20. Happy birthday, Cinderella.

* Lora Croffard's POV *

I walked through the airport's door that lead to the people waiting for their love ones. In the crowd I spotted my grandmother swinging her hands in the air.

Wow, it's been fourteen years. She's my biological granny. We always had contact. Just some times less than other.

"Oh my! Lora my baby. Look how you've grown."

"Hi, Grams."

She pulled me into her arms. "You've become a woman."

"And you look as charming as ever."

"Oh, stop being so modest.  Come, let's get you home."

I almost asked her if we are going back on the plane, but then I realized she actually meant her house... Here in London... Because that's my home now.

"What's up with that look? I thought you would be happy when you got there."

"Jetlag,  Grams. I didn't get much sleep on the plane."

"When we get home you can have a sleep and then you can unpack later. You should get rest before your classes start in two days time."

*********

When I woke up I stayed a while longer, laying down. The ceiling didn't look familiar. Neither did the walls. The bed's uncomfortable and the wind coming through the window was cold.

I called Mary when we got home yesterday. She cried again. It broke me being away. Maybe it will get better with time.

I just hope this was the right decision.

There was a knock on the door and my grandmother's head popped around the doorframe. "Oh, you're awake."

"Yeah, I couldn't sleep anymore."  I sat up straight and she came to sit next to me on the bed.

"So, how are you keeping up after everything?"

"Quite good actually. Mary, my boss when I was a nanny,  she's become like a mother to me. I loved the children, they were the best things that could have happen to me. And I've made loads of friend, thanks to Liam..."

"Liam? Who's Liam? Boyfriend maybe?"

"No, he's family of Mary's. His friends became my friends.  Also his sister and her husband. They're still on honeymoon."

"And Liam?"

"He- he's the best person on earth. His sweet and funny. He's a very good dancer and also good with kids. He's kind and loving. Also something for the eyes, I might add. And... I think I love him."

"Aww, that's sweet."

"It's not that easy."

"Why not?"

"Because he's rich and I'm a nanny.... Well, was."

"That's doesn't matter."

"It does, because I'm here now and he's there. As much as I want it to work it won't."

"Oh, my darling. I'm so sorry."

"I know I've worked hard to get here, but is it weird for me actually doubt my decision?  I was actually just beginning to be happy."

"Don't you want to be here?"

"I do! I mean I've worked basically my whole life for this. But they've become my family back there."

"I'm so sorry."

"No, it's not your fault. I'm going to be fine. I'll get use to it. I'll meet new people and do and learn new things. And I have you don't I?"

"Of course you do, I'll always be there for you.  Now, come on. I'll help you unpack your things."

**********

My phone started to ring in my back pocket.

"Hello?"

"Happy birthday, Cinderella."

"Liam? You remembered?"

"Of course I remembered. Just because you're thousands of miles away, doesn't mean I forgot you."

"I know." It's already been four months since I came here.

"What are you doing for your special day?"

"Nothing special. I'm going out with some friend for some coffee and cake. Then I'll be at home, probably studying."

"That's so exciting!" he said, sarcastically.

"I know right! What are you doing?"

"Nothing much, since it's already like ten."

"Oh, yeah. Time difference. You know, it's been a while and I still forget. Sometimes it's hard to think about it." It's true, I'm still not over it. It's still haunting me everyday, but I try keep my head up.

"How's your course going?"

"Good, it's fun."

"Oh, well, I guess that's good."

"Why wouldn't it be?"

"Well, if it wasn't you might have come back."

"Liam, please don't start."

"Sorry, I just- you know, nevermind." We haven't lost contact. We've talked and Skyped alot. But sometimes it wasn't enough. "I've got you a present."

"Oh jee, thanks."

"I'm serious. Go to your front door."

"You're messing with me right. It isn't funny, seriously."

"Nope, just go. Don't worry it's something small." I sighed and stood up.

I walked to the front door and opened it. My heart sank. "You asshole!"  I shouted, jumping on top of him. His hands caught me and I hugged him like I haven't done in a long time.

"Something small my ass," I whispered into his ear.

"You've just admitted that I have great muscularity."

"I see your ego hasn't popped yet."

"Yes, because you weren't around to do it."

"That makes sense."

"Lora, what- Oh, I haven't noticed the bell ringing." Liam put me down quickly.

"Grams, um... This is Liam. He flew over for my birthday."

"Oh, Liam. Of course, Lora told me so much about you. Come in, I was on my way to make some coffee, would you like some?"

"That would be lovely, thank you." I took his hand and pulled him to the lounge.

"You really did not have to fly all the way over here."

"I just had to. And I didn't have class, so here I am."

"This is the best "something small" present I ever got. Thank you."

"I actually have something small for you." He took out a package from one of the bags he had with him. "This one's from Amber and Mark,  they received two of them for their wedding." He handed me a small box that was covered by blue paper.

I tore the paper off and then opened the box. In the box were two things. A small photo frame- now containing a photo from the wedding. It's one of me and Liam in our wedding clothes. I looked over at Liam and saw that he was also staring at the picture.

"That's pretty,"  he said. "What's in the smaller box." I opened it and quickly threw it at Liam.

"Ew! Why would she give me this?!"

Liam burst out in laughter when he realized what I threw at him. "Maybe for safety."

"Sis!" Condoms.....

"She's smart."

"Why would she give me something I wouldn't use."

"You will, someday. Anyways, this one comes from Nash." He gave me a pack which was soft.

"A bear!" It's a small teddy bear. On his paw there stood "Nash" in a bright red. "That's so cute."

"This is from the kids."

In that package there was a jar of peanutbutter, oreos, a book and jellybeans.

"Mary sent this."

A photo album. Inside was all the photos I took of me and the kids. The house, friends and almost everything. At the end of the album there's a letter.

Dear Lora

We miss you so much. The kids hate their new nanny and Nash misses her best friend.

I miss you too, you were always there when I needed someone. Not only to take care of the kids, but also just to talk to.

You'll always be my-

I couldn't  read further because Grams came in with a tray.  Liam stood up and took it from her. I'll just continue later.

We drank our coffee. It's nice catching up with Liam. I felt closer to home.

I knew I've missed him, but now I realised just how much I actually did.
