Chpt 26: The Sharma Sisters
"Right now?!" i exclaimed. "Yes, i left the Sharma's on their own to come fetch you so i would suggest you hurry up!" Lady Danbury said. I looked at Emma who pushed me up the stairs.
I grabbed all my nice dresses and some books. As i was about to leave, i stopped as i saw my painting supplies on my desk. I haven't painted in over a year. I had no inspiration. I always said "i paint things that wanted to be painted" but since Beth passed, everything seems bleak and bland.
I hesitated but decided not to take my art supplies. I hopped down the stairs and i saw Emma with a bright smile on her face. "You look immensely more cheerful than you were last time you left" Emma said taking my bag.
"Well, now i know what i'm dealing with. And, i won't be on my own" i said. Emma became concerned as she saw my smile fade. "What?" Emma questioned. "Do... Do you think they will like me?" i asked. "Who? The family Lady Danbury's sponsoring?" Emma asked.
I nodded my head. "Of course they'll like you, they'd be fools not to! And, Lady Danbury happened to mention that the family has quite a rebellious past, so you'll be sure to like them" Emma said reassuringly as she put her arm in mine.
As we made our way out to the carriage, i put my bag in the back and turned around to face Emma. "Will you be alright on you own? I feel as if... As if i am abandoning you" i said looking down at the ground.
"Abandoning me? You could never! Just, please take care of yourself. And if anything happens or you want to come home, you call for me immediately and i'll come to get you, alright?" Emma said worriedly. I chuckled lightly and nodded my head. I embraced her tightly and then made my way into the carriage.
"Wait!" Emma exclaimed. I saw Emma run inside and she ran back out with a small leather bag. "You almost forgot your art supplies, just incase you know, you find some inspiration" Emma said with a cheeky smirk. I rolled my eyes and took the bag from her.
As we left the farm, i felt a wave of tranquility come over me. This time was not like the last. I was glad to finally leave the dreary old farm. Even though i did feel bad for leaving Emma, i promised myself i would make more of an effort to see her.
When we arrived at Lady Danbury's house, it felt as if i had never left. The house looked the exact same. A smile crept onto my face as Lady Danbury put her arm in mine and we made our way inside.
"Now, you will be staying in the same room as you were last time and the Sharmas will be staying in the rooms next to yours" Lady Danbury said guiding me into the drawing room.
When we got inside, i saw two women standing in front of the fire place. The young girl had white blossoms in her neat hair, a pink, gorgeous gown and i noticed that she was standing up straight. The woman next to her is who i presumed to be her mother.
"Lady Mary" Lady Danbury said announcing her presence. "Lady Danbury, oh how delightful it is to see you" the woman said with a bright smile. "And you must be Miss Bennet. Lady Danbury wrote lots of nice things about you" the woman said.
"After all these years! You look well" Lady Danbury exclaimed. "Allow me to introduce my youngest, Miss Edwina Sharma" the woman said. Edwina took a bow. "A true pleasure, Lady Danbury. I am so grateful for your hospitality. And Miss Bennet, it's lovely to make your acquaintance" Edwina said with a soft smile.
"And you Miss Sharma. I must say your hair is stunning" i replied. "Now, i was expecting another?" Lady Danbury questioned. "Yes my eldest... Kate" Lady Mary said awkwardly looking at Edwina.
"Well, she did get off the ship with you last night, did she not?" Lady Danbury asked jokingly with an awkward laugh.
"Apologies, i hope i did not keep you waiting long. The gardens here are so lovely After such a lengthy journey, i found that i wanted some freshness and morning air. But uh... I am here now" Kate said walking through the door.
"Well, now that we have all arrived-" Lady Danbury started. "Almost" Kate said abruptly. "I beg your pardon?" Lady Danbury asked. "There is also Newton. Is he still upstairs?" Kate said with a smirk. I looked at Lady Danbury who was just as confused as i was.
Kate ran upstairs and returned with a small, chubby corgi. "Oh my god! What an adorable little thing" i said running over to rub him. "I've always wanted a pet dog but my sister said dogs are just used for hunting and herding cattle" i said.
"Well Newton does everything but that" Kate said sarcastically. We all sat down and i saw Lady Danbury looking at the dog in disgust.
"Mama tells us you host the first ball of every season, Lady Danbury" Edwina said trying to start conversation. "Yes, I have appropriated a conservatory for this year's festivities" Lady Danbury relied.
"Did you hear that Edwina?" Kate said to Edwina who let out a small chuckle. "Well that sounds delightful! I've heard you have been to one of these balls before Miss Bennet. Are they all that they are cracked up to be?" Edwina asked.
I chuckled loudly with a snort. Everyone looked at me with a judgmental look. I coughed and straighten up. "They... Are indeed. Not boring at all" i said sipping my tea as to avoid any awkwardness.
Kate looked at me with a amused look. "Well it will make for a most spectacular entrance to society indeed. I cannot tell you how eager the young ladies are for the upcoming season" Lady Mary said saving me from the awkward silence.
"As am i. I would've ensured their presentation to her Majesty the Queen, but i thought it wise for me to examine their deportment, prior to their fort engagement. Her Majesty is most discerning, you understand" Lady Danbury said.
I saw Lady Mary grow more and more uncomfortable when Lady Danbury mentioned the queen. I remembered what Emma said about Lady Danbury mentioning that the family had a rebellious past. It must have been something very scandalous if the queen was involved.
"So her Majesty will be in attendance then, at the ball?" Lady Mary said is dismay. "Well there is no reason for concern Lady Mary. You will be with me, after all. Miss Bennet can assure you, having me at your side, no one will dare to utter a word of gossip about you or your family" Lady Danbury said turning to me.
I nodded. "Of course" Lady Mary said sipping her tea. "Well, stand up. Three of you. I want to see if you have forgotten what i taught you Miss Bennet" Lady Danbury said.
Three of us stood up at the top of the room. Lady Danbury circled us as we stood up as straight as we could. "Exceptional posture! Beautiful smiles" Lady Danbury said still circling us.
"The age of the elder miss may raise concern. Any suitable gentleman will require some persuading, whether we like it or not, as she will already be regarded as an old maid at the mature age of?" Lady Danbury asked gesturing Kate to say her age.
"Six and twenty, ma'am. But it should truly be of no concern, as i assure you i am not here to find a husband for myself, only for my sister, who indeed stands quite tall and smiles rather exquisitely. Even more so when she speaks French i rather think" Kate replied giving Edwina a wink.
I could tell Kate cared deeply for her sister. Their relationship reminded me of Emma and i. Kate continued to brag about her sisters talents and accomplishments until Lady Danbury was left satisfied.
When we were all finished talking, i made my way upstairs and unpacked all my things in my room. My room hadn't changed a bit. I decided to go look venture around the house to see all the rooms i had missed.
As i was walking, i saw the room Beth slept in. I stood in front of the door and i felt a heavy feeling on my heart. I walked inside and saw Miss Edwina reading a book on the bed.
"I am so sorry, i did not think anyone was in here. I shall leave" i said hastily leaving the room. "No it is quite alright, stay" Edwina said with a reassuring smile.
I slowly shut the door and looked around the room. As i saw Edwina sitting on the bed, i instantly got flashback to the last time i saw Beth.
"Are you... Are you alright?" Edwina asked. I realised i must have been staring. "Oh, yes sorry i just... I remember this room from when i stayed here last season" i replied. "Oh yes, Lady Danbury mentioned you were here last season. I'm guessing you didn't meet anyone?" she said.
I rolled my shoulders back uncomfortably. "Em... No i... I didn't" i said with a fake smile. "I'm hoping the suitors won't be too dull this season" she said with a chuckle.
I gave her a half smile back and she noticed me getting more and more uncomfortable. "Are you sure your alright?" she asked again. "I am, truly. You will enjoy the season by the way. I'm sure of it. Even though i did not come away with a suitor last year, i came back with lots of terrific friends" i replied.
"Well, this season you have just made one more" Edwina said standing up and taking my hand. I gave her a bright smile. "Now, can you please help me pick out a gown for the ball. I don't know if i should wear my lilac dress or my pink one?" she asked.
"Pink. Definitely pink. It's very much your colour" i replied. She gave me a bright smile as she ran over to grab her dress. I suddenly felt less alone in the house. I took a deep breath in and walked over to help Edwina with her dress.
"This one would look perfect on you" she said pulling out a dark, emerald dress. "It brings out your eyes" she said. I grabbed the dress and looked in the mirror.
"Tonight will be good... Right?" i said looking at Edwina. "Well, i sure hope so" she replied.
