Chapter 5

Y/n's POV

- - - - - - - - -

I heard Tom slam his door closed from upstairs and sighed. I breathed in and out to relax and I stood up, "Are you finished Darling?" I asked Kay who looked as though she was about to burst into tears. She hated yelling more then anything since there was a lot of screaming, yelling and crying when we found out about Mother and Father, which is why I rarely ever yell. She just nodded her head.

I took her bowl and placed it in the sink. I walked over to Jack and asked the same question. He nodded as well and I took his plate. I walked back over to Kay and kneeled down to her eye level, "Are you ok?" I asked her softly.

She shook her head and screwed up her eyes. I took her into a soft hug and stroked her soft hair, "Why is he so horrible?" Jack grumbled, "He is stuck up and annoying. He yelled at you! Who does that! You are the most amazing and kindest person I have ever met! You didn't even yell at him!" He raised his voice and I shushed his tone.

"It's ok." I smiled and let go of Kay. She sniffed and I grabbed a hanky from the bench and handed it to her. She blew her nose and I put the hanky in the washing basket, "Just relax. We don't need to get riled up over nothing. Tom is just really riled up right now. And it makes sense for him to act out. It must be hard, being moved away from your home to out here when you aren't used to it."

Jack and Kay looked at me like I was crazy, "How are you just so forgiving? I feel like punching him in the face right about now." Jack asked confused.

"Oh I feel like punching him in the face. That is a fact. But, I can also see why he is this way. So I won't." I corrected. Jack just shook his head and smiled at me.

"I wish I could be more like you." Kay said sweetly, "I want to be a better person."

"The best you, you can be is yourself." I stroked her head. She looked at me like that quote went right over her head and I laughed a little. It was then that I heard another slam and the sound of feet stomping against the wooden floor. Tom suddenly appeared at the bottom of the stair case.

"I AM LEAVING RIGHT NOW! I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU THINK! I CANNOT STAND YOU FOR ANOTHER SECOND!" he yelled directly at me. I just clenched my jaw and swallowed a lump in my throat as he stormed out and slammed the door behind him.

Jack stood up abruptly and went to the door after him in a fit of rage, "Jack no. You must sit and calm down." I quickly grabbed his wrist to stop him from running after him and doing something he would regret.

"You can't just let him go after talking to you like that!" He yelled.

"Jack. Calm down." I said softly. I could hear Kay whimpering from behind me.

"I can't. I am so sick of him." He grumbled and I let go of my hold on his wrist, "I hope he gets lost out there and dies in the bush or something." Jack went to his room and closed the door. I sighed and shook my head. Jack always had a short temper, but he would cool down soon enough.

"Y/n?" I turned to Kay, "Why do let Tom walk all over you like he just did?" Kay whispered, her voice a little shaky from the yelling.

"I don't let him walk over me. There is a limit and he will learn that soon enough. But being forceful with him will do nothing." I stated as I walked up to her and lifted her up. She clung to me like a monkey, "Now you need to go to bed." I carried her to her bed and put her down. I tucked her in and I saw how sleepy she had become.

"What are you going to do about Tom?" She asked, half asleep.

"I guess we'll have to see." I whispered and kissed her forehead, "Goodnight. I love you."

"I love you too." She yawned. I walked out of her room to the kitchen. I looked up at the clock to see that it read 8:00 pm. I decided that I should go to Tom's room to see if he left anything. I doubted that he would have checked for everything in his state of mind.

I entered the dark room and as I had suspected, he had left his hat on the top of his draws. I shook my head and picked up the hat. I walked out to the kitchen again. I walked out of the door and down the stairs outside. The cool air washing over my skin as I walked down the driveway. My eyes easily adjusted to the moonlight as I walked, I could see everything around me.

I was following the markings on the driveway that Tom had left from dragging his bag in the dust. I came to the parting of the drive way and prayed that he didn't go left. But of course he did. So I continued along towards mother and father's grave...

Once I arrived at the end of the road. I saw him laying down on the side of the drive way, asleep on his bag. I shook my head as I walked up to him. I heard his light snores as I approached. I lightly shook his shoulder to wake him, "Tom... Tom." He jolted awake and yelped.

"Ah! Don't hurt me!" He shrunk into a ball.

"I'm not going to hurt you." I sighed, trying not to laugh.

"Wait. Y/n?" He looked up at me surprised, "How are you- What are you doing out here?"

"You forgot your hat." I merely stared as I handed him his hat.

"You came all the way out here because I forgot my hat? In the middle of the night?" He sounded surprised.

"Well yeah. But it is only around ten past eight by now." I shrugged.

"O-oh... well... uh, thanks I guess." He mumbled.

"No worries." I turned around and walked away.

"Wait. Where are you going?" He asked me.

"I'm going back tot he house. Now you have your hat so my job is done." I answered. There was a silence. I turned to walk away again. I moment later I felt a hand grab my wrist softly.

"W-wait." Tom stuttered, "I-I'm sorry. For what I said before. I-I didn't mean it...." he gulped.

"It's ok. I also came just to check that you didn't get too lost. By the way. You might wanna head back that way. If you want to get back to the main road, at that cross road, you go right. So if you just go straight you should get there. It is about a 20 minute walk to the main road though. But it is up to you." I smiled and went to walk away again.

"C-can I... maybe....... c-come... back? To the house?" He asked, "If you'll have me?" I smiled brightly to before nodding.

"Of course." I smiled and he breathed out a sigh of relief, "Come on." I walked over and picked up his light bag.

"Oh no. I cannot ask you to carry that." Tom shook his head.

"It's not that heavy. And it's fine. Come on. You must be tired." I started walked and he followed behind me.

"Thank you." He mumbled as we walked.

"For what?" I asked confused.

"Everything." He smiled, "I just don't get it how you can just be so easily forgiving. I've been so horrible to you this whole time but you never got angry with me or yelled. I don't understand it... but thank you so much for it." I was rather surprised by his sudden kindness.

"Uh, thanks." I smiled at him. I could see him smile at me too. We kept walking back to the house until one of the horses neighed from afar and Tom yelped. During his fright, he had jumped towards me and grabbed onto my arm. I laughed at his reaction, "It's just the horses."

"I knew that!" He wined. I just nodded, not believing him for second. He realised that he was still holding onto my arm and quickly retracted. We finally made it to the house and we walked up the stairs. Once we were inside, I spoke to Tom.

"You must be starving by now." I concluded, "Would you like me to cut up some fruit for you? Or maybe a cup of tea or something?" I asked him. He looked at me with his mouth agape, surprised.

"W-What? Y-you- I can't make you do that. That wouldn't be fair." He shook his head, "Not after everything you have done for me."

"It's fine. What do you want?" I asked as I put his bag down and walked to the kitchen, "Also just make sure that you keep it down a little because Kay and Jack are asleep."

"...C-could I maybe... uh, have that stew from before?" I paused my movements and turned to face him. Did he just ask what I think he asked!? "If it's not too much trouble." He added. A confused smile split across my face.

"Of course." I walked over to the fireplace and picked up the rest of the stew from it." I scooped some into a bowl and gave it to Tom, "Since everyone isn't here, you can just sit down anywhere instead on the table, if you want." I told him as I gave him a spoon.

"Thank you." He smiled. What is happening? Why is he so nice? I get it that I was going to change his attitude but, did he see something while he was gone in a span of 20 minutes or something?? He sat down on one of the sofa chairs, "Is it ok if I sit here?"

"Yes. I said sit anywhere so that's fine." I smiled at him. I turned around and started to clean up the bowls and dishes from dinner.

"Woah." Tom mumbled, "Th-this is the best stew I have ever had in my life!" I turned to see he was looking down at the stew like it was a million dollars, which made me laugh, "Now I get why Kay said thank you for your amazing cooking skills." He muttered and I laughed again. He ate the stew in a minute and brought the bowl to me.

"Just put it in that side of the sink there." I told him. He looked at me for a moment before asking.

"Do you want any help? I can dry the dishes if you want." He offered. I nodded.

"That would honestly be amazing. Thank you." I handed him the washer and he stood beside me, drying as I cleaned, "If you don't mind me asking, what made you want to come back?" He didn't answer me at first. There was a silence so I added, "You don't have to answer if you don't want to." I looked over to him to see he was already looking at me.

"Oh, uh... it was nothing in particular. I just realised that it was a stupid idea in the first place. I mean it felt like it was minus five degrees out there, and it's not like I would have had any way to actually get home and Father would kill me if I actually showed up and said I ran away." He laughed a little awkwardly.

"Yeah that makes sense." I nodded and gave him a thin lipped smile. We continued in silence until it was all finished, "I should be good to put these all away now." I referred to today's dried dishes. There was a lot of them but I didn't want to ask any more of Tom. He was probably tired.

"No, no. I can stay here and help. Plus, I don't know where anything is in the cupboards and it would be helpful to know." He told me. I nodded and picked up some plates.

"Well the plates and bowls go in these draws here." I opened then to show the rest of the plates and bowls, "Cutlery goes in the top draw of the small set here and anything like soup spoons or cooking utensils go in the second draw underneath it. Glasses go in the left top cupboard up here and mugs go in the right. That is basically it and I can handle the pots and pans." I explained, "It's a lot to take in at once so you can just ask me if you forget."

Tom nodded and grabbed some glasses. He opened the left cupboard and placed them in, "That is where they go right?" I nodded and he smiled, "Sweet. I remembered correctly." He grabbed some of the mugs and put them in the correct place too. I smiled at him as he did it and I put the pots and pans in the right place. We were finished in a matter of minutes.

"Thank you for helping me." I thanked him as I flicked the washer and hung it over a hook. I looked at the clock, "It's probably time to go to bed now. We do after all, get up a five thirty to milk the cows." I muttered and Tom's eyes widened.

"Wait, did you just say 'cows'?" He sounded shocked. I nodded in response.

"Yeah. We need milk a lot and it's kind of hard to get milk around here with out owning your own cow." I laughed a little and Tom blinked a couple of times.

"Uh, okay... f-five thirty... is the sun even up at that time around here?" He knitted his eyebrows together.

"Well it starts to peek over the hilltops at around six o'clock. So it's not too dark at five thirty." I shrugged. Tom just nodded a little. He muttered a small 'okay.' And went to walk up the stairs. I followed behind him. He opened the door to his room and went inside. I opened my door but before I closed it Tom's door opened again and he poked his head out.

"Uh... goodnight y/n." I said. I smiled at him and giggled a little.

"Good night Tom. Sweet dreams." I closed my door and changed into my pyjamas. I crawled into my bed and pulled the sheets over me. I closed my eyes and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
