First Day Problems
The teacher stood in front of the class, "Ok, we are going to have a good year this year. Let's start by introducing ourselves. Starting...." She points at Katie. "With the one next to the window."
Katie sighs and looked away from the window. She then stood up, "My name is Katie. I am the student body president. I have a sister. That's all." She sat down.
"You're not going to tell us her name?" The teacher asked.
Katie looked out the window again, " You will find out in a while."
Still smiling the teacher said, "Ok. You behind her. You're next."
Alyssa stood up, "Hello my name is Alyssa. I'm co-captain of the cheerleading squad and I look forward to seeing all of you at the pep rally." She sat down.
"Okay and behind her." The teacher points at Emma.
She stood up, " My name is Emma. I'm a student here. That's it."
The teacher finished the rest of the row and went to the second. "The girl next to Katie. You're next."
Kayla stood up, "My name is Kayla. I don't want to be here like all of you. I want to go home and sleep. That's all." She sat down.
"Young man behind her."
Colby stood up, "My name is Colby. I just moved back from Texas and Kayla and Katie are twin sisters." He sat down.
The girls both looked at him and said, "Snitch."
He mouthed back to them 'bite me.'
"Oh, so you two are twins?" The teacher asked.
Katie answered, "Yes."
"You're the first teacher that hasn't figured it out," Kayla added.
"They look just alike," Colby said.
"Just with different clothes," Emma said making Colby look back at her to shut up.
"And different personalities," Alyssa added.
"Ok ok. Next student." The teacher said. She was embarrassed that she made that mistake. She looked at the girls more and saw it was painfully obvious that they were. Now she wants to change the topic.
But Kayla then said, "I guess she couldn't use common sense."
She was no longer embarrassed. She was mad, "That's it. Principal's office now." She said as she pointed to the door.
"On the first day, wow," Alyssa said as she was impressed that Kayla was getting better at getting sent home.
"Office now," She continued to point to the door waiting for the girl to stand up and leave. But she couldn't tell the difference anymore between the girls. This time she was looking at Katie.
Katie looked at her sister then back at the teacher, "Who are you talking to?" Katie thought the teacher could tell them apart. She did a moment ago. It's not like they switched places or something. She even has our name on the floor sheet.
Kayla joined in, "Me or her?"
The teacher pointed ta Katie. "Her."
Emma said, "But that's Kayla." Emma loves when teachers get confused. It's great knowing something they don't And using it above their heads.
The teacher looked confused, "Oh, Well--"
Colby jumped in and pointed at Katie, "No that's Katie."
"What?" The teacher couldn't remember which girl she wanted to kick out. She was to busy with trying to get their names and faces right.
"Hold on. Katie didn't even do anything," Alyssa said as she looked at the teacher.
"Wait, who did you want again," Emma asked as she pretended to not remember.
The teacher thought of an idea, "The one who was talking. If you were talking raise your hand."
Emma, Colby, Kayla, Katie, and Alyssa raised their hands.
"All of you out," once again she pointed to the door.
"WHAT?" Emma yelled. Clearly shocked that she's being sent out. She didn't do anything wrong.
Colby grabbed his stuff, "Man, all I did was tell the truth." Walked out of class.
"Fuck," Alyssa said under her breath as she grabbed her things and walked out of class.
Kayla on her other hand was happy to go. "Bye," she left the room.
Katie picked her things up, "I hope I get to go home." And walked out of class.
Emma was still sitting in her seat. She has never been sent to the office before. And she still felt like she did nothing wrong.
"OUT," the teacher yelled at her.
"But I--"
"Out before I call security...."
Emma grabbed her things walked out of the classroom slamming the door behind her.
When she reached outside of the principal's office her friends were sitting on the bench. Katie closer to the door, Alyssa to her right, next to her was Kayla than Colby on the edge with a space between them. She decided to sit between Colby and Kayla.
"So, we're just gonna sit here?" Kayla said as she looked at everyone.
Katie stood up, "I'm leaving."
Emma didn't think this was a good idea but thought she must have had a good reason to want to leave, "Why?"
Rolling her eyes she said, "I shouldn't be here. I did nothing wrong. I'm going to the gym and wait for my next class."
"What if she called the office and told them we were coming?" Alyssa said.
"She's not that smart. If she was, she would have called security to get us, not let us walk ourselves. She would have known we were sisters and she would have known Kayla's reputation. That Bitch is clearly new and unqualified." Katie said as she crossed her arms with an attitude.
Emma stood up, "But Katie--"
"I'm leaving," She walked to the gym.
"Bitch has a point, "Kayla stood up. "I'm leaving." She thought about going to the field. It's her favorite place to hang out.
"Can I come too?" Colby asked as he looked up at her as he continued to sit on the bench.
"I don't care."
He stood up and they both walked to the field together.
Alyssa looked at Emma, "Library?"
She shrugged her shoulders, "Sure."
Katie was in the gym sitting under the bleachers writing in her diary. She's been writing in it since the fourth grade. While reading over what she wrote, she laughed at one of her story's. Someone knocked on one of the bars behind the bleachers. She looked up and closed her book. Standing there was a man in a black suit.
"Hello," he smiled at her.
She puts the book in her bag, "Let's get this over with." she stood up. "My name is Katie. You work for the police or something similar and you want me to follow you.."
"Th--," he tried to talk but she cuts him off.
"Principal's office. Should have known. Let's go" she walked passed him.
"Well that was--"
She interrupted him again.
"Different? I read a lot of books and when this happens it can either go two ways. You either kidnapping me or I'm going somewhere with you in this school. You can't kidnap me. Their cameras all over the school. So I went to the second one."
He shook his head, "No, I meant--."
"Easy? It was either going to happen or not. I was prepared for both." she continued to walk.
The man walked behind her as they made their way to the principal's office. When she entered, she saw Emma and Alyssa already sitting on the couch.
"Hi," Emma said as she only glanced at Katie. "They got you too huh," Alyssa said.
The man in the suit walked in a bit further as Katie asked, "What are you guys doing here?"
Alyssa shook her head, "We don't know."
Katie sat next to her. The door burst open and in came Colby and Kayla in handcuffs.
"Let me go," she demanded.
"Man, why am I in handcuff? I was trying to get her off you." Colby said as he tried to get his hand free.
The men that walked them in took the handcuff of them and told them to sit down. They did. The man that brought Katie to the office said a few words to the principal as if whispering. The principal left.
He walked to the door and locked it, "OK here's the deal. The five of you are here due to an issue that you all have in common."
"And what is that?" Kayla said as she leaned back.
"We all don't want to be here," Katie said causing everyone to laugh.
The man was holding an envelope, "No. it is because of--" he takes out a photo and shows them. "This person."
They stopped laughing. The photo was of Eva. well not just of her it was all of them but Eva in the middle.
Katie was the first to speak, "What about her?"
He puts the photo down, "We found her body."
"Body?" Emma burst out.
"I thought she was just missing," Alyssa added as the group became nervous.
"That's what we thought as well. But we found her body three blocks away from her home buried underground. The whole was covered with flowers. As if a funeral was given to her," when he said this the group was completely silent.
"You are here because all of you are the only ones that saw Eva last before she went missing."
Colby then jumped in, "your missing one you know."
The man cleared his throat knowing he made a mistake in saying all of you, "He is not cleared to speak with us yet."
Emma said in a low voice, "So he's alive?"
"Of course. What makes you think he's not?" The man asked.
Emma stopped talking. She didn't think anyone heard her. Alyssa spoke for her.
"We haven't heard from him in over a year. Rumors started and he just ended up disappearing," She explained.
He puts his hand in his pocket, "So you all just assumed... he was dead?"
Katie and Kayla both said, "I didn't "
Emma and Alyssa said, "I did"
Colby said, "I didn't care."
The man held out his hands as if telling everyone to calm down as they shout their responses at once, "We are getting off topic. What I need to know is what happened that night." He takes out a tape recorder.
"We told you everything that day," Colby explained. He was ready to go and really didn't want to talk about that day. No one did.
"Why are you asking us about it again?" Kayla asked.
"That was the old caseworker. I want to get it straight from your mouths. Not from an old piece of paper. So," he pushed the recorder closer, "what happened?"
Emma started, "Eva's parents left for a week or two. Why? We don't know. We decided to hang out at her house two days before school started."
Alyssa added, "We were having fun. Dancing, playing games, just hanging out. We were happy we got to spend that time together before school started."
"So this was around??" he looked at everyone.
Katie answered, "Two almost three years ago."
He nods his head, "Right."
Then Colby said, "Some people were, I guess playing a prank on us. So they broke the windows. The next day we had them fixed."
The man continued to nod his head, "And was Eva with you?"
"Yes," everyone said at once. They all wanted to get this over with. But they didn't want to seem guilty either.
"The next day Eva found her parents alcohol. She drunk every bottle," Alyssa said as she played with her sleeve a little.
"Why didn't you stop her?" he asked.
"WE DID," Katie yelled then calmed down after remembering what they were talking about. "Well... we thought we did."
"We took all the liquor and hid them. But when we weren't looking she found them and drunk them all," Emma said as she tried to make eye contact with him. Trying to make the lie seem legit. But she could only get to his chin.
"By the time we noticed she was a hot mess and it was too late..." Alyssa added.
"She was dead," he said cutting her off.
"NO," Katie once again yelled. "She drunk everything and she was falling all over the place."
Alyssa continued, "We had her sit down to eat something before she passed out."
Katie saw he was about to speak. He was about to say dead but she stopped him. "NO, not dead... let us finish."
He stopped talking.
"She was sleep, we constantly checked on her until we fell asleep as well. When we woke up she was gone."
Emma added, "We thought she was playing a trick on us so we waited a few hours. She didn't come back. We got worried and called the police."
" So, that's your story?" he asked while looking at everyone on the couch.
"Yep," Colby said ready to go.
"Can we go now?" Kayla asked.
"Just one second," when he said this everyone held their breaths. They thought he caught them or something, "......her parents said Eva's not a drinker. She would never touch that stuff."
Smiling a little Kayla said, "They clearly didn't know Eva the way we do."
Katie then said, "Eva hated being around her parents or anyone in her family. She could never be herself. That's why I think she went crazy that night."
The bell rings as the man in the suit said, "Okay."
Alyssa saw everyone walking in the hallway and asked, "Are you gonna keep us during second period?"
Emma and Colby said they had math, Katie Debate, Kayla, P.E, and Alyssa was an office worker.
Katie then said, "If you keep us too long you can mess with our attendance, grades, and our time."
The man laughed at her as he was reading some of his paperwork, "Says who?"
She stood up, "Said the student body president of this school." She smiled at him, "Me. I know these things and if you think for one second the school is going to allow you to mess with our precious time of learning and have our school dropped a letter grade. Well, I hope you can deal with hundreds of angry parents that will take your ass to court. Just because you wanted to hold students hostage."
He didn't say anything.
Colby laughed and said, "Balls in your court."
He looked at everyone. In a low voice, "... you may leave."
Katie was still smiling as she grabbed her things, "Thank you." She left and the others quickly followed her.
They were walking down the hall and Kayla looked back to make sure they were far enough away from the Office and said, "We all need to talk." In a low voice.
"How about lunch?" Emma suggested.
"Whatever," Katie said as she turned the corner.
"I'm in," Alyssa said as she went into the bathroom.
Colby said, "Fine." As he and Emma walked to their math class together.
