The Mask
"Good evening Hiroko-san" I greeted my boss as I walked into store to start my shift.
"Good evening (Last name)-Chan" he greeted me and I headed to the lockers to chance my clothes.
"Oh, (Last name)-Chan do you have a moment?" I nodded
"S-Sure" I followed him to his office and took a seat on the chair.
"(Last name)-Chan, what is the matter lately? You seem really pale? Are you troubled by personal problems?" my eyes widened and I knew it was pointless to lie.
"I... yes, I indeed have some problems regarding my personal life" I admitted
"You have been asking me for money here and there, do you have a debt on your shoulders?" I felt embarrassed to talk about it
"I do... since my sister died 6 months ago I am dealing with the bills and some other stuff"
"To be frank you are currently in a critical situation" I nodded while I sunk my hands in the fabric of my uniform.
"Yes... the debt is really high and it's growing every day... he noticed I was desperate and offered me a deal.
"I feel sorry for such a young girl like yourself, there for I like to offer you a better job in one of the night clubs I own." My eyes looked at him curious
"R-Really?" he nodded and started playing with his pen
"I own a really fancy place in a different part of the city, it's a club just for the rich." That sounded like a bad idea but if the payment was good then I did not mind working at such a place.
"Currently I am short on a waitress and since I found a new girl for this shop, I can offer you the position in the other shop." I nodded
"You would really...." He nodded
"Of course, the payment is better and if you do a good job you get a good tip at the end of the night" I was grateful to him
"Thank you! I really appreciate the offer and gladly accept it! I will do my best!" he grinned satisfied.
"There is one condition though... will you promise me to agree?"
"Of course!"
"The condition is:"
He was right; the shop was really just for rich people and high society. Everyone in that club reek of money, but my boss forgot to tell me one last detail though, or rather he left it out on purpose... the customers who came to the club were not only rich... they weren't humans, they were ghouls.
The job was pretty tuff, and just as I expected the customers were all wearing their nose high. But despite the fact that I knew what they are, I was not afraid of them. Of course I've seen the news and read the articles in the newspapers but to me they were living beings just like myself. I knew that they ate humans but at the other hand I was eating animals, if they could only survive on our flesh then that's how it was. It was not up to me to judge a living being because of their choice of food. I felt no fear as I served them, of course the dishes were all based on human ingredients but I felt no disgust towards it. Other waitresses showed a fearful expression on their faces as they served the food to the ghouls, I could not understand why they found it so uncomfortable. I quickly realized that I was the only one who had no problem with the fact that the customers were ghouls, and the dishes I served were human body parts. I earned very well and got good tips, the ghouls in the club noticed pretty fast that I was the only one who wasn't afraid and that attracted their attention towards me. Everyone at this place was wearing a mask to hide their true identity, so were the waitresses. It was pretty convenient since I was just a student and afraid to expose my face.
I was working for a good 3 months in the club, earing pretty good money and finally I was able to pay my debt that I owed my landlord and the hospital. It was extra busy tonight and I was called in earlier to help out at the bar. As I heard from a few customers tonight was an auction, were human slaves were sold to other ghouls for a high price. I could indeed see some of the "pets" that were accompanying their masters today, I felt sorry for them but there wasn't anything I could do for them, my job was to endure and not to play hero.
I placed the ordered drinks on a table were the host of the auction and some of his assistants were sitting.
"Good evening, I deliver your order" I said bowing my head formally and handing out the drinks to the right person.
"Thank you dear, you look lovely tonight" a female voice complimented me
"Thank you my lady, you look studding in this dress" I complimented her back and bowed once again before I turned around
"Enjoy your evening and don't hesitate to call if I can do anything else for you" the group nodded and the female spoke again.
"It's a pity that you have you have to work, we could surely use the company of a lovely girl like you here" I thanked her and suddenly someone joined the table, passing me with a dark aura that I could swear I felt before.
"Oh there you are Ren-Chan <3" the female sang his name as he took his seat.
"Itori, I told you not call me that here" he hissed. I was still standing at their table and listened to them while my eyes observed the male that was wearing a mask which resembled a crow.
"Should I call you Yomo-Chan instead?" she rested her chin on the back of her palm as she teased him.
"Yomo-Chan?" I uttered to myself and suddenly a cold shiver run down my spine.
"Little lady, I would like to order a thorn bowl (cocktail contained of blood and nail tips) for him please" I was stunned for a second but snapped out of my thoughts as she looked at me.
"S-Sure" I bowed my head and walked away towards the bar to order the drink. My heart was pounding really fast for some reason, I could not get the name out of my head that this woman called Itori mentioned... was it just a coincidence? The guy called Yomo... I was confused and tried to clear my head, there was no way it was him. He was a friend of my sister... if he was really a ghoul she would have known and told me. "Would she really have told me if she knew?"
"Here is your order!" the bar lady placed the drink on the counter and I took it.
"Thanks.." I headed back to the table and continued to discuss the possibility in my head.
"Here is your drink sir" I said placing the cocktail down.
"Thank you sweetie <3" Itori said with a smile and placed a tip in my hand.
"That is for you little one <3" I bowed my head
"Thank you very much my lady" she giggled
"No need to thank me, instead you can promise me that you pay a visit to my shop sometimes" I looked at her with wide eyes.
"I am the owner of a bar too, if you like we can share a drink together and have some girls talk" I was speechless to what I should reply, her offer made me feel relay uncomfortable.
"Itori!" the guy they call Yomo raised his voice, she glared at him.
"What? I like her, why shouldn't I invite her?" he kept quiet and just crossed his arms.
"Sorry sweetie, he is quite a handful and so stubborn." I once again was speechless all I could do was smile and hum.
"Here, this is my card, contact me if you need someone to talk <3" she placed her card in my hands and winked an eye
"T-Thank you... my lady" I bowed my head and excused myself
"If there is anything else I can do for you please call me" I said and walked away.
"What the hell was that about Itori?" the guy next to Yomo asked
"What's wrong U-Chan? I was just having some fu-" Yomo placed a bite of the cocktail in her mouth to silence her.
"Ren-Chan!" she gulped down the mixture and stared at Yomo.
"It was your order after all" he replied in a monotone voice.
The night was really long and I finished cleaning up the place. I changed into my normal clothes and headed towards the exit, it was early in the morning since the sun was already up. I walked out of the club and headed towards my apartment, today was Saturday and I had no school. I passed by a flower store and decided to pick up some flowers for my sisters grave. It has been 9 months since she left, slowly but steady my life began to bend in the right direction again. I tried to live with the pain in my chest and accepted the things as they were since I could not change them anymore. I was getting used to being all alone. I entered the sanctuary and walked the long path towards the grave of my sister and my parents. I placed the flowers down on the grave and prayed, after that I stared telling my family about my current life and job, actually everything what I was doing or how I was feeling. Once I was done I stood up and said my goodbye's. My body turned around and was ready to leave when suddenly someone was blocking my way. My eyes widened as they stared at the crow mask that the guy from last night was wearing. I knew right away that this name wasn't just a coincidence...
"Yomo...-san" I whispered as the wind blew through my hair, the moment he removed his mask confirmed his identity.
"It's been a long time, (First name)"
