chapter 15: things could have been different

Stella takes Ben to that room full of video games in the house, she turns on the light and lets him in.

"Your playroom?" Ben smiles "yup" Stella says.

"your dad said you don't like people looking touching your stuff" Ben says "maybe I'll make an exception" Stella says "for me!?" Ben says, Stella smiles "for you" Stella says calmly.

"wow, I didn't expect that one... maybe you have a heart underneath all that coldness" Ben says "don't get too excited" Stella says.

Ben looks around "Woah, you have some really interesting things here" Ben says looking at the collection "it took me years to get all this" Stella says.

"Why didn't you ever tell me you liked video games?" Ben asks "and did I happen to tell you something?" Stella says "you're right, I just think it's a shame" Ben says.

"Why?" Stella says "think about how many nights we could have spent playing games as kids" Ben says, Stella thinks.

"I think we had more in common than we thought" Stella smirk "I wish I had known this side of you before..." Ben says, he approaches her.

"things could have been different...I would like it if you opened up to me" Ben says, Stella looks at him "Well...but they weren't" Stella says she takes a game.

Ben sighs, she shows the cover of the game "you work at this company, don't you?" Stella says "yes, I worked on programming this game" Ben says, Stella smiles.

"How do you know?" Ben says "I don't know if you know but you get credits for your work, like your name in the game credits and things like that" Stella says, Ben chuckles "true, I had forgot that" Ben says.

"You do a great job, you have a cool job" Stella says "thanks, I know it's not like being a lawyer but..." Ben says, Stella rolls her eyes.

"stop, being a lawyer sucks compared to" Stella sits on a sofa in the living room, Ben sits next to her "what are you saying? Being a lawyer is like... top in terms of status" Ben says.

"if you like what you do" Stella looks down, Ben looks at her thoughtfully "I'm only a lawyer because, it was convenient, but it's not what I always dreamed of doing" Stella says.

"What do you want to do?" Ben asks he takes another piece of cake from the mug in his hand "well... this" Stella points to the shelves "games!?" Ben smiles.

"Yeah kinda...here" Stella gets up and takes a notebook and hands it to him.

A notebook full of drawings, characters and story drafts that she had created "wow this... it's incredible" Ben says "No, it's just nonsense but maybe it could become something" Stella says.

"It's something, amazing!" Ben says impressed "really?" Stella aks "yeah, your drawings were always amazing I remember from school" Ben says.

"do you remember?" Stella says "of course, how can I forget" Ben looks at her "thanks" Stella says.

"You know what? We can make this work...I can take your ideas to the company, I'll show them to the guys and maybe they'll buy the idea" Ben says.

"what?" Stella says "Stella, you have great ideas, and I'm already working on it, I can help you, we can.... work together" Ben says, Stella laughs and takes the notebook

"us? work together? Forget it" Stella says "come on, it could work out, I know we two don't get along very well in life, but maybe at work..." Ben says.

"at work it would be even worse, this idea is terrible" Stella says "you're terrible at taking risks!" Ben says "oh really" Stella shakes her head.

"yes, you've always done that, create this comfort zone and don't try to leave it" Ben says "I don't create a comfort zone" Stella says "Oh yes, you created a lonely comfort zone with a job that you hate" Ben says.

"Actually, there's no comfort in this, it's just a lonely zone with a job you hate" Ben says, Stella laughs.

"and who are you to know what's best for my life?" Stella says "I'm the guy who's inviting you, it doesn't mean I know what's best, I'm just trying to give you more opportunities" Ben says.

Stella smiles "no, I remember our work in science classes, they always went wrong, we were terrible at working together" Stella stands up.

Ben and Stella leave the room "ok, I'll give you some time to think" Ben says, the two start to climb the stairs.

"I don't understand you" Stella says "why?" Ben says "we made it very clear that after this weekend we don't even want to see each other's faces, and now do you want to work with me?" Stella walking down the hallway.

"yes" Ben says "did you realize we would see you almost every day?" Stella says "yes" Ben says, Stella stops and looks into his eyes in surprise.

"I would also earn a commission for your good work" Ben smirks, Stella rolls her eyes and continues walking.

"it wouldn't be the same at school" Ben says "I'm not sure" Stella says "we're not kids anymore" Ben says he stops in front of his door "it's noticeable" Stella stops at her door.

"So why do we act like we still are?" Ben asks "I don't know...I think you're the problem" Stella messes whit the mug "Oh yeah, I think it's you" Ben smiles.

"It's pretty obvious that we drive each other crazy" Stella smirk "good crazy or bad crazy?" Ben asks "I don't know Ben, the last few days I haven't been....thinking straight" Stella says.

"Me neither, I just wanted to do something about it" Ben says looking at her, Stella takes a deep breath leaning against the door, she smiles looking at the mug.

Ben smiles and he thinks about taking a step forward towards her "Too bad it's late" Stella says, Ben leans against his door "I don't think so" Ben says, Stella makes a thoughtful face.

She takes a deep breath shaking her head "good night Olsen" Stella says in a dry tone closing the bedroom door.

Ben looks at the closed door and sighs, leaning his head against the door frame.
