girl meets friendship
"THE FOLLOWING is a campaign commercial brought to you by the-" Maya started.
Riley came into the room on a horse, "Imagine your education in a magical kingdom and unicorns roam the halls. Say goodbye to too much studying. Say goodbye to meddling teachers."
"But, Riley, I'm your fa..." Mr. Matthews started.
But he vanished.
"A vote for me is a vote to live happily ever after. I am princess Riley Matthews and I approveth this messageth."
Sophia and Maya walked into the room.
"The campaign of Riley Matthews is not responsible for anyone who thinks a horse is a unicorn." Sophia said.
Maya cooed, "No, we're not."
History: Mr. Matthews
"Democracy. Our form of government where the power lies with the people. So who here can tell me another form of government where the power doesn't lie with the people?" Mr. Maththews asked.
Farkle raised his hand.
"Farkle!"
"Thank you, sir. Dictators. Love 'em. They get to do whatever they want. I wanna be one someday."
Farkle stopped when Lucas walked into the classroom.
"Mr. Friar!" Mr. Matthews shouted.
"Sorry for being late, sir. My flight was delayed."
He smiled at Sophia as he headed to his seat.
"You went back to Texas again this weekend?" Sophia asked.
He continued to smile, "Visited my friends."
"He misses his old friends. Aww." Maya said.
"Cowboy's got the blues." Thomas said.
Maya began to sing, "Campfire for one, My friends are all cows, And I miss 'em, Ha-hur, ha-hur-hur... ,"
Lucas pulled out a harmonica and started playing it.
"Ha-hur..." She finished singing, "I will never get to you, will I?"
"No, but I sure do appreciate the effort." He tipped his imaginary hat.
"Ooh!"
"Okay, guys, seventh-grade student council elections are coming up." Mr. Matthews said.
The entire class groaned, except for Thomas and Farkle.
"Yay."
"Why that?" He asked.
"Because every year somebody runs, makes promises and nobody does anything." Riley said.
"Yeah. What lunkhead's running the elections this year?" Sophia asked.
Mr. Matthews approached her desk, "How ya doing?"
She smiled.
"Can't you just make a change?" Maya asked.
"You know what? It's up to you guys to make changes. Since we're studying alternate forms of government this year, why not let the candidates run in any form of government they choose?" Mr. Matthews asked.
Classes groaned, boys cheered, like usual.
"So any nominations?" Mr. Matthews asked.
Farkle raised his hand, "I, Farkle, nominate I, Farkle, for dictator."
"You can't nominate yourself, Farkle." Mr. Matthews told him.
"I'll nominate him." Thomas and Lucas together.
"Really?" Farkle asked.
"Yeah. I like ya. I got your back." Thomas said.
"I thought you had my back." Farkle said looking at Lucas.
"I got his back."
"Whoa, easy there, harmonica." Thomas said.
"Friar. Represent democracy." Mr. Matthews said.
"I don't know, Mr. Matthews. If democracy worked, maybe I'd have gotten a vote on where I get to live." He said.
It not only confused Sophia, but his other friends as well.
Sophia raised her hand, "I nominate Lucas Friar for president."
"Okay. Second?" He asked.
She just kept her hand up.
"No, Sophia, you nominated him. You can't second the nominati-"
She wasn't budging.
"All right, fine." He said.
Maya looked back at her.
"What are you doing? He's your competition." Maya said.
"I'm not running for anything. Riley is."
Sophia definitely didn't have the skillset to have the whole grade be ran under her watch.
"I got plans for you." Maya told Riley.
"You know what? It'd be an honor to run for president. Thank you, Sophia." Lucas said.
She smiled, "My pleasure, buddy."
She wasn't helping herself whatsoever.
"I don't know how it happens." Riley said, "I wanna be a princess."
"Listen to me-" Maya started.
"No! You listen to me. I'm twelve years old. The window is closing on my princess dream. And I ain't winning any pageants until I grow into these limbs. Princess is all I have." Riley snapped.
"Get it for me." She said.
"As you wish, m'lady." Sophia said.
"Yay."
Gym
"Everybody deserves the right to vote. Because if that right is taken away you know what you get?" Maya said.
Farkle had a whole getup.
"I am Farkle! And these are the dictatorettes." He said.
His dictatorettes consisted of Sarah and Darby.
"They are part of the new Farkle nation. How would you like to be part of the new Farkle nation?!" He asked.
"Meh."
"Nobody's buying, Farkle." Sophia said.
"Nobody wants you for dictator." Maya said.
"I was afraid something like this would happen. But the genius that I am, I have a plan." He smiled.
He pulled out two t-shirt cannons.
"I got an Uncle Morty in the t-shirt business." Thomas said, "Who will become part of Farkle nation for a free t-shirt?!"
"Yeah!" The crowd shouted.
"Dictatorettes, give the peoples what they want."
T-shirts went flying.
"Uh-oh." Riley muttered.
"Instead of learning on books, we should learn on tablets. The whole world will be at our fingertips. Instead of reading about Spain, we hit a button and we go there! Ole!" He said and the crowd cheered louder.
Sophia walked towards Thomas.
"What you doing?" She asked.
"I'm trying to address the issues." Thomas said.
He grabbed her hands in the process.
He didn't even realize that he had done it.
Sophia quickly let them go.
"Nobody cares about the issues, Thomas." Farkle said, "They only care about who's having the most fun. Farkle nation!"
"Farkle nation!" The crowd shouted.
"Holy moley. I got me an army." Farkle said.
"He's got him an army." Thomas said.
"I need me a kingdom. I'm not princess enough yet, am I?" Riley asked.
"No, honey, you're not." Maya said.
"Farkle nation!" Farkle and Thomas shouted.
"Farkle nation, Farkle nation, Farkle nation, Farkle nation, Farkle nation, Farkle nation..."
The cheers descended down the hall.
"What do I need to be princess enough?" Riley asked.
"You need a unicorn." Sophia said.
"You'll get that for me?" She asked.
"Yeah. I know a guy."
She knew where she could get a horse and a cone.
Riley's Room
"What horse?"
They were brushing the horses mane.
"I was up again with Auggie last night. I'm very tired." Mrs. Matthews said, "Cory, we need bread."
"I wanted you to have my princess hat from when I rallied against gender stereotypes. I was going to light it on fire, but... It's too pretty. Good luck to you. Bye, honey." Mrs. Matthews said.
History: Mr. Matthews
"A vote for me is a vote to live happily ever after. I am princess Riley Matthews and I approveth this messageth." Riley said on the tv screen.
Sophia smiled, "The campaign of Riley Matthews is not responsible for anyone who thinks a horse is a unicorn."
"Well, America's always held a special place in its heart for princesses. Perhaps Riley will be the first one ever voted in." Mr. Matthews said.
"Not after everyone sees Farkle's commercial." Thomas said.
"Play it, sheepshead." Farkle said talking to Mr. Matthews.
"Sheephead?" He asked.
Farkle pulled out a t-shirt and waved it in the air.
"T-shirt? Ooh! Free stuff." Mr. Matthews said playing Farkle's video.
"Good evening, Farkle nation. It is I, your benevolent dictator. As you can see, I am kind to all the creatures of Farkle nation. Our animal friends need room to roam free, but my opponent Riley Matthews feels the proper place for a horse of her New York apartment bedroom."
Sophia looked back at Farkle.
"You told me you were just gonna take a picture of the horse."
He smiled, "I want to win."
"But you lied to me."
"That's what dictators do." He said with that smile on his face.
"Farkle, don't even talk to me." Sophia said.
She didn't like being lied to and Farkle knew that.
"Sophia, I-"
"Okay, this campaign just got dirty." Maya said.
"Yay." Riley cheered.
"Team princess needs to strike back hard." Sophia said.
"Fine. The truth is- that horse had a dream. All that horse ever wanted was to be a unicorn, and I made that dream come true. That horse loves me!" Riley said and the crowd starting clapping.
"Whoo! It is amazing what people will believe." Maya said.
"He spies on us, he'll spy on all of you!" Sophia said.
"I bet there are cameras on all of you right now." Maya said.
"What you have to decide is if you want to live in a magical kingdom or a police state." Riley said looking a Farkle.
"Hey, cut it out! Friends don't attack each other. No going after Farkle." Lucas said.
"Okay, moral compass, I promise we won't go after Farkle." Sophia told him.
"Good. Thank you." He said the bell rings and everyone leaves expect Maya, Riley, and Sophia.
"We're going after Lucas." Maya said once everyone was gone.
"Why?" Sophia asked.
"Farkle's nothing without his army." She said, "Lucas is the competition now."
"I'm not attacking Lucas." Sophia said.
"You don't have to do anything." Riley said.
"No."
Sophia headed towards the door.
"Sophia, you know everything about him this is Riley's last chance to be a princess." Maya said.
"Everybody's got something they're hiding." Riley said.
"Even Lucas. I'm gonna find out what it is." Maya said.
"Maya, if you do-" Sophia cut herself off.
"Yeah?"
"...Don't tell me."
Hallway
"Hey, huckleberry." Maya greeted.
"Hi, Lucas." Riley said.
Sophia only smiled.
"Excuse me. I'm dealing with something personal."
He walked towards the door, but was still close in range to be able to him his conversation.
"Hello. I don't understand why I can't go back this weekend, sir. No, I'm not trying to argue, but this isn't my home." He said.
Sophia's smile was wiped away.
"Texas is my home. But, Dad, you told me I'd be able to see my friends on weekends if I wanted and I want to see my friends. Yes, I have friends here. Right now we're all trying to destroy each other. I'm sorry too, sir, but I was the one who didn't want to come to this school in the first place." He said.
Sophia was upset, all three of them were.
"I have to go now." He said.
"I suppose you guys will be using that against me." He said.
"I would never." Sophia told him.
"Quiet, princess. What, that you don't want to be in our class?"
"How could that hurt you, running for president of our class?" She said.
"Don't worry. It's only her word against yours." Sophia reassured.
"Unless she has some kind of, like, electronic listening device and..." Riley said.
"Oh, look at that! Boopity beep boop bop bing!" Maya said.
"I'm sorry too, sir, but I was the one who didn't want to come to this school in the first place." The recording said.
He looked at Sophia and walked away.
"Maya, get rid of it." Riley said.
"Riley, we got him." She said, "You want to be a princess? We got him."
"I know exactly what we're gonna do." Sophia said.
"So do I." Maya said.
Janitors Closet
"Why do we have to do this we've got him right here! He can lose and Riley can be the princess." Maya said.
"Shhh it's ringing." Sophia hushed.
She wanted to at least give Lucas the opportunity to see his friends.
After a while, the boy finally picked up.
"Hey, is this Asher Garcia." She asked.
"Yes, and may I wonder who are you, pretty lady."
"I'm Sophia Hopeman, I was wondering if you can do me a favor."
"Depends."
"It has to do with Lucas Friar."
"Did she say, Lucas Friar?" Another voice said.
"Yes, she did." Riley said.
"I'll do anything for Lucas."
"So would I." Sophia smiled.
"Pretty smile." He said.
"Thanks, so can you do this for me?"
"Of course what do you want me to do."
With that Sophia knew that this was gonna work.
Gym
"And now the moment you've been waiting for. Dictatorship versus monarchy versus democracy. Which form of government have you chosen? The winner and new leader of the seventh grade of John Quincy Adams middle school is..." Mr. Matthews was cut off by the three girls.
"Hold on!" Sophia said.
"Not now, Sophia." Mr. Matthews said.
"It has to be right now, Dad." Riley said.
"We have one more very important campaign commercial that everybody needs to see." Sophia said.
"Girls, we've already seen the campaign commercials. The votes are in. This isn't gonna change anything." Mr. Matthews said.
"Yes, it will." Maya said.
"This isn't about the votes. It's about Lucas." Sophia said.
"Did you know about this, Mr. Friar? Is this okay with you?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Yeah, I know about it. If this is the kind of friends they want to be... It's okay with me." He said.
"Yeah, this is the kind of friends we want to be." Sophia said.
Soon enough both Asher and Dylan were on screen.
"Hey, my name's Asher Garcia. I've known Lucas Friar just about all my life."
Sophia looked over at him and he was smiling.
"I'm here to endorse him for your seventh-grade president."
"I'm Dylan Orlando. How you doing, bud? Looks like you made some new friends."
"They thought it was important we recorded this for you. Is there really a... Farkle?"
"And, Lucas, after Sophia, Riley and Maya went out of their way to find us, and we got to know them a little, I think we can endorse them too."
"Yeah, I approve that message."
"I second that."
The video was over, Sophia was proud of herself.
For one it took her forty-five minutes to find Asher and second Lucas looked really happy.
"I don't wanna be dictator anymore." Farkle said, "Dictators don't have any friends."
"I'm sorry I overreacted about you lying." Sophia told him.
"I'm sorry for lying to you. Friends?" He questioned.
"The best."
The two of them hugged.
But he still sat beside Riley.
"Thank you for the video. That wasn't what I expected to see." He said.
"No more going home for the weekends?" Sophia asked.
"I am home." He said.
After The Winners Are Announced
Lucas won the presidency and he felt proud, at least he told Sophia.
"Hey, Mr.Matthews, I'd like to name Farkle my vice president." Lucas said.
"You're kidding." He said.
"You mean if something terrible happened to you, I'd be president?" Farkle asked.
"Mm-hmm." Lucas muttered.
"I accept." He said walking towards the others.
"Maya, Thomas I'd like you two to be my secretary of state." He said.
"I'm nobody's secretary, Ranger Rick." Maya said.
"Hey, Hart." Thomas said.
"What?"
"Secretary of State is the president's ambassador to the world." Thomas said.
"It also means he's trying to get you out of the country." Riley said.
"Riley I'd like you just to dance and be the best dance there is." He said making her smile.
"Wait a minute." Sophia said.
He had already walked out the gym.
"What about me?" Sophia asked.
He came back in. He was on the horse
"You? What about you?"
"What am I to you?" She asked.
"What are you to me? To me You're a princess." He said putting the princess hat on her.
He helped her get on the horse.
"Look at us." She smiled
