LGBT, or GLBT, is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. A lesbian woman is one who is attracted to women. A gay man is one who is attracted to men. A bisexual person is someone who is attracted to people of genders both the same and different to their own. Transgender is a term used to describe someone who does not conform to society's view of being a male or female, the sex which they were assigned at birth.
Next, I want to talk to you about Gender Identity. How can someone realize they belong to the LGBT community? Some may be sure about how they feel, and others may take more time to be sure of their sexual orientation. Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong age to realize you are lesbian, gay or bisexual. Sexual orientation does not need to be fixed forever – for some people it will be, and for others it will be fluid and it might change over time.
We need to understand why someone can be LGBT. Newest scientific researches have shown that homosexuality is a common variant of biodiversity. Dr. Bruce Bagemihl has written in his book "Biological Exuberance" that homosexuality has appeared in about 1500 kinds of animals. We can't deny the appearance of homosexuality in nature. Finally, scientists from many prestigious organizations have come to the conclusion that homosexuality is a natural sexual tendency, an expression of human sexual diversity. It is not a disease.
However, not everyone acknowledges that truth, which leads to Social Prejudice.
In Vietnam, there are still prejudice and discrimination about this community. The first reason is limited and false understanding of LGBT in Vietnam. As you can see from this chart, 48% of people believe that LGBT is a disease and can be cured. 57% believe that LGBT is just a social trend. LGBT people are surrounded by gossip, fear of being isolated and violence. They are put under stress of confusion and crisis. It is not uncommon for transgender people to keep their secrets as they may get attacked by rude languages. Also, traditional value standards create discrimination for LGBT people. 77% of parents would be disappointed if their children belong to LGBT community. 58% of parents will prevent children from playing with people in LGBT community. Many people have refused their children or threatened to suicide.
Fortunately, nowadays, many people have a positive attitude towards LGBT community, and many social movements have been taken.
This comes from the increasing knowledge and understanding about the nature of LGBT, mostly through successful media. The two most-recognized international LGBT symbols are the pink triangle and the rainbow flag. The rainbow flag does not depict an actual rainbow. Rather, the colors of the rainbow are displayed as horizontal stripes, with only 6 colors – red at the top and violet at the bottom. It represents the diversity of gays and lesbians around the world.
This rainbow flag can be seen in many social movements for civil rights promoting LGBT rights in various places around the world, and clear results can be seen. In 28 countries/territories partnership rights or marriage have been officially extended to same-sex couples. In Vietnam, legally, although not officially recognized, same-sex marriage is no longer banned since 1/2015. The law was also passed in the same year, which allowed transgender surgical people to re-register their names and gender according to their wishes. From the reservations in the 2012 to the colorful parade in Viet Pride festival 2018, today's LGBT Vietnamese community seems to be stronger, and yet dare to speak more to protect the sentiment, happiness of themselves with the support of many other people in the society.
So, how can we help more and more LGBT people to come out and have the same rights as any other person? As LGBT doesn't belong to any type of illness or diseases, society needs to respect the diverse forms of each individual, respect the rights of LGBT people. We also should promote and spread the true knowledge of LGBT on the media, social networks so that all people can have the right awareness. Avoid the portrayal of images of LGBT people based on "gender pattern" prejudices. This will contribute to the reduction of prejudice, discrimination against the LGBT community in Vietnam.
