This was the time when the entire universe had been dissolved in water.

Vishnu was resting on Ananta Naga, his thousand-headed snake, and Vishnu was fast asleep amidst the waters of Vaikunta.

It was at this time that two very powerful Danavas called Madhu and Kaitabha emerged from the ears of Vishnu.

The two Danavas played around in the ocean waters for a long time.

However, sometime later, the two Danavas reflected on more serious things. They wanted to know where they were and how they had come to be here and who had created all this that surrounded them.

Kaitabha turned to Madhu. "It seems that this water and everything around us has to be created by the Devi."

Continuing with what they believed, they came upon the realization that the Devi, the Mother Goddess, was the source of Creation around them.

Then Kaitabha and Madhu were able to focus on the Vagvija. Vagvija is a secret mantra of Vak—the speech—that is the personification of Devi Saraswathi.

Madhu and Kaitabha practiced more and more, and soon they were adept at meditating on Saraswathi.

The two of them spent one thousand years practicing this great meditation.

Aadya Sakti is a primordial Goddess, the Mother Goddess of Creation. When she saw the meditation of the two Danavas, Aadya Sakthi was immensely pleased. She decided to grant the two Danavas anything that they desired.

Though Aadya Sakti remained invisible to the two Danavas, she addressed them in a celestial voice. "I am very pleased with both of you. So ask for any boon, and I will grant it."
