Chapter 1

Your POV

I woke up to the sun's bright shining light in my face. My eyes fluttered open as I sat up in my bed. It was a rather peaceful morning which I didn't expect all things considered-

"Y/nnnnnnn!" I heard Kay's voice cry out.

Well so much for peaceful.

I groaned and rolled out of bed, "Coming Kay!" I walked out of my room and down the wooden stairs. Once I was at the bottom I was greeted by a sudden impact of Kay running to me and tackling me into a tight hug.

"Y/n! Jack's being mean to me!" She cried.

"I was not!" Jack retaliated from around the corner. I bent down to Kay's five year old eye level.

"What did he do?" I asked softly.

"H-he s-said that my dress w-was ugly." She cried. She was wearing he favourite pink dress with flowers on it. I shook my head and hugged her.

"Don't pay him any mind Kay. Besides since when do boys have any sense in fashion? You are the most stylish girl I know." I booped her nose and she giggled, "Come on, I'll make some breakfast." She grabbed my hand with her small one and we walked out to the kitchen.

"Cry baby." Jack sneered.

"Meanie." Kay snarled.

"Why do you have to always go to y/n when ever you go all sooky?" Jack rolled his eyes. Kay stomped her foot.

"I am not sooky!" She wined. I cleared my throat and Jack looked up at me before he could say anything. I gave him a threatening look and he looked down at his hands.

"Sorry Kay..." he mumbled as if he had rehearsed that line for a week. In all fairness he had to say it a lot.

"That's why I go to y/n." Kay sassily nodded her head and climbed up to sit on the table. I shook my head and laughed as I walked over to the fire place to make breakfast, "Y/n?"

"Yes Darling?" I answered.

"Can we please have eggs again today?" Kay asked.

"Only if you go and get the eggs from the chooks your self." I answered smiling. A bright smile split across the small girl's face and she jumped out of her seat.

"Will you come with me Jack? I can't always reach." Kay innocently asked. Jack sighed and stood up and followed her out of the kitchen and outside to the chicken pen.

I washed the soaked dishes from last night as I waited and dried the rest of the plates. I prepared the table and by then Kay and Jack had returned, "There were five eggs this morning." Jack told me as he handed my the eggs in his hands. Kay handed my the one egg she could fit into both of her hands.

I began to cook them on the pan and waited, "Y/n? Can you teach me how to subtract more numbers today?" Kay asked me.

"Of course I can." I smiled at her adorable face.

"Oh! Can you give me a long division test today too?" Jack asked me. I nodded to them both. I was only sixteen but I was teaching my brother and sister things that they miss since they can't go to school.

This war has been the worst time of our lives. I had to leave the city and come here to protect and live with my siblings after father died in a bombing at mother's hospital... so I had to take up the role of the mother in my family. I had left school and come back here to the farm. It's not connected to the outside world so we are safe from the threats and bombings.

I still miss my life back in the city. But I know that my family needs me. Kay was only five and Jack was still going on ten. Since they were homeschooled because father and mother couldn't afford to send us all to the city, all of this was nothing out of the ordinary for them. Well schooling wise anyway...

"Y/n! Can I have my eggs sunny side up?" Kay asked sweetly.

"What's the magic word?" I teased.

"Please?" Kay added. I nodded and put her egg on the plate. I gave Jack his eggs too and sat down myself. We ate in silence until Jack spoke up. He looked as if the question had been burning into his mind for a while now.

"What is going to happen?" He asked me sadly.

"What do you mean?" I asked confused.

"After all of this war? What is going to happen to us?" He looked at me, "You will go back to the city and we can't afford to go to school. Mother and father are-"

"NO!" Kay screamed and put her hands over her ears, "DON'T SAY IT! DON'T SAY IT! DON'T SAY IT!" She cried, "MOMMY AND DADDY ARE FINE! THEY ARE OK!" She screamed.

"NO THERE ARE NOT! THEY ARE DEAD!" Jack yelled back, "Stop denying it!" Kay had thick tears running down her face.

"No they are not!" Kay cried. I couldn't take it anymore.

"ENOUGH!!" My loud voice boomed making both of them stop abruptly and looked at me frightened. I breathed in and out before continuing softly, "Kay Darling, How about you go and play with horses?" I smiled sweetly at her. She sniffed and nodded. She got up from her seat and walked outside.

"Y/n I didn't mean to-" I cut Jack off by hugging him.

"Shh." I cooed. He started to sniffle as he tried to hold back tears, "Listen to me. I am not going to let anything ever happen to you or Kay. I am not going to leave you and go back to the city after all this." I pulled out of the hug and cupped his cheeks, wiping away his tears with my thumbs.

"I-I just d-don't want to be sent to an orphanage y/n. I don't want to." He cried.

"Shh... That is not happening. I am going to be here for you. And I am not ever going to leave you as long as I have a say. You understand me?" Jack nodded and sniffed, "Ok. And please, stop talking about it in front of Kay, she is too young for all this just now. You need to be more sensitive towards her ok?" He nodded. He hugged me again and I returned it.

"Sorry." He mumbled.

"It's ok. I'm upset too." I answered.

"How do you stay so strong? I never see you cry." He asked me.

"Because I know that there needs to be someone who keeps this family together. I will be ok. But I need to focus on you two." I smiled sadly at Jack. He was very mature for his age when he needed to be. I guess he silently takes up the role of the man in the family when he needs to.

"So you are like mother then." Jack looked at me. My heart tugged at his words but I managed to smiled a little.

"Sort of I guess."

"Do you think Kay will forgive me if I apologised now?" Jack asked me sweetly.

"Maybe just give a minute or two." I answered, "She might just be too riled up right now." Jack nodded in understanding. I stood up and collected the plates. I carried them over to the sink and began to clean up, "Can you dry for me?" I asked Jack.

He quickly jumped off his seat, grabbed a cloth and stood by my side, "Of course." He smiled making me laugh, "It worked!" He smiled triumphantly.

"What did?" I raised an eyebrow at him confused.

"I vowed that I would make you smile today after that, and I did." I smiled brightly and ruffled his hair with my wet hand, "Ah! Your hand is wet!" I he wined and repeatedly rubbed his hair to try and dry it.

"That was the whole point." I remarked. We laughed at each other until Jack stopped abruptly. He looked out the window with a strange expression, "What is it? What are you looking at?" I walked over to the window that he had wandered to. There was a black car driving down the drive way towards us.

"W-what's happening?" Jack asked afraid.

"Jack." I looked at him. He looked at me waiting for me to tell him what to do, "I need you to quickly get Kay from outside and hide inside you room. You hear me? It might be nothing but don't come out until I come and get you." I told him. He looked afraid but he quickly ran off.

I saw him and Kay come running in and rush to the stairs, "Wait. Y/n? What are you doing?" Kay stopped.

"Listen to Jack. It'll be fine." I smiled at her. She was reluctant but did what I asked. Once I heard the door shut I walked out of the house to see a man standing next to the car wearing formal attire, "Is there anything I can do for you sir?" I asked him.

"Miss y/n l/n?" He asked me.

"Depends who's asking." I replied.

"I am Nickolas Frayed." The man said, "I was good friends with your father. I understand that you are living here with your brother and sister?... I am terribly sorry to ask this of you, but Dominic Holland's," the name caught my attention, "son had to flee the city and we were in need of a safe place for him to stay. Your father had said before he... that it would be possible for Thomas to come here if needed?"

I still was a little wary of the man but I knew of father's relationship between the Holland's, "Do you have any proof." I asked suspicious still. The man brought out a letter from his pocket and gave it to me. I opened it. The later had Father's hand writing.

Dom,

I know if these troubled times and I am aware of your families position in the city as my daughter is also there.

I understand that this war may make it's way to you. I know that Thomas may need somewhere safe to stay. If it comes to this. Please know that he is all too welcome to come and stay at our estate.

I pray that you and your family will remain safe. All the best.

-Y/D/N (your dad's name)

P.S. If by any chance that I am not around at this time of need, please give this letter to my daughter y/n who would have returned.

I let out a shaky breath in seeing my father's handwriting and when I read it in my head it was as if I could hear his voice again. I looked back up at the man who was looking at me with a sorrowful expression.

"I am truly sorry for what happened to your parents." He told me.

"No matter." I smiled sadly, "And we will gladly look after Thomas if that was my father's wishes." I agreed formally. The man nodded and walked back to the car. He opened the door and a young boy stepped out. I saw he had brown hair and bright brown eyes. While he seemed very attractive, his facial expression showed that he did not want to be here. I had to hold back a laughed at his disgusted expression. He walked over to me and held out a hand to shake. Which I merely raised an eyebrow at.

Why? Because there are particular ways to shake hands with someone. If their hand is at a normal 90 degree angle, that person sees you as an equal. If that person's hand is held out palm up, they see you in a higher authority to them. If their palm is down, it means that they see you in a lesser sense. As if they are more important than you. Just something I learnt from my father when I was little.

Fun fact. His palm was down when he went to shake my hand.

"Is there something wrong?" He asked me confused.

"Are you going to fix that." I asked him.

"Fix what?" He asked still confused.

"Your hand positioning." I answered simply, "You see it is counted as acceptable to greet people as your equal." I said blankly. He knew what I was talking about and he looked down at his hand. He rotated it slightly so that his palm was no longer facing down. I then shook his hand. He did not seem to pleased with my attitude so far. Did I care? Not one bit. So I merely walked past him, ignoring his presence and I walked back over to Nickolas, "Are there any bags of clothing?" I asked.

"Uh yes. Just one." Nickolas said. He went to retrieve it. He put it down in front of me, "You know, you look like you mother but act just like you father." He said quietly to me and I cracked a smile, "Thank you for this." He held out a hand to shake. I took it simply because it was at an equal position.

"No worries." I smiled. He got back into the car and drove off. I turned around and went to walk back inside.

"Aren't you going to get that?" Thomas referred to his bag.

"Oh, I was under the impression that it was your bag." I said innocently, "If it were then you would simply pick it up your self." I sassed and walked inside and closed the door behind me.

So far, I'm not going to lie, while this Thomas seems very attractive, he seems like a total asshole.

No matter. I'll fix up his attitude before this week's end. Because there is no way in hell that I am going to look after some stuck up, rich, narcissistic, city kid.
