Preferred habitat: Moorlands, prairies, taiga forests, flatlands, snowy fields, alpine meadows, mountainous plateaus, rocky mountains, temperate grasslands, snowy savannas, boreal birch forests, highlands, alpine grasslands, shrublands, steppes, boreal forests, temperate woodlands, scrublands, icy mountains, redwood forests and wetlands.

Bio: The sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) is a large species of deer native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Their range is distributed in much of South Asia as far north as the south-facing slopes of the Himalayas in Nepal, Bhutan and India, in mainland of Southeast Asia including Burma, Thailand, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, Taiwan and South China, including Hainan. In the Himalayan foothills, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and eastern Taiwan. Recently, some populations were also introduced to Yellowstone Island since 1940s and they managed to survive in their new home, despite being preyed upon by many predators, including wolves. They are now found throughout the moorlands, prairies, taiga forests, flatlands, alpine meadows, mountainous plateaus, rocky mountains, temperate grasslands, boreal birch forests, highlands, alpine grasslands, shrublands, steppes, boreal forests, temperate woodlands, scrublands, icy mountains, redwood forests and wetlands of Yellowstone Island. On Yellowstone Island, large herds of sambar deer are common due to many predators around. They are also one of the most largest species of deer in Yellowstone Island.
