkle's father exclaimed.
"Can he do that?" Farkle asked.
"No, you can't do that." His father said.
"I do whatever she wants." Mr. Matthews said.
"Yeah, so would I." Mr. Minkus said.
Riley smiles, "I come from a very talented family."
"What am I talented at?" Auggie asked.
"You're gonna find it someday, honey." His mother said.
Auggie stood up and starts singing a song and when he finished they all clapped for him.
Svorski's
( a/n im sorry for this fifteen year old me was going through something )
Sophia sat down on a stool, waiting for her grandmother's shift to be over.
"Ten more minutes, then we can go." She said.
She was holding someone's cupcake.
"Alright."
All you could really hear where small conversation being had by various people.
"Fia"
She turned around seeing Lucas behind her.
"Don't call me that." She quickly said.
"Why not... Soph."
Now he's doing this on purpose. She didn't even know what the reason was for.
"Lucas, this isn't the time."
"How come I can't call you Soph."
Sophia stood up from the stood trying to make her way outside.
She huffed and turned around seeing that Lucas was following behind her.
"You wanna know why you can't call me that?"
"Yes, yes I do"
"When I was younger my father called me Soph because I could never say my own name, my fifth birthday party was the same day my father was supposed to come home, I was a gift from my Nana and Pocky. I was sitting on the couch with my Nana when the news came on and said twelve people died on a flight to New York, they weren't even out of this place in Europe. The pictures came on the screen and my father was one of those twelve people. He died on my birthday, he called me Soph. So Lucas, don't call me Soph anymore." She said.
She didn't yell at him, she wasn't even that mad at him.
He didn't know and she couldn't blame him for that.
She was hated telling the story over and over.
She felt his hand touch her face, wiping away the tears.
Her grandmother cane outside, seeing her granddaughter with tears rolling down her face.
She quickly walked over there, taking Sophia away from Lucas.
He felt bad, so there he was worried about Sophia and not knowing what to do with himself.
