Chapter 5: Heart of a Hero!
I stared at the screens in awe, still processing everything that went on. That was incredible power. And he used his arm as a shield so he could do it without Bakugo noticing. He's smart, clever. And he has an incredible Quirk.
Midoriya is an interesting kid, that's for sure.
The medical bots entered the building and retrieved Midoriya. Because of the damage to the building, we had to move to a different one so the rest of us could continue on with the exercises.
But I kept on thinking about the first match, not really paying any attention to the others that are being performed.
There's something about Midoriya that has caught my interest. Yeah, his power is amazing, and so is his mind. But it was the look in his eyes that caught me off guard.
It was a form of determination, that's true, but there was something else there that I wasn't familiar with.
An emotion I have never seen before.
It kind of reminds me of . . . hm, who is it that I'm thinking about? It's on the tip of my tongue, I know. Ugh!
I rubbed my head furiously in frustration. Who is it?! "Are you alright Yoshiko?" Kirishima asked, looking at me weirdly. I frowned, looking up at him. "Eh? Of course not. My mind is so tiny I can't think of the eyes that match!" I told him.
He looks so lost. I couldn't have been more clearer with my answer too. At least I think so. "Kanon, you need to think about what you want to say before you explain it." Tsuyu told me.
Hm? "Eh? I did though?" Her, Kirishima, Kaminari, and Sero sweat dropped.
But Mina started laughing and flung herself at my back. "That's what makes Kanon so interesting." She giggled. I grinned in turn, agreeing full heartedly. We threw our hands up in a cheer, making a few of our classmates chuckle.
"Oh, Young Yoshiko. It's your turn next. I'll let you pick your partner and you will draw lots on who your opponent is, along to see who are the Heroes and Villains."
Ooooh! Who do I want as my partner? Someone strong preferably. But then again they don't need to be. I'm more of a powerhouse myself. Brains would be nice. I lack in that department.
Hm. I scanned my classmates. Let's see. Grinning, I pointed at Kaminari.
"I choose you, Kaminari!" I cheered playfully with a wink. He sweat dropped but grinned nonetheless.
"Okay!" All Might put his hands in the box and pulled out two balls. The one from the Hero was actually Kaminari's original letter. The other is team J. If I'm not mistaken, that's Kirishima's and Sero's team.
Alright! I looked over at the two and grinned. "I hope you two are ready for another go."
Kirishima returned the grin with one of his own. "I'm ready alright!" Sero even grinned, moving his visor down to cover his face.
The four of us headed on up to get ready for our battle. The Villains got a head start to do what they needed while Kaminari and I waited outside. "So do you have a plan?" Kaminari asked me.
Hm. A plan, huh? I grinned. "Punch my way through." He sweat dropped at that.
"Well, we're going to have to eventually. Neither of us really have a Quirk that's good for reconnaissance. In the end, I should be the one to fight them both while you get the weapon, or worse case scenario, you should pair up against Sero. I can use Kirishima to make my Quirk stronger if need be." I simply said with a shrug.
Kaminari nodded at that. "That's a good point. We need to figure out where they are though. Sero will probably be the one left to guard while Kirishima stays on the lookout." He muttered, putting his hand under his chin, deep in thought.
That's true. I still say punching our way through is the best, but then again, this isn't how this test is supposed to go.
I'm not really great at using my brain. I should've been on the Villain team. That would have been easier. No! Bad Kanon. In my day to day life, I also need to think things through. That's another part of survival.
"Oh! Kanon, you think you could lure Kirishima over? We'll see where he's coming from and I'll slip by him while you two fight!" Kaminari exclaimed.
That's not a bad plan. Not at all. "Then, I'll need you to shock me." I smiled.
His faltered a bit, a look of doubt crossing his face. I just laughed. "It's okay, I tase myself all the time! Besides, for the distraction, I really gotta go big or go home, right?"
The sound of the buzzer made his decision. It's time. Nodding, the two of us ran in.
We did our best to be quiet about it. Fortunately for us, neither of our opponents have any Quirks that can tell where we are.
"Whoa!" I stopped abruptly, making Kaminari run straight into my back. But it didn't push me forward or anything since I'm pretty sturdy. "What is it? Huh?!" Tape. Tape everywhere. Looks like Sero is trying to slow us down.
"One might still be connected to him, so try not to touch it." I said, stepping around them. Kaminari followed my example and we continued on forward.
Once we reached a more open area, I looked at him. "We should get this started, right?" He nodded in turn and placed his hand on me. Then his whole body sparked with electricity that travelled over to me.
My body jerked at the sensation, but I just let it happen, feeling it go straight into my muscles. After a bit he let go of me.
"Are you okay?" He asked wearily. I just grinned, some sparks continued to dance on my body, like it usually does when I absorb it all up. "Yep. Go hide."
He smiled, mischief in his eyes. He quickly ran down a nearby corridor. Alright. Let's get this party started.
I went over to the wall and took a deep breath. "HYAA!" I shouted, slamming my fist into it. Long cracks went up the wall and ceiling as the whole room shook, along with any rooms above or below.
It wasn't enough strength where it would harm or compromise the weapon or the foundation, I was careful to mediate it. I only want them to know where I am.
I went to the other wall and did the same. This time, the wall crumbled away and the nearby area shook harder. I stepped through the room and went to the next wall, punching it again. All the while minding my own strength so not to deduct so many points for us.
I want a good grade on this. Mostly because I will fail in the school part, so I must succeed in the physical part. I can't flunk out.
Tomura needs me here. No, not need. He wants me here. Insurance so nothing goes terribly wrong.
It wasn't long before I sensed it. A hit. I ducked, avoiding Kirishima's hardened arm.
Turning quickly I slammed my leg into his hardened stomach. However, there was enough power to fling him back. But he was ready for a fight. "You're making it too easy to find you." He said.
I just smirked, getting into fighting stance. "Good. I was getting bored without anyone to play with." I stated.
He laughed, amused by me. Then he launched at me again. This time I allowed his hardened hit to strike me. He struck me in the chest and I gasped.
This time I was flung harshly into the wall. I felt my body absorbing the attack, going to my muscles. Using the energy in my legs, I launched forward, almost appearing in front of him, and delivered a strong punch to his hardened jaw.
Despite his armor, the pack to the punch sent him flying straight through a wall.
"Kaminari, have you found the weapon?" I asked, walking over towards the direction I sent Kirishima.
We each got this bluetooth sort of device so we can communicate with our partner. Of course All Might can hear all of our conversations.
"Yeah. They're two floors above where we were, farthest to the left. I'm currently hiding. Sero has the whole room all taped up."
A cloud of dust blocked my view past the hole, so I remained on guard.
Kirishima emerged from the cloud with a shout and I jumped away before he could strike me. His fist embedded harshly into the ground. I whistled. "Nice punch." I admired, tilting my head to the side.
Kirishima's smile stayed and he lunged at me again. I did the same and we both brought our fists back.
Our fists collided and because of the force, wind whipped around. We both brought our other fist back and struck again. We struggled against the others hold. But I smirked.
I brought my leg up and struck him in the solar plexus before he could harden his chest. He let out a shout as he flew back.
Before he could get a chance to get up, I lunged forward and channeled extra energy to the muscles in my arm before slamming my fist into his gut, making him break through one, two, three floors and fall down to the lower level.
"Alright. That should buy me enough time." I muttered, running in the direction I needed to be.
Farthest room to the left. Let's see, that would be, ah! Here! I jogged over, spotting Kaminari who's crouched down by the door.
He heard me coming and snapped his head in my direction. "Kanon. Did you take care of Kirishima?" He asked.
I shrugged, thinking about it. "He'll probably be here in five minutes. I just threw him down a couple levels." His eyes went wide with disbelief.
Let's see. I peeked into the room. Sero is on high alert. Kirishima must've warned him. "Hey, can electricity go through his tape?" I whispered to my partner. He nodded, understanding lighting up his face. "Yeah, but wouldn't he be weary of me?"
Good point. Someone like Sero must know not to come into contact with Kaminari so lightly.
There must be something we can do. "Ah! If you go in first, he won't hesitate to shoot it at you!" Kaminari exclaimed quietly.
I nodded, not understanding. "If he does, I can jump out and grab it and send a bolt his way!"
Oh! That could work! And no normal person can take a hit of electricity like that! Then all we'd have to do is touch the weapon then we're home free!
"Alright. We gotta do this now before Kirishima gets here. Ready?" I asked. He nodded. Okay. Let's do this!
Without any hesitation, I ran into the room, going over the taped up barrier. "Nice try Yoshiko!" Sero shouted, shooting tape at me.
Heh. Game over.
I waited for Kaminari to jump out, but he didn't. Only too late did I realize he wasn't coming. The tape wrapped around my torso tightly.
"Ahg!" Kaminari's shout sounded.
I glanced back to see Kirishima having a hold of him. Kaminari sparked, but Kirishima didn't let go. His face twisted in pain, but he quickly made do to wrap the capture tape around him. Kaminari is out.
"Well that didn't go as planned." I stated.
Sero chuckled, feeling the victory. I just smiled. "Hey, Sero. You do know there's a difference between your tape and the capture tape, right?"
I couldn't see his face because of his visor, but I could tell he's confused. Smirking, I moved my arms out, ripping the tape off me.
"Wha?!" I grabbed the part that wasn't torn and yanked. "WAA!" He shouted as he soared in the air.
"HAA!" I shouted, flinging him straight into Kirishima. The two let out shouts as they were forced out the room. I quickly ran over to the fake nuke and placed my hand on it.
"Heroes win!" All Might's voice boomed.
I couldn't help the wide smile on my face and I threw my fists into the air. "Alright!! Kaminari, we won!" I cheered, running over to him.
He smiled at my enthusiasm. I didn't have any trouble lifting him off his feet and spinning us. "Waa! Kanon, hey!" He shouted, but I just giggled.
Kirishima smacked the ground. "Man. So close." He grumbled. I placed Kaminari on his feet before walking over to the two.
"You guys did great." I offered my hands for them. Both of them grabbed my hands. Before they could pull themselves up, I hauled them up with my enhance strength.
It looks like I still have some. I should probably work it out.
Eh. It'll be fine.
Man that was fun! "Do you guys think we'll be doing things like this a lot? It was fun, wasn't it?" I asked as we headed back.
I was ahead of the guys so I walked backwards as I spoke to them. Kirishima nodded, holding his fists near his chest. "Yeah! It was awesome! This really is a school for Heroes!" He agreed eagerly, making me laugh.
Kaminari and Sero chuckled at our enthusiasm. "You two are so similar." Sero noted.
Hm? Kirishima and I looked at each other curiously. Really? That's new. Kirishima is so pure from what I've seen so far.
And I'm . . . I'm pretty twisted.
But they can't know that.
I just giggled, turning forward. "C'mon! I wanna hear the notes!" I said, taking off in a sprint. "Ah! Kanon!" Kaminari complained. I soon heard three pairs of footsteps following after me. This just motivated me to run faster.
I made it to observation room, rushing past the doors. I threw my hands in the air. "Yay! First!" Kirishima came next with Kaminari and Sero tying for third. Mina and Toru laughed. "Kanon always looks like she's having fun." Toru observed. I nodded happily. "Yep!" I popped the 'p' at the end.
"Alright, now that the four are here, let's start the feedback." All Might instructed. The four of us lined up next to each other. I was bouncing on the heels of my feet a bit.
Momo raised her hand first. "Yes. Yoshiko-San shook the foundation, destroying the walls and flooring, that could possibly lead to harm to the weapon." She began. But the good looking boy raised his hand.
"Actually, she was careful with her strength." Oh? He didn't make any observation with the others. But he's talking this time? I thought he was mute.
That's Todoroki if I remember. Ice boy.
He noticed.
Momo looked surprised by his claim. "That's true. While we had the whole discussion about the destruction with Young Bakugo's match, Young Yoshiko here had made sure that the amount of strength she used with each hit would in no way cause damage to the foundation of the building nor the room with the weapon. She had made sure to hit or destroy walls or flooring that didn't affect the building too much." All Might said.
Yay! They noticed! Although I kinda wanted to go all out. But fighting in a building is such a pain. I hate having to restrict my strength. I wanna go wild!
"Young Sero. You did great standing guard in the room and setting up all those barriers in the building. But you must me weary of keeping the tape attached to you when you attach it to others. People with strength like Young Yoshiko could easily use it against you. Or if it had been Young Kaminari, he'd merely have to activate his Quirk."
He turned his gaze to Kirishima. "Young Kirishima. I like your determination. You always got back on your feet. You and Young Yoshiko did very well on this exercise. All of you did. With some improvements you'll be able to handle situation like this with ease. Well done everyone." Huh?
That's . . . that's the first time I was actually praised. It's weird.
There's a weird feeling in my chest. Kind of tight, but not too tight. It's different and I . . . kinda like it.
~
"Ah! Midoriya!" I shouted, springing up from my desk. This immediately perked the others as we rushed over towards him. Most of the class stayed behind after classes to wait for Midoriya. He's a cute kid, and he got hurt pretty bad. But he was just so awesome in that fight!
"Good work!" Kirishima spoke, nearly bumping into me as we neared him.
Midoriya seemed so confused, and flustered. "Man, I don't know what you were saying during the match, but you were fired up." Kirishima said, holding his fist up excitedly. Mina jumped next to mee, looking at Midoriya with admiration.
Sero nodded feverently. "I can't believe you fought evenly with Bakugo who was first in the entrance exam!"
Mina moved his fists excitedly. "You did a good job dodging!" Mina exclaimed as she beamed at him.
"You guys were so intense and passionate that everyone had to work hard to break even. You sure know how to rile people up!" I told him with a smile. Watching really made me want to fight!
Mina jumped up and down repeating her sentence, interrupting Aoyama. "H-Huh?" Midoriya seemed beyond confused.
Kirishima pointed at himself with his thumb. "I'm Kirishima Eijiro. We're all going over the training together right now." We then went around introducing ourselves to him.
Midoriya didn't seem used to people talking to him because he was having trouble responding. Which is actually really adorable.
"Tokoyami-Kun!" Huh?
We glanced back. Tokoyami sat on a desk by Kyoka and Ojiro. Iida walked over, serious as ever. "That desk is not a chair. Get off immediately." He said, waving his hands around.
Kyoka placed her hand lazily on her hip. "It's not that big of a deal, is it?" She asked, making Iida jump in surprise.
He slumped a bit. "You people. I cannot condone actions that disrespect the desks. The great men and women who are our upperclassman once used!"
I laughed loudly. "Iida is funny. Ah! Iida is funny." I repeated, doing his hand gestures.
The others sweat dropped at my actions, but Mina and Toru laughed in turn.
The other door to the room opened and in came Kaminari and Ochako with some textbooks. Once Ochako spotted Midoriya she made a beeline to him. "Wait, Deku, she didn't heal your injuries?!"
Huh? I took a good look at him and realized that his arm was in a sling.
"EH?! How long have you had that on?!" I asked, pointing at the sling. Kirishima sighed and chopped my head lightly. "Yoshiko, you should really pay more attention to your surroundings." Eh? Really?
Midoriya smiled nervously. "Oh, uh, it's because of how much stamina I have and-" His gaze looked over the classroom and he stopped talking upon spotting something. Hm?
I followed his line of sight to see Bakugo's empty seat. "Oh. Him. I tried getting him to stay, really. I even latched onto his leg, but that seemed to anger him more." I said, placing a hand on my cheek.
I really wanted to talk more with Bakugo. I like him. He's got great spunk. An interesting fellow really. I think he and I can get along, but he doesn't really like me.
"Um, Yoshiko-San-"
"Ka-n-on." I drew out my first name. Midoriya nodded, a light blush on his face. He's really not used to girls. So cute! "Kanon-San. How long ago did he leave?" Hm.
I thought about it. "Well he had a real hard time getting me off his leg. He should still be on school grounds." I told him.
He immediately excused himself and took off.
Strange.
"Oh. They're by the gates." Mina said after a while, by the window. Oh? Tsuyu, Ochako, and I walked over and watched Izuku run out towards Bakugo.
The two stopped, some distance from each other.
"Man, I wish we could hear." I complained.
Mina and Ochako nodded in agreement. But whatever Izuku said seemed to anger Bakugo. Like everything does.
But . . . it's not like his normal anger. I watched the scene carefully. Bakugo . . . Izuku . . . what's going on I wonder. The same look that was in Izuku's eyes is in Bakugo's this time. He's frustrated, but there's that emotion in there too.
What is it? What is it and why do they have it? Why does it make me feel uneasy and excited?
Those two seem to have a connection. What I'm not sure. They're obviously not on good terms, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's all bad.
What is it I wonder.
"What was that?" Mina asked curiously. "The fated battle between men." Ochako said seriously.
Tsuyu placed her finger on her cheek. "It looked like Midoriya-Chan was just giving excuses one-sidedly, though." She said, turning to Ochako. But it didn't phase her. "The fated battle between men!" Ochako repeated.
Fated battle huh.
I turned my gaze back to Bakugo's disappearing figure. That look. That emotion. The same one Izuku had. What is it. It makes my heart stop and race all at once. An emotion I have only seen once before. I can't quite recall it but it stops me in place.
Only those two have shown it to me.
Is it because they both desire to be Heroes? Is that the will of fire? Is it the fire that rages in their hearts?
Whatever it is, I can't help but admire them for it. These two kids . . . they're going to be something we've never seen before. I can tell.
But to be that, then they will become hindrances. I don't want to see that look in their eyes die. But it's going to have to.
For Tomura.
"He's not going to like this."
