Italics- Signing
"Deku, hurry up." Katsuki signed at his childhood friend. They were going to be late if he didn't hurry up. They had exactly two minutes before the first bell rang.
"Sorry, I dropped my schedule." Midoriya signed back.
It was both boys' first day at their new hero school, UA. Seeing as Katsuki was deaf, due to his quirk, there were a lot of people that doubted he'd make it in.
He had fun proving them all wrong.
He had started to lose his hearing in elementary school and has nearly lost all of it by this point. He could still hear extremely loud things, like his own explosions, but he was basically completely deaf.
He had learned sign language early on, when he first discovered that going completely deaf was a likely possibility. During middle school it became harder for him to interact with the other students, seeing as only one or two even knew how to sign 'how're you?', but Midoriya managed to learn asl with Katsuki, which helped them become close friends again.
Katsuki rolled his eyes at the green haired boy. "We have the same schedules, you could have just used mine." He pointed out, not slowing down and trying to still get Midoriya to see his hands from behind him.
"I can't see your hands when your back is to me." Midoriya mumbled to himself, knowing that Katsuki wouldn't be able to hear him.
When they eventually reached their classroom, they were instructed where to sit. Midoriya was placed right behind Katsuki, who only sat behind the invisible girl. There was probably a reason for that. He had a clear view of the front, seeing as he had to rely solely on sight for class.
Their teacher seemed to be late that morning, so Katsuki turned in his chair and started to sign with Midoriya.
"Where do you think our teacher is?" Midoriya asked him.
"I don't know." Katsuki answered, not really caring where his teacher was.
"Whoa! What're you guys doing?" A new voice spoke up, but only Midoriya heard it. He turned his attention to the amazed redhead that had walked over to them. Katsuki followed his lead, also turning now that he knew what had caught his friend's attention.
Before Midoriya could respond, Katsuki flicked him off. The green haired boy lightly shoved his shoulder and sent him a glare. "Don't be rude, he just wants to know what we're doing." He explained.
Katsuki was used to the nasty side comments and watchful eyes that usually followed him while he signed with anyone. He had just assumed the redhead was the same.
"How was I supposed to know that? I'm deaf, remember?" Katsuki signed back sarcastically.
Midoriya ignored him and turned back to the redhead who was still watching in silent awe. It was kind of cute if he was being honest. "Kacchan's deaf, so we sign to communicate." He explained with a smile.
The other boy's eyes widened in surprise. "Whoa, really?"
Katsuki was pretty good at reading lips, so he knew what his response was. "Yes, really." He mocked. "Never seen a deaf person before, dumb hair?"
(Sorry, i don't think there's a sign for 'shitty' with this meaning so you gotta deal with dumb)
Midoriya gasped at him. "Don't call people names! That's mean." He signed at the blond sternly, only receiving an eye roll in response.
"I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he didn't sign something nice." The redhead said awkwardly.
"He called your hair dumb." Midoriya said apologetically. Katsuki's hands sparked when he noticed that his childhood friend had betrayed him.
"Whoa! Dude you're quirk is so manly!" The redhead shouted when he saw the small explosions coming from his palms.
Katsuki squinted at him, then turned to Midoriya. "Did he," He paused for a second. "Did he call my quirk manly?" He asked, clearly confused.
"Yeah, he did." Midoriya confirmed with a small smile at the strange compliment. He looked over at the redhead. "What's your name?" He asked.
"Oh yeah," he said, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment for never introducing himself. "I'm Eijirou Kirishima! Nice to meet you."
Midoriya smiled and shook Kirishima's outstretched hand. "I'm Izuku Midoriya, and he's Katsuki Bakugou." He said back. He then turned to Katsuki and signed Kirishima's name.
"I'm calling him dumb hair." Katsuki signed with a shrug.
Midoriya face palmed while turning back to Kirishima. "He's going to call you dumb hair apparently."
"My hair is not that different from his though!" Kirishima exclaimed with a slight whine in his voice.
The green haired boy laughed at him. "Kacchan likes nicknames and signing dumb hair is easier than trying to fingerspell Kirishima. Did I also mention he's incredibly lazy sometimes?"
Katsuki hadn't been able to catch what Midoriya had said, which pissed him off. He kicked the smaller boy's desk, gaining his attention once again. "Trying to start a fight, Deku? You may have a quirk now, but I'd still win." He signed angrily.
Midoriya rolled his eyes at the insult, not being bothered by them anymore. "Calm down Kacchan, I just told him that signing dumb hair is easier than fingerspelling." So it was a small lie, but Midoriya really didn't want to get in trouble for fighting on the first day.
Katsuki scowled at him, knowing he was lying. He always knew when Midoriya was lying, he was terrible at it after all. He turned back to the front, leaving his childhood friend to talk with the smiley redhead.
He laid his head on the desk, just waiting for the teacher to show up. Since he wouldn't be able to hear when he came in, he knew Midoriya would tap him or kick his chair to let him know.
And a few minutes later a light tap to his shoulder had him sitting up in his chair. He caught sight of a dark haired man with a tired looking face at the front of the room. He was talking to the class, but obviously Katsuki couldn't hear what he was saying.
He raised his hand, gaining the attention from the teacher. He saw his lips move to shape the word 'yes?'.
"I'm deaf. I can't hear you." He signed, already annoyed that his homeroom teacher seemed to forget that detail.
Realization crossed the man's features and he immediately started to sign. " I forgot about that, sorry. What's your name?" He asked, needing his name sign and he might have forgotten which student was deaf.
Katsuki rolled his eyes before spelling out his name and then his name sign.
The teacher nodded and then spelt out his own name and sign. "I've never had to sign in class before. If I forget, just let me know and I'll try to fill you in on whatever I was talking about, okay?" Aizawa signed to him.
Katsuki nodded.
By now most of the class was watching their silent exchange and putting the pieces together, but were still pretty confused. While Katsuki was signing with the teacher, Midoriya took the liberty to fill in his new classmates.
"Kacchan's quirk is explosion and because it's so loud, he went deaf in middle school." He explained.
The rest of the class went by smoothly. Katsuki was just happy that the actual teacher was signing and he wasn't using an interpreter. The one he had in middle school was constantly screwing up and signing the wrong information.
"We're going to be doing some basic quirk tests today, just to gauge where everyone's at." Aizawa explained, still signing for Katsuki as well. "Everyone head to the locker rooms and get changed into your gym uniforms."
Katsuki and Midoriya walked together, signing as they went. "Kacchan, what am I going to do? I can't control my quirk yet and if I come in last I'm going to get kicked out!" Midoriya nervously signed to his friend.
"You'll be fine, Deku. Don't break your bones completely on the first test." He signed, knowing that it was what Midoriya would probably do anyway.
"I'm totally going to get kicked out."
