Yawn (A Short Story)
Jade tried. But she failed. Before she could stop herself, she let out a big yawn in the front of the entire class.
Mrs Garden who was Jade’s teacher stopped reading aloud from a book and stared out to the class.
‘Who has just yawned when I was in the middle of reading a very important chapter in the book?’ Mrs Garden asked.
The whole class turned to look at Jade who had gone rather red. There was no way that Jade could hide her redness.
Mrs Garden by now had noticed that the class were looking at Jade.
‘Jade! Was that you who yawned?’ asked Mrs Garden.
Jade slowly raised her eyes towards her teacher. By now, Jade was very scared.
‘Yes Mrs Garden, sorry Mrs Garden.’ Jade replied.
Mrs Garden stared at Jade. The girl who she thought was an angel and was kind and helpful. Was in actual fact, able to get bored rather easily.
‘I am very disappointed in you Jade. This is an important part and you felt like it was right to disturb the story in this way. Since you are so bored, why don’t you leave the room then?’ Jade’s teacher replied.
Jade by now had gone rather pale and teary. But in a calm manner, she said.
‘I am not bored Mrs Garden.’
Mrs Garden stared at Jade. This girl was puzzling her.
‘Are you tired or feeling unwell?’ she asked.
‘No Mrs Garden.’ Jade politely replied.
Mrs Garden knew that the girl was too scared about the outcome to say anything else.
‘Stand outside Jade. Wait till the rest of the class has gone.’ Mrs Garden said.
For Jade, this was the last thing she wanted to hear. By now, tears had formed and were now ready to pour out of her eyes.
The whole class were laughing at her. The whole class.
Jade shakily stood up and walked out of the classroom and stood in the corridor.
‘Right then class, after that disturbance. We have fallen behind in the story.’ said Mrs Garden.
Jade stood and watched the parents start to arrive in the playground. She could hear Mrs Garden’s voice but she couldn’t hear the story.
For poor Jade, it wasn’t the first time that she had been sent out of the class for yawning.
‘First it was art, now this!’ thought Jade as she stared down at the floor.
Jade was correct. She had indeed been sent out of her art class for yawning.
‘It isn’t fair. I do try hard not to yawn.’ thought Jade as she twirled a little part of her long black hair around her fingers.
Then, at that moment. The loud bell rang to signal the end of the day. This loud noise startled Jade.
The classroom door burst open and students from Jade’s class were filing out.
‘Hey! Look at Miss Yawner!’ yelled Nick at his friends.
Nick and his gang burst out laughing. Jade tried to ignore them but she couldn’t.
Nick was the class bully and believed that the world revolved around him.
Jade didn’t want to be too late leaving. Otherwise, her Mum would start to get very anxious.
‘Jade. You can come in.’ said Mrs Garden.
With a heavy heart, Jade took a deep breath and walked into the classroom. She walked to her desk and picked up her things before walking over to Mrs Garden’s desk.
Mrs Garden looked up from her book as Jade came over.
There was a silence.
‘Are there any problems at home Jade?’ asked Mrs Garden.
Jade looked up from the floor.
‘No Mrs Garden.’ she whispered.
Mrs Garden twisted both palms.
‘Jade, what time do you go to bed?’ she asked.
‘9PM. Everyday and every night.’ Jade replied.
Mrs Garden continued to stare at the quiet girl.
‘Remind me. You are 8 Jade?’ Mrs Garden asked.
‘9. I have just had my 9th birthday.’ Jade said.
Mrs Garden turned away from Jade to look at the clock.
‘Well, you had better go home Jade. You do realise that I will have to ring your parents about this.’ said Mrs Garden.
Jade slowly nodded.
‘Good. See you tomorrow Jade.’ she added.
Jade turned and walked down the corridor towards the front entrance.
Jade’s Mum stood on one of the long steps looking rather pale.
‘Mum!’ Jade yelled.
Jade’s Mum looked up. Jade ran towards her.
‘Oh my goodness Jade. I was having a panic attack!’ Jade’s Mum said as she hugged her.
‘I am really sorry Mum.’ replied Jade.
Jade’s Mum took Jade by the hand.
‘Come on Jade! Let’s go home.’ replied Jade’s Mum.
The journey home was silent. Jade watched out of the car window as they drove home.
The sun shone down but Jade wasn’t smiling. She felt rather emotional.
When Jade got home, she was surprised to see that there was a parcel addressed to her.
‘A little birthday present for you.’ said Jade’s Mum.
‘Late birthday present you mean. 2 weeks late!’ replied Jade.
There was stillness in the hallway.
‘Please may I open it Mum?’ Jade asked.
‘A little bit later Jade.’ Her Mum replied.
Jade was rather sad.
‘But for now, let’s get dinner on the go!’ added Jade’s Mum.
Jade’s Mum had tears in her eyes as she walked out to the kitchen.
It was just Jade and her Mum living in a house with a capacity for 6 not 2.
The thing is, Jade used to have a big family but now in the space of a few weeks. A lot had changed.
Jade and her Mum sat down to eat dinner. Jade was rather nervous. She didn’t want to talk about what had happened earlier.
Jade’s Mum by now had noticed that Jade wasn’t acting her usual self. Normally, Jade was such a comedian but today. Jade looked so much different.
‘Finished!’ said Jade as she sat her knife and fork down.
Jade’s Mum looked at Jade.
‘Jade, do you have any homework?’ she asked.
Jade nodded.
‘I am going to do it up in my room.’ she replied.
‘OK.’ said Jade’s Mum.
Jade who was shaking so much ran upstairs to her room. Jade liked her room. Her favourite thing about it was the blue hammock in the corner.
As Jade was doing her homework. The phone rang.
Jade stopped writing and waited for her Mum to answer the phone. She could hear footsteps and her Mum picking up the phone. By now, Jade was so frightened.
The time seemed to drag on slowly. Jade watched out of the window. By now, her tummy was full of butterflies.
Jade’s Mum slowly walked up the stairs to Jade’s room. Very calmly, she knocked on the door.
‘Jade?’ her Mum called.
Jade climbed onto the windowsill and pulled the curtain across just as her Mum entered.
‘Jade.....’ said her Mum. ‘Please come out from there.’ she added.
Jade peeped out from behind the curtain to see that her Mum was sitting on her bed.
Jade climbed down and sat next to her Mum.
‘Jade, that was Mrs Garden on the phone saying you got sent out of the class for yawning.’ Jade’s Mum said.
Jade now looked as pale as a ghost.
‘It was an accident Mum.’ she replied.
Jade’s Mum stared at her daughter.
‘Your teacher kept moaning on and on about your diet and what time you go to bed...’ Jade’s Mum trailed off.
Jade now looked rather upset.
‘Has someone at school been making fun of you?’ asked Jade’s Mum.
‘NO!’ shouted Jade. ‘I’m fed up of everyone bothering me!’
Jade’s Mum looked rather shocked.
‘You are the only person I have left Jade. I am entitled to bother you sometimes.’ her Mum replied.
Jade realised that she had upset her Mum. Her Mum was crying on her shoulder. Jade burst into tears.
Both of them hugged for a while. Letting all of the overdue tears flow out.
It was night time by the time that both of them stopped crying.
‘I am so upset Mum.’ Jade admitted.
Jade’s Mum nodded.
‘I can’t bring your Father and your Sister back Jade but I can make you feel better.’ she replied.
Jade gave a small smile.
‘How?’ asked Jade.
‘Why don’t you open that parcel now?’ said Jade’s Mum.
Very slowly, Jade opened the parcel and gasped.
Inside were a photo album and a £20 note.
‘In this photo album Jade, there are lots of memories. some from a long time ago. The £20 note was from your Father before he...’ Jade’s Mum trailed off.
Jade slowly flicked through the album. Her Mum was right. There were a lot of memories in there.
‘Now, what ever you do. Please don’t worry about Mrs Garden.’ Jade’s Mum said.
Jade looked rather nervous again.
‘What will you tell her Mum?’ Jade asked.
‘I will tell her that you are getting over a family bereavement.’ replied Jade’s Mum.
Jade smiled. She turned to hug her Mum.
‘I love you Mum.’ said Jade.
‘I love you too.’ replied her Mum.
There was a silence in the room for a short while.
‘Now, I fancy some ice-cream!’ said Jade’s Mum.
‘Yeah!’ yelled Jade
‘Well, what are we waiting for?’ said her Mum.
Jade laughed.
‘Come on! Race you to the freezer!’ said her Mum.
‘You are on!’ yelled Jade.
Both of them charged down the stairs towards the kitchen.
Jade reached the freezer first.
‘Beat you!’ she yelled.
Jade’s Mum joined her as they open the delicious vanilla ice-cream and together, they ate out of the tub.
Jade smiled. She felt so much better.
