Chapter 10

I walked to the first pony in the pen, Missy. I stoked his face gently, and whisper to him, "Hey boy. You did really good today." He nudged me a little, "I'm fine don't worry... I'm just fine. Just a little bruise." I smiled as spoke to him. I know people would usually see it as weird, but it gives me peace to talk to the horses. They were the ones I told about my thoughts and pains with Mother and Father when I couldn't tell anyone else, and I swore they could actually understand me every time. Or at least they understood how I was feeling.

After a while of patting the horses and feeding them, I walked back into the house, "Kay? Jack? Do you want to get started on your papers?" I called out to them. I heard foot steps approaching as they came in my view. I grabbed some paper and pens. I told them to both sit down at the table. I gave Jack a topic to write about for his English and sat down with Kay to explain multiplication to her.

"So... it's kind of a quick way of adding the number to itself a set number of times?" She said as more of a question.

"Correct. That's basically the idea behind multiplication. So what I need you to do is just start going over some of these tables for numbers one to 12. Okay? And soon you'll be able to say 15 multiplied by six equals 90 easily." I concluded and she nodded. I handed her a pen as she started to fill in the gaps on the table.

"Y/n?" Jack spoke, "Is there a rough word limit for this essay at all?" He asked.

"Uh, let's just go with 200 to 300 words." I told him. I walked up the stairs to Tom's room to get his bowl from earlier. I knocked lightly before opening the door Tom was lying down staring at the roof, blowing a piece of hair off his face over and over again which made me laugh a little.

"Oh hi." He turned to me.

"Hey I came to get your bowl." I told him as I picked up the empty soup bowl, "I'll take it that you are getting bored out of your mind?" I asked him and he smiled at me and nodded.

"Is it that obvious?" He laughed.

"Well to people who aren't blind, yes." I nodded, "Do you want me to get you a book to read? Or perhaps some paper and pencils to draw? Your options are pretty limited, given your situation..."

"Oh uh yeah sure. What books have you got?"

"Well we have quite a lot actually. What genres do you like to read?"

"Umm well... I don't read that much but do you have any good books in adventure? Or something?" He asked.

"Really? I would have thought that you would have liked cheesy romantic novels." I joked as I turned to walk out, "I'll see what we have." I walked to my room and opened my door. I went over to my large book shelf and searched through it's shelves. I settled on two books that I read a couple of years ago on adventure. I walked back into Tom room right in front of mine.

"Please tell me you didn't get me one of those gross romantic books." He frowned.

"As temped as I was, no. Here are two books that you might not mind to read." I handed him the books and he read the back blurb.

"Huh. Cool." He muttered as he turned one of them back over to the front to look at the cover, "Yeah this seems cool, thanks." He smiled and I nodded.

"Ok cool. Oh right." I remembered, "I should change your bandage to a fresh one since the one you're wearing is probably dirty by now and covered in blood..." Tom nodded and I pulled the sheets off from on top of him and saw that I was correct, "Yeah that needs to be changed." I gestured to the red, soaked bandage around his leg.

I walked out to a cupboard and got out a new bandage from the stash, "Y/n! Can you check my table?" Kay called from the kitchen.

"And I've finished my essay!" Jack replied as well.

"I'll be there soon just give me a minute." I replied as I closed the cupboard door and walked back to Tom's room, "Ok. How is it feeling? Has the pain gone down at all?" I asked.

"Uh yeah it has I bit. That cream really worked." Tom answered and I nodded. I unwrapped the bloody bandage from around his shin and inspected the wound. It had stopped bleed as much as it was. The blood on the surface of the cut has thickened and hardened which meant it would heal soon.

"Ok I'm just going to get clean water and clean it a little since before I couldn't. And we don't want it to get infected..." I muttered and Tom's eyes widened in worry, "Oh it's fine calm down. I've worked with far worse then this and it was fine." I shook my head a little and Tom nodded. I walked to the kitchen and got a bucket and a clean cloth. I filled the bucket with filtered water and walked back into Tom's room.

I saw that Tom had already opened one of the books and had started to read it, "This is a good book so far. I like it." He nodded.

"Good because you will have a couple of days to read it." I said truthfully as I sat down next to him on the side of the bed. I dipped the cloth into the bucket and squeezed so that it wouldn't drip too much. I gently cleaned the bloodied skin around the wound and lightly dabbed the cloth onto the cut. After I finished I wrapped it up in the new bandage again, "There you go." I stated simply and looked at Tom with a thin lipped smile.

He was looking back at me softly with a small smile of his face, "Thank you." He muttered. There was a small silence but it soon ended by Kay suddenly breaking it.

"Y/n! It's been way more then a minute!" She called and I huffed as I stood up.

"I wish they weren't so smart some times." I joked and Tom laugh too, "So uh, enjoy the book and I will bring up dinner in a maybe... three hours? Max." I looked to the clock on the wall.

"Ok uh yeah cool. Thanks. Uh, yeah..." he grabbed the book from next to him and opened it and started reading......

"Uuuuh.... you know that's upside down right?" I pointed to the book and Tom's eyes widened. He quickly flipped it the right way up and laughed sheepishly.

"Oh uh yeah ha ha ha... my bad...." he started reading again and I nodded and walked out.

"Door open or closed?" I asked.

"Oh uh just opened a little?" He asked and I obliged.

"Good?" I referred to the door.

"Yep. Thanks." He answered and I walked out to the kitchen to Kay and Jack. I walked over to Jack and picked up his essay and went over to Kay and quickly skimmed over the multiplication table, "Yeah that looks just about right. So what I want you to do it go over these a lot ok? Get them drilled into your head so that you can easily remember them without a sweat." I told her and she nodded.

"Well the multiplying by one is easy. I know all those." She joked and I laughed.

I read over Jack's essay and marked out some misspelt words but there were only a few, "Nice job Jack. So tomorrow we might do some work on persuasive text." I handed him back his paper and he nodded.

"Ok cool. So do you want me to do some of my maths sheets now?" He asked a little annoyed since he hated maths.

"Yeah. I almost forgot. Thanks for reminding me." I teased and he hit his head on the table.

"Should have kept my mouth shut." He grumbled and I laughed. Kay was looking over the table of numbers intently so I went and sat down in a chair by a window and finished one of my books until it was time to make dinner.

Once I had finished preparing dinner I asked Jack and Kay to set the table while I got Tom's plate and cutlery to bring it to his room. I opened the door to his room to see he was fast asleep. So I just set the plate down on the side table gently and walked back out to the kitchen.

"Y/n?" Kay spoke while we were eating.

"Yes Kay?" I replied.

"Um... how long will it take Tom to get better?" She asked quietly. There was something strange in her body language which confused me slightly but I pushed the thought aside and answered.

"Well in the worst possible case, Tom's bone is just a little bruised which might take a little bit of work until he can walk. The cut is pretty bad too so I would give him.... three weeks minimum until he can walk around. However, that's only if the bone is bruised. I can't tell currently but I'll find out soon. Otherwise if it is just the cut, he should be ok in a week or two to walk." I explained.

"Right..." Kay looked down at her hands and I could definitely sense something was wrong...

"Is there something you want to talk to me about at all?..." I narrowed my eyes. Kay's head snapped up and she looked to Jack which only made me more suspicious.

"Oh no. We're both just really worried. Aren't we Kay." Jack spoke. I raised an eyebrow at his response.

"Well. The truth is that... I'm just really scared... because you could have ended up like Tom today and I don't know what I would do if that happened..." she looked down at her hands sadly and I concluded that, that was all the glances were about.

"But I didn't. It's alright Kay. You don't need to worry. Plus. You know that I'm a lot tougher then I look." I joked a little and Kay smiled.

We continued eating and I went over treatments for Tom's leg in my head in case it got worse. I was still paranoid about it. But by the looks of it's progress so far it should be okay.

After we finished I stood up and collected everyone's plates, "Kay could you-" I cut myself off as I turned around to ask key to collect the plates but she already had. I chuckled a little and we walked to the sink. I began to wash the dishes and asked Jack to dry while Kay put them away where she could with her height.

We soon finished and I walked up to Tom's room presuming he would be finished if he had woken up by now. I knocked lightly before I opened the door, "Tom? Are you finished?" I asked.

"Oh yeah. Thank you. It was great." He smiled and handed me his plate.

"Not a fan of cheese?" I asked since it was the only thing left on his plate.

"Yeah not particularly..." he cringed, "Sorry..."

"All good. We all have food we don't like." I shrugged and turned to walk out.

"Uh y/n?" I turned around to face him, "Uh you mentioned drawing before. I don't suppose you would mind maybe getting me some paper to draw on?" He asked.

"Oh yeah sure." I nodded and walked out. I walked back down to the kitchen and placed Tom's plates in the sink.

"Oh come on. We just finished." Jack whined.

"It's only one more plate." I shook my head and went to my room to get Tom his paper and pens. I searched through my desks draws to find my sketch pad. I flipped to a fresh page and and got some pens, rubbers and a sharpener, "Ok here you go." I announced as I walked into Tom's room and handed him the supplies.

"Thanks." He said with a hint of excitement.

"So did you draw back at home often?" I asked.

"Yeah I did actually. But it wasn't really something that people cared about so I mainly kept it to myself." He half smiled.

"Right." I nodded, "Well I'll put Kay and Jack to bed shortly. I guess that you probably will want some more time so, just call out when you want me to come and turn off the lights." I informed him. He nodded in understanding and I walked out.

Around two or so hours later, I had sent Jack and Kay to bed and I had started to feel tired. So I placed a bookmark on my page and closed the book in my hand. I turned the lights off as I went  upstairs to my room. I peeked my head into Tom's room to see him focussing on his drawing.

"Hey, I was thinking of turning in now. So are you good to go to sleep now?" I asked him. He jumped at the sudden sound and turned over his sketch book quickly so I couldn't see the page.

"Y/n! Oh uh yeah yeah." He nodded, "Yep sounds good. Ok..." he closed the book and placed it on the side table before shuffling under the blankets and lying his head on the pillow.

"Goodnight Tom." I flicked off the lights.

"Goodnight y/n." Tom replied and I walked out the door before walking into my room, closing the door and turning off the lights. I climbed into bed and lied down on my bed, exhausted after all the events today but unable to close my eyes no matter how tired I felt.

For over an hour I just lied there in the dark looking up that the ceiling. I could hear the faint hum of crickets outside my bedroom window. Every time I closed my eyes and would feel myself falling asleep, the site of all the blood and Tom's strained cries of pain would flash in my mind. I grumbled in annoyance.

"Stupid brain. Go to sleep." I shoved my face into my pillow, "sleep." Nothing, "Looks like I'm not sleeping tonight." This wouldn't be the first time this had happened except usually it's because of nightmares a have of mother and father...

I opened my bed side draw and pulled out a half melted candle and some matches. I lit the candle and sat it on my side table as I got out a book to read it again for the 30th time already.
