Prologue
All in the name of family, that's what got Mandy in this position, she's gotten into amuck by her mother's poor choices now she must fix them once again. And orientation, the promise Mandy got the job, is how she intends to fix the mistake her mother has made. Does she want the job? No. Does she really need it? Yes. As a teenager, with parents who don't know if they're coming or going and aren't stable financially or mentally, she needed the job. She has two brothers to think about and her future. She sat in the office prepared for preparation of what she'll be doing from this day forward.
She sat in Clary Fell's office, uncomfortable and full of anxiety. Mandy's still in high school, yet here she was, taking more time. She doesn't have to work a job to ensure she has what she needs if her stepdad ever held up the threat he constantly uses against her mother. It's difficult, but it's what the cards she was delt in life, so she tried to play them reasonably.
The door opened, and Mandy closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Hey, Amanda, I'm so sorry to keep you waiting." Mandy flinched at being called Amanda. It wasn't her favorite name since it was used when she was in trouble.
She turned her head to Clary, who walked past her and smiled. "It's fine, Clary, I'm a patient person. But please call me Mandy. Only my parents called me Amanda." Clary looked at her and then to her vest across the room with the name Amanda on it.
She smiled sheepishly and changed her direction towards her vest. "I'll make a note of that, and I'll change the name on your vest. However, other than that, Mandy, you're ready to work." She nodded, not believing those words.
Clary sat down at her desk, and she picked off the name tag she originally printed with her legal name. The door opened and in came someone unfamiliar to Mandy, but everything about this was unfamiliar. "Hey Clary, is this the recruit?" Mandy looked over to see a stunning woman. She's fit, blonde, and blue eyed, unlike Mandy, who was plus sized, brunette, but blue eyed.
Mandy cleared her throat and gave a slight head tilt. "Yeah, I'm Mandy." The new woman smiled and held out her hand to Mandy. She took the hand and shook it.
Clary looked between the two, sensing something about the pair. "Mandy, this is Sam, your department couch. She'll get on you about training when need it needs done." Mandy looked over at Clary and nodded.
Sam sat down in a chair and crossed her arms, looking between Clary and Mandy. "So, Mandy, can you tell me about yourself? I'm interested in getting to knowing the people in my department." Mandy thought about what she'd say. There's not much she could say that results in conflict at home.
She bit the inside of her cheek, and she considered her response. "Well, I'm 17 and still obviously in high school. I'm homeschooled though, mostly due to bullying. I have two younger brothers whom I adore even though sometimes I'd like to smack them around. Occasionally I like to play games, and I'm an avid reader, I identify as a bibliophile. Also, I'm an aspiring musician." Sam smiled at her small introduction and tilted her head. Mandy, biting the inside of her cheek, didn't go unnoticed by both Clary and Sam. The two share a quick glance at the reaction to the question.
She nodded, and Clary tilted her head since she didn't know that. "Do you play an instrument?" Mandy nodded as she moved her right hand towards her left to play with her ring to ease her nerves. Sam once again noticed Mandy's actions, and it made her question if Mandy's okay, or if it's just nerves from the sudden change.
Mandy nodded as a quick response to Sam's question but elaborated more. "Yes, Ma'am I do, I play the guitar. I can't sing, though." Sam laughed when she was called Ma'am. Clary looked down, smiling as she fixed her mistake on her badge.
Mandy heard something drop, making a loud echo outside the office, and Sam looked too, but looked back at the new employee. "Well, you don't have to call me Ma'am. You can call me Sam, like everyone else. I find it impressive you're working here, and I'm happy to work with you!" Mandy smiled at her politeness.
She's thin, beautiful, and nice. That's everything. She wants to be yes. Yes, she's nice, but she can't say the first thing. She's 289 pounds at 17. She nodded at Sam's words and looked back to the hall when she heard footsteps. Mandy cleared her throat as she looked back to Clary, who finished fixing her badge.
She inhaled and bit the inside of her cheek as she thought about questions she might have. "Alright, I fixed your badge, and you have your file with the information you'll need for work—questions?" Mandy gave a small laugh at the question.
She twisted her ring around as she looked down at her Walmart vest. "You seemed to read my mind." She ran through her mind once more, seeing if she had any more questions. "I can't think of any right now, but if I come up with any, I'll stop by." She smiled, hiding her true thoughts that might cause more harm.
Clary stood up and held out her hand, which made Mandy do something similar. "Welcome to the team, Mandy."
Mandy shook Clary's hand and looked at Sam. "I'm glad to be here."
Sam stood up and walked towards the row of computers on the other side of the room. "If you follow me, I'll take you to the next part of your journey." Mandy nodded and quickly grabbed her things.
As she sat and logged in to do the proper training that's required to work on the premises, she quietly bid her last goodbyes to what peace she once had. As she started working, everything that ran through her mind was the chaos that was a familiar feeling, and a new sense of anxiety knowing what's she's doing right now won't be good for her. But it'll be fine, it's all in the name of family.
