3. Children?
* Liam Lockwood's POV *
I park on the sidewalk in front of The Blue café. My heart is racing. I haven't slept at all last night. The blue eyes were dancing in front of me, not once escaping.
I walk up to the counter. There was a oldish man behind the till. "Hi, I'm looking for Lora."
"She's not here." Wait what?
"Um, sorry but she has to be here."
"Sorry sir, she isn't."
"When will she be back?" I ask, disappointed.
"She won't be back soon. She got fired."
"What?! Why?"
"She didn't wear her uniform yesterday. She wore a jacket and then she got fired for being dressed like a slut."
"You're kidding me right? A kid puked on her and she got fired because of that?"
"It wasn't my choice, so there is no need raising your voice at me, mister!" he said angerly.
I sigh, scratching the back of my head. "Do you know where she could be now?"
"I'm afraid not."
"Is there anybody who might know?"
"Shell should know, but she's on leave. She'll be back in two days."
I nod. "Thank you." I said and leave the café.
**********
"Hi, mom." I kiss my mother's cheek where she was busy with dinner.
"Hello, honey. How are you?"
"I've been better." I said, taking place on the counter chair.
She looks up at me. "Ah, what's wrong my baby boy?"
"Mom, please. Don't call me that."
"I'll call you whatever I want to call you. Now, tell me what's bothering you?"
"It's nothing, I'm just being stupid."
"Liam! Spit it out! Now!"
"Fine. I met this girl yesterday. I gave her my jacket because a kid spilled his food all over her dress. I told her that I would come to pick it up today. When I got there they told me she got fired, because she wore my jacket." My mother raises her eyebrow at me. "What?"
"I can't figure out if you upset because of the girl or the jacket."
"Mom!"
"What?! Are you mad because of your jacket?"
"No! I freaken like this girl!"
"But you met her like yesterday."
"I know, like I said that this is stupid. But mom, you should've seen her! Bright blue eyes, a barbie smile and when she spoke a dagger went right through my chest. When I saw her my heart went crazy. I didn't sleep last night, because of her. I can't stop thinking about her since I saw her yesterday. And now. Now,I don't know if I'll ever see her again."
"Oh, honey. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I can just imagine how hard it should be. But if it is to happen, then your paths will cross again pretty soon."
"Yeah, you're probably right. I'll just have to sit and wait."
"Ah, my boy. Everything will work out just fine. You'll see. I promise."
"Thanks."
"Oh! Before I forget. We're going to your aunt's this weekend, so don't make any plans for then." I nod and go to my room.
* Lora Croffard's POV *
I put the last of my luggage into the trunk of the car Mary gave me to borrow. She said that I'm going to need to get places fast, so she gave me this fancy thing with wheels. Luckily I already have my drivers licence.
That's it. I'm moving into the maid's room at the mansion. A nanny? Yeah, that's kind of not what I had in mind... At all!
I driv off to my new destination, parking where I was told.
I open the door to my room and stood frozen. How is it possible that a big and beautiful house like this, could have such a small and ugly room like this?
There's only a single bed, with grey covers, a small mirror and tiny wardrobe standing in the corner. A cramped bathroom with only a toilet, sink and bath, also a very small fridge and kettle on a shelf.
Oh well, at least I'm getting a good amount of pay. That means I'll be out in no time.
There's a knock on my door and I walk over to open it. In front of me stood a girl about my age.
"Hi! I'm Nash, I'm the housekeeper of this rich pitch. I was called to come and get you."
"Sure, I'm Lora."
"Welcome, Lora. I'm glad I now have some company around here. Walk with me." She turns around and starts walking up to the mansion and I follow. "You're going to have your hands full with these children."
"Children?" Wait what?! There's more than one kid?
"Yeah, you know that's what you're here for."
"I know, but I thought there only was one child."
Nash starts laughing. "No, there's three."
I couldn't say a word. How did I not know this? I'm so screwed, what am I going to do?!
"Oh, boy. You really didn't know that, did you?"
"Nope," I say, nervously.
"I would've said you'll be fine, but... Yeah. Well she's waiting in here. Goodluck. See you later, alligator." She turns around and walks away, waving at me.
I enter the living room, which I recognise from this morning. Mary sits on one of the couches not sensing me enter.
"Hi." She jumps up, her eyes wide.
"Don't ever sneak up to me like that ever again!"
"Sorry, it won't happen again."
"Good sit down. Alexander!" she yells back at the door. A man with a bald head comes running in.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Bring the kids down, would you."
He nods, turning around. "Yes, ma'am."
A few seconds later a teenage boy walks in with a little girl attached to his hand. Alexander comes back in with the baby from the café in his arms.
Mary stands up and I follow her lead. I rub my hand agains my pants to wipe off the water forming on it.
"Okay, guys," Mary starts of. "This is your new nanny, Lora. You'll treat her with respect. Not like the previous ones. Understood?" They nod while slightly glaring at me. I try to swallow the knot in my throat. "Lora, this is Daniel, Chloe and little Angy. Daniel's 16, Chloe 5 and Angy is 6 months old."
"Hi, guys. Nice to meet you," I try but none of them gave me any response.
"Okay, well darling. Here's a file with all the information you need. It includes the house rules and everyone's schedules. Also your do's and don't's. I'll leave you guys to bond. Kids, show her around. I have to leave now for a meeting, I'll be back at ten. Be good." She gives everyone a peck on the forehead before leaving. Alexander hands me Angy before also leaving the living room.
I am left alone with two children staring at me. "You know," Daniel starts. "Your kind doesn't last long here."
"You know, threatening me won't make me run off. Okay, look. You guys don't like having a nanny or whatever, but I not here to hold you hostage. I'll admit, I don't have a clue about this kind of thing so don't make this hard for any of us. I won't overrule you guys, but all I'm asking is respect and that you obey at least a few of your mother's rules. I want to be your friend not your security guard or something. Okay?" they look shocked, not responding.
"What? Say something?!" I say starting to get frantic.
"No, it's nothing. It's just that we never had a nanny who was so... Well, nice."
"And?"
"We never like our nannies." Chloe speaks for the first time.
"Let's make a deal." I walk closer bending down in front of them, still with Angy asleep in my arms. "If there's anything I do that bothers you, you tell me and visa versa, Deal?" They nod, with smiles slightly forming on their face.
"I'm starting to like you already." Daniel says.
