Chapter 9
Jacks POV

"So now what?" I asked as I walked up to Kay. We were currently waiting for y/n and Tom to be ready for the ride.
"We just wait?" She said but it came out more of a question.
"For what? I just realised a flaw in our plan. How do we actually get Tom to fall off? I mean the saddle is loose. But we still need something to cause motion so that he will fall off." I pointed out and we went silent.
"Well... If Nightingale has to jump over something then it would fall off from that right?" Kay asked. I nodded, "Okay so there is bound to be logs and rocks in the paddock that she would have to jump over."
"Would y/n just get Tom to go around it though?" I sighed and Kay huffed.
"You're right... fiddle sticks." She 'cursed'.
"Hmm... maybe we could startle Nightingale or something? If it looks like an accident then y/n won't suspect anything. Done." I concluded and Kay nodded. I was about to discuss the matter further when I suddenly felt arms wrap around my shoulders and I heard y/n's voice in my ear.
"What are you guys talking about?" She spoke and Kay and I jumped in fright.
"Whaaaaat? Nothing..." I lied..... badly...
Y/n gave us a suspicious look, "Sure. Sure." She unwrapped her arms from around our shoulders, "Jack, have you finished with Cinnamon and Cupcake yet?" She asked. I nodded in response, "Okay great. Well let's get going then." She concluded as she walked back over to Missy. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"That was far too close for comfort." I huffed and Kay nodded. Now that Kay had loosened the saddle the plan was in motion... we just needed a way to startle Nightingale...

Kay's POV

I mounted Cupcake and walked over to y/n and Tom. I saw that y/n had a slight pink tint in her cheek and and prayed to God that she was just hot or something. Maybe she had a cold? Just not... because of that...
But it didn't matter. Now that Jack has loosened Tom's saddle, all we needed was something to spook Nightingale.

Tiny time skip brought to you by the realisation y'all just had as you realised why in the last chapter the saddle didn't come off at all because both Kay and Jack thought that the other had loosened the saddle 😂 . (If you didn't see it before you see it now anyway)

Jack and mine's conversation stopped abruptly as we saw a huge branch stick up out of the grass and sent dirt flying up in the air. Nightingale got spooked and shied to the side sharply making Tom fall off.
What? The saddle was still on? I had no time however to dwell on the thought because our plan had worked anyway.... that was until Nightingale smashed into Missy and y/n fell to the ground. I felt my body run cold as Nightingale ran off.
"Y/N!" I yelled out as Jack and I quickly ran over to her aid, "Are you Okay!?" I asked frightened. That wasn't suppose to happen! Y/n wasn't suppose to get hurt! Only Tom!
"I'm fine. Just go get Nightingale." She instructed, shaking off the obvious pan she was in. I shared a glance with Jack and could see that he didn't want to leave y/n either. But the firm look on her face meant that she wasn't going to argue and I turned Cupcake around to go on after Nightingale.
"What was that?! Y/n wasn't meant to get hurt!" Jack huffed annoyed, "Stupid Tom. He just has to ruin everything. This is all his fault."
"Your right." I agreed, "But we need to find Nightingale or else y/n will surely kill us." I looked around as we entered an opening in a cluster of trees were I saw Nightingale run into, "Nightingale?" I called out.
"Nightingale! Come on. Here girl." Jack called. We heard the snap of a branch and I jumped from fright. I turn to my left to see Nightingale grazing on some grass around 20 meters away.
"I found her!" I called to Jack who had started to go in the other direction to find her. He turned around and came over to me, "Hold Cupcake." I told him as I dismounted her and gave him my reins. I cautiously walked over to Nightingale, being careful not to scare her or anything.
I clicked my tongue to get her attention and she lifted her head up and looked at me. I sighed once I made my way over to her and picked up her reins, "She isn't hurt is she?" Jack asked. I sucked in a breath as my eyes widened in worry. What If she was hurt too!? Oh, that would be horrible if both y/n and Nightingale were hurt!
I carefully lead her over to Jack, watching as she walked to see if she was in any pain and I sighed in relief when I realised she was fine, "She's not hurt. It's okay." I lead her over to Cupcake and jumped up onto the saddle. Jake and I lead her out through the trees into the open again.
"I don't get it." Jack spoke, "Why didn't the saddle fall off? Didn't you loosen it like I told you to?" Jack turned to me a little annoyed.
"What? You didn't tell me to do it! I thought you did it!" I creased my eyebrows together in annoyance.
"Why would I do it?! I thought you said you were going to do it!" He argued defensively.
"Don't you remember!? I came up with the plan and I told you to undo that saddle!" I shouted and Cupcake tossed her head at my tone but I paid her no mind.
"You never said anything of the sort!" He argued back. I opened my mouth to argue again but then shut it once I realised that y/n would be in listening rage.
I stopped in front of y/n and my face ran cold as I saw red liquid on the ground and Tom crying in pain, "What's going on?" I asked a little frightened as y/n rushed over to us and took Nightingale.
"Tom's been seriously hurt. We need to get him back to the house immediantly." Y/n explained as she took Nightingale over to Tom and got her to lay down so Tom could get on, "Okay come on Tom. I know it hurts but please. I need you to get on Nightingale so we can take you back to the house." She spoke softly to Tom.
He shook his head frantically, "No! I can't move! It hurts too much!" I swallowed a lump in my throat and looked over to see Jack had the same expression and we both knew that our plan had gone horribly wrong and way too far.
"I know it hurts. But it's going to get worse if you don't trust me right now Tom. You need to trust me Tom." Tom looked up at y/n and together they stood up. I heard Tom muffle a cry of pain and I felt my heart beating out of my chest and my throat tighten. Y/n sat him in the saddle before sitting in front of him. She clicked her tongue and Nightingale stood up, "Jack. Bring missy back to the house."
Jack nodded in response, still slightly paralysed in fright. With that y/n turned Nightingale around and road off to the house. With a shaky breath I turned to Jack as he walked over to Missy and jumped off Cinnamon to grab his reins. Once he was back on Cinnamon I looked down at my hands. I didn't know what to think. Half of me felt scared and sorry for Tom but the other half was just numb. Because isn't this sort of what we wanted to happen?
"L-let's get back to the house." Jack spoke with a shaky tone and I nodded. We walked back to the house because it would be too hard to canter with Jack leading Missy along too. We hadn't done anything like this before.
Once we arrived back at the house, Jack and I put the horses away in their stables. Y/n had just let Nightingale graze around the house without her bridle on. Once I closed and locked Cupcakes stable door I looked at Jack. Neither of us really knew how to feel about this whole thing. I mean we wanted Tom to get hurt but not this much...
"Lets just get back to the house." Jack concluded and I nodded as I followed him up the stairs and into the house where we found y/n in the kitchen.
"Oh hey. Did everything go smoothly with putting the horses away?" Y/n asked us.
"Yes." Jack and I both answered flatly.
"How is Tom?" Jack asked.
"He is fine. I was just making him some soup. Are you guys hungry? I could make you some sandwiches?" She asked.
"Uh no thanks. We're not that hungry." Jack answered.
"Okay. Well I'm a little busy looking after Tom so could you two maybe water the garden for me?" Jack and I nodded as we turned and walked away.

Y/n's POV

I poured Tom's soup into a bowl and walked to his room. I opened the door to find him already asleep. I smiled as I quietly put the bowl down on his bed side table. I realised that his window was shut and it was a little stuffy in here so I walked over to it and opened it up. I cringed as it made a squeaking noise. I heard Tom stir and I looked over to see him slowly open his eyes.
"Y/n?" He mumbled.
"Hey. Sorry to wake you up. I was just opening your window. It was stuffy in here." I apologised and he smiled at me softly, "I also made you some soup. In case you were hungry?" I pointed to the bowl and Tom sat up in bed.
"Thanks. It looks great." He smiled as he reached over and put the bowl on his lap. He hummed in delight as she sipped his first spoonful.
"Well uh, just call out if you ever need anything Okay?" I smiled. He nodded, returning the smile but he quickly winced and his hand shot to his leg. I went to help him but he quickly spoke, "It's fine. You don't need to worry about it. I'm sure it'll stop soon." He tried to comfort me but I merely raised an eyebrow at him and gave him an unamused look.
"I've had injuries like this before and I know how much it hurts. So don't try covering it up." I fixed up some of his bed sheets, "Are you warm enough?" I asked and he nodded, "Okay. So remember if you ever need anything-"
"I know. I know. Call out. Now will you stop worrying?" He joked and I rolled my eyes.
"Are you saying that you don't want my 'get better soup'?" I put a hand on my waist and Tom quickly shook his head.
"NO! Uh I mean... no. I want the soup. Please don't take it away." He pouted and I laughed.
"Okay then. Well dinner won't be ready for a couple of hours, but I'll let you know when it is ready, and I will bring it up here to you because obviously, you coming down is not an option." I explained and he nodded mumbling a small thanks.
I turned and walked out of the room. As I closed his door I turned around and lent against it. I ran a hand through my hair and gripped it's roots as I let out a stressed sigh.
This is all my fault.
I should have been paying more attention! Why wasn't I!? If I had then he wouldn't be hurt. But he is. Really badly and it is all my fault. I felt the heavy feeling of guilt weigh on my chest as I stood up straight and walked away. I walked outside to bring in the clothes from earlier.
I brought the second basket of clothes in and put it on the table with the other and began to fold the clothes and group them. Jack and Kay soon came back in, "Oh Jack, Kay, could you both take these clothes and put them in your draws? Once your done could you also take Tom's clothes into his room? Just put them on the desk I will put them all away later." I asked.
Jack and Kay grabbed their piles of clothes and walked off without a word. I sighed as I put the last shirt on Tom's pile and stared at it blankly. Small images of Tom's blood soaking through his pants invaded my brain and I found myself lost in the same images over and over again, each time getting worse and trailing off from the original scene and turning into those from nightmares.
"Y/n?" My head shot up to see Jack looking at me worriedly, "Are you alright?" He asked me.
"Oh yes. Of course. I was just lost in thought about... whether or not I fed the horses." I lied. Jack walked up to the pile and picked it up.
"Okay then..." he didn't really seem to believe me, "So I just put them on the desk?" He clarified and I nodded and gave him a small smile. Jack looked at me as if mentally telling me he can see straight through my fake smiles. I sighed and gave him an actual smile and he nodded.
He walked away to Tom's room. I decided that I wanted to go and check up on the horses so I walked out of the house to the barn.
