Something in Common
When it was nighttime, the girls were just sitting doing nothing. But Emily had an idea.
Regan: Hey. Where are you going?
Emily: I'm just gonna go check on Rex.
Regan: Aw, someone feeling lonely?
Emily: (Blushing) No, it's not like that! I just want to keep him company!
Regan: (Sarcastic) Sure you do.
Emily: I'm serious!
Regan: Ok, if you say so.
Emily was just about to head outside and saw Rex keeping an eye on the cloud sea.
Emily: Hey, Rex, what are you looking at?
Rex: Em, come look at this.
Rex: That's the black ship from the harbor. Is it... following us...?
Emily: I think so.
Nia: Ugh, it's way too cold up here.
Rex: You-
Nia: I'll have you know I've got a name. It's Nia. They've started boozin' below decks. You should join 'em.
Emily: I'll pass. I'm still too young to drink.
Rex: Why aren't you there?
Nia: It's not that I hate it, I just really don't need a headache right now.
Regan: Huh. Good thing you're not a salvager, then.
Nia: Why's that?
Rex: Swim like a fish, and drink like one too. That's the Salvager's Code.
Emily: (Giggles)
Nia: Ugh, sounds terrible. I don't think I'll be changing careers...
Rex: Hm. Probably for the best.
Rex: Anyway, I bet you drivers earn a hell of a lot more than salvagers do!
Nia: So, kids...
Emily: My name's Emily. But my friends call me Em.
Rex: My name's Rex.
Nia: Hmph. Ok, Rex. Why did you start salvaging in the first place?
Rex: That there.
Nia: The... World Tree? I don't get it.
Emily: It's really beautiful when you see it up close.
Rex: You know, you find all sorts of digging through salvage. Some of it trash, some of it treasure... but all of it from people long gone. Have you noticed how there's fewer Titans each day? We saw one go under just the other day. It was a pretty big one. There must have been loads of animals still living on it... Living space is running out day by day. Sooner or later, we'll be the ones sinking down into the Cloud Sea. But up there... Elysium is waiting for us.
Emily: Rex...
Nia: Pff... Bwahahahahaha!
Nia: Seriously, kid? "Elysium"? Don't tell me you two believe that guff!
Nia: So that's, uh...why you're a salvager? It's just a lie for children, and that there is just an overgrown shrub!
Rex: If there's a way to get up there, maybe it's hidden below the clouds. Is it really that crazy?
Nia: Seriously, though...
Rex: There'd be no need to fight over dwindling land and resources... No need to worry about our homes sinking away... Everyone can have peace and security. I mean, a dream like that... Isn't that worth believing in?
Nia: Nobody can tell you what to believe, but... Hmm... "Everyone," huh...?
Emily: What?
Nia: I always thought people were pretty selfish by nature. But you...
Rex: Huh?
Nia: D'you have parents?
Rex: Nope.
Emily: Not exactly. But I have my sister, Regan.
Rex: When I asked Gramps, he told me they died when I was just a kid.
Nia: "Gramps"... Oh, the same one who taught you to use Arts?
Emily: Yeah, his name's Azurda. He basically raised Rex himself. He's not like us, though.
Nia: Not like...?
Emily: He's a Titan.
Nia: I'm not sure I catch your drift, but this Gramps of yours sounds all right.
Nia: And you're all right too, kid. Not that different from me.
(Inside the ship)
Regan: Huh?
Emily: What's the matter?
Regan: Looks like we're heading for a nasty storm.
Captain: We are in position. All personnel, report to stations. Salvage team, suit up and proceed to hatch.
Emily: Here's your helmet.
Rex: Thanks, Em.
Regan: Watch your back out there, buddy.
