The next day
I wake up to my alarm going off. I hit the snooze button and close my eyes again. When the alarm goes off for the second time I climb out of bed.
An alert pops up on my phone and it says. First day of work.
A smile spreads across my face. "I'm looking forward to my first shift at the school." I say out loud to no one.
I just wish Cole was here.
Heading to the bathroom I strip off my clothes and climb into the shower. I quickly was my hair and body before stepping out of the shower. Grabbing the towel from the rack I wrap it around my body and then wrap the second one around my long brown hair.
Walking into the bedroom I search the closet for an appropriate outfit to wear to school. I pull out a knee length black skirt and a white button up blouse with black flat shoes.
My phone starts to ring and I see cokes name pop up on the screen. Swiping my finger across it I accept the call.
Me: What's up Cole?
He chuckles at the way I just answered the call.
Cole: The sky? He's quiet for a moment before saying. I want to wish you good luck on your first day at the school. I'm sure you're going to do well. You'll have to tell me everything when I see you tonight.
A smile spreads across my face.
I would like that a lot.
Me: I can't wait. Cole, we're having dinner at my parent's place tonight. I invited Amalia, Braelynn, Bo and the kids. I want them to meet my family.
Cole: Sounds good. It's been awhile since I've had dinner with your family. It's going to be weird eating there without your brother's though.
Me: I know, but it's their fault that they're not part of the dinner as they are now doing horrific stuff with an unknown person. I want to know who's pulling their strings.
Cole's name is being called by a female.
Cole: I have to go. My cousin is calling me. I'll see you tonight. Bye, Julia.
Me: Bye, Cole.
He ends the call and I continue to get myself ready for the day.
There's a knock on the door followed by a female voice saying. "Julia, are you awake?"
"Yeah, you can come in, Amalia." She opens the door and looks around the room. "I thought I heard a male voice."
"You did. It was Cole. He wanted to wish me luck on my first day at school."
She walks over to the bed and sits next to me. "You'll be protected at the school. A few guys and I will be patrolling the school. We got the clearance from Ms. Hyde. She wants to keep her school as safe as possible. Besides, the school board couldn't turn down the request of the new security company that's taking over a majority of schools across the city."
"I'm guessing one of your cousins own this company that we're talking about?"
She nods. "That's all the information that I'm going to give you today. Let's grab some breakfast before we go to the school. I want to see the layout and the best position of your classroom from my vantage point." Amalia stands up and walks over to the door. She opens it and waits for me to stand and lead the way to the kitchen.
When we get to the kitchen there's a small buffet on the table with sausages, bacon, eggs, cooked tomatoes, pancakes with maple syrup, waffles and cereal in containers.
A group of men are waiting at the side of the table as I serve myself first. I fill the plate with waffles and chocolate topping with ice cream. I walk away from the table and sit outside.
Amalia sits next to me and then the table starts filling up with the guys that will be going to the school with me. She looks around the table at each man and tells me their names. Each one nods at me, letting me know who she's talking about.
I'm not going to remember everyone names.
Growing up I kept mistaking a lot of people for someone else and my peers didn't like it because they thought I was dissing them which I wasn't. I just wasn't that interested in knowing who they were.
At the end of the day they couldn't care less about me, because my head was put on a stick by Cole being my main bully at school. It's funny how life can change in an instant and you're falling in love with the one person that ruined your teen years. People do grow up eventually, but when they realise the mistakes they've made it can be too late.
Cole wasn't too late for his apology for me, but with the things happening in my life right now. I'm glad that I have him by side getting me through everything. Without him I would be complete mess.
The car pulls into the parking lot of the school. I climb out and head in the direction of the staffroom with Amelia at my side. As we walk down the hall she scans it and makes sure that everything is clear for us.
Opening the door to the staffroom I walk in and am greeted by the other teacher's. They introduce themselves before looking at Amelia. "Who are you?" The gym teacher says.
Ms. Hyde walks into the room. She smiles at Amalia and I. "Hi, Julia, Amalia. Can I have a word with you two outside?"
"Sure," I say, following her out of the room with Amalia beside me.
She looks around. "I'm going to show you the entire school so you have the entire layout in your head and where you can set up a few of your men. When we get your classroom, Julia the bell will ring. I will lead you to the hall where you'll meet your class and then lead them back to the classroom."
"Okay," A smile forms on my face as we walk around. A few students greet us as we make our way through the school.
Just as we make it my classroom door the bell rings. I enter the room quickly and put my bag in the second draw. Walking outside I smile at Amalia. "I'll see you after school."
"Sure," she hugs me and then waves as she gives out orders to the men that came to the school with us.
I follow Ms. Hyde to the hall and as soon as we enter I hear the announcements for the day. Ms. Hyde steps forward and introduces me to the entire school.
Walking over to where my students are seated I wait until my year are called to leave the hall. When it is I lead them to the classroom. I wait for my class to be seated before I clear my throat and look at them. "Good morning, class. This morning we're going to play a game of getting to know each other. I want you to tell me your name and a fact about yourself that no one else knows. I'll go first. I'm Miss Harris. This is the first time I'm teaching in the US. The last school I taught at was on a small Island."
"Holly shit." A girl in the front row says, "You're the woman that was on the Island during the Tsunami. I heard you saved the life of a little girl."
My class start whispering about it and I watch as the girl pulls her phone out of her pocket and shows the video to her peers.
I wasn't expecting my class to find out about it.
