Chapter 2: Room mate
Evelyn's POV:
I try to push past the people crowding the hallway, the heavy books in my hand weighing me down. I look down at my watch and let out an anguished groan. I cannot afford to be late to my first class on the first day of college. I now realize that falling asleep as soon as I got here was not a good idea since I could have used the free time to roam around the campus and get an idea of where my classes were or I could have at least met my roommate but my long drive had left me exhausted and I had wanted nothing more than to lie down on my bed and kiss my worries goodbye. Look how good that turned out to be Evelyn...
I breathe a sigh of relief as I see the class that I am supposed to attend and speed up my pace trying to avoid any unwanted attention which would be automatically granted to me should I enter late. I open the door to the classroom and am relieved to see that the class has not started yet but my relief quickly disappears as I look around the almost full classroom. I quickly scan the front seats and surprisingly find most of them occupied. Unlike most people, I actually liked sitting in the front and a front-row seat also helped on the days when I forgot my glasses at home. I trudge towards a seat in the middle of the classroom and slump in it slipping my backpack off as soon as my hands are free from the books that weigh a ton.
I look around the class taking in my surroundings. A few minutes later the bell rings signaling the start of the day and the door opens as the professor walks in. He introduces himself and starts telling us about what we will be studying this semester. After explaining the work plan for the semester, he asks if we have any questions and just as I raise my hand to ask him about our exam schedule, the door of the classroom bursts opens and a boy enters the class looking calm. The whole class looks at him but he seems unfazed by the attention and quickly explains to the teacher that he lost his way.
"Take a seat and try not to be late next time, Mr...?" the professor trails off.
"Sterling. Cade Sterling," he says with a smile and turns around closing the door.
A collective gasp echoes across the classroom as he turns around to face the students. I draw a breath as our eyes meet and I gaze into the most striking blue eyes that I have ever seen. As I continue to look at him, entranced by the gunmetal blue of his eyes, a smirk makes its way on his face. I blush having being caught starring at him but I soon realize that that is not the reason for his smirk because frankly, the whole class is staring at him. What he found so amusing about me was the fact that my hand is still raised midway like the idiot that I am. I quickly withdraw my hand and look down at my shoes as my face turns an even deeper shade of red. From the corner of my eye, I see him take a seat next to the blond in the front seat (the seat that I was too antisocial to ask for).
The Professor starts his lesson once again as the attention of the class is restored and I try my best to focus on what we are learning rather than the fact that I just embarrassed myself in front of the hottest guy in the class.
--------------------------------------------
I look around the cafeteria as I take a bite of pizza that I just bought. Its been a long day and I can't wait to go back to my room to relax and meet my roommate provided that she is not out and about. After the embarrassing encounter with Cade, I succeeded in not drawing any more negative attention. I saw him in a couple of my other classes but I did not make the mistake of meeting his eyes again so the rest of the day had passed uneventfully. And now I am sitting here trying to satisfy my rumbling stomach with a mouthwatering pizza slice.
The cafeteria is bustling with students and I am looking around trying to get an idea about the atmosphere that exists here when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around to see a tall brunette dressed in jeans and a light pink top holding a lunch tray in her hand.
"Hello. You are Evelyn, right?" she asks me.
"Hi. Yes, that would be me." I answer confused as to how she knows me.
"Oh, I am your roommate. My name is Jessica. I checked online who my roommate was going to be," she says excitedly and takes the seat in front of me.
''Evelyn here but you obviously know that. How did you recognize me?" I ask truly curious because as far as I know, I have never met or even seen Jessica before.
"When I came back last night, you were sleeping so I didn't disturb you and I had to leave early in the morning so I didn't get a chance to meet you,'' she explains.
''Oh yeah I was really tired yesterday,'' I answer sheepishly.
''That's understandable. So how was your first day?"Jessica asks.
"It was good I guess. Are you a first-year too?" I say while looking down at my plate trying to hide the blush that's creeping up my cheeks. Let's just say that I don't want another person laughing at me because of my stupidity so we are going to skip that particular part.
"No, it's my second year. I am studying art history. What is your major?'' Jessica asks taking a bite from her salad.
''I majoring in Biology," I answer.
''That's cool.''
Jessica continues to ask me questions to, as she puts it, get to know me better. I ask her about her subject and she is just starting to explain the significance of what she is studying when I hear someone from behind me clear their throat and say.
"Do you mind if I sit here?''
I turned around to look at the newcomer but I wished I hadn't because the person whom I had been trying to avoid the whole day is standing in front of me, the same amused smirk on his face.
Author's note:
Don't worry the real action will start soon.
I just wanted to say that I am not an American and I have a very vague idea of how colleges in the USA operate, so do help me out if you feel if there is anything lacking. or in any way that I can improve.
BTW anyone else had any embarrassing first day experiences? If yes, do tell.
