Chapter Twelve
Y/n's pov
Your eyes flicked up to see the masked figure stepping towards you. You quickly recognized them to be the one called Masky as Toby quickly moved his grip from your arm to your waist, pulling you behind him. "Master to-told you that t-t-they're mine." Toby snapped quickly tightening his already bone breaking grip.
Your cheeks burned in embarrassment as you looked at the masked figure watching his next moves cautiously. He pulled his mask up to above his lips, exposing a malicious smile, "Master said to make them feel welcome." He said smiling at Toby as he approached you.
You averted you gaze and unconsciously moved closer to Toby as you attempted to create as much distance between you and Masky's looming figure as possible. He seemed amused by this and mockingly stuck his hand out, "Hello~ I haven't formally introduce myself, I'm Masky." He said stepping uncomfortably closer to you.
You shifted my weight awkwardly and hesitantly took his gloved hand. "Y/n," you said in a voice barely above a whisper as you slightly shook his hand.
Masky saw an opportunity and promptly took it, grabbing your hand and pulling you towards him, effectively ripping you away from Toby's hold. "Say, why hang out with Rogers when it could be me?" He smirked in an obvious attempt to anger Toby.
He watched your expression in amusement keeping his grip tight. "Let me go!" You spat as you tried to pull your hand out of his.
You jumped as a gloved hand gripped hard on Masky's shoulder. Masky loosened his grip on you hand and turned around, looking at whoever was behind him. Once he was turned Toby delivered a hard punch to his face knocking the male back a few feet.
You stumbled backwards away from the two and into one of the spectators. You looked up in surprise as they gripped your shoulders stabling you. "O-oh, hey.. E.J?" You questioned fixing your posture so you wasn't completely leaning on him.
He chuckled as you turned around watching the fight escalate, "That's right, though you can call me Jack if you want." he said letting go of your shoulders.
The place where his hands once were felt cold due to his unnaturally freezing fingers that held a strange gray hue. What's wrong with these people? You questioned yourself before focusing back on the fight unfolding in front of you.
Everyone around you cheered and egged on each opponent as they were both clawing at one another. Jack choose not to participate and walked towards the pair. He gripped Masky's collar roughly and pushed him to the side, creating some distance between him and Toby. "That's enough, I don't need to spend all morning patching you two up after a fight, again." He said in a annoyed tone pulling out what looked like a scalpel and directing it at the two.
They both took in ragged breaths glaring at each other before Masky lifted up his mask up slightly and spit out blood on the floor. "Go fuck yourself." He spat at Toby before turning and pushing his way through the crowd of spectators towards Hoodie.
"Let's get the competitors and get this done with." He said glancing over his shoulders to the others watching him intently.
Half followed behind him and left the rest to sit in an uncomfortable silence. Toby trotted over to you while his eyes scanned your body, "Did he h-hurt you?" He asked concerned as he, once again, pulled you into his arms.
"No I'm fine," you said, "My wrist hurts a little but it's nothing." You said trying to get him to drop the subject.
He didn't question you further but muttered curses under his breath until a group of about twenty or so were piled into the large room. They were lead by a clearly annoyed Masky who was followed closely by Hoodie. "Line up," One of the many people surrounding them spat making the group behind them scrambled and practically tripped over themselves to be in their spot as fast as possible.
You frowned as you looked at their sunken faces, they had heavy eye bags and were clearly roughed up in one way or another. There was also noticeably less people, it looked to be about five or six were missing. A shiver went down my spine, what happened to these guys? And why aren't I with them? You made a mental note to ask Toby about it later as you listened to a tall boy with a mop of blonde hair do roll call.
Once he was finished he waved Toby over, Toby gripped your hand and dragged you over with him. The boy handed him a new sheet of paper and stepped back, "Morning Sir, that's the schedule for today," he said nonchalantly before he turned to you, "Y/n, right?" The boy asked a bit more enthusiastically.
Toby's head immediately shot up to glare at the boy. The boy looked over and seemed to shift his weight further away from him. "Yeah, and you are?" You asked being polite.
"Patrick," he smiled exposing a row of perfect white teeth.
You smiled back and could feel Toby's hand move to your waist obviously pulling you closer towards him. Your smile dropped as you looked up at Toby's angry expression as he turned his head away from you. "I should go," Patrick said picking up on Toby's expression as well, he quickly trotted away into the bigger group along with Masky.
Toby's muscles relaxed once he felt he was a safe distance away and he began reading out the schedule for the day. Your eyes grew wide as he read down the list, it consisted of playing a game of hide and seek, the contestants being the hiders and the 'proxy' being the seekers. Only in this messed up version the first three to be discovered were, as they put it "eliminated from the competition."
The faces of the contestants looked pale but most attempted a brave face though there was evident traces of fear on their faces.
After everyone was filed out and into what looked to be an old football field, hiders were placed on one side and seekers on the other. "Please, I don't want to do this. Just let me stay inside or something." You muttered pleadingly to Toby.
"No," he hissed, "There's no c-chance of th-that after what Masky pu-pulled this m-morning." He stated firmly, not looking at you.
