Chapter 6: Hangout
EVELYN'S POV:
It has been a week since the concert and everything has returned back to normal. When I had gone back to get Jessica and Cade, I had told them that I knew Jack from before he became a singer and if they liked they could meet him in person. Of course, they had jumped at the opportunity and Jessica had gone as far as to tell me that she was indebted to me for life. They had been confused as to why I hadn't mentioned this crucial fact before but I just told them that I didn't want to get their hopes up. They had looked at me weirdly, probably not believing the lie I told but something in my expression must have told not to push the issue.
"If you don't want that I ice cream I could always finish it for you," Jessica's voice breaks through my thoughts.
"Don't even dare think about it," I cover my ice cream protectively.
We were sitting in one of the popular cafe's on campus waiting for Cade to arrive. Jessica, Cade and I had been hanging out more often for the last week and when he had called me earlier saying that he wanted to hang out I had readily agreed. Jessica had been reluctant to come with me insisting that he asked me but I had managed to drag her along, convincing her that her argument was foolish. He probably wanted me to convey the message to her and then for both of us to come together.
Just then the doorbell chimes and I turn around to see if the Cade is the one entering. He waves at me when he sees me and makes his way towards our cabin.
"Hey, Evelyn. Thanks for coming. I wasn't sure if you would actually," He chuckles as he makes his way towards us.
Just then he sees Jessica sitting beside me and if I didn't know better I would say that his face falls when he sees her. I hear him say something like " and Jessica's here too, what did you expect Jake? you asked her to HANGOUT" but I am not sure what he means so I might have heard her wrong. But his face quickly morphs back into his usual expression.
"Hey Jessica,'' he greets her taking a seat opposite us.
"I bet you didn't expect me here, did ya?" Jessica smirks at him.
"Can't say that I was. I never invited you," he retorts.
"Don't blame me. I actually did try to tell her that I didn't wanna join you guys but for the nerd she is, she has got a pretty thick skull," Jessica says defensively.
"Guys You don't have to fight about it," I say trying to calm them down.
"So Cade any particular reason you wanted to "hang out"," Jessica asks amused.
"No Jessica I just wanted to "hang out"," Cade says exasperated.
"Okay I don't what this is about but you guys have got to stop," I reprimand them, annoyed at them for their childish attitude.
We talk for a while and then Jessica excuses herself to go to the restroom.
"So Evelyn"
I look up at Cade who is rubbing the back of his neck with what I suppose to be a nervous expression.
"Yes?'' I urge him to continue.
"So I was wondering if you wanted to .." the shrill ringtone of my phone cuts him off. I look at my phone screen to find that it's an unknown number. I am about to reject the call when Cade says, " You should attend. It could be important".
"If you say so," I say accepting the call. It's most probably a wrong number anyway.
"Hello," I speak into the phone.
"Evelyn? This is Jack," the caller at the other end replies.
"Jack? Is everything alright?'' I ask surprised at the fact that he is calling me. It's been a long time since he last called me. Even before we were still talking I was the one who called him. He hated talking to people on phone so he always chose texts over phone calls. I still remember him texting me non stop till I messaged him back.
"Yeah. Can we please meet?'' he asks.
''You are still in town? I thought you were going back the day after the concert," I ask confused.
"Yeah I got some offers from local companies for adds and I stayed for a few days. So can we meet?'' he repeats his question again.
"Maybe. I don't know. When do you want to meet?" I am a bit hesitant to agree.
"I am leaving in an hour so can we please meet like now?" he says in a meek voice, "Don't worry I am already here to pick you up".
"What? so you assumed that I would meet you?" Now I am angry.
''No, Evy. I wanted to ask you before but I was too much of a coward to call you and decided to be there first so I could delay this conversation as long as I could," He says in a sad voice.
I smile as I hear his explanation. If I was being honest this was something that Jack would do. He always tried to delay the things that he was scared of doing. Wonder why he was scared of calling me. Nervous I could understand but he has no reason to be scared.
"Fine. Tell me where you are ?"
He tells me where he is and I hang up after telling him that I would be there in a few minutes.
I place my phone back on the table and only then I notice that both Cade and Jessica are staring at me.
"What?'' I ask incredulously.
"So you are going to meet Jackson," Jessica states more than asks.
"Yeah, but before I go," I turn towards Cade, " What was it that you wanted to ask?''
"Uh, nothing."
"Come on tell me. I am not leaving until you say so?" I demand.
"I was just wondering if you could recommend me some good books," He says.
"Of course. Always eager to help out a fellow bibliophile. I will make a list and give it to you the next time we meet," I reply joyously.
"Sure," he says but he sounds kind of disappointed.
"I will take my leave now," I get up and wave them goodbye, making my way towards the door but as I walk away I hear Jessica say.
"Tough luck, dude."
Wonder what that was all about.
