Where Have You Been?
"Isn't it exciting, Max?" David chimed as the two stood the at the camp gate holding a banner that said 'Welcome Campers!'. "A new summer to make new memories!"
"Not really." Max said rolling his eyes. But truth be told he was low-key excited to see Nikki and Neil again. The three had been communicating online but it wasn't the same.
"Aw come on Max! Don't be such a grump!" David said patting the cynical boy on his he's and messing with his hair.
"Fucking stop doing that!" Max growled, batting away his adopted fathers hand and fixing his hair.
David was about to berate Max about his language (though it was a lost cause) when the sound of tires caught both of their attention.
A silver Chevy cobalt stopped and the engine shut off. The driver door opened and out stepped a woman a few feet taller than Max. She had Brown hair that hung to her shoulders and her bangs were parted to the right. She had aqua eyes similar to Max's but a few shades lighter
"Are you guys still looking for a counsler?" She asked sweetly, her voice sounded like she had been living in Europe for the past two years. "I have a list of references that can vouch for me."
"We sure are! The name's David! And you are?" David said dropping his half of the banner.
"Roxanna." The girl smiled coming around from her side of the car. She was dressed in a pair of ripped black cut off shorts, a white Nirvana tank top, with a colorful patterned hooded cardigan overtop. She wore olive green knee high socks and a pair of dark green hiking boots with Brown buckles and laces.
"Roxy?!" Max asked with disbelief. His eyes wide.
Roxanna looked over and smiled wider. "Hey Maxie!" She cooed. "Long time no see."
Max dropped the banner and ran to the girl. Who dropped to her knees and opened her arms. Which to David's surprise Max ran into.
David looked confused. "Y-you two know each other?"
"Know each other? This is my fucking older sister!" Max said still not believing she was here. "The last time I was eight, and my parents found out that she was still hanging out with me after they kicked her out at sixteen."
"What?" David asked watching the two siblings hug.
"Yep. I was sixteen... and my parents didn't want me to peruse what I wanted to." Roxanna said as she pulled out of the hug.
"Wow..." Was all David could say. He knew Max's parents weren't the best but kicking their own daughter out? For going after her dreams?
"So did I get the counsler job? Or since I'm his sister theres a conflict of interest?"
"Oh your fucking a counsler! I'm not fucking losing you again!" Max said glaring at David.
Like he was going to refuse, he had never seen Max so happy.
The three of them went into the counsler building where David finalized the paperwork and got Roxy a Camp Cambell counsler shirt. He and Max left so the girl could change.
After she was done she left the building and stood with the two males as they waited for the bus to pull up.
"Max! Not only are we getting all the kids from last year but were getting two new campers!" David cheered. Stars in his eyes.
"Again not fucking really, David." Max said crossing his arms.
David's voice was cut off by the sudden arrival of the bus... that ran him over.
"Is he okay?" Roxy asked as the bus doors opened and several children got off.
Once all the campers were off the bus took off again, running over David again in the process.
All the kids mingled as Roxy made her way over to David and helped him up. "Up you get David." She said patting some dirt off his shoulder.
"Thanks Roxy!" David said before clapping his hands and gathering all the kids attention. "Okay Campers! Let's head into the mess hall So we can introduce yourself and get our camp shirts!"
David walked and the kids followed Max hanging back to walk next to Roxy.
"So what have you been up to?" Max asked.
"I'll tell you later kiddo." Roxy mumbled patting his head, to which he grumbled and swatted her hands away, making her chuckle.
