Chapter 4: Bakugo vs. Midoriya!
The curriculum of U.A. High's hero course: Regular required classes, like English, in the morning. Lunch is at the main cafeteria, where we can buy gourmet food for reasonable prices. And then, in the afternoon, we finally have the exciting course.
Hero Basic Training!
"I am . . ." A deep voice boomed. Ah, this voice is-! All Might came in through the door in a very show off manner. "Coming through the door like a normal person." He finished.
I sweat dropped. I don't think you are though.
Regardless to his entrance, I became tense. This is him. The number one Hero; the Symbol of Peace All Might.
Our greatest threat.
Anxiety began to well within me. I need to be careful. Because although his power would enhance mine, I could never beat him. The Hero who rivals Sensei.
A truly fearsome opponent.
The class began to murmur excitedly about their favorite Hero. He walked over to the podium in front of the class.
"I teach Hero Basic Training. It is a subject where you train in different ways to learn the basics of being a Hero. You'll take the most units of this subject! Let's get right into it! This is what we'll do today-Combat Training!"
He held a card with the english word for 'BATTLE' written across it in red.
Bakugo and I immediately got excited. "And to go with that are these!" He pointed to the wall and out came secret compartments with seat number on each panel.
"Costumes made based on your Quirk registrations and requests you sent in before school started." Ah, costumes, that's right.
Everyone grabbed their costumes and went to change in the locker rooms.
I had a hard time deciding on my costume.
Before we enrolled in U.A. High, we submitted our Quirk registration, physical measurements, and desired designs so a support company under exclusive contract with the school could prepare state of the art costumes for us.
It's an interesting system, but it's kind of annoying they get this.
I still had trouble despite the freebie.
On one hand I wanted something flashy and cool looking. On the other, I don't plan on being a Hero.
I don't see the need to hide myself. But I think it's kind of cool.
My costume is a short kimono dress. It's black at the top and fades down to red, orange, and yellow with a midnight blue sash around my waist. The short kimono has short sleeves, but I wore a tight black long sleeve underneath, and white tights as well. My arms are bandaged up to near my elbow since my main style is hand to hand combat.
I pulled my red hair up into a ponytail and slipped on my geta. Now these shoes are made of special metal. Heavy, but I'm a strong person and that just means the hit will be as well.
Once we were dressed we headed to Ground Beta, where All Might had told us to meet.
As we walked, I admired our glasses costumes. "Ah! Ochako! Your costume is cute." I admired with a smile.
She blushed bashfully and rubbed the back of her head. "Thank you. Your outfit is pretty cute as well." She said, eyeing my kimono with interest.
"Yeah? I was going for traditional warrior." I clenched my fist and put it up in a stance. Mina laughed striking a pose of her own.
"Ah! Mina! Your outfit is cute and flashy. You kind of look like an alien." I said.
She grinned widely at that. "Right?! So cute." We laughed and I looked over everyone again.
They all wore pretty cool outfits. All Might stood in front of us. The ever present smile on his face.
"They say clothes make the man, young men and ladies. Be fully aware. From now on, you are Heroes!" Eh?
Me . . . a Hero?
That's something I never thought would be said. I looked down at myself and my outfit.
I moved my hands a bit staring at them.
I'm a Hero.
A smile crept onto my face. What? That's all it really takes? How sad.
"That's great everyone. You all look cool! Now shall we begin, you zygotes?" All Might asked. We all choursed 'yes'.
He led us further into Ground Beta, following our teacher. "Now, it's time for combat training!"
Iida raised his hand. "Sir! This is a battle center from the entrance exam, so will we be conducting urban battles again?" He questioned our teacher.
He still sounds like a class president. Maybe he'll want to be one in the future.
All Might held up two fingers. "No, we're going to move ahead two steps! Most of the time fighting villains takes place outside, but if you look at the total numbers, atrocious villains appear indoors at a higher rate."
Atrocious? Well now, I'm a little hurt. Oh well.
"Imprisonment, house arrest, backroom deals. In this society filled with Heroes, Truly intelligent villains hide in the shadows."
Awe, okay you're forgiven. I internally laughed at my joke.
Ah, wait. Whenever I did fight people it was out in the open . . . Ah, but I have yet to fight Heroes because I hide in the shadows.
So I am intelligent! In that sense. I still suck at school work.
"For this class, you'll be split into Villains and Heroes and fight 2-on-2 indoor battles."
Eh? So we're fighting? Alright! Hand to hand combat is the best! "Without basic training?" Tsu asked him. He just put his hand up and clenched it. "This is a real battle to understand those basics! However, the key this time is that there's no robot you can just beat up."
Well that's better. It's no fun fighting robots. People were meant to battle people! It's much more exciting this way!
"How will wins and losses be determined?"
"Can we beat them up anyway?"
"Will the punishment be expulsion like with Aizawa-Sensei?"
"How shall we split up?"
"Isn't this cape crazy?"
"Oh, oh, oh! Hand to hand combat is the idea, right?!"
I had asked excitedly since everyone else was firing questions. "I'll answer all your questions!"
He pulled out a small piece of paper, which looked even smaller due to his large size. "Now listen here." A script?
"The situation is that the Villains have hidden a nuclear weapon somewhere in their hideout. The Heroes are trying to dispose of that. The Heroes need to catch the Villains or get the nuclear weapon back in the allotted time. The Villains need to protect the nuclear weapon for the whole time or catch the Heroes"
I laughed loudly, smiling widely. "It sounds like a game I play at the arcade." I grinned.
Midoriya nodded in agreement, a bit of excitement in his own eyes.
All Might picked up a box from behind him labeled 'lots'. "Teams and opponents will be determined by drawing lots! Ah, but we have an uneven number of students so three of you will be doing this twice."
We drew lots. Except my piece of paper has an All Might doodle. Huh?
"All Might-Sensei. Your doodling needs some work." I stated.
He jumped a bit. "Huh? No way!" He looked over my shoulder as we stared at the makeshift doodle. "Hm, I see. So this isn't as good as I thought it'd be." My classmates sweat dropped at us.
"Well, Young Yoshiko drew the extra. Which means you'll go last. I'll let you pick your team mate. And then I'll let you draw which team to go against. Alright?"
"Yes!" I said, walking back to my friends, putting the poorly drawn doodle inside my kimono. Everyone else got paired up.
All Might brought two more boxes out front. One is labeled Hero the other Villain.
Oh? I wonder what team I'll be on.
He reached inside both at the same time. "The first teams to fight will be . . . These guys!" Team D and Team A.
Ah. That's Ochako and Midoriya vs. Bakugo and Iida. What bad luck. Bakugo doesn't like Midoriya at all.
.
.
.
He's going to kill him.
"Team A will be the Heroes and Team D will be the Villains. Everyone else head toward the monitor room."
We obeyed and began heading out.
Oh. I stopped and looked back at the four. "Good luck guys! Fight!" I threw my fist up in the air and Ochako replicated it.
I turned and followed everyone to the basement of the building. Down there is a large room with various screens and monitors of the building.
All Might had given them each coms and had one himself to speak to them freely. He let the Villains go in to set up, giving them a five minute head start.
"Hey, who are you cheering on Kanon?" Mina asked.
Hm. . . "I want Ochako to win, but Bakugo is an interesting character. I hope he's as good as he says he is." I admitted. She seemed surprised by my answer.
Ah! It's started!
We watched as Ochako and Midoriya infiltrate from the window and headed down the corridors.
Man, those are some inconvenient passages. The halls are long and narrow. Not to mention it's hard to see what's around the corner unless you actually approach it.
How will they fight? Ah!
Bakugo rounded the corner and went to strike the two. Midoriya saw this coming and tackled Ochako away as he avoided the blast of his explosions.
That was close. Once the smoke cleared I whistled. He sure did damage to that wall.
His lips moved, but we couldn't hear what they were saying. Ah, so boring. I want to hear~! "A surprise attack from the start." Mineta murmured, already intimidated by Bakugo.
Kirishima punched his fist to his hand. "Bakugo, that's cheating! A surprise attack isn't manly at all!" He complained to the screen.
"Eh? I think it was the perfect start though." I said, tilting my head to the side. "Huh?!" Kirishima asked, eyebrows shooting up.
"Young Yoshiko is right. A surprise attack is a strategy too. They're in the middle of a real battle right now." All Might agreed, backing me up.
Mina looked excited. "Midoriya avoided it!" She spoke happily. "There goes Bakugo!" Kaminari said, eyes glued to the screen.
I watched as well, interested in the battle.
Bakugo ran at Midoriya. He swung again, but it's as if Midoriya saw it coming cause he grabbed his arm, stopping him. Before Bakugo could get over his shock, Midoriya flipped him over and slammed him into the ground. Oh?
It's as if he knew his moves before he made them. He's pretty good.
Midoriya was saying something, and whatever it is, it affected Bakugo tremendously.
Explosions danced in his palm as a look of pure rage and hatred coated his face. I stared at his face in surprise. What the hell did Midoriya say to him?
I didn't think Midoriya could make someone this upset.
"What was Bakugo saying? Can't tell with just the cameras in a fixed position and no sound." Kirishima frowned.
I can't tell either. But based on is facial expressions it's nothing nice.
"He's talking to his partner over the small wireless radio. You can bring that plus the building's floor plan and this, capture tape!"
He showed us a roll of white tape. "Once you wrap this around your opponent, it shows that you've captured them." Eh? That doesn't sound fun.
It's fight until the other drops! The true way to battle someone.
"The time limit is fifteen minutes. And the Heroes don't know where the nuclear weapon is located, right?" Tooru wanted to make sure.
All Might confirmed it. "The Heroes are clearly at a disadvantage here!" Mina frowned, a bit concerned for Ochako and Midoriya.
"Heroes should be able to turn the tables on whatever predicament they're in. Besides, didn't Aizawa-Sensei tell you too. You know . . ." He played it out, signalling us.
Ah! "Here we go!" I grinned, throwing my arms up along with everyone else. "Plus Ultra!" We shouted in unison.
This is fun. "Monsieur, Bakugo is-" Aoyama brought us back to the screen.
Bakugo put one hand back. Midoriya shouted something and Bakugo set off an explosion and launched his way, using the explosion to move faster.
He turned and struck his leg out. Midoriya brought his arms up and managed to block his kick. That was nice reflexes.
Ah! Midoriya is trying to wrap the capture tape around his leg. To stop him from doing it again, Bakugo did a right swing at him. Midoriya saw it coming though and dodged as Bakugo blew up another wall.
He's good. "That guy's amazing!" Sato exclaimed loudly.
"He's not even using his Quirk fighting against the guy who finished first in the entrance exam!" Sero spoke, equalling shocked and amazed as Sato.
Midoriya Izuku. He doesn't look it, but he's strong and clever.
He reminds me of a innocent little boy, yet he's faring against Bakugo who beat me in the exams and the Quirk assessment test. Interesting. He has excellent reaction time. That's not an easy trait to acquire.
Bakugo put his hands back. He's going to use the explosions to launch again. Midoriya saw this and ran off and away before he could. Smart.
Bakugo tried finding him, but Midoriya lost him in the maze. Bakugo looked up and began shouting. What is he saying?
He set off some small explosions in his hands. Something I've noticed he does when he's angry.
He certainly has anger issues. "He seems real angry. It's scary!" Kirishima noted.
I nodded in agreement from next to him.
"How can adorable Midoriya make him this angry? Kid has some major anger issues." I inputted. Kirishima nodded, eyes wide and stuck to the screen where Bakugo was screaming again.
This is a very personal match.
He didn't even go after Ochako and didn't follow as she escaped. He's sticking to Midoriya. He has beef with him
"Ah! He just said 'fucking'." I informed, pointing at Bakugo, proud I was able to read his lips. "Hey! You should really watch your language." Kyoka said, sweat dropping.
"How do you even know that?" Kaminari asked curiously.
I just grinned widely. "I have a friend that likes to curse at me." I answered happily.
Kirishima's eye twitched. "I don't think that's something to be happy about." Huh? It's not? Seeing my expression his head hung a bit.
Swearing at your friends is the mark of friendship! Well, I like to think so at least.
Turning my attention back to the screen. He's still looking for him. And he's getting angrier by the second. Wow. I've only seen Tomura and Banri get that angry. And . . . me of course.
Oh. On another screen, Ochako made it to Iida and the weapon and is hiding.
It looks like she just made some noise because Iida turned to where she was hiding. She came out of hiding considering her cover is blown.
Iida pointed her and I'm guessing is speaking. His helmet is making it hard to tell.
My eyes glanced back over to the screens with Bakugo. He's found Midoriya!
His grenade gauntlets glowed a red light briefly. Oh boy.
What is that?
He held his hand up, gesturing to the said gauntlet. He looks a little mad. Like in the head.
He held his hand out and pulled back the handle, revealing a small pin. My eyes went wide as realization hit.
"Oh shit." I whispered, shell shocked. Could it be . . . that those gauntlets are actually . . . oh shit.
He aimed it at Midoriya, finger latching on the pin. He's insane! "Young Bakugo, stop!" All Might shouted through the com.
The hole in the gauntlet lit up as it readied for Bakugo to shoot. "Are you trying to kill him?!" All Might shouted. Bakugo said something, but I couldn't hear.
He pulled the pin and an extremely large line of explosions headed directly for Midoriya.
The sounds of the explosion roared in the air and the building we're in shook violently from his attack. "This is supposed to be a class!" Kirishima exclaimed, stabilizing himself from the shaking building.
"Young man! Young Midoriya!" All Might called through the com, trying to see if he's alive.
Once the smoke died down I saw him on the floor. Bakugo walking towards him.
Bakugo had a creepy look on his face. No, not creepy. It's sinister. I'm all too familiar with that face. Ah, it's almost like I'm back at the bar. My home.
Bakugo Katsuki.
What's going on in your mind I wonder.
I looked back at the other pair to see how they're responding to the attack.
Iida seems to be trying to communicate with Bakugo. He's distracted. Ochako used the opportunity to run towards him and the weapon.
Iida noticed and ran towards her. Ochako touched her fingers together, a small pink light emitted, and she jumped up. She made herself float and headed for the weapon.
Once she is over she touched her fingers together and descended down to the weapon.
That's right. Once the weapon is retrieved the exercise is over.
Iida turned and ran towards the weapon. Because of his Quirk, he made it to the weapon in time and moved it out of the way.
Ochako tumbled onto the ground and rolled into the wall, upside down.
"'A' for effort." I tried. Looking back, I winced. The boys battle is way more intense then theirs. If you can even call that a battle.
"Sir you should stop them! That Bakugo's really crazy! He's gonna kill him!" Kirishima tried, worry etched onto his face, as it is on everyone else's.
The kid does have some screws loose. But I don't really see the problem.
I mean, yeah. It's a one sided masacre right here. And cute little Midoriya is definitely going to have broken bones and burns, but this is a fight.
Fights give you scars. The idea of fighting is to fight until your opponent can't get back up.
Besides, he's not going to kill him. I know that now because he deliberately missed Midoriya with that powerful attack.
"No. Young Bakugo. The next time you use that, I'll stop the fight, and your team will lose. To attack on such a large scale inside is inviting destruction of the stronghold you should be protecting. That is a foolish plan for both Heroes and Villains! You will lose a lot of points for it!" All Might warned.
He's not wrong. If there was an actual nuke in the building causing mass destruction like that is a danger to both sides.
Both would die.
Villains are not all completely stupid. We have sense and we are clever.
If this were real, Bakugo could have destroyed us all. But it is a training exercise, so that's a plus. It's a learning experience. But there is something strange.
I glanced at All Might from the corner of my eye. His hand is on the desk and he's leaning on it, clutching the com in his other as he watched them with intense eyes.
As a teacher and Hero he should be stopping this. But he's not. It's as if he's . . . respecting one of their wishes.
But why? Why? And who? Who is it that the Symbol of Peace is favoring? It would have to be Bakugo or Midoriya. Is it Bakugo? But why is he favoring him?
He's taken a certain interest in this fight.
No, wait. You're too suspicious. I'm jumping the gun here. It might be nothing. This just might be how Hero teachers work. I shouldn't jump to conclusions.
Movement on the screen drew my attention back to the fight. Bakugo rushed at Midoriya using his explosions to propel him forward.
Midoriya went to punch and Bakugo seemingly pulled his to punch as well.
Except he created a small explosion instead to maneuver himself up and over Midoriya. He faced one hand away to the hole in the wall and one at Midoriya. He shot off the one on his hand to stop himself and the other explosion hit Midoriya's back.
He's not just a muscle head idiot. He's smart.
The class made a commotion. "He doesn't look like the type to think, but he's more subtle than I expected." Huh?
Kirishima, Mina, and I turned to the boy behind us. He has ice covering half his body. Todoroki.
"What do you mean?" Kirishima asked. I looked back at the screen.
"Bakugo changed his course in a blast that doubled as a smoke screen and then did it again immediately. He uses his explosions to the best of their ability." I told them, staring at the boys on the screen.
"Getting in a clean hit while fighting against inertia requires fine lateral adjustments to the power of the explosions." Yaoyorozu added.
The others looked back at the screen, a mix of emotions on their faces. "He's too talented . . . too talented . . . ugh." Kaminari sighed.
Bakugo swung his right fist, striking Midoriya. He grabbed the arm he struck and used his explosions to quickly curve around to be in front of Midoriya and threw him over and slammed him into the ground.
"Ah. He's getting payback from earlier." I said. So he was still holding onto that.
What a salty person.
"This is lynching! He can capture him for this exercise by just wrapping the tape around him!" Mina shouted. Fearing for Midoriya. Fear and pity.
"Those are not the actions of a Hero." Tokoyami finally spoke.
Kaminari scratched his head. "I thought Midoriya was pretty amazing too. But in terms of combat power, Bakugo is definitely a ball of natural instincts." He's right.
The way he moves is incredible. It's not just training. He must have had these instincts since a young age. He's gifted for fighting.
I want to fight him
But they are right in their sense. I glanced back at All Might. He's clenching the com tightly. He's leaned in more and has become tense, rigid.
Why is he not stopping it?
Could I be right? Could he be favoring one of them? Why is he letting Bakugo do this?
Although I agree that the capture tape is a coward and weaklings way out, as Heroes it's as essential as actual fighting.
Our ideals should be different. Yet he's not stopping them.
All Might. What are you hiding?
"He's running away!" Mina exclaimed. Huh? Midoriya is running off. Well that's the smart thing to do for him. "That's not something a man should do, but he has no choice. But something's strange. Why?"
I understand what Kirishima means. Instead of running into the halls, he ran to the wall in front of a window and faced Bakugo. What's he planning.
Bakugo stalked towards Midoriya, angry as ever. Midoriya is speaking to Bakugo. Ah, he's screaming now.
His face . . . whatever he said he said it with such raw emotion, such passion. What kind of personal vendetta is between these two?
Bakugo screamed in response and the two lunged at each other. They both brought their fist back, now in front of each other.
What is this? I don't know what they're saying, but there's so much feelings, so much hope and passion.
Such strong emotions. It's incredible.
"I said this looks bad! Sensei!" Kirishima shouted at All Might, silently begging him to stop them.
He doesn't want to. He really doesn't want to stop them. But giving into their pressure, he brought the com to his lips.
"Both of you sto-" He stopped suddenly as Midoriya shouted something. His eyes quickly glanced up and then back.
What the?
Looking back at Ochako and Iida, I saw her grab hold and hug a pillar.
What is he planning?
I looked back at the two; Bakugo swung and Midoriya blocked it with one arm and swung up.
The force of his hit broke the ground and destroyed the ceiling all the way up and broke through many stories and the the roof.
Glass, cement, everything shattered at the force and the building shook again, more intense, more violent, and it reverberated down to my bones.
"What the?!" I shouted as I stumbled around.
I turned back to the other screen. The floor beneath Ochako and Iida broke apart, making the large pillar become free. No way!
Ochako's fingers glowed pink and she easily lifted the pillar. She swung it like a bat, hitting the debris and they lurched to Iida.
He could only bring his arms up to protect himself from the onslaught of debris.
While he did that, Ochako again jumped up and over him, landing on the weapon and successfully capturing it.
What the hell? What just happened.
I looked back to Midoriya, whose arm is purple with terrible bruising and broken. Not only that, he has burns and bruises all over him.
Just what the hell are you?
"Hero Team . . . wins!" All Might called as Midoriya collapsed to the ground.
I feel like I just witnessed something great. Why is that I wonder.
