Forgetting
"You okay in there, Dipper?" Mabel knocks at my door. I rub my eyes and yawn in a groggy tone. I didn't get enough sleep last night. Not after what had happened "I made pancakes for breakfast." She added as if it were going to make anything better. "Dipper, you've been in there the entire morning. You gotta come out now!"
"In a minute!" I lie. I've been using that same response for over an hour now. I sit up on my bed, legs crossed, rubbing at my eyes again; I can't stay in this room forever. I get up, opening the door to Mabel's warm smile.
"Good Morning, sleepy head!" She cheered, bringing up a plate of pancakes to my face.
"Morning, Mabel," I reply in a much more depressing tone, walking to the bathroom to freshen up. I wash my face a couple of times with cold water. And every time I do, I hoped that all of my stress would wash out with it and I would forget about everything that was worrying me. But forgetting something is never easy. I cringe at the thought of Wendy getting married to someone else and it only makes my insides boil when I think about it even more than I should. Mabel is right, I should get over her. After all, it's been so long since I've seen her. She must have forgotten most things about me. So why haven't I forgotten about her?
Wendy was my first ever actual crush. I've always looked up to her. She was amazing in every way possible; no wonder I still haven't forgotten her. I sigh, leaving the bathroom and sitting on the kitchen table. Mabel hands me the plate of pancakes and I silently begin to eat it. "Feeling any better?" She whispers to me as I take another bite out of it. I nod, carrying on eating. "You sure?" She continues to question.
I groan "I'm fine!" I snap at her.
"Alright, I was just checking!" She snaps back at me in an equally loud voice.
Candy sits down with us, placing a bowl of cereal in front of her and giving a mug to Mabel "Here's your coffee."
"Since when did you start drinking coffee?" I look suspiciously at her.
"It's Mabel Juice." She replies flatly while taking a sip. "Me and the girls are going to visit Soos today. You can come if you want," she puts her mug down and adds "After you stop acting like a big Dingus." She crosses her arms and looks away from me.
"I'm sorry Mabel. I just had a lot of stuff on my mind. I didn't mean to act up like that," I say apologetically.
She looks back at me, her angry tone softening a bit "Fine..." She sighs and I hug her "I forgive you, Dingus. Just don't act so jerky like that again."
"Promise." I smile, letting her go. We all get dressed and leave the house and I notice Mabel taking a plastic carrier bag with her. "What's that for?" I raise my eyebrow.
"You'll find out." She gave me a smug smile as we left the apartment together. Getting into Candy's car, I fasten my seatbelt and rest my head on my palm, staring out of the window again. Mabel's sat at the front with Candy who's driving so Grenda was sitting next to me, texting on her phone. As the car starts, Mabel puts on a pop song that's blasting out of the speakers. The girls sing along to it but I shuffle a bit more down in my seat so that no one could see that I was in this car as well.
Soos had moved out of his grandma's house after he had gotten married to Melody. He now lives somewhere in Oregon, not in Gravity Falls, but somewhere else. When I think about it, he did have his reasons for moving out of this town. Who would want to stay here after what had happened?
It took a long two and a half hour drive but we had finally arrived. Candy parked outside a small, nice looking house which I presume was Soos and Melody's house. Mabel was the first to get out of the car; she walked happily to the front door and then, followed her two friends. I got out, too, with my hands in my pockets and we waited as Mabel rang the doorbell. We all stood there for a solid one minute, waiting for someone to answer the door until it finally did.
The door swung open and we were all surprised when we looked around and couldn't see who opened it. "Hewwo?" A voice broke out and we frantically looked around until we all decided to look down only to find a knee high little boy staring up at us with big eyes.
"Wrong house..." I tell Mabel "You sure you have the right address?"
"Nope. This is definitely the right house," Mabel assured me, taking out a piece of paper from her pocket and showing it to me.
"But this kid! It can't be the right hou-"
"Who's at the door, sweetie?" A lady's voice called from inside the house.
"A bunch of peoples!" The boy replied, running back into the house. He returned shortly, dragging along a familiar looking woman. It was Melody. She looked a bit older than the last time we saw her, much more mature probably. She smiled when she saw us and welcomed us all into the house.
I looked around; there seemed to be a lot of picture frames hanging from the wall. And a few of them even had us in it. This made me a bit more certain that this was Soos' house. "This is a nice place," Mabel commented as we all entered the living room to see a man sat on the sofa playing video games and the little boy scurrying to join him. But when he finally glanced at us, he paused his video game, put the controller down and got up from his seat with a kind of childish grin spreading on his face.
"You guys finally made it!" He exclaimed in excitement, rushing in front of Mabel and I.
"Yup!" Mabel smiled, "Our summer back to Gravity Falls wouldn't be complete without you, Soos."
"Aww, thanks," he blushed. We all take a seat on a sofa (There wasn't any space for me so a sat with the little boy on the carpet) and started to catch up. It was a long time since I've talked to Soos. He was like my best friend in Gravity Falls. Then again, I didn't want to talk to anyone after the last time we came here. Talking would be remembering. And I didn't want to remember; I wanted to forget. "So, how's life been for you two?" He asks.
"Oh, fine," Mabel waves a dismissive hand "It's all just been school and work and boring stuff." Then she gets out something from the plastic carrier bag she was holding. It turned out to be something wrapped in glittery wrapping paper "This is for you, little guy..." She hands it to the little boy that's sat next to me. He eagerly accepts it, unwrapping it hurriedly by ripping the paper to shreds to reveal what was inside was a bright red and green turtleneck sweater.
"What do we say now, Stan?" Melody reminded her son.
The boy looked up at Mabel with a big, happy grin and said "Fank you, Mabew."
"You're welcome you lil gumdrop, you..." She squeezed his cheeks with her hands. He giggled and then with his present, he ran upstairs, probably to his room.
"You know, you really shouldn't have bought anything for him, Mabel. You'll spoil him" Melody said.
"Don't worry about it! The sweater was hand made by yours truly, anyway!" She winked.
"Come to think of it..." I say, slapping my forehead with my palm "I should have bought something, too. Soos, I didn't even know you have a kid!" I'm embarrassed because after so long, I come to him empty handed.
"It's alright, dude. We haven't talked in a while anyway." Soos replies.
"Luckily, Mabel always comes prepared!" My sister teases, nudging my shoulder and winking again. We all carry on talking, telling each other how we've gotten on with our life and all throughout, I couldn't help wondering how Soos must be feeling about all this. After all, he was there when it happened. He was there when both Stan and Ford were killed by that monster. He must remember all of it. How could he live without remembering it every day of his life?
But what made me wonder the most was the fact that he named his own son Stan. Why? Didn't it hurt him every time he looked down at the little kid, and suddenly all the memories of the man he thought so highly of would come flooding back? Was this a way of him dealing with it? I stood up, excusing myself from the group to go to the restroom. Melody gave me some directions and following them, I went upstairs and locked myself in the bathroom.
Mabel's POV
"Everyone! I ordered pizza!" Melody called from the other room.
"Yes!" Soos cheered, adding a fist pump "Reuniting with you dudes and pizza! Could this day get any better?!"
"What's taking Dipper so long?" Soos' wife came back into the living room and sat down.
"I don't know," I reply "He has been acting weird lately..."
"Is he sick? Maybe he needs something." She was suddenly worried.
"I don't think he's sick or anything." I assure her "It's just...coming back here this summer's been hard for him." It's been hard for both of us. I know how he must feel, because I feel the same way. But I can't let it get in the way of everything else; if I'm not the one to cheer him up, then who will?
"I get it." Soos suddenly says "I get what I need to tell him." And with that, he gets up and heads upstairs.
(A/N I've had so much homework so you probably know why I couldn't update in a long time. *SPOILERS AHEAD* I know in the actual show, it ends with Soos being the new owner of the Mystery Shack and Melody helping out but since in this fanfiction Stan and Ford presumably does during Wierdmageddon, Soos moved out of Gravity Falls and eventually marries Melody and settles in another town in Oregon.)
