Within Sight

I urged her forward with my heels. I rushed her to the rail, where we ended up third. I turned her out a bit so we could try and meet the pacemaker. She turned wide and shortened her stride and started to collect her head. I let a little bit of rein go and she took it, extending her head and stride to full length again. At the turn, I eased her up a bit and she agreed but we sped right back up again on the backstretch. I saw the horse in second with their bright blue silks start to fade a bit. They still kept a lead on me though until I urged my horse again. Then finally within sight at the end of the stretch was the leader in orange silks. I moved my horse to the inside rail and started to ease her up but also making sure that we were gaining ground. Deep into the stretch and turning for home, I started to let the rein go again. I sat up higher in the saddle, bent over her neck and coaxed her faster again. She had another gear and she pushed on closing the gap on the leader. I was within range of the leader and I gave my horse almost all of the rein. She sped up to the leader and I saw her look him in the eye. Their eyes stayed locked until a furlong from the finish. I didn't move, but I felt her body beneath me surge forward. She galloped away leaving the old pacemaker to catch the dirt flying from her hooves. She crossed the finish and I eased her up. She threw her head back defiantly and I started into the first turn again before I could being her to a halt. Once I got almost all of the rein back, I led her toward the stands. She bobbed her head again and soon Tom cantered out on a horse and grabbed her rein. I saw him rub her head and she started to calm down. I sighed, my arms and legs hurt from constantly changing from speeding up to easing back. But I sat down in the thin saddle and an overwhelming sensation came over me. The wild filly won against bred colts, I knew this horse was something special.
